“Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” are the two most important literatures from Pai Hsien-yung Because of the instability of the era, Pai Hsien-yung has a unique life experience. This causes Pai Hsien-yung to reflect the vanishing and changing of “time and space” in his novels, whether he was building the emotions or creating the arrangement of ideas. These all originate from his constant changing of life experience in respect of “time and space.” Thus, this thesis will begin with Pai Hsien-yung’s life experience. From there, we will investigate the reasons why Pai Hsien-yung was so conscious of “time and space” in his novels. Besides the influence of his unique life experience, “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” also have a very close connection with the status identification in respect to “time and space”. Therefore, after understanding the reasons why Pai Hsien-yung has shown concerns of “time and space,” we will turn our attention to how the status identification has influenced the creation and existence of “time and space” in “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys.” Because the characters in “Taipei people” are mostly restricted to the status identification in the “past” and they can’t forget their time in China, so when they are forced to move to Taiwan, they are still stuck with their past memory of dreamland. Thus, the status identification from the “past” in “Taipei People” is from the “time” perspective and the stage of “space” in this novel is also setup for the time in the past. On the other hand, different from “Taipei People”, where the status identification is limited to the “past,” the existence of wandering between time and space and exiling from family to country in “Grystal Boys” is coming from the characters’ own “homosexuality” status. Because of the homosexuality status in “Grystal Boys,” the “time” becomes ambiguous and the “space” is vanished. Between banished from the family and exiled from the country, time and space are suppressed forcefully. The most important reason of changing in time and space is coming from not be able to identify by other people, not because of self-identified. Because the characters in “Taipei People” can never forget their younger years in China, the so-called “Taipei People” are exiled between time and space. This causes them to deny both Taipei and China. Therefore, “Taipei” or Taipei “People” pronounces absence in the present of “existence” in respect to the status identification. Contrarily, the next generation of “Taipei People,” “Grystal Boys”, based on the unique family tree, expression style of passions, and banishing between time and space, reveals the real vitality of the regional space of Taipei. Through narration, people become the ideal world, collective memories and individual feelings in the space structure. These collective memories and individual feelings are the main reasons to cause for the status identification. It’s obvious that the characters in “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys,” drifting and banishing in time and space, have a very close connection with the status identification. The mutual influence between these two novels is inseparable. Thus, this thesis will compare “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” and provide an in-depth analysis of the inter-relationship between status identification and time and space.
