Abstract:
Approachments, basically, are related to the subject of media literacy. The different practices sourced from these approachments have been remarked since the inception of media literacy subject discussions until today. The diversifying of media tools is dependent on its technological development. Thus, it is reaching broader areas which are necessary for evaluating the media literacy in a different and wider view. When the attempts of the government structures about the subject in Turkey and the courses were examined, wordings which have become different, over the years, in source texts have been given so much attention. Media literacy class source texts have been prepared in a critical language in Turkey. However, it is been passed into a protective and interferant wording in terms of time more than criticism. In this study, firstly, the differences between protective and interferant approachments will be explained with a critical approach directed towards media literacy. Right after that, the content of two (2) different sourced texts which has been prepared for study in the media literacy classes in Turkey will be examined based on the period they were published.

Abstract:
Historically, literary sources have always provided a rich resource for film narratives, meaning that the history of cinema is closely intertwined with the history of film adaptation. Children's literature in particular has been a favoured source of represented narratives. Some of the earliest film adaptations were of children's texts, many of which have been readapted multiple times. Adaptation studies has been a growth area of scholarly research and debate for at least five decades. However, despite the close imbrication of the film industry and children's literature since the early twentieth century, few adaptation scholars have turned their attention to the rich resource that children's and youth culture provides. This paper surveys dominant shifts in approaches to adaptation, in particular the shift from ‘fidelity criticism’ to a dialogic intertextual approach; the recent move back to a modified form of ‘fidelity criticism’; and the cultural work that has thus far been achieved in the field of adaptation studies and children's and youth culture. In doing so it examines the critical challenges faced by scholars in the field and the potent possibilities future scholarship might pursue.

Abstract:
Qira’at mutawatirah is the word of Allah. It is the source and the most important element in the studying al-Qur’an. It is a primary reference source, in its capacity as al-Qur’an revealed by Allah SWT. But the problem that arises is when some scientists and orientalists attempt to criticize Qira’at mutawatirah and embroider it with misconceptions. This condition becomes worse, because it was found from critical that refused accuracy of Qira’at mutawatirah by concluding Qira’at mutawatirah is wrong. Based on the statement above, this paper will discuss and analyze about the views that criticize Qira’at mutawatirah to explain the reasoning-defense argument. This study is a qualitative research and focused on documents analysis. The findings of this study concluded that the arguments defense Qira’at mutawatirah is a strong argument, while criticism argued is not correct, because their consideration simply put human logic of the word of Allah SWT

Abstract:
“Source criticism” (källkritik) has become an essential part of the Swedish government’s activities against false information, deception campaigns, and propaganda, which are viewed as fundamentally destabilising forces that can potentially undermine the democratic system, the public debate, and political decision-making. The purpose of this article is to explore source criticism as a technology of government focusing on the Swedish Psychological Defence. I analyse the way in which source criticism is brought to bear on Swedish national security policy in the light of Foucauldian theories about modern governmentality and technologies of the self. Source criticism is seen as an example of a contemporary form of government that entails a redistribution of responsibility from the state to the individual, who is provided with certain “technologies of self” to master an unpredictable political environment. With this case study as empirical example, the aim of the article is to contribute to the research on the influence of humanistic knowledge in security and defence policy domains. This prompts further discussion about what happens with the democratic and critical potential of humanistic knowledge as it is enrolled in government operations.

Abstract:
This article argues that the contemporary hype in digitization and dissemination of our cultural heritage – especially of audiovisual sources – is comparable to the boom of critical source editions in the late 19th century. But while the dramatic rise of accessibility to and availability of sources in the 19th century went hand in hand with the development of new scholarly skills of source interpretation and was paralleled by the institutionalization of history as an academic profession, a similar trend of an emerging digital historicism today seems absent. This essay aims at reflecting on the challenges and chances that the discipline of history – and the field of television history in particular – is actually facing. It offers some thoughts and ideas on how the digitization of sources and their online availability affects the established practices of source criticism.

Abstract:
The Islamic science of Biblical Criticism is one of the earliest to emerge from the study of the Qur'an. It was developed by Muslim scholars specialising in the history of religions and reached its peak with the contributions of Ibn Ḥazm al-Andalūsī in the fifth/twelfth century. This ‘traditional’ Islamic science has more recently been complemented by the incorporation of Western Biblical Criticism Theory in the works of Raḥmat Allah al-Hindī, Ismāʿīl al-Fārūqī, Muḥammad Khalīfa Ḥasan, and others. This study will seek to determine the role of the Qur'an in the establishment of the Islamic science of Biblical Criticism and its centrality as a source for this discipline, through the elaboration of certain principles, such as the moderating position of the Qur'an between the Tanakh and Christian Bible, and the moderating position of Islam between Judaism and Christianity. Among these principles are the Qur'an's critical awareness and theories of taḥrīf and tabdīl, for example. The objectivity of the Qur'an is shown in the way it accepts previous revealed texts, and acknowledges them as a matter of belief, while seeking at the same time to conclusively clarify the revelation. In conclusion, this paper urges the usefulness of the Qur'an as a source of Biblical Criticism and Jewish and Christian interpretation and exegesis of the Tanakh and the Christian Bible.

Abstract:
This article addresses the sensitive, religious-political issue of the promised land. It discusses this issue from the perspective of the criticism of the promised land in the works of Walter Brueggemann in comparison to his artistic source of influence, John Steinbeck. After the systematic analysis of Brueggemann’s criticism of land ideology throughout his work, I elaborate on Steinbeck’s critical attitude to this topic which I offer as Steinbeck’s own alternative criticism. On top of the affirmation that “Steinbeck may have put the issue of the land most eloquently,” as suggested by Brueggemann himself, I propose that Steinbeck (unlike Brueggemann) does not fall into the trap of producing an inverted ideology and offers a balanced and timeless criticism of the promised land issue.

Abstract:
James Baldwin criticism from 2001 through 2010 is marked by an increased appreciation for Baldwin’s entire oeuvre including his writing after the mid 1960s. The question of his artistic decline remains debated, but more scholars find a greater consistency and power in Baldwin’s later work than previous scholars had found. A group of dedicated Baldwin scholars emerged during this period and have continued to host regular international conferences. The application of new and diverse critical lenses—including cultural studies, political theory, religious studies, and black queer theory—contributed to more complex readings of Baldwin’s texts. Historical and legal approaches re-assessed Baldwin’s relationship to the Civil Rights and Black Power movements and new material emerged on Baldwin’s decade in Turkey. Some historical perspective gave many critics a more nuanced approach to the old “art” vs. “politics” debate as it surfaced in Baldwin’s initial reception, many now finding Baldwin’s “angry” work to be more “relevant” than “out of touch” as it was thought of during his lifetime. In the first decade of the new millennium, three books of new primary source material, a new biography, four books of literary criticism, three edited collections of critical essays, two special issues of journals and numerous book chapters and articles were published, marking a significant increase not only in the quantity, but the quality of Baldwin criticism.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses source criticism from a critical perspective which encompasses its challenges, demands and possibilities for teaching practice. The questions guiding the core of this research are the following:1) What differentiates people’s activities in the process of evaluating sources? 2) What characterizes an effective practice in critical evaluation of sources? 3) Which criteria, factors and strategies might be important to consider in order to have a successful source critical methodology that promotes the improvement of critical thinking when analysing information and news? The studied materials include data from one survey and 54 semi-structured interviews. The interviews, analysed by using a methodology based on Grounded Theory, led to the development of a concept, critical source criticism (CSC), which define a broad perspective for the analysis of sources, and a related theoretical model (the CSC-model) aimed to be used for didactical purposes. The outcomes from this research suggest that different forms and levels of knowledge in history and social studies (in theory and practice), have a critical impact on the way we interact with information. The results also suggest that the combinations of theories and methodologies, alongside an emphasis on pluralism and multiperspectivity, can turn source criticism into an effective practice to achieve several educational goals. Subsequently, these results, are considered in the development of the proposed model in this thesis. The CSC-model developed in this study could be suitable for the analysis of information such as news, in planning of source-critical based teaching and in source critical discussions. I argue that this methodological structure, can be applied to facilitate the development of critical thinking, as well as other skills and abilities essential for democratic participation. Abstract:
This essay seeks to illustrate how critical literacy and source criticism can be incorporated in argumentative thinking and reasoning in an assignment based on authentic materials constructed for students studying English 6 in Swedish upper-secondary school. The assignment seeks to, grounded in critical literacy theory, increase the students’ source criticism and improve their argumentative thinking and reasoning. These goals are directly connected to the aims presented in the syllabus for the English subject in Swedish upper-secondary school. The essay will state why authentic texts are suitable when teaching critical literacy skills. The essay will also present different theories to critical literacy and conclude that "the four resources model" (Luke & Freebody, 1990) can be considered most suitable for students assigned to produce argumentative texts. The authentic materials chosen for this assignment consist of three themes identified in the critical documentaries Bowling for Columbine (2002), directed by Michael Moore, and Michael Moore hates America (2004), directed by Mike Wilson. The three themes that are selected for the assignment, and presented in this essay are: The NRA, The 2 nd amendment and Is Michael Moore anti-American? The students will get a theme assigned to them and are supposed to, through instructions based on critical literacy theory, develop an argumentative text about their specific theme. Subsequently, the students are supposed to present their argumentative text in front of the class. Additionally, the goals stated in the curriculum for the English subject and the aims from the syllabus for English 6 in Swedish upper-secondary school will be presented and explained in relation to the assignment constructed for this essay and how the assignment will make them to achieve those goals.

Abstract:
With our modern deluge of information through social media, news and blogs, the importance of giving our children a better understanding of source criticism and critical thinking has become increasingly clear. In the field of critical thinking, the use of argument mapping software, a visual way of structuring arguments, has been shown to increase the understanding of arguments, and college students using the method score as much as three times higher on critical thinking tests.  This thesis presents a simplified digital argument mapping tool, developed in order to explore the feasibility of argument mapping for students in secondary school (aged 13-15). The tool is then tested on two secondary school classes. The thesis shows that the students are proficient at basic argument mapping with the tool, but also that the more complex facets of the method require more instruction in order to be used by the students. Recommendations are presented for further development of the argument mapping tool, as well as further studies of critical thinking using argument mapping in secondary school. The thesis has shown the argument mapping has potential for use in secondary school, and should be further studied.

Abstract:
The source-critical approach constitutes an important part in civics (Skolverket, 2019). Alongside with the rapid digital development, the amount of information has increased in scope, which has had the consequence that disinformation and conspiracies have become increasingly common (Önnerfors, 2021). Teaching in information retrieval and source criticism is an important countermeasure, as it develops the source-critical approach. The teaching design in information retrieval and source criticism is therefore interesting and important to illuminate and investigate. The aim of the interview study is to highlight thoughts from teachers in civics in grade 7–9 about information retrieval and source criticism in civics.  In addition, factors for successful teaching around the source-critical area are addressed, as well as future challenges and development points. The theoretical basis of the study is phenomenological, which gives an insight into the teachers' thoughts and perceptions. Based on a strategic selection, five civic teachers in grade 7–9 form the basis of this interview study which can be seen as a contribution to the ongoing research in information retrieval and source criticism.  The interview study shows that the interviewed civic teachers possess good knowledge in information retrieval and the source-critical area. An important factor is to treat information retrieval and source criticism both as a separate and a uniform area. Furthermore, it is important to start from student-friendly examples, as it promotes learning. Other factors that influence is the management of resources such as continuing education and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations, which this study points out a need to develop. It is important that students receive a comprehensive education in the area. The ability to meet different types of information is important to act as an active citizen. In the long run, a source-critical approach is an important prerequisite for continuing to maintain confidence in democracy and science.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relation between the school’s work on source criticism and how students encounter with works with truth claims looks. This was studied through a semi-structured research interview with both teachers and students. The teachers are active high school teachers in Swedish and the students study their third year at the high school. The students were interviewed in focus groups while the teachers were interviewed one by one. The interviews were conducted remotely, and each focus group and teacher were interviewed once. This study is a qualitative study with didactic theory as a theoretical framework. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results of the survey is that the relationship between the school's teaching about source criticism and how students' encounters with works with truth claims looks is relatively small. The teaching contains works with truth claims but is not part of the work with source criticism.

Abstract:
Source criticism and information search is a major part of digital competence according to Skolverket (2018). The purpose of this study is to reach a deeper understanding in how education about source criticism and information search look like in grade F-3. By interviewing six teachers (F-3), an increased understanding has been reached about how these teachers treat source criticism and information search in education. This study has been made through a qualitative research method, and through a pragmatic perspective. The study shows that the teachers think that processing knowledge in source criticism and information search is part of daily education, and that these concepts should be highlighted at an early age. The study also shows that neither source criticism nor information search are bound to specific subjects, instead they are occurring in different learning activities. The teachers wish for competence development in source criticism and digital media to promote good teaching.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to explore how social media can be used as a forum to discuss politics and also how young people use critical reflection to evaluate the information available on social media. To achieve the purpose, a qualitative research is used. The empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews with six high school students who voted in the Swedish parliamentary elections in/of 2014. The empirical data were then analyzed based on previous research on social media, and the school's mission to foster individuals who think critically. The analysis is also based on the theory of deliberative democracy model. The study shows that social media can be used as a platform for political discussions but it is in a large extent characterized by mudslinging between the sides for and against the various political elements. The survey also shows that the interviewed students do not understand the implications of source criticism. Instead they use critical thinking to determine what is a good or a bad source. The study shows that the deliberative democracy model cannot be applied to social media in its present form, but should be seen as an ideal image of how a deliberative democracy should work.

Abstract:
This work through the establishment of the sources used on the paper titled Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, seeks to analyze the textual transformation in the passage from one text to another. The Memória Histórica, of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, higher official of the Secretariat of the Province of São Paulo, is an eighteenth century manuscript deposited in the Archive of the State of São Paulo, composed mainly of texts of the eighteenth century texts written by historians, as Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica and Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Despite the confirmation of the full reproduction of many sections and paragraphs of such works, the manuscript is not configured as a literal copy of his sources, since Manuel Cardoso intentionally intervened in the texts which served as a model for the construction of his Memória, implementing to this end, a series of changes that gave rise to a new text. In the early twentieth century, after the acquisition of this works by the State Archives, historians as Capistrano de Abreu and, especially, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, raised the question of its authenticity, supported by the notions of authorship and intellectual property. As a consequence, Memória Histórica was judged as a case of plagiarism, without, however, a discussion on the motivation and purpose of textual appropriation, the relationship of that text with their sources and without consideration for writing and copying practices during the period when they were constructed, being held. So, based essentially on theoretical and methodological principles, such as Critical Sources, Philology and Textual Criticism, this research focuses on the examination and collation of the sources from Memória Histórica, and it searches to establish the categorization of filtering mechanisms for these sources, so that it is possible to reveal which variants of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu in the writing process of his work and to what extent was his was intentional intervention.

Jouffroy, Olivier. ""El Maquiavelismo degollado" (1636-37) de Claude Clément, édition et étude : l'évolution d'une pensée politique entre mondes ancien et moderne." Thesis, Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017UBFCC023/document.

Full text
Abstract:
El maquiavelismo degollado sounds as a challenge to all statesmen who could be tempted to follow the pragmatic way shown by Machiavelli rather than by the Roman Catholic Church. Then, Claude Clément was considered as a champion of the radical line in the anti-Machiavellian school of thought; however, the book has never been republished and, therefor, is not very well known. El maquiavelismo degollado is not a unique work knowing that three different books have been published, using two different languages and that the Spanish version really seems to be a re-written text rather than a simple translation. Scattered with reproductions of foreign documents, enriched with many allusions, quotations, some of them hidden away, this work seems to be a miscellany of political theories of its time. Using digital databases, this study attempts first to establish the text of El maquiavelismo degollado respecting its complexity, then to explain the main mechanism of its evolution from one version to the other and finally to determine how other works could have influenced it

Abstract:
Starting from the critics’ observations about the structure of Microcosmi, the essay focuses on the key role played by the love story between the protagonist-narrator and his wife Marisa, a sort of rewriting of Orpheus and Eurydice’s myth. Convergences and variations between the classic vulgate of the myth and the pseudo-rewriting of Microcosmi are highlighted. The essay also focuses on the Indian myth of Savitri and Sátiavan, to understand the source of the many substantial variations and, in particular, the reversal of roles between male and female characters. This myth turns out to be a privileged source for the rewritings of the Orpheus’ myth that are offered by Magris in his Microcosmi.

Abstract:
In the second half of the 16th century, in the garden of the Medicean villa of Pratolino the sculptor Valerio Cioli created, among other groups, the Villano con la falce, which represented a peasant in the act of sawing the reeds in a marshy lake where there was a salamander that spurted water from its mouth. The salamander is now lost while the Villano has been identified so far by critics with the statue of the so-called Mietitore attributed to Cioli and now in the Boboli garden deposits. In the 1990s, during restorations at Pratolino, a stone fragment of a male statue was found: through a careful analysis of the documentary and figurative sources as well as a close comparison with other works certainly by Cioli, this paper aims to recognize the fragment as the Villano con la falce.

Abstract:
‘Form’ is a notoriously capacious, unreliable, and yet necessary commonplace of both modern and early modern critical vocabulary. This essay explores the flexible and imaginatively generative ways in which the concept migrated from discourses of philosophy and logic into literary criticism and practice, drawing on a range of writers of different nationalities from across the early modern period, but focusing especially on English literature of the Elizabethan fin-de-siècle. It argues, in particular, that one of form’s principal places in that exciting cultural moment was the mind of the poet: the mind trained, structured, or ‘informed’ by poetic theory; the mind as a place which moulds and shapes the materials of language and representation into communicative forms; the mind as the source for the forms of utterance we call ‘style’.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates the types of critical discussion on religion, showing that Saudis on Twitter have been critical of Islam in all its aspects, and that while critiques have stayed within the boundaries of orthodoxy Islam—albeit stretching that boundary—many others have crossed it into outright heresy. The chapter focuses on types of criticism that exhibit a tension between sensibilities shaped by modernity and traditional understandings of religion, demonstrating the effect of modernity on religion in Saudi Arabia. The chapter also briefly discusses the method of using Twitter hashtags as a source that exhibits various forms of discussions happening in Saudi Arabia, without claim about the extent of representation of the Saudi populace. The chapter also shows that criticism of religion has not been without antecedents, and that this public criticism can be seen as a new wave facilitated by the rise and ubiquity of social media, rather than as a novel phenomenon. In this chapter, most of the tweets here have been anonymized to protect the privacy of the tweeters but the hashtags from which those tweets were selected are available for further research.

Abstract:
YouTube is a free and easily accessible tool, with growing importance in the teaching field due to the content of the videos and their interaction options through comments, responses and insertion in social networks. However, some limitations can reduce the value of this tool in University teaching if institutional control is not carried out. Our project consists of the search for experiences based on learning Anatomy on YouTube to be able to incorporate this tool in our department. Almost all researchers found that most of students use YouTube as a source of anatomical knowledge, despite limitations and criticism based on ethical and privacy issues, the video experience itself, the YouTube search algorithm, lack of quality control, advertising purposes or excessive video offer. Researchers experienced that most of the available videos had a poor quality and many mistakes, so professors must be involved in the search and selection of the best appropriate videos. We conclude that YouTube can be used as a source of knowledge for anatomical learning. However it is necessary to inform students of the inconveniences and risks, and make a critical selection by the professors of the videos that best fit in the teaching program.

Tripoli town plan (1930-1936). The consciousness of the pastThe paper recalls the well known urban facts of Tripoli during the Italian colonialism to eventually deepen the theme of the preservation of the past and not only of the Roman one, as well of the city walls. The town plan has been analyzed not only as it has been approved but also as it has been argued, not only through the drawings but also by the debate. A few letters between the professionals involved (especially Alberto Alpago Novello) and some authoritative exponents of the contemporary architecture culture and criticism (like, Gustavo Giovannoni) have assured an original source to underlines the critical background and to reveal a purpose of touristic and commercial development.

Hahn, Jeffrey L. "Characteristics and Environmental Fate of Mercury in Municipal Waste Combustor Ash Before and After Implementation of the “Maximum Achievable Control Technology” Air Standards." In 11th North American Waste-to-Energy Conference. ASMEDC, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/nawtec11-1686.

Full text
Abstract:
Mercury emissions from waste-to-energy facilities have been a source of public concern for more than ten years following release in the early 1990s of the EPA’s inventory of anthropogenic sources of mercury that listed MWCs as a significant source of mercury air emissions. Since 1990, source reduction, product reformulation, and increasingly effective battery recycling programs reduced mercury in trash by about 90%, according to the EPA. Pollution control equipment on waste-to-energy plants thereafter remove greater than 90% of the remaining mercury in the waste stream that is used as a fuel to generate power. The use of mercury by U.S. manufacturers will decline even further due to the virtual elimination of mercury from alkaline batteries and aggressive recycling and product substitution at hospitals, homes, and businesses. The Clean Air Act regulations promulgated in 1995 under the Maximum Available Control Technology standards have ensured that mercury emissions from waste-to-energy plants nationwide represent less than 3% of the U.S. inventory of man-made mercury sources, according to EPA, (or less than 1% of mercury emissions from all sources). Furthermore, health risk assessments completed over the past several years for new and existing waste-to-energy plants consistently reveal that the levels of mercury emissions result in exposures which are 100 times less than the threshold health effects standard established by federal and state regulatory agencies. Nonetheless, certain environmentalists and critics claim that the significant reduction in mercury air emissions has resulted in a transformation of the metal into the ash. In other words, the questions posed is whether what is not now going up the stack is instead finding its way into the ash. This paper answers that question with a resounding “no.” Based on an analysis of test data, mercury in MWC ash has not increased despite a greater than 90% reduction in mercury emissions.
