Full textThis study gives on the one hand, an overall view of the copper, nickel and tin corrosion exposed in various outdoor atmospheres, on the other hand, some considerations on the setting of the technical device allowing normalised indoor corrosion tests with four pollutant gas (SO₂, NO₂, H₂S et Cl₂). A multi-analytical approach was chosen to characterise the corrosion products, combining physical and chemical techniques, that give qualitative and quantitative informations. Corrosion of copper is uniform and the corrosion layer consists of a complex mixture rich in copper (I) oxide and copper sulfates. With the nickel, we are able to show a pitting corrosion mechanism, in which there is formation of nickel sulfates and nickel chlorines corrosion products in the pit and a nickel carbonate all around. Tin corrosion is heterogeneous with formation of clusters composed of several corrosion products, in which an amorphous stannic hydrated oxide is the main phase. Atmospheric precipitations have an essential impact on the copper corrosion rate, and more again on the nickel one. Ozone concentration in air appears also as an essential parameter, which must be taken into account to understand the corrosion mechanism. As part of the accelerated corrosion test in laboratory, we have shown a catalytic effect of the stainless steel exposure chamber, on the chemical reactions between gas. The effect of the concentration ratio H₂S/Cl₂ in copper, nickel and tin corrosion have been also studied

Full textThe copper-catalyzed decarboxylation of aromatic carboxylic acids has been advantageously achieved by using aliphatic amines like N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) or hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as ligands instead of the aromatic heterocyclic amines (quinoline, phenanthroline) used until now. The improvement is significant since the reaction can be performed at a lower temperature (ca. 50 °C less) and the reaction time is clearly shorter. This new catalytic system was developed owing to a careful analysis of the reaction mechanism. The reaction conditions described herein also allow us to perform copper/palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions between 120 to 140 °C instead of 170 °C. Thereby, biaryls and triarylethylenes compounds were obtained in good yields. Moreover, the multi-step synthesis of the anticancer agent (Z)-Tamoxifen was completed using a decarboxylative cross-coupling reaction as the key step. The results reported above could open the way to the development of low temperature procedures. It is worthy of note that, for large-scale applications, it is very advantageous to replace 1,10- phenanthroline by TMEDA which is clearly less expensive. A new reaction of demethylation-decarboxylation of o-methoxy aromatic carboxylic acids was also described. Finally, a cheap and user-friendly nickel/manganese catalytic system was developed for the efficient cross-coupling of functionalized aromatic chlorides with aromatic grignard reagents

Full textThe mechanical behavior of high purity polycrystalline copper and nickel is investigated with mechanical tests for different numbers of grains across the thickness. The characterization of size effects is performed on samples with constant thickness (t = 500 µm) and various grain sizes d. Firstly, the different microstructures are characterized by EBSD. Secondly, the strain path influence on size effects is investigated at room temperature with tensile and Nakazima tests. If the t/d ratio is reduced below a critical value, the mechanical behavior shows a strong softening. This modification appears from a critical plastic strain level which is strongly dependent of the loading. Thirdly, to understand if the behavior modification can be reduced by microforming at temperature, the mechanical behavior is studied in tension at temperature ranging between -70 °C and 200 °C. For each temperature, grain size effect is studied with the Hall-Petch law and the work-hardening modification by Mecking-Kocks formalism. This formalism analysis associated with observations of dislocation structures by TEM and numerical simulation allow to discuss on the origin of the polycrystal/multicrystal transition, with the implementation of surface effects. The comparison between copper and nickel leads the discussion on the stacking fault energy influence on the strain mechanisms

Three different types of actuators using a Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloy have been designed and studied. One of them has led to a mass production for a general public appliance

Full textNanocomposite metal/carbon thin films, consisting of metal rich nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix, present specific and tunable physicochemical properties, depending on the chemical composition of thin films. The morphology and the microstructure of these materials have been explored on a wide range of chemical composition using electronic microscopy, EDX, XPS, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of the metal nature on the nanocomposite metal/carbon thin film microstructure and electrical properties was studied for two metals : nickel and copper. The thin films were deposited using two different plasma processes : a first one combining the magnetron sputtering of the metal target (nickel or copper) and the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition in an argon/methane gas mixture, and the other one consisting in the cosputtering of metal and graphite targets. The study of the electrical properties highlighted an electrical percolation phenomenon. The catalytic properties for the carbon nanotubes growth and the piezoresistive behavior of nickel based thin films were studies. In addition, an original method based on the selective etching of copper nanoparticles contained in nc-Cu/C thin films was developed, leading to the synthesis of nanoporous carbon electrodes

Full textCircularity defects (AEL) appear in railway wheels during running. These circularity defects require periodic controls and machinings to eliminate them. The aim of the study is to determine the origin of the circularity defects and to developpe an accelerated test to compare different steels. For this study, we have used the concept of driven alloys which as show, for materials submitted to repeated stresses, that phase transformation occurring, depend on the value of an intensity of forcing. First of all, we have defined and calculated an intensity of forcing for the wheel. Next, we have performed a metallurgical study of several railway wheels, and we have shown a metallurgical transformation at the surface of the wheels, characterized by a transformed layer with metallurgical properties very different from those of the bulk steel. The wear of the wheel is due to a cyclic mechanism including metallurgical transformation, cracking and tearing off of the transformed material, and the increase of the AEL is due to a locally faster wear rate, caused by a shape defect or a microstructural heterogeneity. An accelerated test, based on high energy ball milling, has been developed to compare different steels. We success to determine and compare the cementite dissolution rate and we show that the cementite dissolution control the material wear rate. In the same way, attempts were used to simulate the wheel-rail contact. A metallurgical transformation, similar to this observed at the surface of the wheel, was obtained, and shows that shearing is necessary to obtain the metallurgical transformation of the material

Full textMetals are necessary for living organisms like bacteria. There is a subtle balance between the life required amount and toxicity resulting from an overload of metal ions. The intracellular level of these ions must be tightly regulated. A strategy often used by cells is to regulate uptake and efflux of metal ions by expressing specific proteins. In the bacterium Escherichia coli, nickel and cobalt toxicity is counterbalanced by action of the RcnA efflux pump that permits excess Ni2+ et Co2+ ions to be excluded out of cells. Its expression is under the control metalloregulator RcnR that represses RcnA transcription in absence of metals. Recently, we identified a new gene that we called RcnB involved in this system. This gene is a part of the RcnAB operon and is involved in nickel and cobalt homeostasis. Unlike RcnA, a mutant strain lacking RcnB is more résistant to nickel and cobalt. This phenotype is associated to a lower accumulation of these ions in the cells. RcnB gene encodes a small monomeric protein of 10 kDa which is found in the periplasmic fraction. Until now, databases do not contain any described homologs. RcnB displayed any Ni2+ et Co2+ binding capacity. RcnB can bind both Cu+ and Cu2+ ions in vitro. It is equally true in vivo and a link with copper homeostasis was found based on the copper resistance systems of E. Coli. Copper confers particular redox properties to proteins which could be directly related to the biological function of the RcnB protein. Further studies are required to precise the role of RcnB but this work provides the identification and characterization of the first member of a new family of accessory proteins tied to metal ions efflux pumps

Full textLa première partie est consacrée à l'étude du ligand L1, de son dérivé N-méthylé L2 et d'un récepteur ditopique constitué de deux unités dioxocyclamiques maintenues face-à-face par des ponts m-xylyle (L3). Des titrages potentiométriques ont mis en évidence la protonation coopérative des deux diamides monocycliques et un phénomène d'allostérie induit par le proton dans le cas du macrotricycle L3. Les complexes de nickel(II) et de cuivre(II) de géométrie plan-carrée ont été isolés et caractérisés par diffraction des rayons X, spectroscopies IR, UV-vis et RPE. La formation de liaisons hydrogène intermoléculaires entre les atomes d'oxygène amidiques et les molécules d'eau cocristallisées affectent l'énergie des orbitales d du cuivre.
La seconde partie relate la synthèse et les études physico-chimiques à l'état solide et en solution de macrobicycles possédant une anse o-xylyle (L4), m-xylyle (L5 et L7) ou pyridyle (L6). Leurs propriétés structurales et acido-basiques sont gouvernées par la formation de liaisons hydrogène intramoléculaires qui impliquent les amines tertiaires dont la protonation est lente à l'échelle de temps de la spectroscopie RMN. Les complexes de cuivre(II) correspondants ont été étudiés par diffraction des rayons X et par spectroscopies IR, UV-vis et RPE. Les ligands L4, L5 et L7 coordinent l'ion Cu2+ selon une géométrie plan-carrée déformée tandis que le ligand pentadentate L6 conduit selon le pH à la formation réversible d'un complexe tétra- ou pentacoordiné. La structure cristallographique du composé [Cu(L7)](ClO4)2 a montré que les contraintes stériques imposées par la cage moléculaire rigide induisent une déformation du noyau benzénique de l'anse et une interaction entre le métal et le cycle aromatique.

Full textThe technique of dynamic chemical plating is a new method which consists in direct metallization of a substrate. This technique is based on projection of a reducing agent and of a metal salts at the same time but separately onto a conductor or non-conductor substrate. Thus a very thin liquid film is formed and is adsorbed on the surface. This film, containing the active species, is also thermodynamically unstable which means that the oxidation-reduction reaction will occur spontaneously onto the substrate. The NiB and the Copper dynamic deposition were elaborated at room temperature. This work consists of the realization and caracterization of Ni and Cu composite coatings by this technique. This research outlines the development of the codeposition of micro or nano particles of graphite or PTFE in the NiB, NiBP and Cu matrix. The deposition rate under the optimum operating conditions is approximately 6 µmh-1, while the amount of the graphite and PTFE codeposited are about 12% and 24%, respectively. The coefficient of friction of these composites was determined by about 0. 1. With regard to the low coefficient of friction, it is possible to realize the thin films of NiB and NiBP composite with the thickness of 2µm for the applications of the solid lubricants on the one hand and the copper composite coating in order to the anti-wear functional films on the other hand

Full textIn the context of integration of low power DC-DC converters, the topic of this work consists in studying the integration of inductors on silicon. The difficulties of this kind of integration are related to the development, the compatibility of the whole technological processes, which are used for fabricating the complete system, and the manufacturing cost. First, a bibliographical synthesis has been made on the integrated inductors as well as conducting and magnetic materials and their deposit techniques. Once we have set the objectives, in particular the nature of the used materials, we have developed the electrochemical deposits and the thick photoresists processes that are required for the fabrication of moulds. These photoresists must withstand to chemical and physical constraints. A first structure of spiral type inductor has been calculated and the fabrication process has been determined. In the same time, specific devices have been studied then realized in order to characterize the electrochemical deposited layers in terms of resistivity, permeability and alloy composition. The last part of this thesis consists in applying this fabrication process to a second type of structure, which have been studied with the aim of reducing the number of technological steps. Currently, the first prototypes of these two kinds of inductors have been fabricated with low thickness materials layers. These prototypes confirm the feasibility of these devices
