Abstract:

According to the Great Commission, the clear call of Christian leaders is to make disciples (Matt. 28:16-20). Many key Christian leaders and thinkers cite personal Bible reading as one of the key components to the life of a growing disciple. Unfortunately, research shows that many American Christians are not actively reading the Bible outside of Sunday morning services (Stetzer, 2012). Thus, a mixed-methods study was done of a group of infrequent Bible readers from Crossway Church to assess the impact of the SOAP method of Bible reading on their spiritual lives. The group committed to reading one chapter of the Bible using the SOAP method five days a week for nine weeks. Qualitative interviews were conducted after the nine weeks, and the results of the participants' pre- and post-group Transformational Discipleship Assessment scores were analyzed to determine the kind of impact consistent Bible reading had on their lives. The researcher found significant spiritual growth in the lives of those who participated. Implications for the researcher's church as well as the local church at large are articulated in this dissertation.

Cortese, Simone. "Selector devices/architectures for ReRAM crossbar arrays." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/418465/.

Full text
Abstract:
Resistive Random Access Memories (ReRAMs) are amongst the most promising next generation memory technologies, due to their small feature size, low power consumption and capacity to be integrated in 3D ehen arranged in crossbar array. ReRAMs harvest the potential of the resistive switching phenomenon that allows to reversibly change their internal resistive state, from High to Low. This aspect, however, is also a problem when ReRAM cells are tesserated in crossbar array configuration: elements that are programmed in their low resistive state can create low resistance sneak paths in the array fabric making the readout operations strenuous. This challenge is usually mitigated by the use of selector devices. A selector must be able to suppress the currents owing in the sneak paths and, at the same time, allow for ReRAM reliable operations. In this work, the sneak current problem is introduced and defined. Several solutions that have been studied in literature are presented and discussed, creating a solid background for the development of this work. Upon this strong basis, different selector devices technologies were developed. Ni/TiO2/Ni selector devices were first designed, studied and benchmarked against other technologies showing improved performances in term of Voltage Margin without any adverse effect on the maximum current supplied. As this device stack has been designed to have a similar metal-insulator-metal architecture to ReRAM devices, the two were monolithically integrated and characterized. The possibility to exploit volatile resistive switching was also introduced and discussed thoroughly, starting from a TiO2/NiO stack exhibiting a promising threshold behaviour for selectorsoperations, fostering iterests of the community on this approach. The limitations of this approach were studied via SPICE simulations, setting the framework and requirements for their implementation in crossbars: through this ongoing work, it was realised that the selector technologies should not be evaluated in isolation from ReRAM, which has led to contributions towards forming-free ReRAM devices. This research stream employed a TiO2/AlOy bi-layer stack devices able to perform resisting switching with a 2-orders of magnitude ON/OFF ratio and low cycle-to-cycle variability without requiring electroforming: this behaviour is presented and discussed. Herein, overall this work has oered contributions towards reliable ReRAM/selector technologies operations for crossbar arrays in terms of both selector technology, improving existing approach and exploring new ones, and ReRAMs, providing the community with a promising path towards forming free operations.

Abstract:
It can be difficult to guide yourself across a crosswalk when your visual capabilities are limited, which can be an everyday issue for someone with impaired vision. This paper aims to alleviate that issue for zebra stripe crosswalks by proposing an algorithm that incorporates multiple properties of zebra stripe crosswalks with a neural network to assist in quickly and accurately identifying a crosswalk in video and pictures taken from a smartphone camera. This method improves the accuracy of zebra crosswalk detection in images. In a large dataset, it correctly identified 76.5% of zebra crosswalks, while reducing the false discovery rate (q-value) from 20% without using neural networks to 2.21% using this neural network method. Only 2.04% of non-crosswalk images as crosswalks using the neural network method.

Abstract:
The performance gaps in nowadays memory hierarchy on the first hand between processor and main memory, on the other hand between main memory and storage have become a bottleneck for system performances. Due to these limitations, many emerging memories have been proposed as alternative solutions to fill out such concerns. The emerging non-volatile resistive random-access memories (RRAM) are considered as strong candidates for storage class memory (SCM), embedded nonvolatile memories (eNVM), enhanced solid-state disks, and neuromorphic computing. However, reliability challenges such as RRAM thermal stability and resistance variability are still under improvement processes. In addition, to achieve high integration densities the RRAM needs two terminal selector devices in one-selector one-resistor (1S1R) serial cell. The BEOL selector device enables suppression of the parasitic leakage paths, which hinder memory array operation in crossbar and vertical 3D architectures. In this PhD, our main focus is to address and treat the above challenges. Here, the work can be divided into two main parts: i) the investigation of the reliability of HfO2 based RRAM cells and ii) the characterization of the basis memory operations and performances of HfO2 based RRAM cells co-integrated with two different back end of line (BEOL) selector technologies. For the reliability part, we have investigated the effects of aluminum (Al) doping on data retention of HfO2 based RRAM cells. Single and double layer devices with different aluminum concentration were fabricated and tested. From macroscopic electrical characteristics, like time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) and ramped voltage forming, microscopic properties of the materials such as the activation energy to break a bond at zero field and the dipole moment of the bond were extracted. These parameters have been used to shed new light on the mechanisms governing the forming process by means of device level simulations. Second, we have addressed the radiation immunity of HfO2 based RRAM for possible space applications as well. Our RRAM devices were exposed to 266 MeV Iodine heavy ions energy. Pre- and post-exposure analysis were carried out on the memory states and the programming voltages to study the effects of the irradiation on the memory characteristics. Throughout this work, we have performed physics based simulations to understand the dynamics of the forming process as well as the physical mechanisms involved during the memory operations. For the access devices part, we have evaluated two different types of selectors. For accurate reading and low power writing a strong selectivity in the current/voltage characteristics is required. In the first studied device, the selectivity is introduced by adding an oxide tunnel barrier. The main advantage of this strategy is that it is easy to integrate, however it suffers of low selectivity (~10) and low programming current. Second, an OTS based selector co-integrated with HfO2 based RRAM was fully characterized. OTS selector provides higher selectivity compared to the oxide tunnel barrier with the possibilities to strongly increase this selectivity by material engineering. Over 106 read cycles have been achieved on our 1S1R devices using an innovative read strategy that we have suggested to prevent disruptive read and to reduce the power consumption

Doran, Conrad J. "The mechanical behaviour of crossply laminates with SiC whisker additions." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1993. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843002/.

Abstract:
A technique is developed whereby Silicon Carbide whiskers may be incorporated uniformly into epoxy resin using an ethanol transport medium. Volume fractions up to 10% are achieved. The mechanical properties of the whisker loaded resin are studied using uniaxial tensile coupons and compact tension test methods. With increasing fraction of whisker, the tensile modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness are all found to increase significantly. A method for producing hybrid E-glass fibre/epoxy resin/SiC whisker crossply laminates is developed from an existing frame winding technique. Scanning electron microscopy of polished sections of the resultant laminates confirm that an reasonable distribution of the whisker in the matrix is achieved. Laminates containing 0%, 2% 5% and 10% matrix volume fraction of SiC whisker are fabricated. Tensile coupons taken from the laminates were tested under quasi-static and tension-tension fatigue loading conditions. Under both static and fatigue loading, the residual stiffness and accumulation of cracks in the transverse ply are monitored. It is shown that the presence of whisker delays the onset of matrix cracking and the subsequent multiplication of transverse ply cracks under both static loading and fatigue loading conditions. A model to describe the transverse ply crack spacing-applied stress relationship for each laminate type under static loading conditions is developed. The model is based on a combination of a shear-lag stress analysis with a two parameter Weibull statistical description of the transverse ply strength variation. A computer simulation is developed which simulates the propagation of transverse ply cracks across the width of a laminate based on a fracture mechanics analysis. Using a Paris law expression to describe the growth of individual cracks modified to allow for crack interaction the model predicts the variation in residual stiffness with increasing fatigue cycling.

Abstract:
Memristor-based nano-crossbar computing is a revolutionary computing paradigm that does away with the traditional Von Neumann architectural separation of memory and computation units. The computation of Boolean formulas using memristor circuits has been a subject of several recent investigations. Crossbar computing, in general, has also been a topic of active interest, but sneak paths have posed a hurdle in the design of pervasive general-purpose crossbar computing paradigms. In this paper, we demonstrate that sneak paths in nano-crossbar computing can be exploited to design a Boolean-formula evaluation strategy. We demonstrate our approach on a simple Boolean formula and a 1-bit addition circuit. We also conjecture that our nano-crossbar design will be an effective approach for synthesizing high-performance customized arithmetic and logic circuits.
B.S.
Bachelors
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Engineering and Computer Science

Abstract:
Nowadays, researchers are trying to shrink the memory cell in order to increase the capacity of the memory system and reduce the hardware costs. In recent years, there has been a revolution in electronics by using fundamentals of physics to build a new memory for computer application in order to increase the capacity and decrease the power consumption. Increasing the capacity of the memory causes a growth in the chip area. From 1971 to 2012 semiconductor manufacturing process improved from 6µm to 22 µm. In May 2008, S.Williams stated that "it is time to stop shrinking". In his paper, he declared that the process of shrinking memory element has recently become very slow and it is time to use another alternative in order to create memory elements [9]. In this project, we present a new design of a memory array using the new element named Memristor [3]. Memristor is a two-terminal passive electrical element that relates the charge and magnetic flux to each other. The device remained unknown since 1971 when it was discovered by Chua and introduced as the fourth fundamental passive element like capacitor, inductor and resistor [3]. Memristor has a dynamic resistance and it can retain its previous value even after disconnecting the power supply. Due to this interesting behavior of the Memristor, it can be a good replacement for all of the Non-Volatile Memories (NVMs) in the near future. Combination of this newly introduced element with the nanowire crossbar architecture would be a great structure which is called Crossbar Memristor. Some frameworks have recently been introduced in literature that utilized Memristor crossbar array, but there are many challenges to implement the Memristor crossbar array due to fabrication and device limitations. In this work, we proposed a simple design of Memristor crossbar array architecture which uses input feedback in order to preserve its data after each read operation

Abstract:
With increasing energy costs as well as rampant congestion in major U.S. cities, the popularity of walk and bike mode choices have increased in recent years. Thus, the obtainment of a comprehensive knowledge of pedestrian and bicyclist behaviors is of great importance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 11.1%#37; of pedestrian fatalities and 18.5%#37; of bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. occurred in Florida in 2011, which accounts for just 6.1%#37; of the nation's population. Additionally, intersections are hotspots for vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, which is confirmed by the Federal Highway Administration's estimate that nearly one in five pedestrian fatalities occur at intersections in the U.S. Since both signalized and non-signalized intersections are conflict points for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists, it is essential that traffic control methods ensure that safety is not compromised. To examine the safety effects of different walk modes at signalized intersections, four locations in the Tampa Bay area were chosen. Two of the locations operate with Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall and the other two operate without Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall. A total of 26 hours of data were collected in early 2013 at the four study sites, which yielded 202 pedestrian and bicyclist observations. Upon modeling behaviors using a multinomial Logit model, the presence of Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall on minor street pedestrian phases, which operate concurrently with major street vehicle phases, was found to encourage higher pedestrian and bicyclist compliance rates than their absence. Additionally, the presence or absence of the combination of both Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall was found to be the most influential variable examined.

Collins, Stephen Frank. "James Crossley : publisher, critic, collector and bibliographer: a Manchester man of letters." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2000. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.341032.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the life and work of James Crossley, this thesis explores the important and often neglected significance of middle-class power and influence in the nineteenthcentury industrial city of Manchester. Born in the first year of the century, Crossley can be considered a paradigm of one section of a class divided along political and sectarian lines. He was a lawyer by profession, and a 'Church and State' Tory by inclination. After successive defeats, political ambitions gave way to antiquarian and especially literary interests, which he pursued in common with an influential network of other like-minded individuals. It is principally in this area that he made a significant contribution to the cultural maturation of the burgeoning city, and achieved the highest recognition during his lifetime. The principal topics investigated in successive chapters, through manuscript and printed sources, are: 1) Education and early literary interests. 2) The beginnings of a lifelong friendship with William Harrison Ainsworth, many of whose novels depended on source material provided by Crossley. Early literary journalism in Blackwood's Magazine and the Retrospective Review. 3) Legal training, the formation of the Manchester Law Association. 4) Political affairs, particularly in opposition to the Charter of Incorporation. 5) Dickens's visits, the expansion of Manchester's cultural infrastructure, including the Athenaeum Club 6) The growth and importance of publishing societies in the nineteenth century. Crossley's role in shaping and maintaining the Chetham Society. 7) The founding of the Manchester Free Public Library, Crossley's part in the selection and purchase of the stock, and the public recognition of this work. 8) The importance of the private collector in nineteenth-century literary research. Crossley's collection (particularly of the works of Daniel Defoe), and his influence on the work of contemporary bibliographers. 9) The Manchester man of letters, his accomplishments and status. It was concluded from this study that the life and achievements of James Crossley provide a valuable insight into the cultural development of Manchester in the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) has multiple processors in a single chip. In this work, we propose the architecture of an interconnection network based on the crossbar topology, with shared memory. In this type of implementation each processor executes its application stored in its own memory module. Through the network, all processors have complete access to their own memory modules simultaneously allowing each application to run concurrently. Moreover, a processor can access other memory modules, whenever it needs to retrieve data generated by another processor. The proposed architecture is modelled in VHDL and its performance is analysed by the execution of a parallel aplication, in comparison to its sequencial one. The chosen application consists of optimizing some objetive functions by using the Particle Swarm Optimization method. In this method, particles of a swarm are distributed among the processors and, at the end of each iteration, a processor accesses the memory module of another one in order to obtain the best position found in the swarm. The communication between processors is based on three strategies: ring, neighbourhood and broadcast. This application was chosen due to its computational intensive characteristic and, therefore, a strong candidate for parallelization.

Kindred, Thomas. "Checkerboard plumbings." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6160.

Full text
Abstract:
Knots and links $L\subset S^3$ carry a wealth of data. Spanning surfaces $F$ (1- or 2-sided), $\partial F=L$, especially {\bf checkerboard} surfaces from link diagrams $D\subset S^2$, help to mine this data. This text explores the structure of these surfaces, with a focus on a gluing operation called {\bf plumbing}, or {\it Murasugi sum}. First, naive classification questions provide natural and accessible motivation for the geometric and algebraic notions of essentiality (incompressibility with $\partial$-incompressibility and $\pi_1$-injectivity, respectively). This opening narrative also scaffolds a system of hyperlinks to the usual background information, which lies out of the way in appendices and glossaries. We then extend both notions of essentiality to define geometric and algebraic {\it degrees} of essentiality, $\underset{\hookrightarrow}{\text{ess}}(F)$ and $\text{ess}(F)$. For the latter, cutting $S^3$ along $F$ and letting $\mathcal{X}$ denote the set of compressing disks for $\partial (S^3\backslash\backslash F)$ in $S^3\backslash\backslash F$, $\text{ess}(F):=\min_{X\in\mathcal{X}}|\partial X\cap L|$. Extending results of Gabai and Ozawa, we prove that plumbing respects degrees of algebraic essentiality, $\text{ess}(F_1*F_2)\geq\min_{i=1,2}\text{ess}(F_i)$, provided $F_1,F_2$ are essential. We also show by example that plumbing does not respect the condition of geometric essentiality. We ask which surfaces de-plumb uniquely. We show that, in general, essentiality is necessary but insufficient, and we give various sufficient conditions. We consider Ozawa's notion of representativity $r(F,L)$, which is defined similarly to $\text{ess}(F)$, except that $F$ is a closed surface in $S^3$ that contains $L$, rather than a surface whose boundary equals $L$. We use Menasco's crossing bubbles to describe a sort of thin position for such a closed surface, relative to a given link diagram, and we prove in the case of alternating links that $r(F,L)\leq2$. (The contents of Chapter 4, under the title Alternating links have representativity 2, are first published in Algebraic \& Geometric Topology in 2018, published by Mathematical Sciences Publishers.) We then adapt these arguments to the context of spanning surfaces, obtaining a simpler proof of a useful crossing band lemma, as well as a foundation for future attempts to better classify the spanning surfaces for a given alternating link. We adapt the operation of plumbing to the context of Khovanov homology. We prove that every homogeneously adequate Kauffman state has enhancements $X^\pm$ in distinct $j$-gradings whose traces (which we define) represent nonzero Khovanov homology classes over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and that this is also true over $\mathbb{Z}$ when all $A$-blocks' state surfaces are two-sided. A direct proof constructs $X^\pm$ explicitly. An alternate proof, reflecting the theorem's geometric motivation, applies our adapted plumbing operation. Finally, we describe an interpretation of Khovanov homology in terms of decorated cell decompositions of abstract, nonorientable surfaces, featuring properly embedded (1+1)-dimensional nonorientable cobordisms in (2+1)-dimensional nonorientable cobordisms. This formulation contains a planarity condition; removing this condition leads to Khovanov homology for virtual link diagrams.

Abstract:
The main motivation of this work is to investigate techniques to reduce the power consumption inside a network element. It is enough to consider the high energy demand associated to the telecommunication networks field. As practical consequence the power consumption has become a relevant parameter and it represents a critical constraint for the network designers looking both the whole network infrastructure and the network elements like switches, routers and servers. The PhD has been focused mainly on two research areas of interest, the first one was the power consumption inside the switching fabric of an high speed router. The target was to analyze the effect of the dynamic power inside a switching fabric, to evaluate a set of optimization strategies in order to minimize the power consumption and to achieve the best trade-off between power, high performances and packet delays; the crossbar was used as reference switching architecture for this study. Looking at the consumption side, generally speaking, it is possible to define two families of switching fabrics: ˆ1)Bit-rate independent switching fabric, in which the consumption does not depend on the number of transported bits; this family is typical of optical switching fabrics ˆ2)Bit-rate dependent switching fabric, where the total consumption is proportional to the data transmission bit-rate, this family is typical of electronic switching fabrics The second research activity was carried at the Alcatel-Lucent Bell Laboratories, based in New Jersey (USA) and over a period of 9 months. The study of the power consumption across several network elements that are commercially available for the "corporate" market. We started from a set of collected larger number of power measurements over these network elements and thanks to them we were able to develop a linear mathematical model to describe the power consumption of a generic network element.

Bell, Alan Nigel. "The male novelist and the 'woman question' George Meredith's presentation of his Heroines in The Egoist (1879) and Diana of the Crossways (1885)." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002245.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on four early works, then three from his middle period and three from the 1890s, this dissertation explores Meredith’s role as a novelist in the unfolding of a social and literary paradox, namely, that with the death of George Eliot in 1880, the dominant writers of fiction were male, and this remained the case until the advent of Virginia Woolf, while at the same time the woman’s movement for emancipation in all spheres of life—domestic, commercial, professional and political—was gathering in strength and conviction. None of the late nineteenth-century male novelists—James, Hardy, Moore and Gissing, as well as Meredith—was ideologically committed to the feminist cause; in fact the very term ‘feminist’ did not begin to become current in England until the mid-1890s. But they were all interested in one aspect or another of the ‘Woman Question’, even if James was ambivalent about female emancipation, and Gissing, on the whole, was somewhat hostile. Of all these novelists, it was Meredith whose work, especially in its last two decades, most copiously reveals a profound sympathy for women and their struggles to realize their desires and ambitions, both inside and outside the home, in a patriarchal world. The dissertation therefore concentrates on his presentation of his heroines in their relationships with the men who, in one way or another, dominate them, and with whom they must negotiate, within the social and sexual conventions of the time, a modus vivendi—a procedure that will entail, especially in the later work, some transgression of those conventions. Chapter 1 sketches more than two centuries of development in female consciousness of severe social disadvantage, from literary observations in the mid-seventeenth century to the intensifying of political representations in the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, and the rise of the woman’s movement in the course of the Victorian century. The chapter includes an account of the impact on Meredith of John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women (1869), and an examination of some of his female friendships by way of illuminating the experiential component of his insights into the ‘Woman Question’ as reflected in his fiction and letters. His unhappy first marriage is reserved for consideration in Chapter 2, as background to the discussion of The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859). This early novel, Meredith’s first in the realist mode, is widely accepted as being of high quality, and is given extended treatment, together with briefer accounts of three other early works, The Shaving of Shagpat (1855), Evan Harrington (1861), and Rhoda Fleming (1865), and one from Meredith’s middle period, Beauchamp’s Career (1876). Two more novels of this period, The Egoist (1879) and Diana of the Crossways (1885), are generally considered to be among his best works, and their heroines are given chapters to themselves (3 and 4). Chapter 5 provides further contextualization for the changing socio-political circumstances of the 1880s and 1890s, with particular reference to that heightening of feminist consciousness represented by the short-lived ‘New Woman’ phenomenon, to which Diana of the Crossways had been considered by some to be a contribution. Brief discussion of some other ‘New Woman’ novels of the 80s and 90s follows, giving literary context to the heroines of Meredith’s three late candidates in the genre, One of Our Conquerors (1891), Lord Ormont and His Aminta (1894), and The Amazing Marriage (1895). The dissertation concludes with a glance at Meredith’s influence on a few early twentieth-century novelists.

While conventional non-volatiles memories, such as floating gate Flash memories, are becoming more and more difficult and costly to integrate and suffer of reduced performances and reliability, emerging resistive switching memories (RRAM), such as OxRAM, CBRAM, MRAM or PCM, are seen in the scientific community as a good way for tomorrow’s high-density memories. However, standard RRAM architectures (such as 1 Transistor-1 RRAM) are not competitive with flash technology in terms of density. Thereby, this thesis proposes to explore the opportunities opened by transistor-less RRAM architectures: Crosspoint and Vertical RRAM (VRRAM) architectures.First, the positioning of Crosspoint and VRRAM architectures in the memory hierarchy is studied. New constraints such as the sneakpath currents, the voltage drop through the metal lines or the periphery area overhead are identified and modeled. Abstract:
This study utilizes an alignment-crosswalk of metro-Los Angeles public K-12 school districts’ teacher evaluation items and the California Teacher Performance Expectations to determine which local school district evaluation items do not align with pre-service preparation course work standards, and which pre-service preparation course work standards are not assessed by local school districts. Findings initially indicated that many districts utilize the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, a set of standards defined by the same California regulatory body which responsible for developing and authorizing the California Teacher Performance Expectations. Initial findings also included school district evaluations not aligned to the California Standards for the Teaching Profession which were also crosswalked with the Teacher Performance Expectations to determine their alignment and non-coverage areas. Content analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis were performed to determine what gaps exist between preservice teachers’ preparation standards and in-service early-career evaluation standards.

Abstract:
This thesis involves modeling, design, Hardware Description Language (HDL) design capture, synthesis, implementation and HDL virtual prototype simulation validation of an interconnect network for a Hybrid Data/Command Driven Computer Architecture (HDCA) system. The HDCA is a single-chip shared memory multiprocessor architecture system. Various candidate processor-memory interconnect topologies that may meet the requirements of the HDCA system are studied and evaluated related to utilization within the HDCA system. It is determined that the Crossbar network topology best meets the HDCA system requirements and it is therefore used as the processormemory interconnect network of the HDCA system. The design capture, synthesis, implementation and HDL simulation is done in VHDL using XILINX ISE 6.2.3i and ModelSim 5.7g CAD softwares. The design is validated by individually testing against some possible test cases and then integrated into the HDCA system and validated against two different applications. The inclusion of crossbar switch in the HDCA architecture involved major modifications to the HDCA system and some minor changes in the design of the switch. Virtual Prototype testing of the HDCA executing applications when utilizing crossbar interconnect revealed proper functioning of the interconnect and HDCA. Inclusion of the interconnect into the HDCA now allows it to implement dynamic node level reconfigurability and multiple forking functionality.

Full text
Abstract:
An ambitious long-term goal of medicine is to make analyses and deliver drugs selectively at cell level. In particular such "ideal" drugs should be able to travel through the vasculature, reach the intended target at full concentration, and there act selectively on diseased cells and tissues only, without creating undesired side effects. The state of the art in pursuing this goal is represented by \emph{nanoparticles} \cite{Ferrari2010}, which can be roughly defined as the combination of a drug molecule with a suitable vector of nanoscale dimensions. One of the main limitations of nanoparticles is that they do not have an onboard control system. Their ``program'' has to be defined in the drug design phase. A different program means the development of a new nanoparticle. Moreover the lack of onboard control means also that the complexity of the actions to be performed by nanoparticles is quite restricted. The basic idea sustaining this goal is inspired by the immune system. That the immune system is a fantastic machine for surveilling and fighting against exogenous diseases is too well known to deserve discussion. However, it is not perfect. A drawback of the immune system system is the poor recognition of endogenous pathological cells like those responsible for cancer or self-immune diseases. In this context it should be interesting to develop artificial devices (\emph{nanobots}) working as blood white cells but addressed to the recognition and eventually the destruction of endogenous pathological states. A nanobot \cite{Requicha2003} can be defined as any artificial machine with overall size of the order of a few microns or less ($\simeq$ red cells), constituted by nanoscopic components with individual dimensions in the interval $1-10^2$ nm, and able to perform sophisticated functions like navigation, cell recognition, data collection and transmission. To the best of my knowledge no attempt toward the definition of an auxiliary immune system is however known. Of course, this goal is extremely ambitious and is expected to require decades. Nonetheless, sketching a scenario is not a mere speculation, but rather is useful to identify the nature of problems posed by the development of nanobots for real applications. One of the possible reasons for the ineffectiveness of the immune system in detecting malignant cells is that the common features associated with cancer genesis and growth (hyperthermia, hypoxia and acidification) are the same as those characteristic of muscle under physical exercise. My program is thus that of \emph{endowing the immune system with an artificial surveillance system devoted to detecting the simultaneous occurrence of hyperthermia, hypoxia and excessive acidity due to localized cancerous states without confusing it with the similar conditions produced under physiological conditions}. Considering the diagnosis of cancer as a crime detection, the search of the perpetrator is not addressed to the identification of the smoking gun but rather to a frame evidence resulting from the simultaneous occurrence of three events (hyperthermia, hypoxia and excessive acidity) and their persistence in time. The aim of this thesis is twofold. On one side I want to describe an architecture of nanobots which is not only able to embed sophisticated functions, but also suitable for being manufactured by processes compatible with today and likely tomorrow semiconductor industries. On the other side, I want also to analyze and develop the algorithms needed for successfully tackling the nanobot tasks. In particular, since the nanobots would be devices with very limited computational resources and the interaction between them could only happen locally, the algorithms to control them could be based on swarm intelligence; i.e. it could be inspired by the collective behavior of social-insect colonies and other animal societies.

The objective is to demonstrate, through the analysis of the verbal-visual discourse of the performances of crossplayers when interpreting male characters, that the figures of the hero and the villain in works of female authors, have power and show that for crossplayers to assume the representation of such figures, the conditio sine qua non is the silencing of the feminine. The corpus of analysis consists of two performances presented by Brazilian crossplayers: the first concerns a clipping from the manga Clover authored by the CLAMP group (composed entirely of women) focusing on the hero Kazuhiko Fay Ryu, and the second an excerpt from the manga Inuyasha, authored by Rumiko Takahashi, aiming at the villain, Sesshoumaru. The work is divided into four chapters. The first discusses concepts of Japanese pop culture, focusing on the manga (comic books). The second presents the world of cosplay practice (activity that involves representing characters derived from popular media, including the manga) and crossplay (segment in which cosplay practitioners interpret characters of the opposite sex). The third is based on the theoretical framework, in which I elaborate on a literature review of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Visual Grammar, gender studies, fundamentals of Takarazuka Theater (theater company composed entirely of women) and studies on performance. The fourth chapter includes: a) the transformation of crossplayers described from supplementary materials available in a video and tutorials that illustrate the preceding steps of stage performance; b) analysis methodology, based on the model of the pentad of Burke (1973), composed of agent, act, scene, agency and proposal, to which selected categories among the other theoretical axes are added; c) the analysis of the two performances, available in DVD. In order to broaden the informative horizon tangent to the practice of performances resulting from intertextual movements with manga I include an attachment with the testimony of Brazilian crossplayers and an appendix with an account of my own experience in cos/crossplay. Along with the test results, this material is also considered in the search for an answer to the question that imposes itself from the title of the work: "Silence or subversion? The representation of the social role of women in the performative discourse of manga crossplayers
Abstract:
The recent development of new non-volatile memory technologies based on the memristor concept has triggered many research efforts to explore their potential usage in different application domains. The distinctive features of memristive devices and their suitability for CMOS integration are expected to lead for novel architecture design paradigms enabling unprecedented levels of energy efficiency, density, and reconfigurability. In this context, the goal of this thesis work was to explore and introduce new memristor based designs that combine flexibility and efficiency through the proposal of original architectures that break the limits of the existing ones. This exploration and study have been conducted at three levels: interconnect, processing, and memory levels. At interconnect level, we have explored the use of memristive devices to allow high degree of flexibility based on programmable interconnects. This allows to propose the first memristor-based reconfigurable fast Fourier transform architecture, namely mrFFT. Memristors are inserted as reconfigurable switches at the level of interconnects in order to establish flexible on-chip routing. At processing level, we have explored the use of memristive devices and their integration with CMOS technologies for combinational logic design. Such hybrid memristor-CMOS designs exploit the high integration density of memristors in order to improve the performance of digital designs, and particularly arithmetic logic units. At memory level, we have explored new in-memory computing approaches and proposed a novel logic design style, namely Memristor Overwrite Logic (MOL), associated with an original MOL-based computational memory. The proposed approach allows efficient combination of storage and processing in order to bypass the memory wall problem and thus to improve the computational efficiency. The proposed approach has been applied in three real application case studies for the sake of validation and performance evaluation
