The aim of this paper is to analyse and compare the official media reports published in the Republic of North (RN) Macedonia and some other South-Eastern European Countries, such as Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Bulgaria. We have collected data from sample of 221 psychiatrists from Croatia (41 psychiatrists), Macedonia (81 psychiatrists) and Serbia (99 psychiatrists). AbstractThis chapter presents first findings from the BHS by providing data on main incident, offender, victim, and procedural characteristics of (lethal) violence in six countries of Southeastern Europe and the Balkans: Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Romania, and Slovenia. The discussion will concentrate on regional commons, as well as country specifics with a particular focus on comparison between completed and attempted homicides. In terms of the type of violence, only the most relevant ones will be analyzed, whereby this relates to both the most prevalent and most interesting for the regional context. Thus, certain methodological aspects, like those related to missing data and the merging of datasets with different counting units, will be presented. Bearing in mind the overall scope of the BHS with more than 200 different variables, this chapter clearly presents but a fraction of all findings. Nevertheless, it is a solid starting point for future topic-wise more focused in-depth analyses, and will hopefully deliver food for thought on new lines of (lethal) violence and homicide research.

AbstractThe Balkan Homicide Study (BHS) fills a considerable gap in current European homicide research. Its findings shed first light on the phenomenology of violence in this region of Europe. The BHS provides original empirical data from 2073 prosecution and court case files in six countries: Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Romania, and Slovenia. By analyzing data on 2416 offenders and 2379 victims, the book at hand takes a close look at situational, criminogenic, victimogenic, and procedural characteristics of (lethal) violence in the Balkans. It thus investigates the highly heterogeneous types of different (potentially) deadly situations, thereby focusing on what might make them become deadly and what could be possible protective traits on the side of victims. Such an investigation of pathways into lethal violence becomes possible only if lethal violence (completed homicides) is studied together with non-lethal violence (attempted homicides). This approach however considerably broadens the subject and scope of homicide research, which commonly deals primarily with lethal violence. This chapter provides a brief overview of the pros and cons of such an approach and briefly sketches the study’s background. It also discusses the relevance of the criminal justice’s power to define violence, introduces the Balkan-violence-paradox, and presents the study’s conceptual, as well as terminological framework.

This chapter traces the common past of the healthcare systems of seven countries that formerly were part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY): Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. Due to their common state histories, these countries witnessed similar health policy developments, marked by the introduction of a social insurance system under the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and establishment of universal healthcare during the communist period. After the break-up of the SFRY in 1992, the countries departed on independent policy trajectories, which were protracted and disrupted by conflicts over state-building and nationalism, and in some countries also by civil war.

The research area of this chapter includes determinants that influence early-stage entrepreneurial activity in the agro sector in the countries of the Southeast Europe region (SEE). The research implies determinants such as national culture, individual entrepreneurial characteristics, as well as entrepreneurial aspirations (growth, innovation, and internationalization). Data for the research was provided by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor database. To form a research sample, data were collected from agrobusiness entrepreneurs in Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and North Macedonia. In line with the theory, past research and the result of empirical research, authors propose a model consisted of determinants that influence early-stage entrepreneurial activity in the agro sector in the countries of SEE.

The research was conducted on the sample of 18 regions in six European countries: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, and Romania. The database was prepared, and the statistical processing was performed in SPSS. In this data analysis, the following methods were used: comparative analysis, correlation, and regression analysis. The results of the research showed that the impact of the determinants—import dependence, the number of pupils enrolled in secondary education, gross domestic expenditure on research and development, and the number of companies per 10,000 inhabitants on the competitiveness of the region—are (statistically) significant.

Abstract:
The Southern Eastern Europe regional outlook presents a comparative assessment of the historical development of the healthcare system, health politics, and selected health-related indicators for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. Despite variations in their healthcare systems during communism, since 1989 the countries of the region have all undertaken efforts to introduce or consolidate social health insurance and combine it with a mix of public and private provision. In most of the countries at least half of healthcare financing originates from compulsory contributory health insurance, but in many of them, out-of-pocket payments constitute an extremely large share. Given this financial burden, satisfaction in the region is very low. Health outcomes are unsatisfactory, with low average life expectancy, very high infant mortality, and relatively high levels of health inequality. Unmet need is high, especially in Romania, mainly due to costs. Since at least 2004, healthcare has tended to be a moderately salient issue in Southern Eastern Europe. The key healthcare issues in the region have been incomplete or ineffective social health insurance coverage, privatization, insufficient financing, and high out-of-pocket payments, especially for pharmaceuticals and private services.
