Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to characterize the cross-functional integration processes between marketing and logistics, while considering five basic elements: boundary spanning activities, integration factors, level of integration, formality/informality and impacts of integration. Design/methodology/approach – After an extensive literature review, five case studies were performed and in-depth interviews conducted. Both within-case and cross-case analysis was performed to better understand the cross-functional integration processes between marketing and logistics. Findings – A characterization of cross-functional integration in the form of a managerial framework was proposed. This framework presents the elements in a process view, instead of disconnected parts of the integration processes. The framework and process perspective helps to explain the integration process, the roles and impacts of integration within organizations, while considering cultural formality and informality. Research limitations/implications – Qualitative data collection and analysis methods cannot achieve amplitude with respect to sampling nor generalize results. In spite of this, the implications revealed by the propositions may be applied not only to Brazilian companies, but organizations in other countries as well, due to the high level of heterogeneity of the sample, and the fact that they represent multinational organizations. Therefore, further research using broad-based survey data could test the correlations between the elements of cross-functional integration processes. Practical implications – The identification of the cross-functional integration processes within organizations can help managers to facilitate the efforts of integration between marketing and logistics, reducing conflicts and improving business performance. Originality/value – Case studies focussing specifically on five Brazilian organizations help provide evidence for an initial definition of cross-functional integration processes by analyzing five key elements according to their characteristics and respective roles. This research provides a strong foundation for future broad-based survey research.

Objective - The paper sheds light on customer database dynamics, dimensions and characteristics of adapted benefits connected with their business potential in a circular economy. The study suggests that allocating funds on data compliance could bring added value to the companies in specific conditions linked to the processing of client data. Methodology/Technique - This study examines the impact of a Customer-Centric approach in relation to Data Governance. The empirical part of the study is based on data gathered from middle and top level managers and owners of projects responsible for managing customer data in multinational enterprises across EMEA region. EU companies could use Data Protection legislation as a springboard, as their financial benefits are higher than the respective costs necessary to comply with. Thus, a perspective management practice investigates the following roles: cross-functional management and combining wide customer-centric units (marketing, sales, service, product), external client process integration, data governance engagement (there is a balance of the current expertise from the customer's data that is nested within functions and capacity to evaluate inter-functional influence of client data-driven management). PurposeCross-functional integration has been an important factor for manufacturing firms' performance outcomes. The study aims to expand previous research by investigating the moderating role of goal-based incentive systems in the relationship between cross-functional integration and competitive performance.Design/methodology/approachBased on multi-source data from 269 manufacturing firms around the world, regression analysis is used to test the proposed research model.FindingsThe authors' findings suggest that cross-functional integration enhances manufacturers' innovation and operational performance. Moreover, cross-functional integration has a stronger impact on operational performance when firms implement a well-designed goal-based incentive system. However, the authors find that the goal-based incentive system does not moderate the relationship between cross-functional integration and innovation performance.Originality/valueThe study, by investigating the fit between goal-based incentive systems and cross-functional integration, provides practical insights into the ways that firms apply cross-functional integration and goal-based incentive systems to enhance competitive performance.

Organizational competitiveness is enhanced by implementing supply chain integration. Organizations, through information technology, can integrate internal and external cross-functional. The team assigned to run the integration system in its function is designated as the key user who can implement and maintain an ongoing basis. Key user capabilities are needed to maintain a digital supply chain in information technology systems to integrate internally and externally. Data analysis using Partial least squares (PLS) on 89 hotel organizations with a one-star category or more shows that key user capability significantly affects internal cross-functional integration (β = 0.728) and external cross-functional integration (β = 0.127). Key user capability has an impact on supply chain flexibility (β = 0.370) while internal cross-functional integration influences increasing supply chain flexibility (β = 0.373) and financial performance (β = 0.421). External cross-functional integration increases supply chain flexibility (β = 0.316) and financial performance (β = 0.441). Lastly, supply chain flexibility impacts increasing financial flexibility (β = 0.192). The research contributes enrichment to the theory of digital supply chain and practical contribution to enlighten top management in information technology investment.

In today’s dynamic and competitive business environment, data are crucial for sustaining a competitive advantage. Organizations are also constantly seeking ways to enhance their innovation capabilities in order to stay ahead of the competition. One critical factor that has been identified as influential in enabling innovation are the organization’s data management capabilities. Past studies have found that cross-functional integration may enhance the impact of data management on innovation. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the influence of data management capabilities on explorative and exploitative innovation by considering the role of cross-functional integration as a moderating variable. This study used 116 data samples from medium and large companies across different industries in Indonesia. The PLS-SEM analysis was applied to test the research hypotheses. The results indicate that data management capabilities as a third-order construct, consisting of three dimensions, namely data governance, technology, and skills, have significant direct influences on explorative and exploitative innovation. This study demonstrated that cross-functional integration still plays an important role in amplifying the relationship between data management capabilities and innovation capabilities, especially in relation to explorative innovation.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to predict the antecedents of the integration level among marketing, logistics and production, considering the influence of formal and informal factors that generate integration and the existence of conflicts. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 179 participants from all regions of Brazil was conducted. A parsimonious model including four dimensions and 34 variables was developed through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Findings The field data corroborate studies dealing with the impact of various formal and informal integration factors on the cross-functional integration level as a construct. Furthermore, this paper concludes that the level of cross-functional can be defined as: the intensity of the relationship among internal functions which can be measured by the mutual existence of formal and informal factors and the absence of manifest conflicts. Research limitations/implications The findings of this paper cannot be generalized because of the convenience sampling. Future research could apply a probabilistic sampling and try to explore other geographical settings in both national and international contexts. Practical implications The proposed model can generate important information for managers by pointing out variables that can predict the integration level and their impacts on the organizational performance. The paper concludes with examples about how the model could be useful in several practical situations. Originality/value This paper proposes a model with reasonable accuracy to predict the integration level and overcomes prior research limitations with respect to models to predict the antecedents of the integration level, particularly the role of conflicts in the integration processes.

It identifies key challenges to cross-functional collaboration(CFC), including siloed mindsets, communication barriers, global complexity, data inconsistencies, and resistance to change, which collectively hinder seamless coordination. The paper proposes actionable strategies to overcome these barriers, such as integrated Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), shared metrics, technology enablement through platforms like SAP, leadership governance, cultural transformation, and risk management integration. From an Industry 4.0 perspective, supply chain actors (suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, and third-party logistics operators) are integrated into a collaborative network based on information-sharing to improve the overall supply chain performance. Real data can be captured and systematically processed into information, hence dealing with uncertainty. Poor integration may lead to supply chain disruptions. This paper examines the role of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) for integrating the supply chain, to which a systematic literature review (SLR) has been applied. First, according to the research questions, the I4.0 technologies adopted for supply chain integration were identified. Second, the approaches for integrating the supply chain at I4.0 were examined and classified by strategy (vertical, horizontal, and end-to-end integration). Third, the functional and cross-functional approaches for supply chain integration at I4.0 were also examined. Finally, it was discussed which traditional SCI approaches can be upgraded to the Industry 4.0 era and the future research directions.

Cross-functional integration is a necessity as operations become ever more important for the formulation and implementation of overall company strategy. Despite the abundance of theoretical studies extolling the advisability of smooth intra-company interfacing, the operations strategy literature has not been as prolific regarding tools to increase this desired integration. This paper develops an uncomplicated multi-period analytical model that helps increase coordination of the engineering, purchasing, marketing, and sales areas among themselves and with manufacturing by focusing on the overall company objective of maximizing contribution to profits. The paper begins describing the theoretical underpinnings of production and operations processes as they relate to the strategy of the firm, presents the model, and then expands its scope to include interfaces with other functional areas of the firm. The methodology is based on a two-stage multi-period optimization model for aggregate production planning encompassing component supply management and final assembly. This methodology expands the concept of Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) through a linear programming model that uses cost and profit contribution data to select the optimal product and customer mix. The sensitivity of results to costing and pricing data leads to increased cross-functional coordination. An illustrative application improving the medium-term operations strategy of a Brazilian OEM manufacturer is presented.

This article introduces a novel algorithmic approach to product backlog prioritization that addresses the critical challenge of balancing diverse stakeholder needs in software development. The article presents a comprehensive framework for synthesizing enhancement requests from Customer Success, Support, and Sales teams to generate data-driven prioritization decisions. The article demonstrates significant improvements in development efficiency and business outcomes by implementing an automated system that considers customer feedback patterns, support ticket frequencies, and sales pipeline obstacles. The article achieved an 85% accuracy rate in predicting high-impact feature requirements while reducing prioritization processing time by 83.5%. Key performance indicators showed substantial improvements, including a 64% increase in feature adoption rates, a 28% reduction in sales cycle length, and a 47% decrease in feature-related support tickets. The implementation also enhanced cross-functional alignment, resulting in an 89% alignment between Product and Sales priorities and a 73% reduction in conflicting feature requests. This article contributes to the theoretical understanding and practical application of product development optimization, providing organizations with a scalable framework for making more informed and efficient prioritization decisions in modern software development environments.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the extent to which different patterns of cross-functional integration and the operations strategy (OS) process may be explained by national cultures differences.Design/methodology/approachPerceptual survey data from 105 manufacturing plants in four countries were used to validate the constructs and to test the hypotheses. The plants are located in two Western and two Eastern countries with different industrialization and development backgrounds (Brazil, China, Germany and South Korea). CFA validated the constructs, and ANOVA andt-tests evaluated the differences between levels of four Hofstede’s elements (i.e. power distance, individualism vs collectivism, uncertainty avoidance and long-term vs short-term orientation) on the OS process enablers (i.e. leadership for cross-functional integration and functional integration) and elements (i.e. manufacturing strategy linkage to corporate strategy and formulation of manufacturing strategy).FindingsResults suggest that different OS and OM processes are present in different national cultures. Leadership for cross-functional integration and manufacturing strategy linkage to corporate strategy differ between levels of power distance, individualism vs collectivism and uncertainty avoidance. Functional integration and formulation of manufacturing strategy also present differences according to the degree of individualism vs collectivism and long-term orientation.Originality/valueResults indicate that national culture is a key aspect for the OS process. Prior studies usually do not consider cultural aspects. Therefore, the OS process varies in different countries and contexts. Managers need to adjust their OS process when they are developing a global OS.

Against the backdrop of coordinated development and regional integration in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, China, the integration of Shenzhen and Dongguan has received increasing attention from both academia and the government. The cross-boundary area of the two cities has also shifted from being categorized as the development edge to becoming a key area, presenting more complex spatial and functional characteristics. This paper applies multi-source data to analyze the spatial characteristics and factors of influence in the Shenzhen–Dongguan cross-boundary region from the perspective of urban land use pattern evolution. The results showed that from 2008 to 2022, (1) the spatial structure presented a development trend from multi-core to axial, then to network, gradually breaking down the development barriers in the central region; (2) the function of regional land was transformed from a single type to a composite and mixed type, and the layout of commercial, public, green, and transportation land became more dispersed and balanced; (3) the cross-administrative boundaries of commercial land were exaggerated, and industrial land was widely transformed into composite industrial and commercial land, forming an integrated industrial belt; and (4) the overall increase in the mixing degree of land use functions indicated that the two regions were interconnected and integrated with each other, and the functional structure of the cross-boundary region was relatively more complete.

Drawing on empirical data, classic Waterfall, Agile, and DevOps models, and a review of advanced techniques, it proposes a unified team structure comprising a Product Owner, Business Analyst, UX/UI Designer, Tech Lead, Developers, QA Specialists, and Systems Analysts. It demonstrates how Agile workflows and CI/CD pipelines align with PMBOK-based PM processes, how incremental system architecture and requirements traceability ensure precise tracking from conception to deployment, and how automated testing and DevSecOps practices balance release speed with platform reliability. The purpose of this paper was to determine the influence of Internal Integration and operational performance in Kenya’s level five public hospitals, as well as the moderating effect of public procurement to the relationship. The study adopted causal and cross-sectional study design to examine the relationship between internal integration, operational performance using empirical data. One hundred sixty-four respondents drawn from the level five public hospitals participated in the research. These were selected from supply chain key personnel working in the supply by applying simple random sampling. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire that contained both open-ended and closed-ended questions and analysed. The results show a significant relationship between internal integration and operational performance (β1=0.286, p<0.05) with an R-square of 0.421, implying that 42.1% of the variation in the operational performance in level five public hospitals is attributed to changes in internal integration through responsiveness, integrated system, and real-time inventory management, online integration with internal customers, suppliers and warehouse, cross-functional teams, real-time logistics information, functional planning meetings, team building, and regular briefings. Public procurement was also found to significantly moderate the relationship between internal integration and operational performance (β2=0.378, p<0.05) of the level five public hospitals.The study recommends robust and effective internal integration by strengthening the facilities capabilities through information sharing, structuring of internal operations and process integration before they can engage in meaningful external integration.

Thus, having strong attention to manufacturing flexibility as a good means for improving the competitiveness of SMEs in the Korean manufacturing industry, this study investigates 1) the relationship between cross-functional integration (CFI), manufacturing flexibility, and customer satisfaction and 2) the role of a cross-functional team (CFT) made up of employees from different functional departments. From a large-scale sample of 504 SME data, this study empirically confirms that a higher level of integration between manufacturing and R&D tends to improve manufacturing flexibility, which ultimately increases customer satisfaction. Moreover, even when manufacturing-R&D integration is insufficient, forming a CFT secures a high level of manufacturing flexibility, which implies that a CFT officializes the need for the concentration and orchestration of a firm's diverse competence and helps to cultivate capabilities for enhancing the organizational performance.

They test the model using data collected on 788 new products developed and commercialized by Japanese firms in the past four years. The “best practices” identified in this study suggest that Japanese new product success is positively influenced by the level of cross-functional integration and information sharing, the firm's marketing and technical resources and skills, the proficiency of the new product development activities undertaken, and the nature of market conditions. Purpose This paper aims to improve marketing managers’ use of information from sales. The authors propose and empirically test the link between cross-functional trust and marketing’s use of information from sales, and whether this effect is contingent on marketing’s power within the firm. Design/methodology/approach Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 338 large-scale Hungarian firms. Structural equation modeling and bootstrap procedures were used to test the hypotheses. Findings The effect of cross-functional trust on marketing managers’ use of sales information is fully mediated by sales–marketing integration and marketing’s perception of information quality. However, the power of marketing within the firm moderates this mediating relationship. Research limitations/implications This paper provides empirical evidence concerning the mediating mechanisms of transferring cross-functional trust to marketing’s successful use of information from sales. The findings imply that cross-functional trust can improve marketing managers’ use of sales information of firms with powerful marketing units by facilitating integration, whereas it can improve the use of sales information of firms with low marketing power by improving marketing managers’ perception of information quality from sales. Originality/value This is the first study that models and empirically investigates marketing managers’ use of information collected by sales. The current study conceptually links and advances extant knowledge on the literatures on the sales–marketing interface and utilization of market information at the individual level and increases the understanding of how cross-functional trust contributes to information use under different contingencies of marketing power.

Kenyan food and beverage firms are vulnerable to SC disruptions and challenges, which are rooted in the lack of effective internal and external supply chains. As such, the disjointed nature of the food and beverage manufacturing subsector presents a significant challenge in relation to competitive advantage. Companies are enhancing competitiveness by strategically utilizing technology. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of technology integration on the competitive advantage of food and beverage manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study adopted a cross sectional survey. The target population was managers working along the supply chain from 270 food and beverage manufacturing firms in Kenya. Two-stage sampling design was employed. First stage, cluster random sampling was used to obtain 73 food & beverages manufacturing firms. Second stage, convenience sampling was used to select two participants from the 73 selected firms. Thus, a sample size of 146. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data using both the drop and pick and mailing methods. Secondary data was obtained through document analysis. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 28 to generate descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that technology integration had a positive significant linear relationship with competitive advantage. Additionally, the competitive advantage is anticipated to grow for every unit increase in technology integration. Thus, the study concludes that the parameters of technology integration (automatic identification technology, advanced planning systems, transaction processing systems, and data sharing systems) are crucial in enhancing a company's competitive advantage in the food and beverage industry. The study also revealed that food and beverage manufacturing firms in Kenya have not standardized or managed the exchange of knowledge between cross-functional departments, improved demand forecasting accuracy, or reduced bottlenecks between internal processes and external suppliers. The study recommends implementation of a KMS that facilitates cross-functional knowledge sharing and standardization. Prioritize features like document management, collaboration tools, and knowledge repositories tailored to the industry's specific needs.

Cross-functional integration (CFI) plays a crucial role in achieving the business objectives of any organization. This study assessed the impact of CFI on the organizational performance of a semiconductor company in the Philippines. This descriptive-quantitative research used an adapted questionnaire covering the three elements of CFI: collaboration, coordination, and communication. The data were gathered using Google Forms via email and Microsoft Teams from 87 employees on their supervisory levels of the subject-semiconductor company. The findings revealed that the subject-semiconductor company has a supportive culture for CFI. The present study has also provided empirical evidence that CFI is crucial to organizational performance. CFI practices in terms of the three elements have no significant differences as perceived by the respondents when grouped according to age, gender, and length of service. However, there exist significant differences in their perceptions of the practice of CFI in terms of coordination and communication when they are grouped by area/ department assignment. This suggests that the company can improve CFI by focusing on better coordination and communication across functions.

This paper proposes an enhanced Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based forecasting model explicitly designed for functional beverage sales prediction in cross-cultural markets. Traditional forecasting methods often struggle with capturing the complex interplay between cultural factors and sales patterns, leading to suboptimal prediction accuracy in diverse market environments. The proposed model incorporates innovative architectural modifications to the standard LSTM structure, integrating cultural-aware gates and specialized feature engineering techniques to capture market-specific characteristics. The research utilizes comprehensive sales data from six major markets across North America, Asia, and Europe from 2019 to 2023. The enhanced model demonstrates superior performance with a 28.4% improvement in prediction accuracy compared to traditional methods, achieving an average RMSE of 0.134 across all tested markets. The model's effectiveness is particularly evident in markets with high cultural diversity, where it achieved a 31.5% reduction in prediction error compared to conventional approaches. The research findings establish that cultural dimensions account for approximately 37.5% of sales variation across markets, highlighting the critical importance of cultural feature integration in sales forecasting. The practical implementation of the model resulted in a 23.7% reduction in inventory holding costs and improved resource allocation efficiency. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of cross-cultural market dynamics and practical applications in global business operations.

The data were collected via a questionnaire designed with a five-point Likert scale. The responses were analyzed using SmartPLS software 4.0. The results show that cross-function integration improves supply chain partnership, responsiveness, and resilience (β = 0.705, 0.382, 0.324; t-value = 25.177, 6.697, 5.783). Supply chain partnerships affect supply chain responsiveness, resilience, and competitive advantage (β = 0.327, 0.257, 0.249; t-value = 5.933, 4.536, 5.651). Moreover, supply chain responsiveness improves supply chain resilience and competitive advantage (β = 0.285, 0.106; t-value = 5.690, 2.099). Supply chain resilience improves competitive advantage (β = 0.435 and t-value = 8.987). SMEs can enhance their competitive advantage by integrating their internal cross-functional integration and adopting supply chain partnership, responsiveness, and resilience. The implementation of CTC’s Holistic Security Integration (CTCHSI) is supported by the author’s Applied Holistic Mathematical Model (AHMM) for CTC (AHMM4CTC) and his various research works on Holistic Security Integration (HSI), Business Process Management (BPM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI Services (AIS), Compute Services (CS), Mathematical Models, cross-functional transformations projects. The AHMM4CTC is based on cross-functional research on an authentic and proprietary mixed research method supported by his own version of an AI learning model, a search tree, combined with an internal heuristic algorithm. In this chapter, the focus is on CTC-HSI’s integration concepts, requirements, services, data management, and corresponding transformation security strategies. The proposed AHMM4CTC-based CTC-HSI is a concept for secured environments, which use real-life cases of a transformation project, which needs scalable and secured Cloud Platform’s (CP) infrastructure and services layer, that are supported by the alignment of CP services, standards, enterprise architecture paradigm, and security development strategies. In a CP-based transformation project, the author recommends integrating a Private CP (PCP); which can use commercial CPs like the Google CP (GCP). The GCP was chosen as a sample CP, but there is a need to define a standardized security architecture and concept/procedures so that the organization builds its own CTC-HSI-based PCP and has to avoid locked-in commercial products.

Successful capital project execution of any size is a challenging endeavour. Performance gaps in on-time and on-budget delivery are often due to the inability to effectively integrate cross-functional work teams. Faced with delivering one of the largest capital projects in its portfolio, the leadership team of a large O&G asked: how do we best integrate 16 functional teams required to deliver this project? How do we get the right forums with the right audience as we are all busy? How do we build a culture of trust and performance transparency? In response, the team developed the integrated boardwalk approach as the way to run their business. The approach was for each of the 16 functional groups to build individual dashboards based on an agreed template of performance metrics. The dashboards are permanently visible performance boards in each work area. Senior leaders and leads would walk the performance boards spending no more than 15–20 mins at each. The intention is to provide an open and safe space for leads to talk about all aspect of their business as it relates to project readiness. Senior leaders drive the desired performance behaviours, where the functional leads highlight risks and specific barriers that leadership can act on and eliminate. The boardwalks have created a cultural change in the organisation, specifically: people have the right focused forums to talk about their business with the right audience using the right data; and, leaders have the transparency required to ask the right probing questions, recognise data-driven progress.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of Cross-Functional Awareness (CFA) and to question how firm size influences the impact of ERP implementation strategies on CFA. Specifically, the paper questions whether size moderates the capability of the firm to achieve CFA. Design/methodology/approach – The authors developed and empirically tested a conceptual framework using the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach. This study gathered data from a sample of 45 French SMEs and 55 French large firms. Findings – The results show that ERP implementation strategies (flexibility, organizational vision, Business Process Re-Engineering, speed of implementation, and focus on core modules) have a direct positive relationship and, in large firms, an indirect relationship (via data quality improvement) with the emergence of CFA. The study also suggests that firm size moderates the resulting emergence of ERP-enabled CFA. The findings will help researchers understand the factors associated with ERP implementation and use that promote or inhibit successful use of ERP systems. Research limitations/implications – Similar to many published ERP surveys, the sample size is small. In addition, the authors examined CFA in the survey from the perspective of a single respondent per firm. Finally, there may be a cultural limitation linked to the respondents all being French firms. Practical implications – The findings will promote a better understanding of the concept of CFA and its benefits amongst managers, leading to increased productivity and efficiency with ERP. In particular, they will help practitioners identify and manage the right factors during ERP implementations. Originality/value – In the expanding world of Enterprise System research, this paper is significant in that it studies the effect of ERP implementation on CFA rather than investigating the factors affecting ERP implementation or the outcomes of ERP implementations. To the best of the knowledge, this is one of the few papers that theoretically articulates and empirically explores the concept of CFA, and tests the relationship between implementation strategy factors and CFA, including the moderating role of size in the context of ERP. The contribution shows that the firm size effect should be examined at the level of SMEs and larger firms separately, rather than at an overall level.

Purpose Design-for-variety (DFV) practices aim to help manufacturers to manage and mitigate the negative impact of product variety on operational performance. Theory suggests that designing products according to DFV practices increases operational performance by allowing more efficient processing of products, capitalizing on commonalities and by supporting cross-functional and cross-boundary coordination through simplifying product designs. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the latter proposition, and especially the mediating role of internal, supplier and customer integration in the relationship between DFV and operational performance. Design/methodology/approach Data collected in 2014 among 702 manufacturers from 22 countries as part of the 6th International Manufacturing Strategy Survey are analyzed through mediated regression analysis using SPSS 25, AMOS and PROCESS v3.1 software. Findings DFV affects cost/speed, quality, delivery, flexibility and service performance positively. Except for the role of customer integration in the DFV-cost/speed relationship, internal, supplier and customer integration partially mediate the relationship between DFV and operational performance. Practical implications In addition to allowing a more efficient processing of products, the positive effect of DFV on performance is also explained by the fact that DFV practices support cross-functional and supply chain integration. These practices allow manufacturers to create a set of design rules easily understood and communicated within and across organizational boundaries. Originality/value While previous research tends to consider one DFV practice and limited sets of integration mechanisms and performance dimensions, this paper consolidates the most common DFV practices into one construct and encompasses the three forms of integration and six performance dimensions dominating the DFV literature.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membranous structures derived from the endosomal system or generated by plasma membrane shedding. Due to their composition of DNA, RNA, proteins, and lipids, EVs have garnered a lot of attention as an essential mechanism of cell-to-cell communication, with various implications in physiological and pathological processes. EVs are not only a highly heterogeneous population by means of size and biogenesis, but they are also a source of diverse, functionally rich biomolecules. Recent advances in high-throughput processing of biological samples have facilitated the development of databases comprised of characteristic genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic profiles for EV cargo. Despite the in-depth approach used to map functional molecules in EV-mediated cellular cross-talk, few integrative methods have been applied to analyze the molecular interplay in these targeted delivery systems. New perspectives arise from the field of systems biology, where accounting for heterogeneity may lead to finding patterns in an apparently random pool of data. In this review, we map the biological and methodological causes of heterogeneity in EV multi-omics data and present current applications or possible statistical methods for integrating such data while keeping track of the current bottlenecks in the field.

This study aimed to explore the dynamics and implications of cross-functional collaborations in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly in the context of global health crises and the unique challenges faced by the nation. Utilizing a systematic approach, data were extracted from selected sources using a structured form, capturing study objectives, methodology, key findings, and implications specific to Nigeria’s healthcare landscape. The extracted data underwent thematic analysis, identifying patterns and themes that provide a nuanced understanding of healthcare collaborations in Nigeria. The findings underscore the transformative power of cross-functional collaborations, especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where diverse disciplines converged towards a shared objective. The study also highlighted the critical role of patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) in Nigeria’s healthcare provision, emphasizing the need for their continuous training and regulation. Collaborative initiatives, such as responses to disease outbreaks and the push for Universal Health Coverage (UHC), were identified as pivotal strategies to address the multifaceted challenges facing Nigeria’s health system. In conclusion, cross-functional collaborations in Nigeria’s healthcare sector present a promising avenue to address systemic challenges, drive innovation, and improve patient outcomes. Recommendations include strengthening regulatory frameworks, prioritizing technological integration, enhancing interdisciplinary training, and addressing systemic barriers to effective collaboration.

Here we describe the design and implementation of a novel data management platform for an academic cancer center which meets the needs of multiple stakeholders. A small, cross-functional technical team identified key challenges to creating a broad data management and access software solution: lowering the technical skill floor, reducing cost, enhancing user autonomy, optimizing data governance, and reimagining technical team structures in academia. The Hyperion data management platform was designed to meet these challenges in addition to usual considerations of data quality, security, access, stability, and scalability. Implemented between May 2019 and December 2020 at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, Hyperion includes a sophisticated custom validation and interface engine to process data from multiple sources, storing it in a database. Graphical user interfaces and custom wizards permit users to directly interact with data across operational, clinical, research, and administrative contexts. The use of multi-threaded processing, open-source programming languages, and automated system tasks (normally requiring technical expertise) minimizes costs. An integrated ticketing system and active stakeholder committee support data governance and project management. A co-directed, cross-functional team with flattened hierarchy and integration of industry software management practices enhances problem solving and responsiveness to user needs. Access to validated, organized, and current data is critical to the functioning of multiple domains in medicine. Although there are downsides to developing in-house customized software, we describe a successful implementation of custom data management software in an academic cancer center.

Purpose Supply chain flexibility has been acknowledged as a necessity in the context of constantly changing operational and service requirements in the global marketplace. However, limited research has focused on analyzing and empirically testing the dynamics of achieving enhanced flexibility performance. Drawing upon the knowledge-based view of the firm, the purpose of this paper is to address this research gap by introducing supply chain learning (SCL) and integration as key factors in the process. Design/methodology/approach Survey data were collected in India. Structural equation modeling technique was used as the main analysis method to test the proposed conceptual model on SCL, integration, and flexibility performance. Findings Research findings indicate that the supply chain integration construct (in its internal and external dimensions) mediates the proposed SCL-flexibility performance relationship. The analysis also confirms the positive relationship between cross-functional integration and inter-firm integration. Research limitations/implications Focusing on only one country may limit the generalizability of the findings. Also, cross-sectional data collection may not be the ideal approach for evaluating the impacts of SCL. Therefore, future research with longitudinal data and in different contexts is warranted to validate the research results of this study. Originality/value The proposed conceptual model adds to the limited existing knowledge body of SCL and links SCL, integration, and flexibility performance. It also provides a new venue for future research in this area.
