The risk factors for C. laurentii infections usually include diminished Cell mediated immunity and presence of invasive devices, while mortality risks increases with CNS involvement and age above 45 years. Introduction: Fungi of the genus Cryptococcus are cosmopolitan and may be agents of opportunistic mycoses in immunocompromised and sometimes immunocompetent individuals. Cryptococcus species are frequently isolated from trees and bird excreta in the environment and infection occurs by inhalation of propagules dispersed in the air. The aim was to investigate Cryptococcus species in bird excreta and tree hollows located in a university hospital area and in an academic area of a university campus.

Cryptococcus laurentii has been classically considered a saprophytic species, although several cases of human and animal infection have been already reported. This species is reported to be heterogenous. The taxonomy of yeast Cryptococcus laurentii was always highly ambiguous. The application of molecular biology and bioinformatic methods led to dividing of searched strains to two distinct phylogenetic groups, some varieties were recognized as species and the locution „Cryptococcus laurentii group“ was introduced. Oilseeds and cereal grains, two major constituents of the diet of animals, contain phytic acid, which is the main storage form of phosphorus in plant cells. Monogastric animals, such as poultry and pigs, are not capable of utilising the bound phosphorus in phytic acid since they do not produce phytase, the essential hydrolysing enzyme. The yeasts inhibited conidial germination of the pathogen, but did not kill the spores. Effectiveness of the three yeasts as antagonists was associated in part with their ability to rapidly colonize wound sites, despite low nutrient availability.
