Since the first report of Mycoplasma-associated polyarthritis in farmed Nile crocodiles in 1995, the disease has spread across Zimbabwe and South Africa and has resulted in significant economic losses on infected farms. Due to poor response to antimicrobial treatment and frequent relapses, the use of an autogenous vaccine to manage disease outbreaks was evaluated. Two previous trials had been performed with a similar vaccine and the results suggested that the vaccine could be effective in alleviating disease, although the numbers of animals were limited in both. Abstract The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) forms the basis of a crocodile farming industry for the international skin trade in Australia. For this industry, mortalities from stress and disease are common due to a compromise of the adaptive immunity. Currently the genetic understanding of the immune response is poor, which in turn impedes an understanding of genes, and hence genetic markers, affecting disease susceptibility. As a key component of adaptive immunity is the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), this thesis characterises the MHC genes with an emphasis on the saltwater

Abstract:
Aquatic species, such as the African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), are considered to be valuable sentinels of ecosystem health. Although the Nile crocodile is still widely distributed in Africa, viable populations of wild crocodiles are nowadays only found in protected areas in South Africa, like the Kruger National Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The sharptooth catfish, on the other hand, also has a wide distribution in Africa, but is still commonly found in nearly all waterbodies in South Africa. Biomarkers to determine the health stat

Le Club du Crocodile et ses évolutions, de sa naissance en juillet 1980 à la mort de son fondateur, Altiero Spinelli, en mai 1986, sont au cœur de ce travail de recherche. Internationally, water resources are facing increasing pressure due to over-exploitation and pollution. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) has been accepted internationally as a paradigm for integrative and sustainable management of water resources. However, in practice, the implementation and success of IWRM policies has been hampered by the lack of availability of integrative decision support tools, especially within the context of limited resources and observed data. This is true for the Crocodile River Catchment (CRC), located within the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The ca

The South African crocodile industry has the potential to produce Nile crocodile skins, which are in high demand by the global fashion industry. The crocodile industry is an important economic resource to South Africa and Southern Africa. The main purpose of rearing Nile crocodiles at intensive production units is to produce viable hatchlings which will be grown to produce quality skins. The production of sufficient hatchlings depends on high hatching percentage of clutches. It has been observed that the hatching percentage varies among clutches. We do not know that whether the poor hatc
