Abstract:
Små ochmedelstora företag löser sina CRM‐ärenden med separata IT‐lösningar.
During recent decades, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) hasbeen receiving increased attention. Searches within scientific articles andliteratures show that there is a need for increased knowledge in CRMand its functionality. The company studied in this work is an independentIT and management company that provides CRM and ERP systemsto customers in various industries. According to the companyʹs experience, their customers have different requirements and expectations ofthe functionality within CRM systems and also of the CRM functionalitythat can be found in other systems, such as ERP systems. There isfunctionality within the customersʹ ERP‐/financial systems which mayoverlap functions in the CRM system. The purpose of this study is tocreate a greater understanding of CRM systemsʹ role and its functions. The results are based on a random sample of eight companies in Sweden, within various industries, which are both small and medium sized. The survey was conducted by means of interview sessions with respondentswho are familiar with the company‐customer relationshipmanagement. Interview opportunities concern the collection of informationregarding the CRM functions and features within the ERP‐/financial systems of a current CRM system, which correspond to thedesired CRM functionality. The result shows that the business needs ofnew systems can be realized through the development of existingsystems rather than new systems. It also shows that the companiesʹ ERP‐/financial systems are used purely for financial matters and not for CRMfunctionality. Small and medium‐sized enterprises solve their CRMissues and financial matters by means of separate IT solutions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate qualitative properties of certain second order delay differential equations when some proper impulse controls are added to them. The main results concern the stability and scillation by impulses. More specifically, we consider some equations and prove that their trivial solutions can be stabilized by impulses. We also consider one of these equations and prove that all solutions oscillate when proper impulse controls are imposed. We give some examples to illustrate our results. Because dealing with systems with both delays and impulses is a recent interest of some mathematicians we also considered producing a text that would encompass the fundamental theory of retarded functional differential equations with impulses. Up to now such theory could not be found in a single text as this one. Therefore we discuss and develop basic aspects of the theory as existence, uniqueness, continuability of solutions, maximal interval of existence and continuous dependence of solutions on initial values for impulsive retarded differential equations.

Computer and Information Science
Ph.D.
Quantifying the properties of interest is an important problem in many domains, e.g., assessing the condition of a patient, estimating the risk of an investment or relevance of the search result. However, the properties of interest are often latent and hard to assess directly, making it difficult to obtain classification or regression labels, which are needed to learn a predictive models from observable features. In such cases, it is typically much easier to obtain relative comparison of two instances, i.e. to assess which one is more intense (with respect to the property of interest). One framework able to learn from such kind of supervised information is ranking SVM, and it will make a basis of our approach. Applications in bio-medical datasets typically have specific additional challenges. First, and the major one, is the limited amount of data examples, due to an expensive measuring technology, and/or infrequency of conditions of interest. Such limited number of examples makes both identification of patterns/models and their validation less useful and reliable. Repeated samples from the same subject are collected on multiple occasions over time, which breaks IID sample assumption and introduces dependency structure that needs to be taken into account more appropriately. Also, feature vectors are highdimensional, and typically of much higher cardinality than the number of samples, making models less useful and their learning less efficient. Hypothesis of this dissertation is that use of the functional norm regularization can help alleviating mentioned challenges, by improving generalization abilities and/or learning efficiency of predictive models, in this case specifically of the approaches based on the ranking SVM framework. The temporal nature of data was addressed with loss that fosters temporal smoothness of functional mapping, thus accounting for assumption that temporally proximate samples are more correlated. Large number of feature variables was handled using the sparsity inducing L1 norm, such that most of the features have zero effect in learned functional mapping. Proposed sparse (temporal) ranking objective is convex but non-differentiable, therefore smooth dual form is derived, taking the form of quadratic function with box constraints, which allows efficient optimization. For the case where there are multiple similar tasks, joint learning approach based on matrix norm regularization, using trace norm L* and sparse row L21 norm was also proposed. Alternate minimization with proximal optimization algorithm was developed to solve the mentioned multi-task objective. Generalization potentials of the proposed high-dimensional and multi-task ranking formulations were assessed in series of evaluations on synthetically generated and real datasets. The high-dimensional approach was applied to disease severity score learning from gene expression data in human influenza cases, and compared against several alternative approaches. Application resulted in scoring function with improved predictive performance, as measured by fraction of correctly ordered testing pairs, and a set of selected features of high robustness, according to three similarity measures. The multi-task approach was applied to three human viral infection problems, and for learning the exam scores in Math and English. Proposed formulation with mixed matrix norm was overall more accurate than formulations with single norm regularization.

This dissertation examines Hollywood remakes of US films in order to discern how the narrative and formal modifications between originals and remakes are analogous across sets of films. Performing a discourse analysis that utilizes theories of popular culture and social memory, I argue that the patterns of changes confirm that remakes fulfill some functions of modern-day folktales: stories that are adapted for the needs and interests of their contemporary audiences but that simultaneously tend to reaffirm and promote traditional ideologies. By analyzing shifts and alterations in narrative, visual and structural tropes and changes in trends of representation, I examine the ways in which such phenomena as political and social movements and historic events are depicted and consider what cultural needs these representations may fulfill for their audiences. My process was driven by several research questions. First, what kinds of films get remade? Secondly, what are the differences in content and structure in each set of films analyzed in this study and what are the relationships between the remakes and their original source films? Finally, my primary questions are: how do narrative structures, characterizations and plots change or stabilize within the same story over time? How can we utilize these changes and constants to identify the cultural functions remakes may serve that make them so prevalent right now?

Pratima Sadangi in a Ph.D. thesis submitted to Utkal University proved results on degree of approximation of functions by operators associated with their Fourier series. In this dissertation, we consider degree of approximation of functions in H_(α,p) by different operators. In Chapter 1 we mention basic definitions needed for our work. In Chapter 2 we discuss different methods of summation. In Chapter 3 we define the H_(α,p) metric and present the degree of approximation problem relating to Fourier series and conjugate series of functions in the H_(α,p) metric using Karamata (K^λ) means. In Chapter 4 we present the degree of approximation of an integral associated with the conjugate series by the Euler, Borel and (e,c) means of a series analogous to the Hardy-Littlewood series in the H_(α,p) metric. In Chapter 5 we propose problems to be solved in the future.

Ahmed, Mohamed. "Multi-Level Safety Performance Functions for High Speed Facilities." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5091.

Full text
Abstract:
High speed facilities are considered the backbone of any successful transportation system; Interstates, freeways, and expressways carry the majority of daily trips on the transportation network. Although these types of roads are relatively considered the safest among other types of roads, they still experience many crashes, many of which are severe, which not only affect human lives but also can have tremendous economical and social impacts. These facts signify the necessity of enhancing the safety of these high speed facilities to ensure better and efficient operation. Safety problems could be assessed through several approaches that can help in mitigating the crash risk on long and short term basis. Therefore, the main focus of the research in this dissertation is to provide a framework of risk assessment to promote safety and enhance mobility on freeways and expressways. Multi-level Safety Performance Functions (SPFs) were developed at the aggregate level using historical crash data and the corresponding exposure and risk factors to identify and rank sites with promise (hot-spots). Additionally, SPFs were developed at the disaggregate level utilizing real-time weather data collected from meteorological stations located at the freeway section as well as traffic flow parameters collected from different detection systems such as Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) and Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS). These disaggregate SPFs can identify real-time risks due to turbulent traffic conditions and their interactions with other risk factors. In this study, two main datasets were obtained from two different regions. Those datasets comprise historical crash data, roadway geometrical characteristics, aggregate weather and traffic parameters as well as real-time weather and traffic data. At the aggregate level, Bayesian hierarchical models with spatial and random effects were compared to Poisson models to examine the safety effects of roadway geometrics on crash occurrence along freeway sections that feature mountainous terrain and adverse weather. At the disaggregate level; a main framework of a proactive safety management system using traffic data collected from AVI and RTMS, real-time weather and geometrical characteristics was provided. Different statistical techniques were implemented. These techniques ranged from classical frequentist classification approaches to explain the relationship between an event (crash) occurring at a given time and a set of risk factors in real time to other more advanced models. Bayesian statistics with updating approach to update beliefs about the behavior of the parameter with prior knowledge in order to achieve more reliable estimation was implemented. Also a relatively recent and promising Machine Learning technique (Stochastic Gradient Boosting) was utilized to calibrate several models utilizing different datasets collected from mixed detection systems as well as real-time meteorological stations. The results from this study suggest that both levels of analyses are important, the aggregate level helps in providing good understanding of different safety problems, and developing policies and countermeasures to reduce the number of crashes in total. At the disaggregate level, real-time safety functions help toward more proactive traffic management system that will not only enhance the performance of the high speed facilities and the whole traffic network but also provide safer mobility for people and goods. In general, the proposed multi-level analyses are useful in providing roadway authorities with detailed information on where countermeasures must be implemented and when resources should be devoted. The study also proves that traffic data collected from different detection systems could be a useful asset that should be utilized appropriately not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to mitigate increased safety risks. The overall proposed framework can maximize the benefit of the existing archived data for freeway authorities as well as for road users.

Window functions have been extensively used for the design of SAW filters. The classical truncated cosine series functions, such as the Hamming and Blackmann functions, are only a few of an infinite set of such functions. The derivation of this set of functions from orthonormal basis sets and the criteria for obtaining the constant coefficients of the functions are presented. These functions are very useful because of the closed-form expressions and their easily recognizable Fourier transform. Another approach to the design of Gaussian shaped filters having a desired sidelobe level using a 40 term cosine series will be presented as well. This approach is again non-iterative and a near equi-ripple sidelobe level filter could be achieved. A deconvolution technique will also be presented. this has the advantage of being non-iterative, simple and fast. This design method produces results comparable to the Dolph-Chebyshev technique.

Abstract:
Background: Conventional chemotherapeutics target bulk tumour cells and generally leave cancer stem cell (CSC) populations unaffected. Recent literature characterized the presence and the role of CSC in several types of solid tumors, including colorectal cancer. Colorectal CSCs (CCSCs) display enhanced WNT/β-catenin pathway activity, sustaining self-renewal and tumor-initiating capacity. Thus, CCSCs are crucial for tumour recurrence and metastasis. As one of the main contributors to sustained self-renewal activity in CCSCs, enhanced formation of β-catenin/CBP complex is fostering transactivation of canonical WNT target genes such as c-myc. However, maintenance of healthy intestinal stem cells also dependents on the canonical WNT pathway. Thus, selective targeting CCSCs while sparring normal intestinal cells is still a significant challenge. Interestingly, Sam68 is a key mediator of the interaction between β-catenin and CBP. It has been reported as a “druggable” target to selectively disrupt β-catenin/CBP in CSCs. Indeed, CWP232228 successfully targets CSCs in AML by facilitating Sam68/CBP complex formation, and consequently lowering the abundance of β-catenin/CBP complexes. CWP232228 was clinically tested on multiple human cancers. Unfortunately, such clinical trials were halted due to unknown causes, and limited information was released on clinical safety and benefits. Consequently, developing more potent pharmacological modulators of Sam68/CBP complex formation is still highly relevant to eradicate CCSCs. Here we describe the discovery and characterization of a new CWP analog, known as YB-0158, which displays enhanced potency and neoplastic selectivity against CCSC. Methods and Results: Following the confirmation that ICG/CWP class of compounds bind to Sam68 in CSCs, I used in silico docking methods to screen for CWP analogs having high predicted affinity for Sam68 Cterminal proline-rich domain. Using high content imaging techniques, I confirmed our top candidate (YB-0158) as more potent vs. CWP parent molecule to compromise cell growth, to induce loss of pluripotency, and to increase Sam68 nuclear localization in a surrogate model of human CSCs. YB-0158 also displayed enhanced selective toxicity in colorectal cancer models vs. normal intestinal epithelium progenitor cells. Moreover, I confirmed that YB-0158 exert negative impact on cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis and reducing proliferation. Lentiviral-based knockdowns explicitly displayed decrease in drug effectivity in the absence of Sam68, reinforcing the essential role of Sam68 mediating ICG-001/CWP response in CSCs. I demonstrated that Sam68 expression is enriched in tumor-initiating cell fractions derived from primary colorectal tumor tissues vs. bulk heterogeneous tumor organoids. Therefore, YB-0158 showed striking efficacy at supressing tumor-initiation activity in a patient-based serial organoid formation assay. Finally, YB-0158 eradicated CSCs activity in vivo as demonstrated by a syngeneic mouse-to-mouse serial transplantation assay. Conclusion: Overall, YB-0158 is a novel analog of CWP232228 with superior potency to target CCSCs activity through facilitation of Sam68 nuclear localization, thus reducing the interaction frequency between CBP and β-catenin.

Mellin, Ronan Peter. "Investigating the function of VANGL2 in intestinal homeostasis & disease." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31186.

Abstract:
Introduction: Van Gogh-Like 2 (VANGL2) is a scaffolding planar cell polarity protein involved in non-canonical Wnt signalling. It has been shown to have crucial roles in regulating epithelial development and homeostasis. Moreover, VANGL2 has been implicated in human cancers, with increased expression and copy number amplification seen in several cancer contexts. Many related components within this pathway have also been linked to cancer development, with VANGL2 expression known to regulate factors involved in cell migration and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling in cell lines. These cellular processes tend to be erroneously activated in cancer. VANGL2 is known to inhibit the classical driver pathway of colorectal cancer (CRC), canonical, or β- catenin dependant, Wnt signalling, in CRC cell lines. The aim of this thesis is to determine the expression of VANGL2 in CRC, and to investigate how VANGL2 may act to regulate intestinal homeostasis and disease. Methods: Transcriptional verification of VANGL2 expression in the mouse intestine was carried out by quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR), and transcripts localised within the murine colon using RNA-In Situ Hybridisation (RNAISH). Expression and localisation of the VANGL2 protein and related non-canonical Wnt signalling components was confirmed using immuno-histochemistry (IHC). Furthermore, using a combination of human Tissue Micro-Array (TMA), transcriptional data and genomic data, we determined an association between VANGL2 on tumour grade and disease-free survival. To functionally validate the effects of VANGL2 on colorectal biology, we used a model in which VANGL2 is selectively deleted from the colonic epithelium using Villin-CreERT Vangl2flox mouse lines. Using a combination of molecular biology methods, we identified the ECM as differentially regulated following VANGL2 modulation. To test the role of VANGL2 in colorectal cancer, we used a murine colorectal cancer model in which adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) is deleted from colonic epithelium resulting in the formation of cancer concurrently with deletion of Vangl2. We evaluated survival of these mice as well as tumour number and size. Tumour tissue was analysed using IHC, qRT-PCR and 3-Dimensional organoid culture. Results: Within this thesis I have illustrated that the murine colonic epithelium expresses Vangl2, and other components known to interact with VANGL2 including Vangl1, Wnt5A, and Protein Tyrosine Kinase 7 (Ptk7). I have also shown that VANGL2 is expressed within the human colonic epithelium. I go on to show that 9.2% of human CRC possesses VANGL2 transcriptional alterations which correlates with a worsened disease-free survival (DFS) rate among patients. Using IHC, I also show that higher grade CRC is associated with increased VANGL2 expression. In our murine cancer model, mice with single or dual-copy loss of VANGL2 were found to have a reduced number of colonic tumours, while maintaining similar tumour size. Investigations to identify how VANGL2 may have control of tumour initiation were carried out focussing on the ECM. I found that, contrary to what I have discovered in the healthy murine colon, tumours from VANGL2-deficient mice had increased transcription of the ECM markers Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (Sparc) and Decorin (Dcn), as well as increased expression of the ECM regulators Matrix Metallopeptidase 9 (Mmp9) and Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases 1 (Timp1). Changes in the ECM was also seen at the protein level, with increases in staining for the ECM components Col1 (Collagen, type I), and Laminin in VANGL2-deficient tissue. The ECM modulator Connective Tissue Growth Factor (Ctgf), is implicated in multiple cancers including CRC and is increased within VANGL2-deficient tumours at both the transcript and protein level, implicating Ctgf in increasing the ECM of these tumours.

Assad, Merfit. "ON THE USE OF GAUSSIAN FILTER FUNCTIONS FOR ADAPTIVE OPTICS." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4103.

Full text
Abstract:
For adaptive optic systems, the use of aperture filter functions calculated using various Zernike modes can be useful in removing lower-order aberrations caused by atmospheric turbulence. Traditionally, these filter functions are calculated using the step function depicting a hard aperture that introduces integrals that are sometimes difficult to integrate and must be done numerically. The Gaussian method can be used in place of the conventional method for calculating the aperture filter functions. Evaluation of the Gaussian approximation for modeling a finite receiver aperture can be made by comparison of reduction in phase variance with results achieved using the conventional method. The validity of Gaussian approximation in this application is demonstrated by the consistency of results between the two methodologies. Comparison of reduction in scintillation by the two methodologies reveals several benefits derived from utilization of Gaussian approximation. The Gaussian approximation produces data that can be interpreted analytically. It further produces greater scintillation reduction. This paper will first examine the use of statistical models for predicting atmospheric turbulence and then the use of Zernike polynomials in adaptive optics. Next, this paper compares the reduction of phase variance and scintillation using the conventional method with the Gaussian approximation to evaluate the effectiveness of the new filter functions. The results of these comparisons are presented both as mathematical expressions and graphically.

This study examined the association between executive functions (EF), trait rumination, and symptoms and diagnosis of unipolar depression in early adolescence. In addition, the current study examined associations between executive functions and risk for depression due to maternal history of depression. Participants were 486 early adolescents (230 males, 256 females; M age = 12.88 years; SD = .62) and their mothers, who were recruited through local schools as part of the Temple University (TU) Adolescent Cognition and Emotion (ACE) Project. Measures included (a) a semi-structured diagnostic interview of mother and adolescent, (b) youth self-report forms assessing depressive symptoms and trait rumination, (c) mother-report forms assessing demographic information and offspring pubertal status, and (d) behavioral tests of EF (sustained, selective and divided attention, attentional set shifting, and working memory). Deficits in executive function were not associated with higher levels of trait rumination. Better sustained attention was marginally significantly positively associated with higher levels of trait rumination after controlling for concurrent depressive symptoms. Conversely, poorer sustained attention was significantly associated with depressive symptoms after controlling for rumination. Gender moderated the set shifting-rumination association, such that better set shifting accuracy was significantly associated with higher levels of trait rumination in boys only. Diagnosis did not moderate EF-rumination associations. No association was found between EF deficits and adolescent lifetime history of unipolar depression. Likewise, no association was found between EF deficits and maternal lifetime history of unipolar depression. In conclusion, findings do not provide evidence that EF deficits are associated with trait rumination in early adolescence, either alone or in interaction with diagnosis or gender. Rather, findings suggest dissociable patterns of association between EF and depression versus rumination and are more consistent with theories postulating that trait rumination is associated with enhanced performance on some tests of EF. In addition, findings do not provide evidence for an association between EF deficits and lifetime history of depression in early adolescence and do not suggest that deficits are present in adolescents at high risk (due to maternal history of disorder) of depression prior to first onset of disorder. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract: Dementia consists in a disease, usually as of chronic and progressive nature, in which there is disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions, including memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity and judgment. Its main feature is the accentuated impairment of memory that is associated with disorders of motor coordination and balance. Its diagnosis is clinic and it does not present any biological marker that can be assessed easily. The treatment is usually symptomatic and it aims to minimize the cognitive and physical decline inherent to the illness. Although scarce, a few scientific evidences have been indicating benefits of motor interventions performed on a regular basis in patients with dementia. This study aimed to analize the effects of two motor interventions on the cognitive functions and on the balance of institutionilized elderly people with dementia. A 6-month longitudinal research design comprised 54 participants assigned into three groups: G1, G2 and G3. The first group (G1) was assisted by an interdisciplinary program, comprising Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Education intervention. The intervention was held in 2-hour sessions for 5 days per week. A physiotherapist alone carried out the intervention in G2, 1-hour sessions for 3 days per week. The G3 was considered as control because its participants were not assisted by any motor intervention. Medication was kept unchanged for the three groups

Rosen, Jonathan Novick. "The function of the Heg-CCM pathway in zebrafish heart development." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10744.

Abstract:
The Heart of glass-Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (Heg-CCM) pathway is essential for heart development in zebrafish and mouse. In zebrafish, mutants for the Heg-CCM genes ccm1, ccm2, and heg exhibit an extreme dilation of the heart chambers and inflow tract and completely lack blood circulation. The mechanisms by which this pathway regulates heart development are incompletely understood. Two major impediments to our knowledge are the paucity of genes known to participate in the Heg-CCM pathway and a lack of information about how the Heg-CCM pathway interacts with other signaling pathways in live embryos.
