Abstract:
The European responses to the inter-war years crisis were marked by the emergence of fascist and corporatist movements and regimes, combined with the creation of cultural and political networks of the radical right. Their ability to express ultra-nationalist, organicistic, palingenetic communitarian trends, radically hostile to socialist egalitarianism and liberal individualism, aiming at a national, hierarchical, collective new order, posed the ultimate authoritarian threat to European democracy. This book investigates cultural genealogies as well a as national and transnational geographies of such regimes, movements and cultures: for their transversal political nature, they provide a privileged ground for new perspectives in the inter-war crisis of Western culture, and for questioning their legacies to postwar world.

Abstract:
The New England Watch and Ward Society provides a new window into the history of the Protestant establishment’s prominent role in late nineteenth-century public life and its confrontation with modernity, commercial culture, and cultural pluralism in early twentieth-century America. Elite liberal Protestants, typically considered progressive, urbane, and tolerant, established the Watch and Ward Society in 1878 to suppress obscene literature, including Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. These self-appointed custodians of Victorian culture enjoyed widespread support from many of New England’s most renowned ministers, distinguished college presidents, respected social reformers, and wealthy philanthropists. In the 1880s, the Watch and Ward Society expanded its efforts to regulate public morality by attacking gambling and prostitution. The society not only expressed late nineteenth-century Victorian American values about what constituted “good literature,” sexual morality, and public duty but also embodied Protestants’ efforts to promote these values in an increasing intellectually and culturally diverse society. By 1930, however, the Watch and Ward Society suffered a very public fall from grace. Following controversies over the suppression of H. L. Mencken’s American Mercury as well as popular novels, including Sinclair Lewis’s Elmer Gantry and D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, cultural modernists, civil libertarians, and publishers attacked the moral reform movement, ridiculing its leaders’ privileged backgrounds, social idealism, and religious commitments. Their critique reshaped the dynamics of Protestant moral reform activity as well as public discourse in subsequent decades. For more than a generation, however, the Watch and Ward Society expressed mainline Protestant attitudes toward literature, gambling, and sexuality.

Abstract:
Ever since the age of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, the Mediterranean has had a significant pull for Britons — including many painters and poets — who sought from it the inspiration, beauty, and fulfilment that evaded them at home. Referred to as ‘Magick Land’ by one traveller, dreams about the Mediterranean, and responses to it, went on to shape the culture of a nation. This book charts how a new sensibility arose from British engagement with the Mediterranean, ancient and modern. Ranging from Byron's poetry to Damien Hirst's installations, the book shows that while idealized visions and aspirations often met with disillusionment and frustration, the Mediterranean also offered a notably insular society the chance to enrich itself through an imagined world of colour, carnival, and sensual self-discovery.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how the growing culturally oriented divisions in and around punk peaked in the mid-1980s in culture wars that emerged simultaneously in societies across the First and Second Worlds. In the United States, the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) formed in Washington, DC, to combat profanity in music; in the United Kingdom, Crass faced obscenity charges; and governments of several Eastern European countries cracked down on punk and its offshoots, new wave and heavy metal. However, by the mid-1980s, a new coalition of forces began to form in opposition to the neoconservative reaction against punk at the beginning of the decade, defined by cultural openness, progressivism, and “coolness.” Punk thereby helped cement a political reorientation that cut across ideological and socioeconomic groupings in the East and West, realigning societies according to progressive versus conservative identities—categories that would continue to define politics long after the end of the Cold War era.
