Recent research within the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) field has shown the relevance of perceptual features for musical signals. The idea is to identify a small set of features that are natural descriptions from a perceptual perspective. The notion of perceptual features is based on the ecological approach to music, that is, focussing on sound events rather than spectral information. Furthermore, MIR research has had an overemphasis on Western music and listeners. This leads to the question of whether the concept of perceptual features is culturally independent or not. Furthermore, very little research has been done to verify that these supposed linguistic features of deception are universal. In addition, few studies have researched the cross-cultural perceptions of deception, which knowledge could greatly improve the detection of deception across cultures. Item response theory (IRT) is a modern measurement theory that, as its name implies, focuses mainly at the item level as opposed to the test level. The underlying principle of IRT is that a relationship exists between an individual’s ability and how the individual responds to items on a test. IRT offers item-level details not provided through classical approaches. The aims of this chapter are to (1) provide a brief overview of IRT, (2) demonstrate the basic features of IRT using existing data, and (3) walk the reader through the key steps in conducting IRT analysis using IRTPRO®. Defying the conventional split between “theory” and “methodology,” this book introduces a yet unarticulated and thus far never systematized method of theorizing designed to reveal abstract social patterns. Insisting that such methodology can actually be taught, it tries to make the mental processes underlying the practice of a “concept-driven sociology” more explicit. Many sociologists tend to study the specific, often at the expense of also studying the generic. To correct this imbalance, the book examines the theoretico-methodological process by which we can “distill” generic social patterns
