Abstract:
Egyptian cults in the Roman religion and society took shape beyond de Nile region, and the area of the African Magreb was one of the territories where the Egyptian devotions had more influence. The commercial relations of the Roman provinces in Africa and especially of its coastal cities extended many of these cults of popular roots by regions with a strong previous culture, as in the area of Carthage. It is possible to approach to this religious panorama thanks to Archaeology, particularly trough the nineteenth century academic and scientific expeditions carried out by French institutions and archeologist; at the time, France exercised the colonial control over Tunisia. The study of the archaeological pieces they recovered, many of them housed in Noth-African and French museums, allows the reconstruction of the evolution of this social and religious context in the case of the god Serapis and the Serapeum of Carthage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn 1918, Faith Tabernacle Congregation was established in southern colonial Ghana. This Philadelphia-based church flourished in the context of colonialism, cocoa, and witchcraft, spreading rapidly after the 1918–19 influenza pandemic. In this context, several healing cults also proliferated, but Faith Tabernacle was particularly successful because the church offered its members spiritual, social, and legal advantages. The church's leadership was typically comprised of young Christian capitalist men, whose literacy and letter writing enabled the establishment of an American church without any missionaries present. By 1926, when Faith Tabernacle began its decline, at least 177 branches had formed in southern Ghana, extending into Togo and Côte d'Ivoire, with over 4,400 members.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The cult of ancestors is a fundamental element of the culture and religions of African peoples. Intimately present among the living, and participating in the events o the group' life, the "accomplished dead"-or ancestors- are the true warrants of their community's balance and well-being. They are unavoidable intermediaries between the world of humans and that of the invisible. .

Pleuvret, Catherine. Paris 6, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA066228.

Full text
Abstract:

Paris, EHESS, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993EHES0053.

Full text
Abstract:
The case of the agglomeration of bassar (northern togo) is food for thought concerning relations between two types of phenomena, having to do with the social or symbolic spheres. Opposed to the traditional analyses who reduce these relations to a mere legitimation of the social positions by the religious structures, the present analysis seeks to show how the symbolic sphere acts on the social relations through the medium of the constraints of thought. For this thesis, informations of a wide variety of sources are used : historical data, political system, rituals, etc

Botchi, Gomido Jean-Marie. Paris 4, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA040124.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is based upon my own experience among the ajatado community of southe benin-togo between 1975-1988. I did in fact ascertain that the social actors of that area called upon their cultural serpent, whenever they had to face afflictions. So my first step was to find out how this serpent was worshipped. Thus, i distinguished between the cult of the material serpent. My second step was to elucidate the cultural symbolism of the ajatado serpent. As for its import, this cultural symbolism concerns life, prosperity and immortality. As for its function, it is closely linked to the social praxis. Thus, it has a heavy potential and an undeniable importance in the ajatado imaginative life. Lastly, i could not but mention the judeochristological serpent. For, in the ajatado community, the social actors converted constantly hear about the figures and the symbolism of that biblical serpent. From the ajatado serpent to the biblical serpent, the sole aim of man is salvation. To achieve it, the solution for the ajatado converted seems to be that, of inserting the Christian faith into the ajatado culture. Thus, they could practice the cult of him who, arisen from earth like the bronze serpent, heals and saves men

In this study barium hexaferrite was (general formulae BaFe12O19) was synthesized by the Pechini method under different conditions of heat treatment. Precursors like barium carbonate and iron nitrate were used. These magnetic ceramic, with magnetoplumbite type structure, are widely used as permanent magnet because of its excellent magnetic properties, such as: high Curie temperature, good magnetic anisotropy, high coercivity and corrosion resistance. The samples were characterized by thermal analysis (DTA and TG), X- ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) end Vibrating sample Magnetometer (VSM). The results confirm the expected phase, which was reinforced according to our analysis. A single phase powder at relatively high temperatures with particle sizes around 100 nm was obtained. The characteristic magnetic behavior one of the phases has been noted (probably superparamagnetic material), while another phase was identified as a ferrimagnetic material. The ferrimagnetic phase showed vortex configuration with two central and slightly inclined plateaus. In general, increase of heat treatment temperature and time, directly influenced the technological properties of the samples

In the classic set of unit operations of solid-liquid separation, sedimentation and filtration techniques stand out as critical processing steps for a broad spectrum of industrial activities. In this context, the proper knowledge of the properties and characteristics of the particulate systems directly involved represents an important aspect for the safe and efficient design of equipment and processes. Over the past 20 years, several methodologies were developed to study such phenomena, resulting in a huge library of sedimentation and filtration models available in the literature. This work presents a study based on the use of a particle-scale numerical simulation technique called Discrete Element Method (DEM), to describe the deposition of particulate solids in liquids. Tridimensional simulations of the sedimentation and filtration processes were carried out in a previously known flow field, as a way to test the applicability of the code and its capacity to virtually describe such processes. Cake properties, such as thickness, porosity and permeability were quantified over time and compared qualitatively and quantitatively with literature data. The effects of operational conditions, solids and liquid properties on the particulate model?s response were also investigated through a series of controlled numerical tests. The packing fraction values obtained in this work for the sedimentation process, when compared to the values found in the literature on similar conditions, showed a satisfactory agreement, with deviations smaller than 12% for all the points assessed

Abstract: The conceptual, linguistic and political choices presented on the pages of this dissertation are the outcome of different meetings occurred during an ethnographic research at an Early Childhood Center in Vinhedo ¿ SP, conducted in the period that goes from August to December 2012. This research involves three-year-old tiny young children and their teachers. It aims to bring up the violence of capitalist social hierarchization based on the process of racialization on the construction of peer cultures. From the theoretical assumptions of Childhood Sociology, and studies of Social Sciences related to Racial Relationships in Brazil, I sought to understand the macro influence of this process on the construction of stereotypes related to tiny young black children. In addition to that, I analyze how this process of racialization contributes to the withdrawal of both culture and black history from the pedagogies present in childhood education, and to the exclusion of black girls and black boys from a social field that is permissible to experiences related to the acceptance of their own body; of their ancestry. The results point out to the presence of a pedagogy of "whiteness" that relies on an educational model with purposes of reproduction of prejudices against tiny young black children in order to achieve the maintenance of the privileges of white tiny young children. The results also indicate how these tiny young black children perceive racism installed on the pedagogical postures adopted by childhood educational centers, and make it explicit, through different languages, the non-acceptance of the fitting framework that pins them down in a subordinate position in society

Continuous Synthesis by Solution Combustion was employed in this work aiming to obtain tin dioxide nanostructured. Basically, a precursor solution is prepared and then be atomized and sprayed into the flame, where its combustion occurs, leading to the formation of particles. This is a recent technique that shows an enormous potential in oxides deposition, mainly by the low cost of equipment and precursors employed. The tin dioxide (SnO2) nanostructured has been widely used in various applications, especially as gas sensors and varistors. In the case of sensors based on semiconducting ceramics, where surface reactions are responsible for the detection of gases, the importance of surface area and particle size is even greater. The preference for a nanostructured material is based on its significant increase in surface area compared to conventional microcrystalline powders and small particle size, which may benefit certain properties such as high electrical conductivity, high thermal stability, mechanical and chemical. In this work, were employed as precursor solution tin chloride dehydrate diluted in anhydrous ethyl alcohol. Were utilized molar ratio chloride/solvent of 0,75 with the purpose of investigate its influence in the microstructure of produced powder. The solution precursor flux was 3 mL/min. Analysis with X-ray diffraction appointed that a solution precursor with molar ratio chloride/solvent of 0,75 leads to crystalline powder with single phase and all peaks are attributed to phase SnO2. Parameters as distance from the flame with atomizer distance from the capture system with the pilot, molar ratio and solution flux doesn t affect the presence of tin dioxide in the produced powder. In the characterization of the obtained powder techniques were used as thermogravimetric (TGA) and thermodiferential analysis (DTA), particle size by laser diffraction (GDL), crystallographic analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), specific surface area (BET) and electrical conductivity analysis. The techniques used revealed that the SnO2 exhibits behavior of a semiconductor material, and a potentially promising material for application as varistor and sensor systems for gas

Abstract:
Scotland’s population history since the middle of the nineteenth century has too often been written either at a national level or as if what happened in a particular area was unique. There has been too much focus on losses, failings, or crises, and too little on successes and improvements in people’s experiences of life. There were multiple demographic Scotlands, linked to the diversity of the country’s economy, geography, and cultures, and many successes as well as failures. The book sets Scottish demography in a wider British and Western European framework and shows how patterns and trends from the past influence the present and the future demography of the country. Scotland’s outstandingly detailed published reports, many hitherto hardly used, are briefly described

Abstract:
This volume focuses on questions of Greek and non-Greek cultural interaction in the eastern Mediterranean and the ancient Near East during a broadly defined Hellenistic period from 400 BCE–250 CE. While recent historiographical emphasis on the non-Greek cultures of the eastern Mediterranean is a critical methodological advancement, this volume re-examines the presence of Greek cultural elements in these areas. The regions discussed—Asia Minor, Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia—were quite different from one another; so, too, were the cross-cultural interactions we can observe in each case. Nevertheless, overarching questions that unite these local phenomena are addressed by leading scholars in their individual contributions. These questions are at the heart of this volume: Why did the non-Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean engage so closely with Greek cultural forms and political and cultural practices? How did this engagement translate into the daily lives of the non-Greek cultures of Asia Minor, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Egypt? Local engagement differed from region to region, but some elements, such as local forms of the polis and writing in the Greek language, were attractive for many of the non-Greek communities from fourth-century Anatolia to second-century Babylon. The Greek empires and the Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean, too, were transformed by these local interpretations. The presence of adapted, changed, and locally interpreted Greek elements deeply entrenched in each community’s culture are for us the many forms of Hellenisms, but it is ultimately these categories, too, that this volume wishes to examine.

Abstract:
Cultures are defined in many ways and may mean different things. Culture consists of meanings, symbols, and ways of living that are shared by a group of people and within consists of microidentities which are related to gender, religion, sexual orientation, and many other factors. Cultures influence our world view, child rearing, responses to distress, explanatory models, and pathways into professional care. Increasingly, clinicians in medicine, but in psychiatry in particular, have become aware of the way that culture affects precipitating distress, its perpetuation, and prognosis. Cultures and society determine how healthcare is funded. Cultures are not confined to patients; health professionals also carry their own cultures related to professional values and training. Therefore it is important for healthcare professionals to be culturally competent, which reflects good clinical practice. In this volume, practical ways of assessing and managing patients are described, especially for those patients whose cultural background may be different from those of clinicians. It is critical to understand the impact of culture on individuals, their families, and their carers. Assessment using clinical tools needs to be culturally appropriate and sensitive too. Instruments for assessment need to be valid and culturally appropriate. Cultural formulations are helpful in ascertaining contributing and relieving factors. Engaging therapeutically and developing a therapeutic alliance is at the heart of successful patient outcomes. The impact of culture on presentation is described. Using medications in appropriate ways is explained, along with pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the reasons for the decline of the Maitreya School. It suffered first from a series of unfortunate historical happenstances: the devastation of World War II, Taixu’s untimely death in 1947, and the Communist revolution of 1949. Under the Communists on the Mainland, there was no space for further development or propagation of the cult. Under the Nationalists on Taiwan, things were not as dire, but the cult suffered there too. Yinshun, Taixu’s most prominent follower, developed Taixu’s Maitreyan thought in ways that diffused its underlying values while making their radical roots explicit. Under martial law, this provided the pretext for rivals to bring Yinshun down, which had a chilling effect on potential proponents.

Abstract:
Inspired by research in anthropology and cognitive science that places analogical thinking at the center of human culture and cognition, this chapter focuses on the metaphors by which western Central Africans, particularly speakers of Kikongo, understood—and withstood—the horrors of the Middle Passage and New World enslavement. Canoe metaphors figured prominently in West Central Africa. So too did tropes making ontological connections between things designated by phonetic (near-) homonyms. Both types of analogies helped people explain their lineage origins (locating them in past migrations under duress), find cures for social ills, seal marriages and other alliances, and open liminal paths from suffering to plenitude in this world and in the afterlife. Based primarily on the author’s research in dictionaries of African languages, particularly Kikongo, and on Central African cults of affliction-fruition in Brazil’s 19th-century Southeast, the essay argues that strong shipmate bonding during the Atlantic crossing embodied these homeland metaphors.

Abstract:
The first Western translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Walter Y. Evans-Wentz (1927) played a central role for the emerging belief that experiences near death are prevalent in non-Western cultures too. Especially noteworthy is the Tibetan Buddhist description of “Clear Light of Pure Reality,” but also frightening experiences of consciousness in the afterlife realm, and the necessity of a “guide.” The chapter describes how Theosophical preconceptions led to a view that Tibetan Buddhism corroborates premortal and postmortal out-of-body experiences or rebirth doctrines. As such, it became highly influential for C.G. Jung and other scholars of the “psyche,” paranormal experiences, and religion, allowing them to argue for a transcultural dimension of experiences near death, and experiences after death.

AbstractThe chapter is about recovery in the sense of achieving a good quality of life as defined by what is important to (i.e. the values of) those concerned rather than by professional and service delivery priorities (Allott, P., What is mental health, illness and recovery, Ch 1. In: Ryan T, Pritchard J (eds) Good practice in adult mental health. Good practice series 10. Jessica Kingsley Publishers, London, 2004; Slade M., et al., World Psychiatry 13:12–20, 2014). The narrative is in the form of a dialogue between two people, both with extensive experience of severe long-term mental health issues. Unscripted and unedited the dialogue captures both the challenges and resources for recovery arising from the different cultures in which the authors have found themselves. Their experiences reinforce the well-established but too often unheeded conclusion that key drivers of recovery are factors such as companionship, having somewhere to live, and control over what happens to you (including what if any medication may be helpful).

Abstract:
AbstractAs demonstrated in the previous chapters, land in Morocco is mainly used for farming and pastoral activities. These activities are more vulnerable to the consequences of increased precipitation and drought due to climate change. Various modern and traditional adaptation strategies – among which migration to urban centres or abroad – have been used to deal with environmental changes. This suggests that a large share of inhabitants are in some way aware of the changes in their natural environment and already familiar with adaptation strategies (Schilling et al. 2012; Mertz et al. 2009). However, in most studies, researchers focusing on this topic do not relate this to people’s overall views on environmental change and the adaptation strategies employed by the actors involved. When they do, they hardly focus on people living in the MENA region (Nielsen and D’haen 2014); West-Africa (Mertz et al. 2010, 2012; Afifi 2011; De Longueville et al. 2020); DR Congo (Bele et al. 2014; Few et al. 2017); and India (Howe et al. 2014). The only exception is the study on Morocco by Nguyen and Wodon (2014); Wodon et al. 2014). Hence, it is unclear how these environmental changes are actually perceived and how they influence the ways people view and respond to them, and (actively) develop adaptation strategies to deal with such changes (cf. Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-61390-7_6). This is especially important since perceptions of environmental changes and the risks associated with them vary across and within cultures (Vedwan 2006; Mertz et al. 2009, 2010; Leclerc et al. 2013). Furthermore, there is a perception bias with regard to the perceived environmental changes, as some types of changes, such as rainfall patterns, are more easily noted and compared to others, such as temperature changes (Howe et al. 2014; Few et al. 2017; De Longueville et al. 2020; Bele et al. 2014). Additionally, people mainly remark on changes when these apply to their livelihood activities (Bele et al. 2014; Howe et al. 2014; Wodon et al. 2014; De Longueville et al. 2020). In current research and policymaking, ongoing debates on environmental migration and displacement too frequently assume that everyone perceives environmental change in a similar fashion. This becomes problematic in debates on environmental migration or climate refugees when environmental changes are assumed to automatically result in some kind of (forced) migration, leaving little space for the views and agency of the people involved (Stern 2000; McLeman and Gemenne 2018; Khare and Khare 2006; Rigby 2016).

Abstract:
The main harmful disease of white and narrow-leafed lupin is anthracnose. High effective fungicides should to be used to protect its crops. Under field conditions the fungicide Zan-tara (1.5 l/ha) showed the high productivity (91.3%) against this disease. The fungicide is effective against fusaria, sclerotinia and botrytis too. Its use allows protect crops of culti-vated lupin species against diseases’ complex and significantly decrease yield losses.

Abstract:
Microgravity (MG) during space flight has been known to cause adverse effect on bone quality. Data collected from studies done on spaceflights show loss of 1–1.6% bone mineral density (BMD) per space-flight-month[1]. Most BMD has been recorded in load-bearing bones [2]. Some studies has considered using drugs and different growth factors to maintain bone mass in microgravity conditions but it can be too expensive to maintain over longer periods of time besides the systematic effects of such treatments [3]. Considering the effects of microgravity are partially attributed to lack of mechanical force on bone tissue, which alters gene expression, reduction in transcription factors and growth factors. Furthermore, lack of gravity effects cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, cytoskeleton polymerization and cellular morphology [4, 5]. Thus to reverse these adverse effects on bone physiology, it is important to provide cells with mechanical stimulus which can provide essential mechanical signal for cells to counter the effects of microgravity. Ultrasound acoustic vibrations can be readily applied in, in vivo and human studies and has shown anabolic effects on osteopenic bone tissue [6]. Furthermore, ultrasound is a non-invasive and more target specific treatment relative to cyclic strain and vibration. The objective of this study is to see effects of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on disused bone model and osteogenic activity of osteoblast cells cultures in simulated microgravity. This will help us understand that effects of ultrasound on microgravity and mechanotransduction pathway responsible for anabolic effect on bone cells.

Abstract:
The development of Inherently Safe Design, Corrosion and Integrity Management as a genuine combined engineering discipline has evolved largely over the past 30 years or so, with significant acceleration and urgency after the Piper Alpha offshore disaster in the North Sea in 1988. The concepts and practices have matured with many significant changes implemented across the world offshore regions. Even after more than 20 years, the emanating point for sweeping changes has been the Cullen Report and the UK North Sea industry. This paper offers an interpretation of the early and later lessons learned, as applicable and relevant to deepwater and by analogy arctic offshore assets and pipelines, whereupon conditions are harsh and accessibility very limited. The particular focus is on the so called ‘secondary tier’ points related to materials performance, corrosion, and integrity; the understanding monitoring and control of such matters and failures can be critical in reconstituting integrity, if pragmatic life cycle safety and performance are to be recognized. It is argued that modes of failure such as those related to loss of material properties, corrosion, erosion, environmental cracking, and other degradation phenomena, have become far more critical in deepwater and arctic projects. This is mainly due to repair, retrofit, or re-habilitation being invariably far too costly if not virtually impossible in practice. The authors’ use career wide experiences post Piper Alpha to highlight the worries and concerns offering rational pragmatic solutions, illustrated through related case histories. Conclusions and recommendations are based on predictions, interpretations, and viable solutions. Additionally, industry disconnects between technology transfer under this tutelage are identified. The new methods of ‘concurrent design’ and inherently safe design are discussed, and in the context of mechanical, materials, and corrosion engineering advances are related to the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Failure Indicators (KFIs), for best life cycle integrity and knowledge management. This approach is considered very important for deepwater and arctic assets where ‘surprise’ failures, environmental and political ‘snafus’ are not really an option, and thus more purposeful design investment at CAPEX is vital rather than at OPEX, and the ‘gray’ zone between the two cost centers must be therefore be better reconciled, perhaps it is argued through the concept of an extended CAPEX.
