Abstract In this paper, several analytical models are presented for the optimal design of a trapezoidal composite channel cross-section. The objective function is the cost function per unit length of the channel, which includes the excavation and lining costs. To define the system, design variables including channel depth, channel width, side slopes, freeboard, and roughness coefficients were used. The constraints include Manning’s equation, flow velocity, Froude number, and water surface width. The Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) algorithm was used to solve the optim

However, obtaining desirable flow of liquids in microfluidics is still a limiting factor in the practical implementation. The influence of the cross-section shape on pressure driven viscous flow through a uniform channel is assessed by presenting analytical flow solutions of velocity distribution, volume flow rate and shear stress for different cross-section shapes. Next, a simplified flow model through a non-uniform constricted channel is formulated which accounts for flow inertia, viscosity and cross-section shape. The model outcome is quantified for different fluids, flows and geometrical properties relevant to physiological flows. It is seen that a commonly applied quasi-one-dimensional (1D) model is not accu

Then the resonance parameters are located as its poles on an appropriate sheet of the Riemann surface of the energy. The main advantage of the method is that the S-matrix is constructed in such a way that it has proper analytic structure, i.e. for any number of two-body channels, the branching at all the channel thresholds is represented via exact analytic expressions in terms of the channel momenta. The way the S-matrix is constructed makes it possible not only to locate multi-channel reso

Three-dimensional equations of motion for inviscid and incompressible fluid are first integrated over a channel cross-section. To express the resulting one-dimensional equations in terms of the cross-sectional-averaged longitudinal velocity and spanwise-averaged free-surface elevation, the characteristic depth and width of the channel cross-section are assumed to be smaller than the typical wavelength, resulting in Boussinesq-type equations. Viscous effects are also considered. The new model is, therefore, adequate for
