Abstract:
Oil is the black blood that runs through the veins of the modern global energy system. While being the dominant source of energy, oil has also brought wealth and power to the western world. Future supply for oil is unsure or even expected to decrease due to limitations imposed by peak oil. Energy is fundamental to all parts of society. The enormous growth and development of society in the last two-hundred years has been driven by rapid increase in the extraction of fossil fuels. In the foresee-able future, the majority of energy will still come from fossil fuels. Consequently, reliable methods

Cranford, Richard John 1960. "Characterization and azeotropic distillation of crude wood oil." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/277197.

Abstract:
The batch distillation of crude wood oil by direct liquefaction was studied; azeotropic distillations and some characterization were also performed. It was found that 26-33 percent of the crude wood oil could be distilled by simple batch vacuum distillations with pressures from 50-300 mm Hg. With the use of ethylene glycol and glycerol 29-85 percent more oil was distilled partly due to the azeotrope formed which allows the oil to boil at a reduced pressure. The water liberated and the polymerization which took place during the distillations were studied. It was found that fluid catalytic crack

The material presented in this thesis falls into two main sections: 1. The determination of barium, strontium and calcium in oil-well waters (i) Determination of barium It is revealed that the addition of magnesium (5 g l-1) to samples for the determination of barium by d.c. plasma atomic emission spectrometry enhances the sensitivity of the analysis and dramatically reduces interference from calcium and strontium at both atomic and ionic emission wavelengths. (ii) Determination of strontium The determination of strontium in waters, was also subject to the interference of the concomitant eleme

This thesis presents an in-depth study of the gas freeing of marine crude oil tanks using numerical simulation, beginning with a general summary of the problem, followed by an outline of the objectives of this work and the main difficulties involved. To outline essential background, a review of numerical methods, fluid flow, and related physical mechanisms has been undertaken, in addition to related ventilation fields, jet and jet impingement, and tanker-borne ventilation, in order to determine the state of the art and draw useful parallels between different ventilative fields, as well as iden

Doctor of Philosophy<br>The apparent increase in market concentration and vertical integration in the Indonesian crude palm oil (CPO) industry has led to concerns about the presence of market power. For the Indonesian CPO industry, such concerns attract more attention because of the importance of this sector to the Indonesian economy. CPO is used as the main raw material for cooking oil (which is an essential commodity in Indonesia) and it contributes significantly to export earnings and employment. However, dominant producers argue that the increase in economies of scale and scope lead to an

Abstract:
This thesis presents a two-stage economic and policy analysis of the impact of European Union (EU) accession upon crude oil production and transportation policy in Lithuania. The first stage provides the theoretical framework for the research. The analysis begins with the overview of the Russian oil industry, as for over 50 years Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union and thus its oil industry was largely controlled by Russian interests. Although Lithuania became independent in 1991, the dependency on Russia in terms of energy remains until today. The following chapters introduce Lithuania's d

Refineries are amongst the largest industrial energy users. The preheat trains of their crude distillation units, extensive heat exchanger networks, are key facilities for energy efficiency. Fouling deposition on heat transfer surfaces leads to substantial energy losses, fuel consumption, operating difficulties, CO2 emissions and even throughput losses. Modelling of crude oil fouling deposits has been traditionally limited to thermal resistances. However, consideration of the local change in deposit thickness and the evolution of its properties due to ageing or changes in composition is import

Yet many questions remain regarding the way traders interact with the limit order book, especially the role of algorithmic and high frequency trading. This paper analyzes empirically the effect of crude oil price change on the economic growth of Indian-Subcontinent (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). We use a multivariate Vector Autoregressive analysis followed by Wald Granger causality test and Impulse Response Function (IRF). Wald Granger causality test results show that only India’s economic growth is significantly affected when crude oil price decreases. Impact of crude oil price increase is insignificantly negative for all three countries during first year. In second year, impact is negative but smaller than first year for India, negative
