Zhang, Anqi. "On Non-culminating Accomplishments in Mandarin." Thesis, The University of Chicago, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10841102.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the ''non-culminating accomplishments'' in Chinese. In Mandarin, the accomplishment predicates, such as 'fix a car' and 'eat three apples', surprisingly do not necessarily entail the completion of the event in the perfective aspect as in English. This phenomenon is crucial for understanding how English and Chinese differ in their aspectual and verbal systems. The goal of my dissertation is to pinpoint the location where the culmination of event is encoded in the semantic composition. I argue that in Chinese the ''non-culminating accomplishments'' arise because of either how some verb meaning is packaged, or how the verb and the direct object interact. I propose that transitivity, degree semantics, and the referentiality of the incremental theme are three major factors that give rise to non-culminating accomplishment readings in Mandarin.

Unlike most previous analyses with a narrower focus, my dissertation offers a comprehensive study of all the relevant factors including the semantics of perfective markers, verbal classifications, and the composition of the meaning of the verb and the direct object. My dissertation contributes significantly to event semantics, by developing reliable ways to accurately locate the semantic source of the non-culminating readings, and by identifying referentiality of the direct object as a new factor crucial to the problem.

Bull, Laura. "Men's experiences of couples counselling culminating in the decision to discontinue." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/37848.

Full text
Abstract:
Psychological help-seeking has historically been disproportionate between genders, with evidence to suggest that half as many men seek counselling services as women. The extent of physical and mental conditions impacting men as a result of their avoidance of health services places them and their families at enormous risk. When men attend counselling services, they are far more likely to discontinue prematurely in both individual and couples counselling. Further, researchers have voiced the absence of research exploring men’s experiences of counselling, particularly couples counselling, and the factors that promote a positive or negative experience. The purpose of this study is to add to the limited literature on men’s experiences of couples counselling through the use of phenomenological interviews. This research highlights the portions of participants’ experiences that contributed to their decision to discontinue, giving insight to the unique needs of these male participants in the counselling room and opening the doors for future research to determine the generalizability of these findings. Nine themes emerged from the interviews with five participants. These themes were: (1) Perceived counsellor effectiveness, (2) Counsellor bias, (3) Moving forward, (4) Getting derailed, (5) Readiness, (6) Feeling unseen, (7) Feeling unheard, (8) Discomfort with surroundings, (9) Partner openness. In addition, participants provided recommendations for counsellors working with men in the couples counselling field. These recommendations are included in the final section of the findings. This study offers deeper understanding of men’s experiences of couples counselling, and in particular, the experiences that contribute to the sense that counselling did not work. Based on these findings, implications for service providers and future research are outlined.

Clark, W. Andrew, and Craig A. Turner. "Market Simulation Programming As A Culminating Experience For Students Interested In Entrepreneurship And Pursuing An M.S. In Engineering Technology." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2009. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/2497.

Full text
Abstract:
Many of our students enrolled in our Master of Science in Technology program have expressed an interest in learning about entrepreneurship and the development and management of a technology driven company. Students interested in entrepreneurship can pursue a 12 credit concentration that includes classes in developing a cohesive marketing and technology strategy, comparing and contrasting technology strategies for companies within the same market niche, developing an entrepreneurial business plan and coursework in either small business management or entrepreneurial finance. One critical component of this concentration is the utilization of the Marketplace™ Venture Capital simulation game to provide students with real world management experience in running a technology driven company. Teams of students playing roles as CEO, Marketing Manager, Manufacturing Manager, Financial Manager and R and D Manager develop the technology and marketing strategies for their companies as they compete against each other in a global environment. After four quarters of operation, students are required to prepare and deliver a 15 minute presentation to venture capitalists detailing their marketing and technology strategies, performance to date and expectations in the market for the remaining two quarters in the game simulation. They are competing against the other teams for the venture capitalist’s money and must not only have a good presentation but also demonstrate conceptual understanding of what the financial and market data means. The roles of the venture capitalists are played by retired professionals in the community that have run businesses with revenues exceeding $50 M/year, have started new technology based ventures or have managed researchers in a commercial environment. We instruct the venture capitalists to play the role as tough managers who require data and not fluff before they part with their precious venture capital financing. VC and Technology business managers must negotiate on the purchase price for shares of their company with lesser performing companies giving up a greater share of their company in the negotiation. Students utilize techniques presented in the first two classes in their curriculum (Investigations in Technology and Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation) to develop their marketing and technology strategies. The students appreciate the fact that they are able to take risks and make mistakes in a simulation environment where financial disasters are made with fake money. After utilizing this simulation program for three years, we have found that non- traditional students who have been working in an engineering field typically perform better than the traditional graduate students who are entering their graduate program immediately after receiving their bachelor’s degree. Our experience is that all engineering technology students (regardless of when they enter the program) are weak in their comfort and understanding of financial data and that this is a weakness that we need to correct in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Masing, Anna Sulan. "From the jungle : Iban performance practice, migration and identity : a practice-based PhD based on four-years of research, culminating in this thesis and a performance piece, 'From the jungle', May 2012." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2013. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/678/.

Full text
Abstract:
This document provides an elaboration of the critical, contextual and methodological rationale for a practice‐based PhD research project undertaken at London Metropolitan University 2009-2013. This four‐year project was an exploration in identity, space and location. It looks at the transitions, journeys and stories of migrant women. Specifically this exploration has been developed through the language of the cultural practices of Iban women. The Iban are an indigenous group of people from Borneo, predominantly living within the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Significantly the Iban practices have migrated from the jungle, to urban areas, and globally, and inevitably the identity of these practices has developed as the locations have changed, much like the women performing them. My father is Iban and my mother white New Zealander, and I grew up in both Sarawak and New Zealand before coming to live in the UK in my 20s. My performance training has been within a Western context, both in New Zealand and the UK. This project has been a personal exploration, which has wider consequences in developing performance practice and understanding the discourses of home, belonging, migration and identity. This has led to questions around migrating Iban performance and cultural practices to a western contemporary context. These questions have been investigated through the cultural practices of the Iban pantun (chapter three), the Iban ngajat (chapter two), Iban weaving (chapter four) and the use of space in the Iban longhouse (chapter one). This project was an interdisciplinary investigation; in each chapter I pull together performance theory from western practitioners and post‐colonial feminist literature with the Iban performance practice. This project has asked the question: "Can Iban cultural and performance practices be ‘migrated’ to a contemporary western performance context in order to explore experiences of women’s migration?" My research question was central to the practice‐based research I conducted, the methodologies developed through practice as research, and are central to all the work covered in this thesis. Within this context the practice is submitted as an outcome alongside this written narrative. Additional details can be found on the website: www.fromthejungle.co.uk.

Boswell, John Bentley. "A history of the air bridge denial program in Peru: the evolution, errors, and fallout of a covert United States-Peruvian counternarcotics air interdiction program, culminating with the 2001 mistaken shootdown of a missionary plane over the Amazon jungle." Master's thesis, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12404/15345.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 1990s, the Governments of Peru and the United States established a counternarcotics air interdiction program called Air Bridge Denial over the Peruvian Amazon. During this program the United States Central Intelligence Agency conducted surveillance missions over Peru’s coca growing regions, and passed suspicious aircraft location data to the Peruvian Air Force, who would then intercept the suspected narcotrafficking aircraft and force them to land or be shot down. The program was interrupted in 2001 following the accidental shootdown of a missionary floatplane over Peru, which resulted in the deaths of two United States citizens. This thesis examines the development, operations, and fallout of Air Bridge Denial in Peru, including its patterns of errors, complexities and challenges such as binational interoperability, bilingual communications failures, neglect of mandatory protocols, and poor oversight. In examining the detailed history of Air Bridge Denial, this thesis strives to present lessons learned for the development and implementation of any similar programs in the future. Disclaimer: The views in this paper are strictly those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the official views of the U.S. Government, the Department of Defense, or any of its agencies, nor the Olmsted Foundation. This is in fact an admitted limitation to the study, as there may be additional government information, included classified archives, from both the U.S. and Peru that might provide greater detail and insight. The author does not know this to be a fact or not. The publicly available information at hand may at least help fill gaps in the historical academic record surrounding the program, and open the door for continued study on the topic.

Pleyel, Jessica Carolyn. "To(get)her: a culmination." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5602.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which my artistic practice is creating a space for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to share, gain catharsis, and spark discussions. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, I have often felt there was no space for me to voice the many emotions that come with my experience. After creating and sharing autobiographical work about my story, many women have shared their stories of survival with me. Through these many conversations, I knew that we needed to create a space to share these stories. I have created this space through the To(get)her project. To(get)her is a collaborative performance and installation in which women from a variety of backgrounds destroy and transform wax guns with kitchen and cosmetic tools such as waffle irons, hair dryers, high-heeled shoes, curling irons, and meat tenderizers. These wax guns act as a metaphor for the violence that happens to many women on a daily basis. One in three women will encounter domestic violence and one in five women will be raped in their lifetimes in the United States. Not only are many of our bodies attacked mentally, physically and sexually, but the government also stakes claims on our bodies. With 138 representatives and 22 senators voting against the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and many of those same politicians also voting against stricter gun regulations it is apparent that these politicians do not see it as problematic that women’s bodies are so often targets. Further, in the current political climate it is imperative that people in the United States understand the importance of VAWA, and that it is a necessary bill that will be up for reauthorization in 2018. There have been six iterations of the To(get)her project. Through these performances, over 75 self-identifying women have been a part of the project, sharing their stories and igniting discussion about violence against women. When women come together, their connections are empowering, fierce, sometimes gentle and always meaningful.

Baldwin, Robert Lee 1963. "George Whitefield Chadwick's "Tam O'Shanter": Culmination of a descriptive orchestral style." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282240.

Full text
Abstract:
The descriptive orchestral music of American composer George Whitefield Chadwick (1854-1931) follows a progression from the Symphonic Sketches (1895-1904) to Tam O'Shanter (1915). Chadwick incorporates French, Russian, and radical German musical ideas into his earlier conservative romantic approach, resulting in a new and individual style. Tam O'Shanter represents the culmination of this descriptive style. This study will attempt to identify traits and characteristics in Chadwick's descriptive orchestral music, and by doing so, will help conductors and other musicians identify works as they relate to his different style periods. The symphonic ballad Tam O'Shanter will be studied in depth to demonstrate the culmination of this style.

Leatherbarrow, Jane Florence. "'Culmination chromatic density' in the free organ fugues of J.S. Bach." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2018. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=239053.

Full text
Abstract:
The term 'Culmination chromatic density' (CCD) is devised for the thesis to describe perceived unusual chromatic harmony which occurs towards the end of a few of Bach's free organ fugues. The thesis seeks to determine the nature of the harmony, to establish if seventeenth and eighteenth-century theorists discuss fugue culmination harmony, and whether composers before Bach wrote fugues with unusual culmination harmony. After establishing an outline organ fugue chronology, historical music theory and fugues before Bach are examined for the purpose of identifying influences upon Bach's fugue culmination harmony. The main body of the thesis is an harmonic and structural analysis by chronology of thirty-six of Bach's fugues, individually and collectively. The analysis establishes fugue structure through tables of thematic entries, and the examination of thematic material, counterpoint, and tonal structure. The analysis also examines the accidentals, which are discussed and presented in graphs. The analysis of intervals gives detailed insight into the use of consonances and dissonances. Figured bass is used in music examples to show harmony and progressions. The analysis establishes that there is CCD in certain fugues of Bach, and that there are specific structural features, procedures and advanced compositional techniques associated with CCD. There is a clear link between incidences of CCD and fugue chronology. CCD is linked with fugue structure; and advanced fugues with CCD possess unique structures, procedures, and harmony. The analysis establishes that Bach uses background structures, an important additional compositional tool which is related to CCD. There is evidence of historical precedent in some aspects of CCD, both from music treatises, and in some fugues of antecedent French, German, and Italian composers. Areas for further research are suggested. Implications are that Bach uses previously undiscovered methods for fugue composition, and that there are potential changes to the established chronology.

Kruse, Stefan. "Structural evolution of the northern Thor–Odin Culmination, Monashee Complex southern Canadian Cordillera." Thesis, University of New Brunswick, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1882/941.

Full text
Abstract:
The Monashee Complex is a structural culmination which exposes rocks from the lowest stratigraphic levels of the Canadian Cordillera. The Monashee Complex is subdivided into two lesser structural culminations; the Frenchman Cap and Thor–Odin culminations. The lithostratigraphic succession of the Thor–Odin Culmination is completely transposed by penetrative isoclinal folds with amplitudes from microscopic (<1 mm) to regional (10’s km). Lower structural levels are occupied by Proterozoic gneisses and migmatites of the Monashee basement assemblage. These are infolded with overlying metasedimentary rocks of the Monashee cover assemblage, which are Proterozoic to possibly Paleozoic in age. The basement and cover assemblages were subsequently intruded by Eocene granitic pegmatite, aplite and lamprophyre dykes. Regional metamorphism of the basement and cover assemblages reached upper amphibolite to lower granulite facies. The northeastern portion of the Thor–Odin Culmination of the Monashee Complex contains a suite of structures and fabrics, which are classified into four sets, based on their interpreted kinematic significance. These are: 1) transposition related structures (DT); 2) open, upright folds (DO); 3) exhumation related structures (DE); and 4) brittle faults (DB). Each successive set of structures exerted a control on the geometry of the next set. The large-scale geometry of the culmination is an interference structure between DT folds, a DE arch and high-strain zones, and a DB brittle horst. Early, DT fold style varies from intrafolial isoclinal “mature” style folds to upright or inclined asymmetric “immature” folds. This continuum of fold styles, along with evidence of anticlockwise rotation (looking down a vertical axis toward the shear plane) of fold axes and lineations is interpreted as being a result of penetrative triclinic non-coaxial flow. DO upright, symmetrical folds overprint early structures and fabrics, but are only preserved at low structural levels in the culmination where the DE coaxial stretching overprint is weak. DE normal shear bands and boudins overprint all earlier structures. A complex high-strain zone, the Thor–Odin High-Strain Zone, outcrops at high structural levels and along the margins of the culmination. The Thor–Odin High- Strain Zone developed as a result of material moving away from the crest of the culmination, outwards toward the flanks. Eocene brittle faults (DB) and fractures within the Thor–Odin Culmination of the Monashee Complex are divisible into three distinct sets. Initial 340–010º trending strikeslip faults (Set 1) were locally overprinted and reactivated by normal faults with a 325– 020º trend (Set 2). A third set of 255–275º trending fractures (Set 3) are interpreted as conjugates to Set 1, reactivated as transfer faults to the Set 2 normal faults. Large regional faults weather recessively forming topographic lineaments that transect the Monashee Complex. The Victor Creek Fault defines one such lineament. Detailed mapping within the northern Thor–Odin Culmination, reveals piercement points (fold hinges) on the east side of the fault, which are not readily matched on the west side. The minimum displacement required on the Victor Creek Fault to down-drop the fold hinge below the level of exposure on the west side is 1370 m, assuming normal down-to-the west displacement. However, the geometry of the fault is consistent with a Set 1 dextral strike-slip fault. Matching the piercement points in the study area with possible equivalents to the north indicates 55–60 kms of dextral strike-slip displacement. The Monashee Reflection (MR) is a major crustal-scale, cross-cutting reflection appearing on two mutually perpendicular Lithoprobe seismic profiles in the southern Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera. It has previously been interpreted as the downplunge extension of an arched regional ductile thrust fault, the Monashee Décollement, and is described as separating the Monashee Complex from the overlying Selkirk Allochthon. Recent mapping demonstrates that this boundary is not a discrete ductile thrust, but rather transposed and gradational. Overprinting the transition zone is a complex, outward-dipping, normal, structure; the Thor−Odin High-Strain Zone. Three alternative 3-D geometric models have been developed for the MR in order to project the reflection to the surface. The favoured model correlates the surface trace of the Thor−Odin High-Strain Zone with MR. Normal shear sense kinematics are interpreted for the MR based on: 1) the overall geometry and asymptotic relationship between the MR and reflections in the hanging wall and footwall; 2) offset of metamorphic and geochronological gradients, consistent with an extensional zone, rather than with thrust fault interpretation and 3) the cross-cutting nature of the MR is consistent with normal structures throughout the region.

Al-Wardi, Mohammed. "Structural evolution of the Jebel Akhdar culmination and its implications for exhumation processes in the northern Oman Mountains." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21094/.

Full text
Abstract:
Many orogenic belts show evidence for coeval extension and compressional tectonics. Here I present new evidence for such activity during the tectonic evolution of the Oman Mountains, a Late Cretaceous orogenic system on the NE margin of the Arabian continent. The tectonic significance and implications of this discovery are discussed within the context of convergent plate boundary processes. During the Late Cretaceous the NE margin of the Arabian continent was overthrust by "exotic" sheets of oceanic and continental margin units (the Semail ophiolite allochthon). Some parts of this margin (Saih Hatat Massif) were deeply buried through subduction, to depths suitable for eclogite facies metamorphism, while other parts are unmetamorphosed (Jebel Akhdar Massif). Consequently an almost continuous metamorphic gradient is preserved, that creates an ideal setting with which to relate both shallow and deep-seated tectonic processes to orogenic development Current mapping and structural studies reveal that the extensional deformation that followed the obduction of the allochthons and concomitant partial subduction of the continental margin is very much more extensive than previously recognized and was synchronous with the folding of the culminations of the Oman orogen. The extensional deformation appears to be partitioned into two orthogonal structural styles: NNE-directed shearing and vertical thinning, together with a local NW -SE contraction manifested by lineation-parallel folds. In the lebel Akhdar massif the NNE-shear deformation is extensively developed, forming steep faults and bedding-parallel detachments that extend stratigraphy with a top-to-the-NNE sense of shearing. No evidence of ongoing NW-SE contraction is seen, and hence deformation is apparently plane strain. In contrast, lebel Nakhal is arked with widespread deformation of both NNE-shearing and the concomitant NW -SE contraction, indicating non-plane strain. In Saih Ratat NNE-shearing is penetrative, with a component of orthogonal contractjon. Coeval orthogonal layer contraction, layer-thinning and elongation describe the bulk constrictional 3D strain. While this might be indicative of regional transtension, large-scale strike-slip faults active during the extension, as predicted by general transtensional models, are not evident. Consequently it is inferred that the constriction was the result of laterally-varying crustal extension, where the top NNE extension was locally combined with left-lateral shearing. For the Nakhal anticline, where the direction of the finite elongation axis is N030E, the orientation of sinistral transtension deformation is NNE-SSW. Exhumation of the metamorphic series ccurred beneath a carapace of extending allochthons which defined an elongate pip of material that returned to shallow crustal levels. There is an imbalance however, between the net extension and the possible contraction within the Arabian continent which requires deformation within a volume of net-divergent tectonics. Thus crustal extension continued after the end of convergent tectonics in the region.

Lynn, Helen Beatrice. "Structural controls on subsurface fluid migration through thrust sheets of the Stewart Peak culmination, northern Salt River Range, Wyoming." Thesis, Montana State University, 2012. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2012/lynn/LynnH1212.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Stewart Peak culmination is a duplex fault zone of the Absaroka thrust sheet, which is part of the Sevier fold-and-thrust belt in western Wyoming. Duplex structures can serve as subsurface oil, gas and carbon dioxide (CO â‚‚) traps. The culmination lies east and up-dip from naturally occurring CO â‚‚ traps in Idaho and west of the Moxa arch in Wyoming, another naturally occurring CO â‚‚ trap and potential target for CO â‚‚ sequestration. The culmination has been uplifted and breached by erosion, exposing traps and reservoir rocks analogous to proximal subsurface structures, thus allowing for outcrop-scale investigation of the elements that comprise a complex trap and an analysis of the relative timing of faulting, fracturing, fluid migration and structurally-controlled diagenesis. The purpose of this study was to characterize structural elements of the Stewart Peak culmination that controlled fluid flow. Field-based analyses of fractures, fault damage zones and breccia pipes were conducted in order to assess how these structures affected fluid flow. Rocks were sampled in order to elucidate the diagenetic characteristics of alteration associated with episodes of fluid migration and document the qualities of reservoir rocks. Faulting has led to extensive fracturing and brecciation of rocks in the culmination. The geometry of faults and fracture sets initially controlled fluid migration pathways. Brecciated fault zones of large-displacement thrusts served as focused fluid conduits. Fracturing also facilitated fluid flow, locally enhancing porosity and permeability. The protracted history of deformation in the culmination helped maintain fluid flow pathways through fractures and fault zones. Fault zones and fractures display complex diagenetic alteration as a result of multiple eposodes of deformation and fluid migration. Sub-vertical fracture swarms and breccia bodies dissect some fault zones and represent discrete vertical fluid pathways through which CO â‚‚-charged hydrothermal fluids were focused. Hydrothermal brines may have enhanced structurally-controlled fluid migration pathways through interrelated processes of effervescence-induced brecciation and dolomitization. Faulting, fracturing, brecciation and diagenetic alteration generally enhanced the quality of reservoir rocks and increased the hydraulic connectivity within the culmination. The enhanced porosity and permeability of the Madison Limestone and Bighorn Dolomite indicate that these reservoirs have good potential for CO â‚‚ sequestration.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the applicability of culminations theory in a guerrilla context. In battle, a crucial factor is to assess who has superior strength. Culmination theory is a central concept in conventional warfare, could the same theory support the analysis of guerrilla warfare?Previous research tends to focus on the results of guerrilla wars. By using the concept of culmination this research attempts to determine, by assessing the battle, whether the guerrilla reached the point of culmination and by that evaluate the applicability of culmination theory in guerrilla warfare. The research design consists of a two-case study to analyse the LTTE and Daesh and thereby highlight culmination theory’s applicability on guerrillas. Written documents are used as sources of empirical data for the two-case study. The result of the survey shows that LTTE and Daesh reached their defensive point of culmination and that culmination theory is generalizable in a similar guerrilla context.

Abstract:

The purpose with this essay is to find out if Rommel used what we today call manoeuvre warfare? I choose this subject because I’m interested in infantry tactics and the breakthrough Rommel did during the twelfth battle of Kobarid. A much smaller unit made a large unit surrender. The two methods I will use are description and case study because those two methods are good to work with when to describe what happen during a battle on a specific place on the battlefield. I’ve reed different books about the twelfth battle in Kobarid and doctrines about manoeuvre warfare in the Swedish armed forces. Finally I’ve analysed the facts and drawn conclusions however Rommel used manoeuvre warfare during the battle or not.

The result is that Rommel used manoeuvre warfare at the battle of Kobarid but I don’t that think Rommel knew the words like we knew them today. Words like mission tactics or manoeuvre warfare.

The ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs serve as a mechanism for creating consistency in American engineering programs. A significant element of these criteria is the design component, which specifies the need for a culminating design experience at the conclusion of the undergraduate degree. Given the generality of the ABET criteria, educational institutions are granted some level of autonomy in their actual implementation of the design component. While many institutions have exploited this freedom to a positive end, others appear to have diverged significantly from the intended spirit of the criteria. This work chronicles implementation of the culminating design experience component in electrical and computer engineering programs at top universities across the United States. A customized classification system is employed to demonstrate each university's effectiveness in implementing the design component and its associated outcomes. The results of these classifications are used to illustrate shortcomings in current implementations as well as propose possible revisions to the criteria to prevent future problems.

By screening developmentally morphological mutants generated by the restriction enzyme-mediated integration (REMI) mutagenesis, we found a mutant that formed trails that lift the slug off substratum and with age could collect droplets of fluid along their length on bacterial lawn agar. The mutant cells were delayed to aggregate and had a defect in culmination (slugger mutant). The full-length gene was constructed from the plasmid rescued fragments and predicted to encode a membrane transporter, MtpA, containing fourteen transmembrane domains. The mtpA gene is single copy gene and the temporal expression is a very low level at vegetative stage, increases substantially about 12-16 hr and then decreases. In synergy experiments, they participated efficiently in fruiting bodies formation when developing along with wild-type cells, suggesting that MtpA affects the production or release the intracellular signal pathways. The act15::lacZ-marked mtpA- cells were excluded from the prestalk zone in slug stage and distributed over up and low cup at culmination stage, indicating that the mtpA- cells should have an inherent defect in the prestalk differentiation. The development of mtpA- cells was hypersensitive to the change of the environmental ammonia and propionate concentration but its aggregation-ability was slightly rescued by the azide. Disrupted mtpA gene leads to cytosolic acidification by FACS measurements. It is likely the reason to cause to delay to aggregate and over-sensitive to the environmental change. Knocked out mtpA gene in rapidly developing and sporogenous rdeC mutant HTY217 that lacks functional PKA regulatory and therefore has constitutive PKA catalytic activity, the phenotype of the double mutant HTY217/ mtpA- is partially like to the parental strain but is able to form spores. Our results indicate that MtpA plays as a regulator of the ammonia in the early aggregation via possibly regulating the intracellular pH and is required for the intercellular signal that controls the terminal differentiation of the prespore and prestalk cells via regulating the PKA activity.

Fritzson, Carolin. "The Logistical impact on Culmination : Operation Overlord - Strengthened or Delayed by the Logistics?" Thesis, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-3826.

Full text
Abstract:
The branch Logistics is often given lower priority during field exercises when combat units are supposed to be trained. In wars, conflicts and operations do the interest increase remarkably of being delivered ammunition, fuel and food. Without logistical support it is hard to advance on the scene, but is it even so hard that the lack of logistics can generate the own culmination? The purpose with this Bachelor’s thesis is to show the logistics importance during the planning and transaction phases for an operation. On June 6 1944, the Allied forces invaded Normandy, in order to defeat Hitler’s imperium and reach the end of the Second World War. The operation was called Overlord, and was both in the number of men and combat power, as well as, in a logistical manner an enormous achievement. In consideration of answering the research questions, the author has by literature studies analyzed operation Overlord and its impact on the culmination of the Second World War. Research questions: How does logistics affect the culminating point in warfare? What logistical maneuvers during Operation Overlord can be referred to reasons for the Second World War’s culmination point? The results manifests how the logistical maneuvers, like Mulberry Harbour, Red ball Express and PLUTO, caused a possibility to advance through Normandy, France and thereafter against Germany. Although that, it is hard to automatically say that innovations like these are the absolute reason for the culminating point. By using the factors in Mårtensson’s model, that is increasing or decreasing the speed towards the culmination, the analysis shows that logistics has a huge impact on the outcome.

Ellett, Matthew Hayden. "The cornered bear : the August 2008 war in Georgia as the culmination of Russia’s western security dilemma." 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/19649.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2008 Russia surprised the West by going to war with Georgia. While several analyses have pointed to separate actions by NATO and the West as having influenced the 2008 war, this paper endeavors to show that the combined actions of the West and NATO since the fall of the Soviet Union created a security dilemma for Russia. Because the West refused to properly acknowledge and address Russia’s dilemma, the West inadvertently created the conditions which led to the culmination of Russia’s security dilemma in the form of an invasion of Georgia. Russia’s war with Georgia was less an attempt to protect Russian citizens and prevent atrocities as it was a rebuttal of Western actions. This thesis examines the security dilemma and cooperation theories as presented by Dr. Robert Jervis, and looks specifically at Western-Russian relations relating to three spheres: NATO expansion and Western marginalization of Russia, Western unilateral and extra-U.N. military aggression, and Western anti-ballistic missile defense initiatives and programs. Western actions relating to these three spheres created the conditions for the war, and specifics within the Caucasus region and relating to separatist conflicts drove Russia to deem a war with Georgia a politically safe rebuttal to the West. This paper also examines continued Western refusal to acknowledge Russia’s dilemma and developing conditions, as they relate to the three spheres of NATO expansion, unilateral military action and missile defenses, which could potentially lead to further conflict between Russia and the West.

Ally, Shabir. "The Culmination of Tradition-based Tafsīr: The Qurʼān Exegesis al-Durr al-manthūr of al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505)." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/35061.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī’s al-Durr al-manthūr fi-l-tafsīr bi-l-ma’thur (The scattered pearls of tradition-based exegesis), hereinafter al-Durr. In the present study, the distinctiveness of al-Durr becomes evident in comparison with the tafsīrs of al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923) and Ibn Kathīr (d. 774/1373). Al-Suyūṭī surpassed these exegetes by relying entirely on ḥadīth (tradition). Al-Suyūṭī rarely offers a comment of his own. Thus, in terms of its formal features, al-Durr is the culmination of tradition-based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ma’thūr). This study also shows that al-Suyūṭī intended in al-Durr to subtly challenge the tradition-based hermeneutics of Ibn Taymīyah (d. 728/1328). According to Ibn Taymīyah, the true, unified, interpretation of the Qurʼān must be sought in the Qurʼān itself, in the traditions of Muḥammad, and in the exegeses of the earliest Muslims. Moreover, Ibn Taymīyah strongly denounced opinion-based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ra’y). By means of the traditions in al-Durr, al-Suyūṭī supports several of his views in contradistinction to those of Ibn Taymīyah. Al-Suyūṭī’s traditions support the following views. First, opinion-based exegesis is a valid supplement to tradition-based exegesis. Second, the early Muslim community was not quite unified. Third, the earliest Qur’ānic exegetes did not offer a unified exegesis of the Qur’ān. Fourth, Qur’ānic exegesis is necessarily polyvalent since Muslims accept a number of readings of the Qur’ān, and variant readings give rise to various interpretations. Al-Suyūṭī collected his traditions from a wide variety of sources some of which are now lost. Two major exegetes, al-Shawkānī (d. 1250/1834) and al-Ālūsī (d. 1270/1854), copied some of these traditions from al-Durr into their Qur’ān commentaries. In this way, al-Suyūṭī has succeeded in shedding new light on rare, neglected, and previously scattered traditions.
