Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to use confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to revise the factor structure of the CSAI-2 using one data set, and then to use CFA to validate the revised structure using a second data set. The first data set (calibration sample) consisted of 503 college-age intramural athletes, and the second (validation sample) consisted of 331 intercollegiate (Division I) and interscholastic athletes. The results of the initial CFA on the calibration sample resulted in a poor fit to the data. Using the Lagrange Multiplier Test (Gamma) as a guide, CSAI-2 items that loaded on more than one factor were sequentially deleted. The resulting 17-item revised CSAI-2 was then subjected to a CFA using the validation data sample. The results of this CFA revealed a good fit of the data to the model (CFI = .95, NNFI = .94, RMSEA = .054). It is suggested that the CSAI-2R instead of the CSAI-2 be used by researchers and practitioners for measuring competitive state anxiety in athletes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. This study aims to analyze the convergent validity of an instrument for the three-dimensional measurement of mood states: the POMS-VIC. The instrument was applied to 62 students from the UAM Sports Service. The scores offered by the athletes when completing the POMS-VIC and other similar tests (PIED) Interactive Profile of Moods, (Barrios & González, 2012); (STAI) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Guillén-Riquelme & Buela-Casal, 2011) and (CSAI-2R) Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (Andrade et al., 2007) were compared. The correlation coefficient was calculated by Spearman rank and non-parametric group contrast using the Mann Whitney U test. Appreciating mean correlations between PIED and POMS_Intensidad (rho=-.61), POMS_Valencia (rho=.34) and POMS_Control (rho=.43). As well as between POMS_Intensidad and the three subscales of CSAI (Cognitive, rho=-.31), (Somatic, rho=-.55) and (Selfconfidence, rho=.56). It is concluded that there is a considerable relationship between the POMS-VIC and the considered instruments. This result implies that the proposal scale is valid for the mood state measurement and allows its use in the sports field. Therefore, the instrument is considered to have an important practical impact for sport psychology.

Abstract:
Recent scientific studies conducted with athletes of various sports modalities showed that pre-competition anxiety directly affects the performance and yield of athletes, damaging their results. However, studies with wheelchair fencing athletes, as well as the influence of sex on pre-competition anxiety, have not yet been conducted. To analyse the influence of sex on pre-competition anxiety in wheelchair fencing athletes. The sample consisted of eighteen (n=18) athletes, divided into men (n=10) and women (n=8). All were competitors of wheelchair fencing, participants of the two Brazilian cups, the national sports calendar, in the year 2018, linked to the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. For data collection, the athletes responded to a semi-structured questionnaire with twenty questions related to life habits and physical, technical, tactical and psychological training and to the anxiety inventory of the competitive state test (CSAI-2R). In the analysis of the CSAI-2R test data there was no statistically significant difference in the total score between men and women (P>0.05). However, when analysing each question separately, some differences were found in questions regarding the body tense, afraid of poor performance and feeling stiffness, the score was higher in women when compared to men. In questions regarding confidence in facing the challenge and be safe, since they imagined reaching the initial objective, the score was higher in men when compared to women (P<0.01; P<0.03, respectively). Pre-competition anxiety is not directly influenced by sex in wheelchair fencing athletes. However, it may be related to the way athletes see, feel and interpret situations that originate in the universe of competitions. Specifically, women have demonstrated greater body tension and are more concerned with their performance, while men have shown themselves to be more self-confident, which seems to be associated with the longest time of practice in the sport.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to show the links and differences in the expressions of competitive anxiety in the face of the existence of resilient resources in young athletes, according to sporting (years of experience) and personal (gender) characteristics. To meet these aims, the participants answered the Resilience Scale (RS-14) and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2R (CSAI-2R). The sample consisted of 241 adolescent handball and basketball players between 14 and 17 years old. Different analyses were performed, including a differential and multivariate descriptive, a correlation, and a multiple regression. The results showed that anxiety was negatively related to resilience in its acceptance dimension. It was shown that girls showed higher levels of somatic anxiety, while boys showed higher levels of acceptance. Statistically significant differences were found in the resources for acceptance in favor of boys, while there were significantly different indicators in somatic anxiety and self-confidence in favor of girls. The sports experience was positively related to resilience and negatively to anxiety. Although the existence of indicators of cognitive anxiety (e.g., recurrent thoughts or rhyming), coaches and athletes need to understand that they are also indicators of a necessary activation for psychological functioning. Channeling such a process through psychological training of different skills will enhance the capacities for self-confidence.

Abstract:
Precompetitive anxiety and performance in young rhythmic gymnastics athletes: a case study.BACKGROUND: Rhythmic gymnastics is characterized by an athlete’s early participation in training and competition. This participation can cause high levels of anxiety and may impact negatively on sports performance.OBJECTIVE: To verify the precompetitive anxiety and performance responses in rhythmic gymnastics athletes.METHODS: Two rhythmic gymnastics athletes, aged 11 and 12 years old, were evaluated in individual clubs and rope apparatus, during a simulated and official competition. Precompetitive anxiety was assessed by CSAI-2R questionnaire, and performance was assessed by the athlete´s perception and jury score for each presentation. RESULTS: The descriptive data suggest that in the official competition, the athletes presented higher values of somatic and cognitive anxiety, followed by a greater perception of performance. For the jury score, the athletes presented higher values in clubs and lower values in the rope apparatus during the official competition than the simulated competition.CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that precompetitive anxiety tends to be higher in more stressful conditions (official vs. simulated competition), but this behavior does not seem to influence the performance of gymnasts in individual presentations negatively.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to describe the anxiety responses and coping strategies used by competitive judokas of different sex category, level of performance, experience and age category. The sample was composed of 58 competitive Spanish judokas. They completed a battery of test composed by a socio-demographic questionnaire, the CSAI-2R and the ISRA-B, responses version, to evaluate anxiety. Finally, we used the ISCCS to evaluate the judokas’ coping strategies. The results showed that women, low performance judokas, experienced judokas and the top age categories (junior and senior) presented high levels of anxiety and lower auto confidence. Correlational analysis showed that judokas’ most used strategies were task oriented coping (TOC), though with high levels of anxiety they choose emotional oriented coping (EOC), which the scientific literature does not associate with good performance. In addition, high levels of auto confidence correlated positively with distraction-oriented coping (DOC). The practical implication of this work relates to the usefulness of this information for the improvement and optimization of competitive judokas’ copying strategies.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n3p353 The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of mental training on the competitive anxiety of young swimmers. The sample consisted of 35 swimmers aged 15 - 17 years (M = 15.93; SD = 0.98), randomly divided into two groups: experimental group (EG, n = 17) and control group (CG, n = 18). The study lasted eight weeks. Both groups performed the same physical/technical training planning. CG watched advertisement videos while EG performed mental training. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R) was administered to all athletes before the start of the season and the last week of the “taper” mesocycle. The findings revealed that the “cognitive anxiety” and “somatic anxiety” subscale scores attenuated from pre-test to post-test in EG (p = 0.01) and remained stable in CG (p = 0.15). The results showed that the “self-confidence” subscale score increased from pre-test to post-test in EG (p = 0.01) and remained stable in CG (p = 0.26). Significant difference was found in “cognitive anxiety” (p = 0.01), “somatic anxiety” (p = 0.01) and “self-confidence” (p = 0.01) subscales across EG and CG after 8 weeks. It was concluded that mental training was effective in reducing anxiety (cognitive and somatic) and increasing the self-confidence of young swimmers.

Abstract:
Abstract. The objective of this work was to measure the levels of precompetitive anxiety and its relationship with the secretion of cortisol measured at the salivary level within an official swimming competition. 19 swimmers of both sexes participated, with an average age of 12.64 years old (SD = 1.65). The physiological measure included salivary cortisol measured with ELISA. In addition, precompetitive psychological states were measured with the CSAI-2R. Data collection was carried out at two times, in time 1 salivary cortisol was measured three weeks before a competition (baseline); while in time 2 salivary cortisol was measured 16 hours before the competition, and precompetitive anxiety was measured. The two collections were made at 16 hours. For the analysis of the data, the sample was divided into two subsamples, one with participants 10 and 11 years old, and the other with those aged 12 to 16 years. The results of the conventional statistical analysis by null hypothesis, reject significant differences in the concentration of salivary cortisol between the two moments, for both subsamples. However, the relevant minimum change confirmed a significant change of precompetitive salivary cortisol for the first subsample. In addition, both subsamples have low precompetitive anxiety. Cortisol concentrations one day before the competition did not correlate with anxiety (somatic and cognitive). In conclusion, low cortisol levels and high levels of self-confidence suggest an adaptive psychobiological response to competitions. This can contribute to the performance and expected results in the competition.

Abstract:
This study examined psychometric properties of a Malaysian-language Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2) in three separate studies. Study 1 examined the criterion validity and internal consistency of SAS-2 among 119 developmental hockey players. Measures of trait anxiety and mood states along with digit vigilance, choice reaction time, and depth perception tests were administered. Regression analysis revealed that somatic anxiety and concentration disruption were significantly associated with sustained attention. Worry was significantly associated with depth perception but not sustained attention. Pearson correlation coefficients also revealed significant relationships between SAS-2 subscales and negative mood state dimensions. Study 2 examined the convergent and discriminant validity of SAS-2 by correlating it with state anxiety measured by the CSAI-2R. Significant positive relationships were obtained between SAS-2 subscales and somatic and cognitive state anxiety. Conversely, state self-confidence was negatively related to SAS-2 subscales. In addition, significant differences were observed between men and women in somatic anxiety. Study 3 examined the factorial validity of the Malaysian SAS-2 using confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 539 young athletes. Confirmatory factor analysis results provided strong support for the SAS-2 factor structure. Path loadings exceeding 0.5 indicated convergent validity among the subscales, and low to moderate subscale intercorrelations provided evidence of discriminant validity. Overall, the results supported the criterion and construct validity of this Malaysian-language SAS-2 instrument.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between cognitive competitive anxiety intensity and coping strategies in table tennis players. One hundred and two (102) US competitive table tennis players of age range from 10 to 60 filled out a Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2R, Cox et al., 2003) at least 30 minutes before the start of their tournament match and a Modified Cope questionnaire (MCOPE; Crocker and Graham, 1995) 15 minutes after they finished their match. Our study found significant differences between low and high cognitive competitive anxiety groups with regard to the use of coping strategies. The high cognitive competitive anxiety intensity group used significantly more behavioral disengagement (avoidance coping, p ≤ 0.05), denial coping strategies (emotion focused coping, p ≤ 0.01) compared to the low cognitive anxiety intensity group. Our results suggest that there is some connection between anxiety intensity and coping strategies. If the cognitive anxiety intensity (for example, intensity from worrying) is very high, an athlete might be more likely to use avoidance coping (such as behavioral disengagement) and emotion-focused coping (such as denial and venting of emotions) compared to athletes who have low cognitive competitive anxiety. Furthermore, gender differences in cognitive anxiety and direction were found. Confidence management techniques such as positive self-talk, breathing techniques and visualization should be taught to athletes to assist them in coping with their competitive anxiety better and to enhance their performance.

Abstract:
Background: Reports of probiotic consumption on athletes’ performance are debatable due to their equivocal results. There is a need for more evidence on the effects of probiotic intake on psychological state and fitness level. Thus, this study determined the effects of daily probiotic consumption on competitive anxiety, perceived stress and mood among university badminton players, besides their fitness like aerobic capacity, strength, speed, leg power and agility. Methods: Thirty university badminton players aged from 19 to 22 years old were randomly divided equally into two groups, where the probiotic group (PG; n = 15) received a drink that contained Lactobacillus casei Shirota (3 × 1010 CFU) and placebo group (CG; n = 15) a placebo drink for six weeks. Anxiety, stress and mood levels were determined using the CSAI-2R, PSS and BRUMS questionnaires, respectively. Fitness levels were measured using by subjecting the players to 20-m shuttle runs (aerobic capacity), handgrips (muscular strength), vertical jumps (leg power), 40-m dash (speed) and T-test (agility). The Student’s t-test (p < 0.05) was used to determine the differences between PG and CG players. Results: After six weeks, the anxiety and stress levels of PG players significantly decreased by 16% (p < 0.001) and 20% (p < 0.001), respectively, but there were no significant changes detected in CG players. Supplementation of probiotics also improved aerobic capacity in PG players by 5.9% (p < 0.001) but did not influence the speed, strength, leg power and agility. Conclusions: Probiotics supplementation showed improved aerobic capacity and relieve anxiety and stress. However, further studies need to be carried out to determine the mechanisms through which probiotic intake produces these effects.

Abstract:
Working in the discipline of eventing (the triathlon of equestrian sport), the present study aims to extend current literature on the use of psychological skills within equestrian sports, by understanding and identifying differences in levels of self-confidence and competitive anxiety. Each eventing phase (dressage, show-jumping and cross-country) was considered and its impact on anxiety and self-confidence analysed. Level of competition was considered a covariate and its effect on specific eventing phases and any associated influence on anxiety and self-confidence within eventing phase was analysed. An experimental, 3×3 factorial, within-subjects design was used. 57 participants (52 female and 5 male; 18 professional, 36 amateur and 3 undefined) completed the Revised Competitive Sport Anxiety Inventory 2 (CSAI-2R), a 17-item questionnaire measuring anxiety and self-confidence. Descriptive statistics identified the show-jumping phase had the largest impact on rider somatic anxiety (SA) and cognitive anxiety (CA). The cross-country phase had the highest self-confidence mean score. Spearman’s rank correlations showed both SA and CA were debilitative for all competition levels. Both SA and CA were found to be more debilitating in the show-jumping phase when self-confidence was low. MANCOVA analysis showed that eventing phase had significant effect on anxiety and self-confidence when controlling for level of competition. Dependent on the eventing phase riders are competing in, they experience different levels of arousal and self-confidence. When SA and CA are a debilitative source of anxiety, this could result in rider muscle tension which is not conducive to effective horse-rider communication. Coaches or sports psychologists should consider how to help riders manage their anxiety levels in relation to the competition phase, with the intention of enhancing self-confidence and enabling facilitative SA and CA in preparation for eventing performance.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in English; abstract also in Chinese. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of three psychological intervention strategies in regulating the pre-competition mood states among volleyball players with matching hypothesis. The Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) was employed to examine the pre-competition mood states patterning of its six sub-scales during the time leading up to competition. Participants were the youth state volleyball players (N=96; boys = 48, girls = 48; Age: M=16.35 yr., SD = .89 yr.) competing in the Under 18 National School Sport Council of Malaysia Volleyball Tournament 2008. The Competitive Sport Anxiety Inventory-2 Revised (CSAI-2R) was employed to collect the baseline data two months prior to the official competition during the first meeting. The group with the highest group mean scores in cognitive anxiety component was assigned to a cognitive intervention group (n = 24) in which participants underwent breathing technique & autogenic relaxation with music lasting for 30 minutes per session; the group with the highest group mean scores in somatic anxiety component (n=24) completed the somatic intervention with progressive muscular relaxation lasting for 30 minutes; the selfconfidence intervention group which rated the lowest mean group scores in self-confidence component carried out the intervention with positive self-talk and goal setting exercises lasting 30 minutes; and a control group (n = 24). Results of this study revealed that the cognitive intervention was the most effective intervention followed by the somatic intervention in regulating the bad mood states and facilitating the good mood states prior to competition. Similarly, the self-confidence intervention was able to facilitate the vigour sub-scale prior to competition.

Abstract:
Competitive anxiety is one of the psychological factors which greatly affect athletes' performances. Competitive anxiety is divided into somatic anxiety and cognitive anxiety. This study was conducted to look at mindfulness and coping skills as predictors of competitive anxiety. Through purposive sampling techniques, some (N = 159) senior athletes, representatives of various sports from various provinces in Indonesia, with an age range of 18-40 years were included in this study. This non-experimental research method design used three questionnaires, consisting of AAQ-II (mindfulness), ACSI (coping skills), and CSAI-2R (competitive anxiety) as measurement tools. Statistical analysis, using multiple regression, showed that mindfulness and coping skills simultaneously have a linear relationship to competitive anxiety, and significantly predict a competitive anxiety level of 29%. This means that mindfulness and coping skills can decrease competitive anxiety in athletes. Further analysis found that mindfulness plays a greater role in reducing competitive anxiety than coping skills.

Abstract:
