Abstract:
Viabilidade Celular. Antimicrobianos.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTShewanella loihicastrain PV-4 harbors both a functional denitrification (NO3−→N2) and a respiratory ammonification (NO3−→NH4+) pathway. Batch and chemostat experiments revealed that NO2−affects pathway selection and the formation of reduced products. Strain PV-4 cells grown with NO2−as the sole electron acceptor produced exclusively NH4+. With NO3−as the electron acceptor, denitrification predominated and N2O accounted for ∼90% of reduced products in the presence of acetylene. Chemostat experiments demonstrated that the NO2−:NO3−ratio affected the distribution of reduced products, and respiratory ammonification dominated at high NO2−:NO3−ratios, whereas low NO2−:NO3−ratios favored denitrification. The NO2−:NO3−ratios affectednirKtranscript abundance, a measure of denitrification activity, in the chemostat experiments, and cells grown at a NO2−:NO3−ratio of 3 had ∼37-fold fewernirKtranscripts per cell than cells grown with NO3−as the sole electron acceptor. In contrast, the transcription ofnrfA, implicated in NO2−-to-NH4+reduction, remained statistically unchanged under continuous cultivation conditions at NO2−:NO3−ratios below 3. At NO2−:NO3−ratios above 3, bothnirKandnrfAtranscript numbers decreased and the chemostat culture washed out, presumably due to NO2−toxicity. These findings implicate NO2−as a relevant modulator of NO3−fate inS. loihicastrain PV-4, and, by extension, suggest that NO2−is a relevant determinant for N retention (i.e., ammonification) versus N loss and greenhouse gas emission (i.e., denitrification).

Abstract:
Macrophages and certain tumor cell lines can be induced to synthesize nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or cytokines. In the present study, we have found that culture medium collected after 24 h from unstimulated rat mesangial cells (MC) contains 6.3 +/- 1.2 microM of NO3-/NO2- (the degradation products of NO). These levels were significantly increased when MC were incubated with LPS (10 micrograms/ml) for 24 h (23.9 +/- 4.1, P less than 0.05). The specific inhibitor of NO synthesis, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) completely inhibited LPS-stimulated production of NO3-/NO2-, confirming that the NO3-/NO2- was derived from NO within the MC. Recent studies suggest that endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) produced by vascular endothelium is also NO, and we have previously shown that both EDRF and NO stimulate increases in MC guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP). Thus we sought to determine whether NO synthesized by the MC could affect cGMP levels within the same cells. After 24-h incubation with LPS (10 micrograms/ml), intracellular cGMP level within the MC was 706.3 +/- 197 (SE) compared with 40.5 +/- 7 fmol/micrograms protein in control MC incubated in media alone (P less than 0.01). The changes in cGMP in response to LPS were inhibited by greater than 90% by L-NMMA. Similar to LPS, incubation of MC with the cytokine gamma-interferon also increased NO3-/NO2- in the culture media and increased cGMP levels within MC. The induction of NO synthesis within MC and the concomitant stimulation of MC cGMP may be important in the modulation of the effects of endotoxemia, as well as inflammation, within the glomerulus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACTCold atmospheric pressure plasma has been intensively studied due to growing interest in biomedical applications. For example, it has been revealed that the plasma-irradiated cell culture medium (PAM: Plasma Activated Medium) shows antitumor effect as well as the direct plasma treatment. Long-lived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrite (NO2-), and nitrate (NO3-), are considered as a main product in PAM. Therefore, investigation of the production characteristics of RONS in PAM with different experimental parameters is important. Here, we focused on humidification of feed gas (argon or helium) and effect of gap between the nozzle of the plasma jet and liquid surface. As a result, H2O2 concentration was increased by humidification of both feed gases. However, the concentration of NO2- and NO3- was decreased by the humidification of helium. In addition, the remarkable effect of the humidification on H2O2 production was observed when the plasma jet was in contact with the liquid surface.

Abstract:
The author examines the genesis of Japanese culture on the example of cultural and communicative formulas (CCF), which are defined as the simplest, stable, high-frequency units of culture used at all levels of social and cultural life. The article demonstrates that CCF, being a combination of signs, compactly represent a culture in its similarity and difference with other cultures and allow establishing a dialogue of cultures with a minimum of attracted data; they provide communication through verbal forms of language, gestures, styles, etc. - through all cultural forms that can be translated into signs of this culture, sufficient to have a minimal idea of it. The article examines the CCF on the example of compressed verbal forms belonging to folk speech, which include proverbs and sayings, "winged words", precedent phrases that are part of the civilizational worldview. The article presents the material in the framework of the discipline "Culture of Japan".

Abstract:
The paper is devoted to the analysis of determinants and sources of culture. If earlier certain cultural values have not changed for many centuries, determining the existence of more than one generation, now several cultural eras alternate throughout one life. The transition to a post-industrial society leads to a transformation in the spiritual sphere and the emergence of mass culture. It is shown that the starting point for the philosophical reflection of mass culture should be beyond the consideration of this phenomenon only as a phenomenon of artistic life of "people of mass culture" and the definition of its conditionality from the development of culture of society as a whole.

Abstract:
This article considers the earliest evidence of complex societies in sub-Saharan Africa. The evidence derives from two archaeological entities located in Nigeria, West Africa: the Gajiganna Culture of the Chad Basin and the Nok Culture of Central Nigeria. Studies of both cultures, carried out by the author’s team during the last years, indicate a significant cultural change during the 1st millennium BC. The change concerns social, economic, and technological aspects, described and discussed for each of the two mentioned cases. It is supposed that the change was a nucleus of social complexity that triggered further developments up to the great West African empires emerging from the end of the 1st millennium AD onwards.

Abstract:
This research\'s objective is to identify the connection between the access to culture, the pedagogical process of young people\'s formation and their communitarian insertion. In order to do so, this study was based in the experience of young people who have participated in formations at Culture Points, institutions that were benefited by the Programa Nacional de Cultura, Educação e Cidadania - Cultura Viva (National Culture, Education and Citizenship Program Living Culture) and that implemented the ação Agente Cultura Viva (Living Culture Agent). This program is situated in the Brazilian culture public scene from 2003 to 2008, when there was strong debate on defining policies for promoting the diversity of cultural expressions. We base the analysis in this research in the understanding that cultural citizenship and the right to culture are prerequisites to the plurality of cultural creation. It is in this context of interculturality that the culture mediator agents take on relevant roles for the development of cultural action, since they are subjects that circulate through different spaces, transit through various contexts and participate on diverse initiatives. The educative practice of the young people studied consisted in a problematizing and organizing action of their cultural experience that fosters young peoples choices regarding their work and expressing their identity. The field work was carried out in 2007 and 2008 and assembled interviews with 17 young men and women who participated in the formation of ação Cultura Viva in two Culture Points of the East Area of São Paulo. It is possible to identify recurrent themes in the young peoples accounts that reveal the significance of experimenting different aesthetic languages, intergenerational living experiences and shared community life that influenced their formation process. These actions stimulated the widening of the public space for cultural enjoyment and creating sociability, that boosts the collective and youthful work of creating. From a theoretical point of view, this study was oriented by the Paulo Freires category of cultural action dialoguing with Teixeira Coelho approaches. The study of the right to culture and of cultural policy was based on the reading legal instruments, norms and international declarations on the theme. The analysis of the interviews was founded on the notion of mediators developed by François Dubet for understanding the role young cultural agents played.

Traditional popular culture in Brazil is understood as a diversity of cultural practices linked to folk, traditional, afro-Brazilian and indigenous people. Since de 1990s, performance practices of this universe are transiting in musical and performance circuits that are constituted by cultural centers, institutions and, since the 2000’s, by festivals of popular and traditional cultures known as encontros de culturas populares e tradicionais. These encontros are culture festivals and also places for discussions on cultural policies and issues that impact traditional people and their communities. Thus, this thesis explores the specificities and characteristics of this contemporary circuit for traditional popular culture, with focus on these festivals of popular and traditional culture. Thereby, we seek to investigate the context of emergence of the encontros, their main characteristics and the dialogue they establish with cultural policies. The research was done through fieldwork in three editions (in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017) of the Encontro de Culturas Tradicionais da Chapada dos Veadeiros, which takes place in the village of São Jorge (Alto Paraíso-GO); the 2015 editions of the Encontro dos Povos do Grande Sertão Veredas (Chapada Gaúcha-MG) and of the Encontro de Culturas Populares e Tradicionais (Serra Talhada-PE); through the digital survey about other similar events in Brazil; and through interviews with producers and participants of the mentioned events. The investigation demonstrated that the encontros are product of the interest for traditional popular culture by young university students, artists and musicians in the 1990s, followed by the later articulation of these social actors with public institutions and policies – which led to the elaboration of specific cultural policies to the traditional popular culture. In the context of public policies, the encontros are seen as cultural policy actions, since they are understood as places for diffusion, safeguard and appreciation of traditional popular culture in a format of musical and dance presentations. As a place for traditional popular culture performance, these festivals develop techniques of sound production and stage architecture in dialogue with the music industry. The investigation also points that the masters of this traditions, who are invited to present their practices at the festivals, negotiate and mediate their performance seeking recognition, financial return and visibility for themselves and their social collectives. In conclusion, the study on the encontros showed that they are emblematic of the contemporary circuit of traditional popular culture of Brazil, which has similarities to the experience of the folklore movement organized in the 1950s due to the support both received from the public government. Despite the similarities with the folklore movement, the encontros have their particularities, such as a greater dialogue with the music industry and new discourses and social actors. Thus, it is possible to speak of a new circuit for Brazilian traditional popular culture, which emerges in the last decades.

Abstract:
This work analyses the historiography which has studied the formation of African-American cultures and the cultural exchange between Africans and Euro-Americans, sustaining that it has been characterized by a contradictory coexistence of universalistic and particularistic presuppositions about the nature of culture. These contradictions can already be observed in Franz Boass Anthropological culturalism, which moves between two definitions of culture on the one hand, as an organic and stable spirit and, on the other hand, as a historical and dynamic aggregate of customs and ideas , indicating permanence and transformation as simultaneous aspects of cultural contact. Melville Herskovits was grounded on Boass ideas and inherited these contradictions when he studied African-American cultures, representing them simultaneously as an acculturation, focusing a discontinuous relation with the past, and as a preservation of africanisms, stressing a continuous relation with African cultures. These difficulties have unfolded themselves up to the contemporary debate about the concept of creolization and Mintz and Prices work, which describes African-American cultures focusing cultural creativity and the survival of African structures at the same time. Authors of the so-called afrocentric perspective have tried to solve this impasse by minimizing transformations and stressing continuity with the past. By doing so, they have intensified the dualism implicit on the particularistic arguments of previous analyses. Another tradition of studies about cultural exchange in colonial societies including authors such as Gilberto Freyre, Fernando Ortiz and others associated to post-colonial thought has developed a different conceptual model, which focuses on the ambivalences and inversions that can be observed on the affective dimensions of cultural contacts. These authors have interpreted cultural exchange through a dialectical logic, deconstructing dualistic thoughts, embracing the self-contradictory nature of the fenomena, and thus indicating a theorical alternative to the models inherited from anthropological culturalism.

The empirical corpus is a set of rhythms: sússia, catira, drum, roda and congo. The choise was motivated because they have cultural reference in the State. The goal was identify the Tocantins Drums group formation and appropriate. For this purpose was achieved, it was proposed specifically: understand the importance of the relationship between culture and communication and subaltern culture and mass culture; identify which group's proposal and how the rhythms are worked; understand how to constitute the identities of the group, to identify the elements and belonging of the project participants; verify that the more traditional groups are recognized in the representation of the Drums of Tocantins and realize what the differences between them. The assumptions were that participants in the group Drums of Tocantins developed from a traditional style, but incorporating elements of mass culture, its own forms and styles of cultural expression and acquired a positive stance in relation to the rhythms and music critics as massive , which could result in the construction of their identity. After the conclusion of the proposed research, it was found that not exacly those factors constitute the identity of the group, but a greater bond, the social inclusion.

Abstract:
Inquiries had been carried out with submerged fermentation of Rhizopus arrhizus for production of biomass and copolymers chitin and chitosan, using the culture in synthetic medium for Mucoralean and corn steep liquor, as alternative substratum. Abstract:
Postcards, way of communication of the last century, gained popularity and was items for collectors. Focusing on images of cities, production of postcards was filled with a symbolic power of its forms, its own language that iconic semiology helps us to understand. In this sense, cultural geography, concerned with function and place of culture in production of space, is the conceptual basis of this work, especially the reinterpretation of the concept of landscape which is connected to traditions of German romanticism. Therefore, the object of this study is postcards which represented nature and the city of Rio de Janeiro during the period between 1900 and 1935. This work also intends to interpret and understand symbolic constructions of the image of Rio de Janeiro, from the reading of landscapes of this city which are presented in those postcards. Thus, in the analysis of signs, messages connected to ideas of tropical paradise and modern city were also analyzed. Both are interrelating and contribute to construction of the representation of Cidade Maravilhosa (The Marvelous City).

Abstract:
This thesis studies how culture organizes itself to counter the threat of industrial, commercial, global and totalist hegemony with a cultural and communicative counterhegemonic media resistance. The object of the study is Catalan popular music over the 2003-2018 period in a postmodern time frame of political crisis, digital culture, postindustrial communication and progressive independence from institutions. This corpus was researched through the analysis of four instances occupying different spaces in music's industrial value chain: the band Txarango, the dynamization projects of les Cases de la Música, the Enderrock team and the Catalan Concert Venues Association. The chosen methodology combines qualitative and quantitative techniques and relies on a comprehensive highly dialogical and interdisciplinary process setting different theories and perspectives in opposition. Communication, political sciences and cultural studies and etnomusicology are the three thematic focuses of research. The thesis's foremost contributions are three. Ingredients are provided to define a plural third cultural sector, characterized by its micro size, legal and organizational diversity, civil initiative, a vocation for solidarity and community, non-profit nature, mixed funding and pluralistic economic practices. One would locate this third cultual space in a hybrid cultural paradigm found between state and market. The existence of a non-commercial culture is likewise asserted. It emanates from a civil perspective with a vocation for activism and social change. Its organizational model is largely horizontal and highly networked, as local and community ecosystems are its frames of reference for action. Such a phenomenon may foster regional specialization, combining cultural production and a specific symbolic territorial framework, facilitating the flow of symbolic counterhegemonic contents in a musical ecosystem merging coaches, authors, producers, distributors, organizers and consumers. Lastly the thesis proves that digital technology allows for a more interdisciplinary and media-based culture making media resistance possible. Coupled with progressive values and a commitment to social change, a renew cultural resistance emerges that is media-based, independent of mediators and intermediaries, rooted in the DIY tradition, crossmedia, normalizing multidisciplinary and all-encompassing work (360 action), and based on a narrative justifying the very existence of each project socially and politically.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we examine the role of knowledge processes in the form of local practice, research, innovation and education in agroecology transformations. Knowledge and power are intimately linked; the questions of ‘what knowledge’ and ‘whose knowledge’ is valued are vitally important. We review the informal (outside of institutions) and formal knowledge processes that have been found to support agroecology. These affirm and enable the knowledge systems of agricultural producers, especially those of women and youth. We further discuss how the combination of scientific knowledge with local and traditional knowledge is important in agroecology transformations. Unfortunately, mainstream knowledge systems often disable agroecology because they privilege outside and top-down processes of knowledge transfer that invalidate local, farmer and indigenous knowledges.

Abstract:
From a business perspective, the political and economic effectiveness of the United States in the global market-place will depend on individual abilities to communicate with people from other cultures. Most multinational corporations have one individual from one culture managing employees from other cultures. This has led to conflict, law-suits, and reduced productivity. To date, US business people sent overseas have not fared well compared to their counterparts from Europe and Asia, primarily because of cultural conflicts. The future success of American business, therefore, is its ability to interact with other cultures and to understand the orientations of these individuals.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this report is to provide an understanding of cultural diversity in today’s global economy and to understand what shapes our identities and what influences our behavior. Background: Culture is the way of functioning in today’s world and it refers to the shared language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and material objects that are passed down from one generation to the next. Cultural diversity helps individuals recognize and respect the stewpot of today’s world and promoting cultural diversity and cultural competency helps individuals define and respect the diversity that encompasses today. Cultural competence also helps individuals embrace values and cultural nuances that are not necessarily akin to the one’s the individual possesses. Individuals interact with others to build bridges to trust, respect, and understanding across cultures. Furthermore, diversity makes the world a more interesting place to live, as people from diverse backgrounds contribute language, new ways of thinking, new knowledge, and different experiences. Methodology: A non-systematic literature review by way of reviewing articles that were found in many of major databases under the terms “Diversity in the workplace” since the year 2010 was conducted. Findings: This study identified major findings that would help individuals shape the diversity encountered and provides an avenue toward unity.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cell suspension culture methods based on the generation of microgravity environment are widely used in regenerative medicine for (1) the production of native-like three-dimensional (3D) cell aggregates and engineered tissues [1,2,3], for (2) low cost scalable cell expansion and long-term cell viability maintenance [4,5], and for (3) guiding differentiation of stem cells (SCs) [6]. The generation of a microgravity environment for 3D cell cultures, mimicking the native environment, promotes spatial freedom, cell growth, cell-cell interaction and improves mass transfer and cell exposure to nutrients. Nowadays, microgravity cell cultures are obtained by using stirred or rotating bioreactors, but both devices suffer from limitations: stirring bioreactors generate non-physiological shear stresses, which could damage cultured cells, interfere with SC pluripotency, and limit reproducibility of the culture process; rotating bioreactors are expensive devices due to the complex technological solutions adopted for obtaining rotation [5].

Abstract:
Language and cultural shifts are the major causes of endangerment of any community, which begins from minor switching of practices and verbal repertoires and ends with a whole change of community, and finally culminates in the community losing its own identity. Language shift usually takes place in a bilingual or multilingual speech community. It is a social phenomenon, whereby one language replaces another in a given society due to underlying changes in the composition and aspirations of the society. This process transitions from speaking the old to the new language. This is not fully a structural change caused by the dynamics of the old language as a system. The new language is adopted as a result of contact with another language community. The term language shift excludes language change which can be seen as an evolution, and hence the transition from older to newer forms of the same language. Contact between two or more cultures often leads to different sociological processes such as acculturation, cultural change, cultural genocide, and cultural shift. Cultural shift occurs when a community gives up its own socio-cultural practices like customs, rituals and traditional beliefs, and is characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems. It differs from the process of cultural change in which a community’s culture can evolve independently. Shifts may take place at the level of an individual speaker who gradually forgets or shifts to another language and consequently this language spreads to an entire community. This phenomenon can be seen among the Aranadans, a primitive tribal community found mainly in the Malappuram district and in other Northern districts such as Kasargode and Kannur of Kerala, owing to their irreverence towards the preservation of their own language and culture. The socio-ecological, psychological and educational factors impact their language and cultural shifts. This paper illustrates and clarifies the reasons for the language and cultural shifts of the Aranadan tribal community.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A characteristic trait of the global society is the introduction of the idea of multi-culturalness into all areas of human life. Therefore, general cultural competencies shall include such a constituent as multi-cultural competency of personality to enable efficient performance in situations of inter-ethnic communication. The set problem has been tackled by all social institutions, however, the central role in that regard is the teaching community, which has a strong influence on the content of young people’s consciousness and behaviour. In this regard, it is important to update the problem of shaping the multicultural competence of university lecturers, which is the purpose of this study. To achieve the set objective, several intercomplementary research methods and techniques were applied: the theoretical analysis of scientific literature, observations, questionnaires, a content-analysis method, testing. A study of 200 teachers showed that in the minds of teachers, knowledge regarding the specifics of a multicultural environment, the image of a representative of another culture and inter-ethnic interactions are presented at the everyday level, are formed spontaneously based on their own experience, which requires the creation of special conditions for their further development. The content-analysis has yielded that markers used during defining a multi-cultural environment often include such semantic constructions as ‘various cultures’ and ‘several cultures’. A study of the characteristics of communicative tolerance showed that most teachers have a high level of tolerance manifested in various situations of interpersonal relations, whereas a low level was not detected.

Abstract:
Heparin binds to smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. It inhibits the proliferation of the smooth muscle cells and modulates the growth of endothelial cells. Fibroblasts which represent an other cell type belonging to the vascular wall could also have their growth modified by heparin. We have at first, demonstrated that 125I unfractionated heparin bigds to cultured human skin fibroblasts with a Kd of 1.16 10 M.A low molecular weight heparin fraction (PK 10169) competed (50 %)with I unfractionated heparin, but at aless extent than cold unfractionated heparin(90%).As it has been reported with endothelial and smooth muscle cells, about 30% of the bound unfractionated heparin was internalized bythe fibroblasts. Heparin alone at the concentration ranges from 0 to 10-5M has no effect on fibroblast proliferation measured by the H thymidine uptake. When the cellproliferation was induced by pure PDGF, heparin potentiated markedly the fibroblast growth. The effgct started at 10-8 M heparinand reached a plateau from 10-6 M to 10-5 M. Similar stimulationwas observed when the growth was induced by FGF or EGF. Low molecular weight heparin enhanced the fibroblast proliferation induced by PDGF but at a less extent than unfractionated heparin, chondroltin sulfate has no effect. When added during the cell culture growth withhuman serum (5%), unfractionated heparin increased by 48 the cell proliferation as measured bycell counting at the 6th day of the culture. PDGF did not modify the heparin binding on fibroblast cultures either at 4°C or 37°C and did not alter the process of heparin internalization. JDGF binding to the cultured fibroblast (Kd 10.1 ± 3.4 10-10 M)was not modified by the presence of heparin when studied at 4°C.In conclusion : i) cultured human fibroblasts bind and internalize heparin, ii) heparinand heparin fraction stimulate the fibroblastgrowth induced by PDGF, iii) since the binding of PDGF is not modified by bound heparin, the mechanism of stimulation remains unknown.

Abstract:

Kelly, Luke. Lessons Learned on Cultural Heritage Protection in Conflict and Protracted Crisis. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.068.

Abstract:
This rapid review examines evidence on the lessons learned from initiatives aimed at embedding better understanding of cultural heritage protection within international monitoring, reporting and response efforts in conflict and protracted crisis. The report uses the terms cultural property and cultural heritage interchangeably. Since the signing of the Hague Treaty in 1954, there has bee a shift from 'cultural property' to 'cultural heritage'. Culture is seen less as 'property' and more in terms of 'ways of life'. However, in much of the literature and for the purposes of this review, cultural property and cultural heritage are used interchangeably. Tangible and intangible cultural heritage incorporates many things, from buildings of globally recognised aesthetic and historic value to places or practices important to a particular community or group. Heritage protection can be supported through a number of frameworks international humanitarian law, human rights law, and peacebuilding, in addition to being supported through networks of the cultural and heritage professions. The report briefly outlines some of the main international legal instruments and approaches involved in cultural heritage protection in section 2. Cultural heritage protection is carried out by national cultural heritage professionals, international bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as citizens. States and intergovernmental organisations may support cultural heritage protection, either bilaterally or by supporting international organisations. The armed forces may also include the protection of cultural heritage in some operations in line with their obligations under international law. In the third section, this report outlines broad lessons on the institutional capacity and politics underpinning cultural protection work (e.g. the strength of legal protections; institutional mandates; production and deployment of knowledge; networks of interested parties); the different approaches were taken; the efficacy of different approaches; and the interface between international and local approaches to heritage protection.

Abstract:
This paper argues that many pedagogical reform efforts falter because they fail to consider the cultural context of teacher and student behavior. Little guidance exists on how to adapt teaching practices to be compatible with culturally influenced behaviors and beliefs. We present evidence from three studies conducted as part of a large basic education program in Tanzania showing that some teaching activities are less effective or not well implemented because of culturally influenced behaviors in the classroom, namely children’s lack of confidence to speak up in class; a commitment to togetherness, fairness, and cooperation; avoidance of embarrassment; and age-graded authority. We propose ways teaching activities can be adapted to take these behaviors into account while still adhering to fundamental principles of effective learning, including student participation in their own learning, teaching at the right level, and monitoring students as a basis for adjusting instruction. Such adaptations may be made most effective by engaging teachers in co-creation of teaching activities.

Abstract:
In this blog piece Craig Willis investigates the contribution of European Structural and Investment Funds projects in the period between 2007-2013 and 2014-2020, in order to ascertain direct and indirect links to the four Celtic languages, following the separation of cultural funds from the ESIF into Creative Europe and Erasmus Plus from 2007. He shows that, given that the speakers of such languages often reside in economically peripheral areas (at least in higher percentage terms), their livelihoods and everyday culture in the traditional speaking areas (even for non-speakers) are affected by availability of structural funds.

Saillant, Eric, Jason Lemus, and James Franks. Culture of Lobotes surinamensis (Tripletail). Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18785/ose.001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, is a pelagic fish found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of all oceans. Tripletails are often associated with floating debris and make frequent incursions in bays and estuaries where they are targeted by recreational fishermen. In Mississippi waters the species is typically present during the late spring and summer season that also correspond to the period of sexual maturation and spawning (Brown-Peterson and Franks 2001). Tripletail is appreciated as a gamefish but is also prized for its flesh of superior quality. The fast growth rate of juveniles in captivity documented by Franks et al. (2001) and the excellent quality of Tripletail flesh both contribute to the potential of this species for marine aquaculture. In addition, the production of cultured juveniles would be precious to develop a better understanding of the biology, early life history and habitat use of Tripletail larvae and juveniles, a topic largely undocumented to date, through experimental releases and controlled studies. The culture of tripletail thus supports the Tidelands Trust Fund Program through improved conservation of natural resources, potential enhancement of fisheries productivity and potential development of a new economic activity on the Gulf coast producing tripletail via aquaculture. The Objective of this project was to initiate development of methods and techniques needed to spawn captive held tripletail broodfish and raise their offspring to evaluate their growth and development in captivity. In this report we will present the results of studies aiming to develop methods and protocols for captive spawning of tripletail and the first data obtained on the early development of tripletail larvae. A major issue that was encountered with tripletail broodstock development during the project lied in the difficulties associated with identifying the sex of adults caught in the wild and candidates for being incorporated in mating sets for spawning. This issue was addressed during the course of the project by examining the potential of a non-lethal method of hormonal sexing. The results of these preliminary investigations are presented in the third part of this report. All protocols used in the project were determined with the guidance of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM IACUC protocol number 10100108).
