Abstract:
Vast- quantities of lignocellulosic materials, representing potential substrates for the cultivation of speciality mushrooms, are produced annually in South Africa. A number of these materials are derived as waste products of the timber and agricultural industries, e.g. Maranti (Shorea spp.) and Port Jackson Willow (Acacia longifolia) respectively. The screening of various wood-degrading fungi, which are cultivated worldwide for their production of speciality mushrooms, indicated that under the environmental conditions considered, certain species were adapted to cultivation on these lignocellu

Abstract:
The involvement of pseudomonads In the process of basidiome initiation of the cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus was investigated. Pseudomonads used throughout the study were identified and Pseudomonas putida was shown to be responsible for initiating basidiome morphogenesis. The prodigious morphogenetical capabilities of a single P. putida and P. tolaasii colony was demonstrated and the production of rough colonial forms in peat casing soil was observed. Rough colonial forms of P. putida were found to be capable of promoting basidiome initiation. Cells of the rough colonial forms were bett

Abstract:
Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) remains the major cause of failure of retinal detachment surgery. Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells have been suggested to play a major role in the pathogenesis of PVR. Numerous studies have employed pharmacological means to modulate cellular activities in attempts to inhibit the process. Recent attempts using adjunctive therapy during PVR surgery that consisted of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and low molecular weight heparin showed some promise in preventing PVR but the concern is that prolonged 5-FU treatment may have a toxic effect. Abstract:
'Drippy gill', a serious bacterial disease of cultivated mushrooms, was investigated. The causal organism, Pseudomonas agarici, causes profuse ooze from the gills of affected sporocarps and intrahyphal transmission was suspected. However, the majority of bacteria were shown to occur extrahyphally with only occasional intrahyphal presence. Enzymatic and developed gold labelling techniques showed P. agarici was essentially unable to actively penetrate fungal hyphae. In the presence of P. agaric; cells, the extrahyphal matrix was actively degraded as were the outer fungal wall layers. P. agarici

Abstract:
The UK mushroom industry, worth £170m/annum suffered an epidemic of cobweb disease during the mid 1990’s. Within 12 months this hitherto mildly problematic disease became a serious economic pest - nationwide, to the extent that businesses were threatened with closure. Cobweb disease persists to this day. A diverse collection of Cladobotryum isolates were collected from within the British mushroom industry and from other sources around the world and were compared with regards to several factors. This study focuses on commercial mushroom production, a relatively new economic activity in Swaziland that seeks to assist rural-based small-scale farmers to diversify and improve their economic independence and livelihoods. The mushroom programme is in line with the National Development Strategy, which, among its major objectives, aims to address povertyrelated challenges through the promotion of non-conventional high-value agricultural commodities that have not been explored by local farmers despite having a relatively high consumer demand in local and international markets. Accordingly, an ethnobotanical survey was carried out among the 850 inhabitants of the village of Castelmezzano, in central Lucania, which is located in the inland southern Italy. The purpose of this research is two fold. First to improve pest management of the sciarid fly (Diptera: Sciaridae) by better defining its relation to mushroom production. Secondly, to explore some of the factors and aspects of the biology of the fly which may increase room to room dispersal rates of adults. The effects of different generations of production room Lycoriella mali Fitch infestations and seasons on yield were explored.
