The history of American criminal justice is, to say the least, by no means an overplowed field. In fact, it has gotten systematic attention only in recent years. The public, of course, is fascinated with crime and horrified by crime; stories about crime and criminal justice cry out from the pages of newspapers and dominate movies and television. Historical research is another matter. The first half of the twentieth century should be a rich field for research. Records are available in abundance and in every county. Urban renewal was not just a city phenomenon: it also unfolded on the beaches of coastal metropolises, most spectacularly in Los Angeles where a “beach lobby” made up of public officials, businessmen, and engineers coalesced in the 1930s. In the postwar, they implemented their vision by buying beaches for the public and turning the polluted and eroded strands of the early-twentieth century into modern playgrounds. While they effectively prevented a “white flight” from the beach and successfully reshaped the coastal environment, their efforts also resulted in the erasure of alternative beach co

Abstract:
✓ The authors retrospectively analyzed 140 patients treated at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1967 to 1990 to evaluate the results of radiation therapy (median 5400 cGy) given as an adjuvant to subtotal resection of intracranial meningioma. Of the 140 meningiomas, 117 were benign and 23 were malignant. The median follow-up period was 40 months. The overall survival rate at 5 years was 85% for the benign and 58% for the malignant tumor groups (p = 0.02); the 5-year progression-free survival rates were 89% and 48%, respectively (p = 0.001). For patients with benign meningioma,

e19043 Background: Extended follow up of the prospective Nordic MCL2 cohort shows ASCT in CR1 confers a median OS (mOS) of 12.7 y (Eskelund, BJH 2016). Incorporation of BTK inhibitors in 1L MCL is challenging the role of ASCT in an ongoing prospective trial (TRIANGLE, ASH 2022). The present study aims to evaluate the role of ASCT and the impact of social determinants of health (SDH) in a diverse real-world population of MCL patients. Methods: Adult MCL patients diagnosed from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020 in the CCR were identified with ICD-O-3 code 9673. The study was approved by UCLA

Background: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are a serious threat to public health due to high associated morbidity and mortality. Healthcare personnel (HCP) gloves and gowns are frequently contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including CRE. We aimed to identify patients more likely to transmit CRE to HCP gloves or gowns and HCP types and interactions more likely to lead to glove or gown contamination. Methods:Between January 2016 and August 2018, patients with a clinical or surveillance culture positive for CRE in the preceding 7 days were enrolled at 5 hospitals in C

Plants of commercial strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch., cv. Camarosa) exhibiting extensive fruit phyllody (development of leafy structures from achenes) were observed in a winter greenhouse production facility in West Virginia. In July 2001, 95 dormant, cold-stored plants were purchased from a California strawberry nursery, potted and grown in this West Virginia facility. Five of the plants developed fruits with phylloid growths. These fruits were assessed for phytoplasma infection using nested polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) in which initial ribosomal (r) DNA amplification was primed by

Abstract.Including dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in pelleted feed is often limited because of pellet quality concerns. Crude-fat acts as a lubricant in the DDGS when flowing through the pellet die, thus reducing die resistive force in the die, which in turn, reduces pellet durability index (PDI). Including a low-oil DDGS (5.9% crude-fat) instead of a medium-oil DDGS may mitigate these adverse effects. Low-oil DDGS are commonly pelleted for supplemental feeding to increase bulk density, flowability, and reduce feed wastage, but pelleting low-oil DDGS as the sole ingredient is not
