Abstract:
Abstract The Damietta Crusade offers the first book-length monograph of the Fifth Crusade in almost forty years, and only the second in over a century. It emphasizes what made this campaign unique, from its planning, choice of target, its “brown-water” or amphibious nature, course, and result. It argues that the crusade’s planners worked from an achievable grand strategy: Jerusalem’s restoration to Latin Christian hands. Operationally the crusaders invaded Egypt, designed as a stratagem to threaten the economic hub of Cairo to force Jerusalem’s return. Once in Egypt, the crusaders had to deal

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the movement from pacifism to Just War and Crusade. It also tries to demonstrate the ways prominent Catholic and Protestant leaders have harshly used violent measures within their communities, and determines contemporary manifestations of these three approaches among twenty-first-century Christians. The Crusades constitute the third type of response to war and peace among Christians, joining the ongoing Just War and pacifist traditions. The Inquisition within the Catholic Church and the city-state of Geneva under John Calvin's leadership within the emerging Protestant move

Abstract:
Almost everyone has long misinterpreted Nikita Khrushchev’s ten-year crusade to propagate the cultivation of corn, a crop important across the globe but previously rare across the vast, environmentally diverse Soviet Union. Launched in 1953, this campaign comprised a large part of the new leadership’s efforts to remedy agrarian crises inherited from Iosif Stalin. Khrushchev pressured collective and state farms to increase plantings of corn from an insignificant proportion of their crops to a peak of nearly 20 percent. Expected to feed livestock that were to yield meat and dairy products, corn

Abstract:
An aggressive clerical mood penetrated the deepest ranks of religious leadership and convinced evangelical Texans to overcome their doubts and refuse to yield any longer to the culture of anticlericalism. All over the state—and the region—activists undertook the prohibition crusade. Moral reforms attracted massive numbers, mobilized communities, created new organizations and institutions, and ultimately transformed the very nature of religion in Texas. Politics and Christianity became increasingly intertwined, grafted together so seamlessly that the two seemed indistinguishable. Religious lead
