Abstract:
Well, you couldn't control the situation to that extent. The world just comes in on top of you. It creeps under the door. It falls out of the sky. It's all around. (Leunig) Like the world that cartoonist Michael Leunig describes, ambience is all around. Everywhere you go. You cannot get away from it. You cannot hide from it. You cannot be without it. For ambience is that which surrounds us, that which pervades. Always-on. Always by-your-side. Always already. Here, there and everywhere. Super-surround-sound. Immersive. Networked and cloudy. Ubiquitous. Although you cannot avoid ambience, you ma

IntroductionCulinary education in Ireland has long been influenced by culinary education being delivered in catering colleges in the United Kingdom (UK). Institutionalised culinary education started in Britain through the sponsorship of guild conglomerates (Lawson and Silver). The City & Guilds of London Institute for the Advancement of Technical Education opened its central institution in 1884. Culinary education in Ireland began in Kevin Street Technical School in the late 1880s. This consisted of evening courses in plain cookery. Dublin’s leading chefs and waiters of the time participat

Many films of the Australian New Wave (or Australian film renaissance) of the 1970s and 1980s can be defined as gothic, especially following Jonathan Rayner’s suggestion that “Instead of a genre, Australian Gothic represents a mode, a stance and an atmosphere, after the fashion of American Film Noir, with the appellation suggesting the inclusion of horrific and fantastic materials comparable to those of Gothic literature” (25). The American comparison is revealing. The 400 or so film productions of the Australian New Wave emerged, not in a vacuum, but in an increasingly connected and inter-mix

Introduction An ecologically responsive parable about biological mutation in a post-apocalyptic environment, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future (2022) was hailed on release as a “dream-noir” (Ehrlich), a “sci-fi noir” (Oller), and a “body-noir” (“Crimes”). The use of the term ‘noir’ here is enigmatic. As is often the case, the term is deployed to address a quality that otherwise resists easy identification. Noir has, of course, acquired a multitude of connotations and aesthetic legacies over the years. As I have observed elsewhere, one of those legacies is a concern with the physicality o

IntroductionThe wandering narrator is a familiar figure in contemporary literature. This narrator is often searching for something abstract or ill-defined connected to the past and the traces it leaves behind. The works of the German writer W.G. Sebald inspired a number of theories on the various ways a writer might intersect place, memory, and representation through seemingly aimless wandering. This article expands on the scholarship around Sebald’s themes to identify two modes of investigative wandering: (1) wandering “in place”, through a city where a past trauma has occurred, and (2) wande

Abstract Alanbrooke’s reputation as one of Britain’s outstanding military leaders of the Second World War is not in question.* General Ismay, whose personal experience went back to the Earl of Cavan in the early 1920s, rated Alanbrooke as ‘certainly the best Chief of the Imperial General Staff under whom I served at close quarters’; while Montgomery, though admittedly countering American criticism, stated publicly in 1959 that he regarded Alanbrooke as ‘the best soldier produced by any nation during Hitler’s war’. Sir David Fraser’s impressive biography Alanbrooke (1982) provides conclusive ev
