Littlejohn considers and criticizes the value theory that underlies epistemic consequentialism. He first casts doubt on veritism, the view according to which accuracy and only accuracy is the final epistemic good. One might think that the consequentialist is unscathed by this: simply put in something else as the epistemic good. But Littlejohn argues that this fails, too. For whatever it is that the consequentialist says is the epistemic good, she cannot make sense of why such a good should be promoted.

Understood in this way, the Eleatic theory constitutes a radical challenge to the possibility of natural philosophy. Aristotle discusses the Eleatics in several works, including De Caelo, De Generatione et Corruptione, and the Metaphysics. But his most extensive treatment of their monism comes at the beginning

Having ascertained that the ecosystem service paradigm is a scientific rather than a “natural” one, the text criticizes the purely analytical attitude with which it is usually used; such an attitude, together with the dominance of a purely economic evaluation, is hiding the risk of a real commodification of nature. This highlights the need to progress towards the use of the ecosystem service instrument within a transformative design framework, aiming at social equity, and which adopts an inclusive evaluation system of the local actors.

This chapter highlights how to criticize the nihil without feeding its pluripotent interface or becoming just one more fold within its immanence. It also explains how to dodge the nihil without the feint being reappropriated beforehand as one more input into its polytechnics. Critique as the critique “relative to...” is nothing without what it criticizes. The critique “relative to...” is always in need and lacking what it criticizes, such as the mode of production and understanding of an epoch. The chapter further explains that “relative to...” is also structurally constituted as the “critique of...”, which refers to a presupposition. The critique's starting point is always reactive, its affirmation and positivity belonging to the domain of the negative.

This chapter considers Niccolò Machiavelli's new and improved Rome. It attempts to locate his new land, without mistaking it either for the Rome of Livy's history or for the Rome that Machiavelli criticizes, with the benefit of hindsight. It has already been shown how Machiavelli both praises and criticizes Rome. Without reducing interpretation to a mere formula, the chapter assumes that those changes Machiavelli makes, and of which he ultimately approves, will be a part of his new Rome, whereas those he makes and ultimately criticizes indicate where in his view critical pitfalls lie. By pointing to these pitfalls he warns those who will complete his project to avoid them assiduously.
