Abstract:
AbstractIn this second report based on material collected by Prof. N. Zarenkov during the cruise of the R/V “Orlik” to the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam, in 1960, and on the cruise of the R/V “Akademik Kovalěvsky” to the Red Sea, both in 1960 and 1966, 11 species of the families Callianassidae and Upogebiidae are examined. It was found that the material includes two species, Cheramus malaccaensis (Sakai, 2002) and Trypaea tonkinae (Grebenjuk, 1975) from the Callianassidae, and Neogebicula alaini (Sakai, 1982), Paragebicula orlik sp. nov., P. vietnamensis sp. nov., Gebicula irawadyensis Sakai, 2006, Mantisgebia tuerkayi sp. nov., Upogebia acutispina De Saint Laurent & Ngoc-Ho, 1979, U. monoceros De Man, 1905, U. plantae Sakai, 1982, and U. variana sp. nov., i.e., a total of 9 species of which four are new, from the family Upogebiidae.

During the fall months of 1957, a scientific cruise was completed in some of the more northwestern fishery areas of Western Indonesia (Fig. 1) on the Indonesian research vessel "Samudera". One of the principal objectives of this cruise was to determine the rates at which inorganic carbon is converted to organic material relative to the waters of the Pacific further east. The physical nature of the waters and the hydrographic results of related cruises have been reported (e.g., SOERIAATMADJA, 1956a & b; SJARIF, 1959; WYRTKI, 1961) elsewhere.

The well-known Palaeolithic site at Cuxton, Kent (TQ 710 665) is situated on a remnant of Pleistocene terrace deposits of the Medway, which lies on a chalk spur at the junction of the main river and one of its former tributaries (Fig. 1). These deposits have been known as a source of Palaeolithic artefacts since at least 1889 (Payne 1893, cited in Tester 1965), and have been the subject of two controlled excavations, the first by P.J. Tester in 1962–3 (Tester 1965), and the second by John Cruse (on behalf of the Maidstone Area Archaeology Group) in 1984 (Cruse 1987).

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to recount the history of the marketing of the maritime passenger industry (known today as the cruise industry). This is a unique industry that has survived and thrived for almost 175 years despite dramatic environmental changes. This history focuses on passenger shipping in and out of the USA first from/to European ports, later focusing on cruises from the USA to the Caribbean, today’s most popular cruise destination. Design/methodology/approach – This study adapts the Hollander et al. (2005) approach and incorporates primary data such as fare lists, advertisements and promotional materials, as well as secondary data from a variety of expert works and government reports. Findings – This study finds that the industry’s marketing history can be divided into six periods or phases: immigration and luxury (mid-nineteenth century to 1914); World War I (1914-1918); tourism, alcohol and luxury (1918-1939); World War II (1939-1946); jet age emergence (1946-1970); and cruising for all (1970 to the present day). Continuing industry growth; increasing focus on new geographic, and every-smaller demographic and psychographic markets; promotional emphasis on cuisine and activities; and positioning as a mass-consumed luxury are trends for the future. Research limitations/implications – Space constraints limit the information mostly to Europe-to-North America sailings of British and German transatlantic lines early in the paper, and to USA-to-Caribbean cruises in later phases. Practical implications – This study illustrates how an industry can completely reinvent all elements of its marketing strategy in response to changing social and technological forces. It adds to a growing body of industry marketing histories. Originality/value – Although much has been written about maritime history, no known work has examined the history of the marketing of the maritime passenger industry. It augments the growing body of industry-specific marketing histories.

Abstract:
The German Democratic Republic (GDR) is typically portrayed as only allowing its citizens to travel within the ‘Eastern bloc’. It has passed largely unremarked upon that from 1961 to 1989, however, tens of thousands of GDR citizens travelled to Cuba, with thousands of these journeys taking place on trade union-owned cruise ships. This article investigates the implications of this largely ignored phenomenon. Accompanying these cruises was wealth of symbolism, and the tensions within this symbolism allow us to explore the peculiar global vision constructed by GDR elites, which has hitherto been largely obscured by the depiction of the GDR as a parochial, autarchic state. Cuba was part of what was known as the “socialist world system”, the collection of socialist states across the world who shared the same, socialist, societal structures. Communist theorists supposed that these societies were on a path of objective convergence, and that tourism would further this process. At the same time, Cuba was exoticized as a site of radical, southern difference and consumerist pleasure. These conflicting visions were ever present in the literature surrounding cruises to Cuba, but as time went on, the latter vision gained prominence.

Abstract. Extension of 3-D atmospheric data products back into the past is desirable for a wide range of applications. Historical upper-air data are important in this endeavour, particularly in the maritime regions of the tropics and the southern hemisphere, where observations are extremely sparse. Here we present newly digitized and re-evaluated early ship-based upper-air data from two cruises: (1) kite and registering balloon profiles from onboard the ship SMS Planet on a cruise from Europe around South Africa and across the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific in 1906/1907, and (2) ship-based radiosonde data from onboard the MS Schwabenland on a cruise from Europe across the Atlantic to Antarctica and back in 1938/1939. We describe the data and provide estimations of the errors. We compare the data with a recent reanalysis (the Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project, 20CR, Compo et al., 2010) that provides global 3-D data back to the 19th century based on an assimilation of surface pressure data only (plus monthly mean sea-surface temperatures). In cruise (1), the agreement is generally good, but large temperature differences appear during a period with a strong inversion. In cruise (2), after a correction to a subset of data, a good agreement between observations and 20CR is found for geopotential height (GPH) and temperature except for a likely cold bias of 20CR at the tropopause level. Results are considerably worse for relative humidity, which was reportedly inaccurately measured. Note that comparing 20CR, which has limited skill in the tropical regions, with measurements form ships in remote regions made under sometimes difficult conditions can be considered a worst case assessment. In view of that fact, the anomaly correlations for temperature of 0.3–0.6 in the lower troposphere in cruise (1) and of 0.5–0.7 for tropospheric temperature and GPH in cruise (2) are considered as promising results. Moreover, they are consistent with the error estimations. However, more work is needed for further improving data products in remote regions.

Abstract:
In the course of studying a number of Indo-West Pacific species of the genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile, 1915, it was noticed that Periclimenaeus spinimanus Bruce, 1969, does not fit the current definition of the genus (Bruce 1995), where the species was unfortunately used to illustrate the genus Periclimenaeus. The species is known only from the type specimen collected off Ras Asir, Somalia, at 67.5–73.1 m, during the course of the R.V. Anton Bruun cruise 9 of the International Indian Ocean Expedition in 1964. A preliminary description was provided by Bruce (1969) and later, a more detailed illustrated description (Bruce 1978). The species lacks a molar process on the dactylus and an opposing fossa on the fixed finger of the major second pereiopod, the major diagnostic character of the genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile. A new mono-specific genus is now proposed for its reception.

Abstract:
Aircraft Cruise Performance is examined by using energy-state modelling to investigate fuel-range optimal trajectories. Chattering controls are considered appropriate when the hodograph is non-convex. Classical steady-state cruise, simple chattering-cruise and the extended chattering-cruise models are studied as constrained parameter-optimization problems. The term "extended chattering" refers to vehicle system modelling extended to maintain vertical equilibrium only on the average. Numerical solution is obtained using a variable-metric gradient-protection algorithm and computational results are presented for three different aircraft. This study shows that simple chattering cruise for certain specific energies can result in substantial fuel savings over classical steady-state cruise. However extended chattering cruise results in only marginal fuel savings when compared to simple chattering cruise.

The present work is intended to the creation of a marketing plan for a new cruise company. For the implementation of this plan, a quantitative and qualitative study was carried out that helped to underpin the idea of this project. The Portuguese Cruise Company, CristaLine, aims to reach the highest possible target in the market and surprise travel lovers with other different and less expensive alternatives. Nowadays, due to the little time that daily life offers and the low economic possibilities, it is rarely considered going on vacation, going out on weekends or simply "getting out of the rut". Already thinking about all these situations, CristaLine Company is innovative in its cruise routes, restricting them, to short distance routes that will cover the main coastal cities of Portugal, Spain and Morocco. In the case of a fleet with enough ships, inspired by SeaCloud Company sailboats, around trips shall have a maximum duration of 3 days from the day of embarkation. Based on the annual travel planning of each of the CristaLine vessels, the consumer will be able to choose the city that best suits them at the time he or she wishes, and without the inconvenience of transfers, accommodation and meals, book the trip and enjoy a few different days alone, with family or friends.

According to the media, Muslims tend to violence behavior, are not open to dialogue and oppress their women. This view comes from the representations made in the middle aged Europe and does not reflect the behavior of Islam s faithful people living in our country, but it also represents the imaginary of Brazilian people and interferes directly in the relations among the members of this religious group and the rest of the population. Considering that the Federal Constitution states that every citizen is free for practice the chosen religion, this work intends to analyze the attitude of the media that acts like an instrument of labelling, to demonstrate social mechanisms that cause this behavior of the media and to verify the consequences in the people that lives in Mogi das Cruzes Muslim Community

Abstract:

Pratt, Thomas L. "A geophysical study of the earth's crust in central Virginia with implications for lower crustal reflections and Appalachian crustal structure." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71175.

Abstract:
Reprocessing of the United States Geological Survey's seismic reflection profile along Interstate 64 (I64) across Virginia with a data extension to 14-sec two-way travel time has provided a stacked section suitable for an integrated interpretation of refraction, earthquake, and blast analyses done by previous workers as well as gravity modelling done in this study. The seismic reflection profile shows a highly reflective upper crust which is consistent with an allochthonous Blue Ridge Province, possibly with underlying thrust sheets, and a basal decollement at about 9 km (3 sec) depth. Immediately east of the Blue Ridge province, the Appalachian structures plunge to up to 12 km (4 sec) depth where their interpretation on the section becomes ambiguous. The Evington Group, Hardware Terrane, and Chopawamsic metavolcanic rocks exposed in the Piedmont Province correspond to numerous reflections which appear to overlie a shallowly (10° to 15°) west-dipping, highly reflective zone dipping from 1.5 sec beneath the Goochland Terrane to 5 sec beneath the Evington Group rocks. Some of the overlying reflections apparently root in this zone which is therefore interpreted to include decollement surfaces along which the overlying rocks were transported. Grenville basement rocks are interpreted to underlie this zone and form autochthonous basement beneath the entire western portion of the profile because relatively few reflections originate from within this region. The Goochland granulite terrane is interpreted as a nappe structure which has overridden a portion of the Chopawamsic metavolcanic rocks. The Goochland terrane is bounded on the east' on the section by a broad zone of east-dipping (20° to 45°) reflections which may penetrate to Moho depths and are possibly correlative with similar events seen on other Appalachian lines. The 164 section contains a layered sequence of reflections at about 9 to 12 sec extending about 70 km west from Richmond, Virginia whose base coincides almost exactly with the Mohorovicic Discontinuity (Moho) interpreted from earlier refraction work. The deep reflections are thus believed to be lower crustal layering forming a 5 to 10 km thick Moho transition zone which is believed to persist across the state. The density contrast of 0.25 gm/cm³ between the lower crust and upper mantle derived from gravity modelling, the seismic transition zone, and the presence of intrusive rocks of lower crust-upper mantle origin at the surface are consistent with partial melting and contamination of the lower crust with upper mantle material. The refraction data and gravity modelling are consistent with a crust which thins from about 52 km beneath the Appalachian mountains to about 35 km beneath Richmond, Virginia, and rethickens by up to 10 km beneath the zone of east-dipping events east of Richmond. The pervasiveness of the zone of east-dipping events on other seismic reflection lines and the continuity of the adjacent Piedmont gravity high suggest that a similar crustal profile occurs along the length of the Appalachians.

The Institute was a primary catholic school created in 1931, to receive poor orphan girls according to the demanded will of a priest of that city. Priest João Lourenço de Siqueira, who left all his estate for the Archdiocese of São Paulo to found the Institution. The Institute, ran by the Sisters of São Vicente de Paulo de Gysegem, along the years, became an important private school in the city and began to receive an important part of the Mogiana elite. In this study I try to understand which social function the supportless childhood started to be taken into account in the Institute, from its foundation until 1966, when the intership was closed - sector which received the orphan girls - and the leaving of the Sisters of São Vicente from the Institute. The research analyzes the acting of different interlocutors who contributed to the conformation of the Institute. For that, I've used as sources, the intern laws of the Institute, the board meeting records, the reports delivered to the Archdiocese, city authors' articles and local newspapers. Inspired by the analyses of the English Historian Edward Palmer Thompson, I tried to understand the importance that the poor orphan childhood acquired in the life of the Institution, inspite of the constant decrease in the number of poor orphan girls received

Abstract:
The contention of this thesis is that previous accounts of 1956 and its impact on the Communist Party of Australia, have afforded insufficient attention to the complexities of this period in the Party’s history. The common perception has been that the Party leadership clamped down on attempts by members to generate debate and discussion about the content of Khrushchev’s ‘secret speech’ and the uprising in Hungary. The result of this was that members either concurred with the Party’s stance and stayed within its ranks, or they disagreed and resigned or were expelled. This perception is too simplistic and fails to acknowledge the manifold difficulties and uncertainties faced by both the membership and the leadership during this period. In an attempt to illuminate this chapter in the Party’s history, this thesis will argue that 1956 traced a complex path of denial, surprise, limited acceptance and intolerance on the part of the leadership; and shock, disbelief, dismay and, in some instances, indifference on the part of the membership. Chapter 1 introduces the background leading up to 1956 both internationally and domestically. It also surveys the literature that has focused, either wholly or in part, on this period. Chapter 2 details Khrushchev’s ‘secret speech’ and the events in Hungary and assesses the international reaction to these events. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the CPA and its leadership. Chapter 3 explores its reaction and approach to dealing with the ‘fallout’ from the speech in the first half of 1956, prior to the Soviet Union releasing its official statement about the speech. Chapter 4 traces the increasing hard line approach subsequently taken by the CPA leadership and its handling of the internal protests about the Soviet action in Hungary. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on the diversity of reactions displayed by members. These ranged from those who were troubled by what they learnt of Stalin’s actions but resolved, for a wide variety of reasons, to stay within the Party, to those for whom the revelations proved too divergent from their ideal of communism and either left or were removed from the party.

Abstract:
Cruising has grown over 7% a year since 1980. Sustained rapid expansion in North America, followed by local expansion in Europe and Asia, has made cruising a global industry, with 365 ships and estimated sales of $37.8 US billion (CIN, 2017). This global development has been fueled by innovation and introduction of market changing resident ships appealing to the mass traveler which were quickly matched by competitors, establishment of industry and port marketing organizations, awareness of cruising as a vacation option, and availability of suitable port and berthing facilities. When these four conditions coexisted the industry experienced rapid growth. Since 1966, the cruise industry has developed from a Miami-centered industry to a global industry centered in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia/New Zealand. Given the high cost of state-of-the-art ships, their deployment is a good indication of industry’s confidence in market growth. This chapter chronicles the development of the Asian cruise industry from 1994 through 2017. Data from Cruise Industry News Annual Reports (CIN) and Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships (Ward) are examined and conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:
In many ways the cruise industry is the success story of modern tourism. Less than 30 years ago commentators were predicting its demise after years of slow and steady decline. It had become an object of ridicule with the oft repeated joke that its customers consisted just of the ‘newly-wed, overfed, and the nearly dead’. The hit US TV show, ‘Love Boat’, set on a cruise ship, and broadcast from 1977 to 1986 seemed to mirror the decline of traditional cruising; highly popular with audiences in its early days its ratings fell and it was axed after nine years in 1986. And then, in the early 1990s, cruising went through a period of change that can only be described as revolutionary. American brands led the way in over-hauling the whole cruise experience in line with how consumer society was changing, making cruising both affordable and attractive to a wider range of demographic groups. It was no longer just for the rich and the elderly; the industry reached out to people of all ages and means. The market responded enthusiastically, and the cruise market has been growing steadily ever since. Today, cruise operators invest billions in new ships and developing new onboard experiences that will put them ahead of their competitors. Most coastal tourist destinations with any kind of port or harbour facility seek to attract as many cruise ships as possible, fully aware of the spending power of cruise passengers when they come ashore. For their part consumers are very loyal to the cruise experiences with an increasing number of people enjoying several cruises every year. There are now cruise channels on satellite and cable television and specialist cruise magazines that focus solely on cruise products and destinations. However, in the past few years, some commentators have begun to view the cruise sector through more critical eyes. Its environmental impact has not come under scrutiny until recently, as most attention has focused on the more obvious target, aviation. However, several high-profile news stories have begun to shine a spotlight on the environmental impact of cruise ships. This scrutiny is likely to intensify as more and more public and media attention is focused on the plight of our oceans and the impacts on them of global warming.

Full text
Abstract:
Synchro-Self-Shifting (SSS) Overrunning Clutches are used in a myriad of propulsion system configurations for naval and commercial vessels powered by gas turbines and/or combined gas turbine and cruise engines worldwide. Of these, much has been written about high power gas turbine propulsion clutches for large naval vessels (frigates, destroyers, cruisers, etc.), whereas less has been published about the application and experience of the propulsion machinery with Synchro-Self-Shifting Clutches for hydrofoils, hovercraft, fast patrol boats, fast ferries, yachts, etc. Space, weight, and high-speed constraints can be different for high speed gas turbine propulsion systems used in these smaller types of vessels, and can therefore provide gearing challenges, including system design challenges for these clutches. A comparison between Synchro-Self-Shifting overrunning clutches and other types of freewheels will be given discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each, particularly as they relate to high speed gas turbine marine propulsion applications. Lastly, this paper will give some history of a number of high speed gas turbine driven marine propulsion applications with clutches from the early 1960’s until the present, describe various gearing arrangements that were used in particular vessels, articulate where these clutches are incorporated, and discuss the application experience of these clutch installations.

Abstract:
In early 1997, Lakehead Pipe Line Company, Inc. (LPL) purchased the Hartsdale Terminal to better serve customers in the Chicago area by providing additional crude oil storage facilities. This terminal is located adjacent to Lakehead’s Griffith, Indiana Terminal and consists of nine crude oil tanks totaling 900,000 barrels of storage capacity. All nine of the Hartsdale tanks were constructed in 1956, are 134 ft. in diameter, and are open top with double deck style floaters. This report describes the integrity analysis of the facility and the corresponding maintenance plan that was developed. The analysis portion of this report describes the inspections that were done on the tanks, covering aspects such as weld spacing; tank settlement; interior and exterior coating failure; tank shell, bottom, and pontoon corrosion; seal wear and performance; roof drain integrity; and other OSHA and API mandates. The resulting maintenance plan is approximately a five-year window and is currently in its first year. The five-year duration was based on issues both operational and financial. A portion of the discussion is focused on the challenge of combining these two components into an overall comprehensive plan. In addition, aspects affecting the maintenance plan such as risk assessment, OSHA and API standards, and budgeting issues are described.

Abstract:
The development of the unsteady suction side boundary layer of a highly loaded LP turbine blade has been investigated in a rectilinear cascade experiment. Upstream rotor wakes were simulated with a moving-bar wake generator. A variety of cases with different wake-passing frequencies, different wake strength and different Reynolds-numbers were tested. Boundary layer surveys have been obtained with a single hot-wire probe. Wall shear stress has been investigated with surface-mounted hot-film gauges. Losses have been measured. The suction surface boundary layer development of a modern highly loaded LP turbine blade is shown to be dominated by effects associated with unsteady wake-passing. Whereas without wakes the boundary layer features a large separation bubble at a typical cruise Reynolds-number, the bubble was largely suppressed if subjected to unsteady wake-passing at a typical frequency and wake strength. Transitional patches and becalmed regions, induced by the wake, dominated the boundary layer development. The becalmed regions inhibited transition and separation and are shown to reduce the loss of the wake-affected boundary layer. An optimum wake-passing frequency exists at cruise Reynolds-numbers. For a selected wake-passing frequency and wake-strength, the profile loss is almost independent of Reynolds-number. This demonstrates a potential to design highly loaded LP turbine profiles without suffering large losses at low Reynolds-numbers.

More of the crude oil being produced in the world is heavy oil. It was reported by Meyer and Dietzman (1979) that world annual production of heavy crude oil was about five percent of other oil produced. They forecast that heavy crude oil production would increase. Canadian heavy oil production cumulative to 1979 was reported to be 197 million barrels. By 1996 Canadian daily production levels have risen to the levels shown in Table 1, with annual production of heavy oil and bitumen exceeding cumulative totals produced to 1979.

Abstract:
Korea Aerospace Research Institute has performed a joint research with the Central Institute of Aviation Motors of Russia on the design, manufacturing, and testing of an annular combustor for a turbo-fan engine with the thrust of 8,000 lbf. In order to reduce smoke generation, a rather large amount of air is introduced to the primary zone. Presented in this paper is a description of the full-scale annular combustor, the test facility, the test procedure, and the test results. The measured parameters include the pressure loss and its dependence on flow velocity, the combustion efficiency by gas analysis, the exit temperature pattern factor for a wide range of air excess ratio, the lean blow-off limit, and the emission characteristics. The main test conditions are the ‘ground idle’ condition and the ‘altitude cruise’ condition. It was confirmed that the exit temperature profile is closely related to the location of dilution holes on the flame tube. Lean blow-off limit is rather narrow since the combustor was designed to provide a large amount of air to the primary zone with an aim of smoke reduction.
