Abstract:
A spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique that extracts the structure factor of hydrogen atoms, i.e. the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal's structure factor, has been developed. Crystals of L-glutamic acid were dispersed in a D-polystyrene matrix containing 4-methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy to polarize their proton spins dynamically. The intensities of the diffraction peaks of the sample changed according to the proton polarization, and the structure factor of the hydrogen atoms was extracted from the proton-polarization-dependent intens

Copper and its alloys are highly valued for their moldability, heat/electricity conduction, and corrosion resistance, making them widely used in various industrial applications. One potential application of copper is as the corrosion barrier for used nuclear fuel containers (UFCs) within a deep geological repository (DGR) in Canada, Sweden and Finland. The UFC's copper surface will be exposed to different conditions in the evolving DGR environment, which will transition from warm, dry, and oxic to cool, wet, and anoxic conditions. Deliquescence is a known process in forming the initial corrosi

Some of the diarylethene derivatives were found to undergo photoisomerization reactions between two isomers even in the single-crystalline phase. The two isomers have different electronic as well as geometrical structures. The electronic structure change induces the reversible color change of the crystal. Single crystals composed of three different kinds of diarylethenes having similar geometrical structures, bisoxazolylethene, bisthiazolylethene, and bisthienylethene have been prepared. The crystals exhibited multicolor photochromism. The colorless crystals turned yellow, red, and blue upon i

Superlattice formation in thin layers of oxidizing crystals and the effect of near-surface proton saturation on structure ordering, formation and periodical distribution of quantum wells have been discussed. The paper shows, it is necessary to develop non-Euclidean approach to the crystal’s internal geometry and consider, in consecutive order, the question of the four-dimentional Riemannian space into three-dimentional Eucliden space interpretation (RE interpretation).

The importance of atom layer terraces or steps on platinum surfaces used for catalysis as discussed by Somorjai justifies an extensive investigation of the structure of platinum surfaces through electron microscopy at the atomic resolution level. Experimental and theoretical difficulties complicate the quantitative determination of platinum surface structures but qualitative observation of surface structures on platinum crystals is now possible with good experimental facilities.Ultrathin platinum crystals with nominal 111 orientation are prepared using the procedure reported by Hines without t

Abstract:
We propose a novel method of tailoring the band structure of 2D phononic crystals (PnC) by reducing the lattice symmetry. Specifically, symmetry reduction by stretching and distorting the crystal face is explored. The transmission spectrum of the PnC was numerically calculated using the layer multiple-scattering method. Change in the shape and size of the band gaps is demonstrated as well as form of pass bands inside the stop band. The practical feasibility of the PnC sensor concept was evaluated for the case of synthetic quartz matrix and water inclusions. A distinct pattern of the pass band

Three-dimensional electron diffraction (3DED) offers a powerful alternative to single-crystal X-ray diffraction(SCXRD) for the structure determination of crystalline materials with small-sized crystals (usually nanometresized)or crystals with intergrowths, often produced during zeolite synthesis. ADOR is a synthesis strategy ofnovel daughter zeolites from well-known parent germanosilicates. Structure determination of such ADOR zeolitesis challenging due to the presence of aggregated intergrowths, and often small-sized crystals.
