Full text
Abstract:
In order for Japanese companies to move strategically towards sustainability, it is necessary to identify and understand the national and organizational factors that can hinder or facilitate this organizational shift. Literature reviews, workshops with a Japanese company, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted in order to identify these factors. The results showed that there are many common sustainability barriers between Japan and ‘western’ countries. In addition, there are some Distinctive Cultural Characteristics (DCCs) specific to Japan that have a significant impact on the success of an organization that wants to move towards sustainability. According to the findings, suggestions for sustainability practitioners are provided, which involve understanding the barriers and taking advantage of the DCCs in order to help the Japanese companies to move towards sustainability more effectively.

Henry, Veronica. "Mind the gap : academically successful African Caribbean heritage students, learning identities and the cultural assets mediating learning." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2015. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/618043/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study identified the factors that support African Caribbean heritage children in achieving academically. Additionally, it explored and developed an understanding of the interaction between identity and learning and it is hoped contributed to a deeper understanding of the concept of ‘blackness’ through the narrative accounts of African Caribbean heritage individuals’ interactions between their learning careers, identities and wider lives, including the cultural assets mediating learning. Studies of the school experiences and educational performances of African Caribbean heritage children, (boys in particular) have on the whole tended to attribute the rationales for underachievement to cultural factors such as Black masculinity and peer group pressure (Sewell 1997); Black families’ home environment (Driver 1982; Green 1985); structural constraints of school organisation; teacher racism and government policies (Gillborn 1997; Gillborn and Youdell 2000). This study points to the ways in which structural issues in the form of macro and micro-aggression impact African Caribbean heritage children’s academic attainment. A specific contribution of the study has been to address the gap in literature surrounding the academic achievement/underachievement of African Caribbean heritage individuals. The participants’ stories revealed that African Caribbean lives in Britain are not necessarily dysfunctional but are complex, challenging and rich, and should not be viewed simply as deficient but as having rich and useful cultural capital. This study recognises the intersectionality of Black people’s experiences as not only raced but also classed and gendered, both in oppressive structures and in their personification and enactment through the agency of personalities and actions. This complex interweaving of organisation and agency required a theoretical framework that was equally capable of examining the subtleties of these dynamics. As such, this study was enabled through an original hybridity of intersectionality, CRT and narrative analysis.

Mitsche, Nicole. "Digital destination promotion : understanding and maximizing the use of digital and cultural assets to enhance tourists' decision making and destination marketing strategies." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2016. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/7105/.

Full text
Abstract:
With the overarching research question “how Information and Communication Technologies can be used to support a destination in improving tourists’ information search and decision making through the use of its digital and cultural assets” this thesis connects the three themes of eTourism, destination marketing and heritage tourism through a user-centric approach and the application of innovative technologies. The eight papers provided utilise and investigate the application of technology to improve the effectiveness and promotion of destination marketing and destination marketing organisations whilst, at the same time, improving user experiences. Interdisciplinary research focuses on the opportunities provided by digital and cultural assets of destinations to enhance destination marketing efforts. This research recognises and discusses the importance and challenges of the commodification process of tangible and intangible heritage as part of the marketing process. Methodologies appropriate to each of the research purposes were applied and data was triangulated to improve understanding. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaires, web crawlers and log files enabling the research to draw on analytical methods such as correspondence and cluster analysis, as well as data envelopment analysis (DEA). Qualitative methods such as workshop cycles, observations, and interviews were used to provide rich narratives analysed through content analysis. The results from the eight papers enhance destination marketing efforts by providing a better understanding of user behaviour and preferences based on travel personalities, travel and search pattern. They provide a clearer representation of the technologies, digital assets and e-Services available, discussing web site content and effectiveness. Strategies and innovative ideas to improve the current utilisation of digital technologies are provided based on the outcomes of the studies presented. Furthermore, a reflection on the use of intangible cultural heritage assets within destination marketing supported through the use of technologies is explored to enhance opportunities for destination marketing. V The research presents innovative and new ways to a destination to create new meanings and unique selling points (USPs) through cultural heritage assets and user-centric technologies. It introduces an interpretative strategy within destination marketing, and ideas to make the tourists’ holiday choice process more engaging. It enhances the understanding of on-line destination presentation, enabling comparisons between providers and improving their competitiveness. The main contribution of this work is new and enhanced insights how to improve on-line destination presentation by understanding its current representation and users’ search and behaviour patterns online and during travelling. It provides examples for the usefulness of ICT and cultural heritage in order to improve destinations’ marketing efforts. It also adds to the debate of the application of technologies for heritage interpretation and the commodification of (local) cultural heritage assets for destination marketing and tourism purposes.

Abstract:
This study analyzes, the structure of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship program by utilizing mixed methods, and is being analyzed within the contextualized framework of the Cambodia’s Higher Education system as well as its relationship with the Erasmus Mundus scholarship program. Mixed approach has been employed for this study, combining both quantitative data to construct the social space, which acts as a backbone for interpretation, and qualitative data from interviewing the scholarship program coordinator and scholarship holders in order to investigate the recruitment process and the students’ perception respectively, presenting the macro-micro relationship that makes up the entirety of the scholarship program. Collectively inspected, the findings reveal a new contextualized result that contributes not only to the development of the Cambodia’s Higher Education, but also to its position and its students within the space of the scholarship program of Erasmus Mundus. Through the close inspection using interview method, the underlying complexity of the recruitment process of the scholarship program is illustrated, indicating a multi-layer hierarchy and multiple decision-making processes. There are also implications of oppositions between the properties of the students, signaling the diversified student body in the scholarship program. Prominent theme of the opposition in the space appears to be related to the colonial past of the Cambodia’s system as well as the differences between local and international experiences that the students possess. Students interviewed in the study, furthermore, reveal how they prepared themselves to apply for the scholarship program and to be successful candidate, which depicts their assets and strategies that can be derived from the constructed space. Unanimously the students show strong confidence and great insight of information which can be understood as the compatibilities between the recruiter of the scholarship program and the students’ assets. Finally, overall findings give a new perspective of the profile of the scholarship program within the Erasmus Mundus mobility scheme. It shows that while students are required to possess certain objectively set requirements, there are also exception cases that students who possessed lower amount of capitals can also be successful, provided that the conditions like the credentials of their degree from Cambodia, as well as minimum requirements to pass the university admission have been met, and their “motivation letter” is exceptionally well-written which shows the subjective side of the recruitment process.

Abstract:
The careless way some users Sector Education Center Library (BSCE) deal with material that is placed at their disposal highlight the urgent need to put in place a Heritage Education Program (PEP) with actions to raise awareness of users regarding the use of the acquis proposal arose because of the realization of a large number of damaged and missing even works. The Library System (SIB) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) available to the academic community stuff like books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters and DVDs, in addition to technological resources like internet and Journal Portal Capes that can be used in their activities teachers, students and technical-administrative. This material is relevant to user searches currently involved, but also for those prospective students or servers. We considered this research applied qualitative approach because the results of observations obtained through conceptual research, examples of applicability of Heritage Education and analysis of current legislation regarding the handling of public equity, can form a set of elements that provide knowledge to implement strategies to encourage the exercise of citizenship and the use of the library. Cultural or educational libraries and their functions were studied; concepts that guide the Heritage Education and public property; examples of applying local Heritage Education and abroad; harmful to the collection agents; legal aspects such as civil and criminal liability of the user; and diffusion methods in libraries, developing a Heritage Education Program that addresses educational and cultural activities, sensitizing staff and teachers, appropriate signage in the library and workshops for users, and thus strengthen the memory of the subject and appreciation of the university library.

Chavez, Margeaux Alana. "Desert in the Springs: Ethnography of a Food Desert." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4807.

Full text
Abstract:
"Food desert" commonly describes food insecure areas with few fresh food outlets. Though used in a number of sources, the definition of "food desert" remains largely undeveloped and research is often deficit oriented, failing to account for community assets that may exist within food deserts but are underutilized or under-supported. Using an assets-based, ethnographic approach, this study combines GIS and survey methodology with participant observation and qualitative interviews to assess the potential positive effect of urban agriculture on food accessibility in Sulphur Springs, a USDA identified urban food desert in Tampa, Florida. Ethnographic data suggest that within this neighborhood, residents are largely dissatisfied with the quality of goods and services provided by local food retailers and, in response, seek alternatives to local retail food options. GIS and food store survey results from this study suggest that urban agriculture has the potential to increase fresh food accessibility and availability. Qualitative interview data suggest that the most appropriate way to improve food accessibility in this particular community is through Community Supported Agriculture that fosters social connections, while increasing access to healthful, quality foods, and circulating money within the community.

Abstract:
Public policies for cultural assets in museums adopted in Brazil and Mexico are an example of how development models, institutional arrangements of public administration and the government of public policies reflect the changes that historically took place in the Latin American States. This dissertation focused on the assumption that the transformation of the \"little\" 19th-century liberal State (whose function was merely ensure private property and contracts) into the \"great\" 20th-century social State (whose responsibility is to provide a number of social services) virtually made it infeasible to implement the instrumental rationality advocated by Weber´s traditional bureaucratic administration and contributes to deepen the tax crisis in the Latin American States by the end of the 20th century. The investigation compared Brazil and Mexico through documental research and interviews with managers of national asset bodies, followed by an effort of bibliographical review which provided theoretical and methodological substance for the dissertation. Data was collected, treated and analyzed, which led to the conclusion that both countries went through similar processes of institutionalization of their museum policies, at different times, and the expansion of such policies is related, in the two cases, to the consolidation of national project that sought international affirmation and which affect the processes of urban enterpreneurship that paradoxically \"change culture into a commodity\". The increasing criticism by society to the inoperativeness of the bureaucratic model in providing responses to the demands for public services that are more and more complex made way to the managerial models of public administration in local political agendas in both countries. Inspired in the paradigms of business administration, the model was structured around the discourse that the private sector would have greater capacity to meet the social demands when compared to the public sector. However, the model, which promised to overcome the limitations and improve the quality of public services and policies in general, did not achieve the expected success and was partly abandoned in most Latin American countries, as was the case in Brazil. Countries experiencing moderate left- and left-wing governments were able to build an alternate agenda of development in the early 21st century, making room for the construction of and contention for new social values and the attempt to implement an alternate model of public administration called \"participative reorientation of public services\". Thus, together with the neo-developmental policies adopted in part of Latin America, whose main feature is the fact that they are a hybrid model, consisting of liberal and neoliberal traits, on one hand, and developmental social welfare on the other hand, gave rise to a public administration that is also hybrid. This model was characterized by the resume of the State playing the main role, by the emphasis on the building of public-policy systems, by the increase in the quality of the public services provided, by the radicalization of social participation, and by the highlight given to the functions and values that are exclusive of the public sector, focusing on accountability. Meanwhile, Mexico reinforced the country´s option for a neoliberal development model; however the managerial model of public administration was never fully implemented as the public policies of cultural assets in museums stagnated, even if with islands of excellence as in museums of international standard, implemented in a historical moment when the country relied on a developmental project.

Abstract:
The hypothesis put forward in this thesis is that tourism can be the agent for the sustainable conservation and development of the valuable legacy of colonial built heritage by capitalizing on its tangible and intangible assets. The key variable is the recognition of the intrinsic value of both iconic and non-iconic properties and sites that constitute the extrinsic value of the cultural attractions of the tourism destination. The research problem is concerned with assessing the impact of contemporary tourism development on these attractions and identifying the issues affecting preservation and realization of asset potential. The research aims to support the collaboration between tourism professionals and cultural heritage stakeholders committed to resolving issues and problems for the destination identified within the stages of the tourism destination's life cycle of evolution (Butler, 1980).

Abstract:
Our thesis aims to examine to what extent the dichotomy between nature and culture (which is a product of the modernitys scientificity) is reflected in the cultural policies of patrimonial protection, especially of intangible goods, such as knowledge, celebrations, forms of expression and places. In the 21th century, the understanding that there are things that belong to nature and others that belong to society is maintained and we can barely articulate both in only one understanding. We confirmed the existence of such understanding in our analysis of the public administration bodies experience in dealing with nature and culture, defining specific legislation on each subject and acting with the expectation of a whole protection. In particular, we have analyzed the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute IPHANs actions regarding the protection of intangible cultural assets. Our hypothesis is that, although the IPHAN has been gradually broadening its horizon in the treatment of the issue, it still continues to formulate guidelines that reaffirm the separation between nature and culture, material and immaterial, real and symbolic. In order to reach our goal, the used methodologies include bibliographic research in specialized literature, official documentary sources (in particular, registration dossiers), the conduction of interviews and the analyzes of some intangible cultural assets images. In this context, some considerations are proposed and concern the attempt to aggregate the existing elements in cultural practices, in order to overcome the dichotomy between nature and culture for achieving a more integrative way to face this issue. One of these considerations concerns the moment of the intangible asset registration and when it would be possible to request the involvement of other bodies, such as the Ministry of Environment, whose attribution is directly linked to the cultural heritage issue. Such a measure would allow the building of more holistic public policies, to be taken as a whole and that take into account the natural and cultural elements of the intangible cultural good. In addition, we consider the importance of extending IPHAN\'s legal competence, by allowing it to tread a path that respects and protects more effectively the symbolic and the real contained in cultural manifestation.

The following work addresses the editorial policies of Jorge Zahar, specifically from 2001 to 2014, discussing the challenges faced by this publishing house that has built the brand through the ideal of publishing books that remain on the market over time. The study presents its history, since the foundation as 'Zahar Editores', in the 1950s, describing the editorial proposals on the context of specific social and marketing situations. Some critical moments were highlighted, when both the editorial policies and the company's management structure were reassessed, resized, establishing a period of major changes. That said, this work aims to analyze different Zahar’s catalogs: one of the 1985 period - when the publisher house started to be managed by Jorge Zahar and his children - and the ones from 2001 to 2014, noticing the aspects of changes and similarities between all the catalogs and the editorial fund. The categories 'independent' and 'classical books' have been identified as strategic elements in the self-conception and external identification of the publishing house, pointing its perception of books as cultural assets, as well as the role of the editor as a cultural agent. The performance of Zahar has been challenging two types of diagnostics in the common sense and even in the academic literature. The first is that publishers need to invest in books that quickly reach high sales levels, even if they don’t last too long, in order to ensure profitability and presence in the market. The second is that, in general, small and medium publishing houses, still autonomous, tend to sell their copyrights to the largest and most capitalized companies, once they have to face the aggressive marketing policies of these organizations. The research findings suggest that Zahar has insisted on maintaining their self-identification as a publishing house of classical books, directing their editorial policies to the publication of materials that last longer, demonstrating that it is possible to follow their own path in terms of emphasizing the unique role the editor, marked by independence in choosing what, how, when and how many publications - and retaining its place in the market.

Abstract:
Considering the geographical setting of the Southern region of the U.S., which is mostly divided into two races, Black and White, this study is to examine human science-related major undergraduates’ cultural competence and attitude toward the intersectionality group, elderly immigrants. The data, a total of 444 human science related major undergraduates in Mississippi, were collected. Through the principal factor analysis, attitudes toward elderly immigrants were divided into three factors: discrimination, avoidance, and tolerance, and cultural competence was into attitude, awareness, and sensitivity factors. The further related data analysis is to be completed by spring 2020. Through the study, it is expected to increase awareness of the need for culturally competent programs to educate the students on diversity and help to prepare undergraduate students to meet societal demands related to the intersectional minority population in the future.

Abstract:
Corporations appear to be mesmerized by the revenue value of intellectual assets to the exclusion of other attributes thereof. Moreover, empirical evidence suggests that corporate lawyers share this perception, primarily conceptualizing of intellectual assets as a means of generating corporate wealth. This over-promotion of revenue value has wide ranging effects. Specifically, this example of willful blindness on the part of corporations and corporate lawyers is a potential stumbling block for the appropriate utilization of corporate intellectual assets as well as the development of intellectual property regimes and academic discourse. These negative effects stem directly from the misguided corporate perception of intellectual assets as primarily revenue value.

Calhau, Vera Mónica Tavares Vinhas. "Culture-independent methodologies to assess diversity and dynamics of Aeromonas communities." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/781.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Aeromonas are bacteria autochtonous in aquatic environments, and they constitute a serious problem in aquaculture systems because of their capability to cause disease in fishes. Aeromonads are also nowadays considered as emerging pathogens in humans. Disease outbreaks may be associated with the introduction of virulent Aeromonas strains that evolved in other niches, acquisition of virulence determinants in the same niche, or as a result of disequilibrium in the local Aeromonas community. Thus, it becomes essential the development of reliable and reproducible methods to routinely follow the dynamics of indigenous Aeromonas communities and to allow an accurate detection of alterations in their structure, anticipating potential risks. In this study 3 primer sets were designed to specifically amplify fragments of the genes gyrB, rpoD and sodB from Aeromonas. A PCR-DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) method based on such primers was established to obtain community specific profiles. Primers specificity was tested by using as template DNA from 27 Aeromonas strains belonging to 17 previously described species, and also from 13 strains from 11 non-target species. Specificity was also assessed in silico using the BLAST tool, by checking sequence matches against the GenBank database. Results obtained confirmed the specificity of all primer sets and only primer set RpoD failed to amplify from two Aeromonas strains. To determine the phylogenetic information contained in the amplified fragments, gyrB, rpoD and sodB sequences available in the GenBank database from Aeromonas species were downloaded and submitted to phylogenetic analyses. A phylogenetic analysis following the same procedures was performed using the PCR target fragments and trees were compared. The phylogenetic information contained in the target fragments was confirmed to be consistent. Primer sets were tested in total DNA from estuarine water samples. A DGGE assay was optimized to separate the PCR products. Community specific profiles were obtained from each sample, for each primer pair. Profiles were very complex and rather stable along the salinity gradient. Aeromonas communities varied essentially in a seasonal basis. Cloning and sequencing of the fragments obtained from environmental DNA confirmed the specificity of the primers and revealed that the dominant phylotypes affiliated with strains included in species common in aquatic environments such as A. alossacarophila, A. veronii e A. sobria. To our knowledge, this study presents the first attempt to optimize and validate Aeromonas-specific culture-independent methodologies. Results indicate that all the developed systems present several advantages and therefore constitute valuable tools to assess diversity and follow the dynamics of Aeromonas communities. The utilization of more than one set of primers may be useful for providing a more reliable and clear representation of the community. The developed methods may be adapted to apply in other types of samples, which may be important due to the wide distribution of aeromonads in the environment and to their pathogenic properties.

______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This paper aims to examine to what extent the predominance of the Code of Goodtone gave the tonic for the rules of etiquette and civility to be followed by layers "educated", in regard to dress up, to speak, finally, in the definition of social hierarchies and places. With the help of four stories of Machado de Assis, A Lady, Mrs. Benedita, The Pianist and Magdalena, we want to see the images of civility that were part of the imaginary society Fluminense cut the end of the nineteenth century. We meant to see how Machado de Assis sent to their readers images of civility and resignificada as was the same, building of an imaginary ideal model of civility, now Europe, seen by the Brazilian society nineteenth as the archetype of advanced society, sophisticated and luxury that deserved to be followed and copied, adapted to the existing way of life here.

Abstract:
The first research objective of this dissertation is to extend existing conceptualizations of intercultural communication competence to create a new theoretically grounded construct, the Rainbow Model of Intercultural Communication Competence. The second research objective of this dissertation is to utilize this foundation and assemble a new instrument, the 127-item Intercultural Communication Competence Inventory (ICCI). The ICCI consists of sub-scales to measure foreign language competence, non-verbal communication competence, perceptions of cultural distance, intercultural self-awareness, intercultural communication knowledge, intercultural communication skills, intercultural communication motivation, intercultural communication appropriateness, intercultural communication effectiveness, intercultural contextual relationships, and intercultural affinity. This tool is designed assist strategic international human resource management practitioners to find, select, and/or train the best possible candidates for international assignments in an efficient manner. To accomplish these goals, a quantitative research design has been adopted. In a pilot study and three subsequent studies data was collected between 2005 and 2006 when the ICCI was administered to students in 19 courses with clear intercultural education elements at eleven universities in four countries (New Zealand, Germany, United Arab Emirates, USA) to build four samples of students: self tests (N = 1014) and retests (N = 587), peer tests (N = 613) and retests (N = 529). The ICCI was used as a paper-pencil and an online questionnaire. Using this method is appropriate as it provides intercultural communication trainers with quantifiable results to differentiate candidates and to measure training effectiveness. This dissertation has produced several research findings. Each of the ICCI sub-scales is psychometrically scrutinized and results described in detail. In exploratory factor analyses most scales have supported their theoretical framework as described in the Rainbow Model of ICC. Most sub-scales show independence from a variety of biases, and demonstrate sensitivity to competence changes over time and differences between evaluators. Various hypothesized links between the scales could be verified. The entire ICCI demonstrated that, despite currently still insufficient sample sizes, its conceptual roots, the Rainbow Model of Intercultural Communication Competence, is recognizable in self and peer tests and retests. The implications of the findings of this dissertation are threefold: First, the Rainbow Model of Intercultural Communication Competence has received preliminary confirmation. Second, the ICCI has initially shown a tendency to be a practical and reliable tool for recruiting, selecting of, and conducting training needs assessments that facilitate intercultural communication training effectiveness evaluations for suitable candidates for international assignments. Third, ICCI sub-scales have demonstrated the potential to enhance selection and training efforts in a speedy and specific way to support resource-cognizant intercultural training. The reader, however, is cautioned that a variety of limitations of this study need to be acknowledged. Finally, numerous areas of future research are identified.

Abstract:
Young women occupy unprecedented space in contemporary society. Their professional ambitions, educational achievements, practices of cultural consumption, and participation in sport and leisure all offer evidence of a new position for young women. This thesis analyzes female snowboarders as exemplars of young women in contemporary society and popular physical culture. Many young women today play sport and engage in physical activity with a sense of enthusiasm and entitlement unknown to most of their mothers and grandmothers. Against this background the female snowboarder is an excellent barometer of the nature of contemporary youth and popular culture, of the changes in those cultures including the development of niche female cultural industries, and of the emerging opportunities available to middle-class women in Western society. Women's snowboarding, however, is a complicated and multidimensional phenomenon interwoven with numerous political, cultural, social and economic events and processes. In this thesis I set out to capture the complexity of female snowboarding by systematically contextualizing and interrogating the lived experiences of female boarders through drawing upon six critical social theoretical perspectives: Marxist political economy, post-Fordism, feminism, hegemonic masculinity, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of embodiment, and Foucauldian theorizing. In applying these theories, I select key concepts and engage them in conversations with my insider cultural knowledge of snowboarding, numerous periods of fieldwork, and an extensive base of artifacts and sources collected over five years. In this thesis I extend academic understandings of female youth culture via the case study of women in snowboarding, and offer a valuable critique of contemporary social theories used to explain many different social phenomena that involve tensions and power relationships between the genders. While no single theory or concept proved adequate to deal with the multidimensional phenomenon of the female boarder, each having its shortcomings and offering quite different insights, several reveal important commonalities in relation to some key concepts in critical sociology, viz, structure, agency, culture, the body and embodiment, gender and power. These commonalities, I argue, offer future directions for theorizing about, and advancing our understanding of, young women in popular physical culture.

In order to have such analysis, the miniseries Capitu, from Luiz Fernando Carvalho is studied, an adaptation from the romance Dom Casmurro, from Machado de Assis. The proximity between the TV director and author reveals esthetic innovations such in literature, as in audiovisual. Abstract:
The present investigation is an approach to brand value from a top-management perspective, asserting that a brand is not merely a commercial value portrayed by a product placed in a market; even less so, a public relations rhetoric avowing a political correctness, but rather a full-length ascribed patrimonial asset that conveys an organization’s cultural response to the societal issues within its activity-bound. In such, considering the brand as an intangible in-management attribute that is portrayed across the entire chain of productivity whilst influencing current and future innovation processes, in return. Operating under a new context paradigm, the brand becomes patrimony (overall value), beyond –and not excluding- (financial) equity. In all, a hypertext practical vision on the attributions of the brand to signify knowledge-based corporate culture responsibility, amidst identity acknowledgement, multi-stakeholders engagement and reputation’s risk management and anticipation. Focus of this research, sets forth to upgrade the brand as a significant element of business management, and not just of marketing, and shares guided contribution to the key tasks and tools currently at stake in the development of well-grounded corporate communications.

After a survey on the feast of the Holy Ghost, carried out in the city of Santa Cruz de Goiás, a small city in the interior of the State, it was possible to see the shaping of a figure who became both the theme and the object of this dissertation. Centering the discussion upon cultural assets, memory and identity, I identified and nominated a character who represents a new category: the NATIVE MANAGER. It is known that the activity carried out by this manager has always existed and that he has already been recognized by organizations such as UNESCO and IPHAN, even though they might have given him a different title. Cognizant of the rituals, with a view of his own, often times acrimonious and disparaging, of the society where he lived, the character did not possess political power which would give him status, but he exerted a specific kind of power that emanated from his acknowledged wisdom, albeit not an erudite or academic one. Cultural manifestations were kept alive because within the community there was this manager who recognized the importance of their cultural asset. His unchallenged leadership and charisma, along with the ability to administrate people and events made his actions possible. Within a simple and resourceless universe, deep in the hinterland, the manager promoted scenically elaborate feasts, commemorations and pageants, challenging congeneric activities held by the erudite city dwellers. I was able to see for myself these characteristics, bearing witness throughout more than 20 years, in this community, of the way in which he was respected and followed by everyone. The manager interpreted and analyzed not only the History, but also his own history, thereby preventing documents, music, rites and mores from becoming lost. The person who incorporated this character was Alberto da Paz. His life history has its origins in his slave ancestors and is still in the making as even blind, he persists in his role as manager. An indispensable figure in rehearsals, chants, performances, in fact, everywhere, he is the "the guardian of memory" who gives these people their identity.

Abstract:
While some attention has been paid to organizational culture, there has been a paucity of research relating specifically to: (a) how first year assistant principals in the high school setting describe and assess their schools' organizational cultures, (b) how they utilize the information gained from their assessments of their schools' cultures, and (c) their perceptions of how they know whether they have been successful in adapting or assimilating into their schools' cultures. The purpose of this research study was to identify how first year high school assistant principals describe and assess their schools' organizational cultures and how these administrators utilized the information gained during this assessment. Data were gathered through a total of eleven interviews of assistant principals who completed their first year in 2002/03 and whose high schools were located in Regions Three, Four, Seven, and Nine, as designated by the Association of California School Administrators. Data analysis was conducted simultaneously during and after the data collection process. During the data analysis, the researcher attempted to identify common themes among the data gathered from the interviews. In summary, all of the assistant principals indicated that they described and assessed their schools' organizational cultures during their first year. Nine out of the eleven indicated they utilized the information gained from their assessments. All but one of the assistant principals reported that they had adapted and/or assimilated into the schools' organizational cultures during their first year. It is this researcher's contention that first year assistant principals need to be able to describe and assess their schools' organizational cultures so that they can better fulfill the roles and responsibilities of their positions. Mentor and staff development programs need to address not only why it is necessary for assistant principals to describe and assess their schools' organizational cultures, but also how to use the information gained from the assessment.

Abstract:
Yeast fields of application are extensive, ranging from food, brewing to green energy. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the worldwide dominating species. In addition, S. cerevisiae is also an important model organism in modern cell biology research and is one of the most thoroughly studied eukaryotic microorganisms. This work focuses on the behaviour of yeast culture exposing to pressure induced by CO2 and O2. The pressure is set up to 9 bar (A) due to the highest pressure can be reached in industrial scale bioreactors is 8 bar (A). In order to expose yeast culture to pressure conditions, new bioreactors were built and characterised. Two experiments are designed: an experiment to investigate the yeast growth and the metabolites under pressure, as well as the molecular biology experiments to better understand yeast cells behaviour under various O₂ pressure. The first experiment has offered a better understanding of the influence of CO₂ and O₂ pressures on S. cerevisiae culture behaviour. Regarding the impact of CO₂, the study has shown that the yeast culture has consistent behaviours under different pressures. While, in terms of O₂ pressure, under 2 to 5 bar (A) air pressure, yeast cells show higher growth rates compared with atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the antioxidant molecular glutathione kept a redox balance. Under 6 to 9 bar (A), the cells growth is inhibited and 9 bar (A) leads to the excessive oxidised glutathione accumulation. On the other hand, the molecular experiment has derived further insights on the culture behaviour under O2 pressures. The investigation of several oxidative stress induced genes has highlighted the cellular effects of oxidative stress induced by oxygen pressure and molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress response in yeast cell. It was shown that several oxidative stress induced genes were upregulated: transcription factor gene Msn2/4 and Yap 1, glutathione metabolism genes GSH2 and GLR, as well as a superoxide dismutase synthesis gene SOD2

This research is presented as final study on the conclusion of the Executive Master Degree on Business Administration and shows the implementation process of an asset integrity management system, on the Brazilian branch of an international organization with broad experience on the oil and gas sector. Although the parent company, is represented and has business on many locations worldwide, the Brazilian branch, on this research called Integra, is the first and the only one which is an oil field operator. The analysis carried out did not have the objective to evaluate the implementation of the management process in real terms, but intended to collect perceptions around the topic and have a discussion involving correlated matters, which are important for the implementation process, focusing on understanding how stakeholders see the integrity management area. The methodology applied to develop this research work was a case study and problem which was the focus of the study was how the cultural aspect and internationalization process ongoing influence the implementation of the work process required having in place an asset management system. In order to gather study material, it was carried out a field research by interviewing Integra’s employees and contractors. As a result, it was collected testimonials that allowed a good understanding of how those people view the implementation process of several processes in the company. In light of the available academic theory, the material collected on the field research was analyzed and it was concluded that leadership was the biggest challenge and should be focus for the implementation of a management system for asset integrity. Other aspects like vision term and collectivism showed to be important as well and are to be well considered on the current company’s phase

In this dissertation we seek to approach the practices carried out by Assis Film Society from 1960 to 1983. More precisely, its political-cultural projects and their relationship with the film society movement, as much as with the cinematographic field. To do so, we tried to analyze the historical and aesthetic configurations which enabled the development of a cinematographic point of view and the formation of sociability spaces oriented towards the cinema that, being part of the field of culture and art, were not free from disputes of interest. The film societies appear in the beginning of the 20th century, arising from the process of cultural legitimation of the cinema, having as its specificity the public organization around the cinematographic image. What was in the beginning a limited movement, it will, from 1950, multiply and organized itself in institutions representative of its interests, having as their chief activities the propagation of, the research about and the debate over the cinema and its political and social consequences. It is in this network of knowledges and practices that we locate the Assis Film Society. Originated in the University and considering the cinema a cultural manifestation, the Film Sociey inaugurated a new way of reception in Assis town: a project of formation and democratization of cinematographic culture which, from the 1970s, had the accretion of political engagement. Thus we set out to understand the trajectory of Assis Film Society... (Complete abstract electronic access below)

Black, David H. "Development of ovum pickup and in vitro embryo production to assess fertility responses for mineral intervention studies." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/52598/.

Full text
Abstract:
As nutrition is of central importance to cattle fertility, this study sought to assess how veterinarians and nutritional advisers manage trace element imbalance in the UK; diagnosis and treatment. The study also sought to develop a robust system for oocyte recovery (ovum pick-up (OPU)) and in vitro embryo production (IVP) for commercial use, and to identify key factors influencing success, including oestrus synchrony and ovarian stimulation prior to OPU. The intention originally was to use OPU/IVP to investigate the impact of mineral imbalances on bovine oocyte quality, early embryo development and pregnancy establishment following embryo transfer (ET). In the first survey of its kind in the UK, the understanding and approach of advisers to mineral nutrition on farms was investigated. Of the 173 respondents, 78% were vets in practice. The overall importance of minerals was recorded by vets as low 33%, medium 37%, and high 30%, while non-vets scored importance as low 17%, medium 48%, and high 35%. There was little consensus amongst the advisers, or within the vet and non-vet subgroups about mechanisms and interactions associated with deficiency, and particularly of copper responsive conditions. The most frequently identified deficiencies were selenium, copper and iodine, while the most commonly identified toxicity was molybdenum. For copper responsive conditions, all of the listed treatments were used at least "occasionally"; the most frequently being glass boluses, in-feed supplementation, matrix boluses, and then copper injections. While there was a diverse choice of treatments, altering the ration was relatively rarely selected. This thesis also provides the first large-scale retrospective analysis of factors influencing the establishment of a commercially robust ovum pick up (OPU) and in vitro embryo production (IVP) platform in the UK. Over a 5-year period, a system was developed and validated for use in the UK with 2,138 cycles of OPU. These cycles were analysed as four sets of data and included two IVP laboratories and 6 OPU teams. Factors in these analyses included OPU team, IVP laboratory, ovarian stimulation protocol and semen type (unsorted vs sex-sorted). The mean number of follicles aspirated by the OPU teams ranged from 6.5 to 14.9 (P < 0.001), while the number of oocytes collected was between 4.0 and 12.4 (P < 0.001). There was an indication (P=0.055) that the blastocyst per oocyte rate varied between teams. The proportion of blastocysts from oocytes that cleaved was higher (P=0.01) for unsorted than sexed semen. Two commercial products containing different ratios of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to luteinising hormone (LH) (Folltropin® and Pluset®) were compared in ovarian stimulation programs. The addition of 'coasting' (short-term (typically 48h) hormonal withdrawal after FSH stimulation), prior to OPU was also investigated. Pluset® resulted in a greater (P < 0.001) mean number of follicles aspirated, more (P=0.003) blastocysts per oocyte matured and more (P < 0.001) embryos per cycle (2.45), compared with Folltropin® (1.17) or with no stimulation (1.24). Throughout the study there was a steady improvement in blastocyst production per OPU cycle. In a separate analysis, Grade 1 cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) as a proportion of COCs recovered, oocytes that cleaved as a proportion of total COCs, and blastocysts as a proportion of total COCs, were all greater (P < 0.05) for stimulated than non-stimulated cycles, irrespective of FSH/LH product. A composite score of oocyte quality and quantity was proposed (sCOC); Log Total Mean sCOC was correlated (P < 0.001) with both the proportion of blastocysts per oocyte collected, and the total number of embryos produced per cycle. Finally, twelve peri-pubertal heifers (approximately 10 months old) participated in a crossover trial which compared PRID® (Delta®) vs CIDR® progesterone releasing intravaginal devices for use in OPU/IVP cycles. Vaginoscopic examination found higher vaginal inflammation grades for PRID® than CIDR® (P < 0.001). There was evidence of vaginal inflammation continuing for at least 2 weeks after device withdrawal. The proportion cleaved of oocytes inseminated was higher for PRID® than CIDR® (P < 0.05). Numerically but not significantly there was a higher proportion of blastocysts per cycle and a higher Log Total Mean sCOC score per cycle with PRID® than CIDR® treatments, but blastocyst yield was low throughout, suggesting a need to repeat the trial. Data collection and analyses are ongoing, to identify other key performance indicators within the OPU/IVP embryo transfer (ET) system, with a view to refining the sCOC composite score model. A robust OPU/IVP/ET system has been developed and this could be used to investigate further how mineral imbalances impact oocyte competence and blastocyst yield.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
Wastewater is normally composed of a mixture of pollutants. The type and composition of pollutants in a particular wastewater depend on the source of origin. The source and characteristics of a particular wastewater determine the ideal method of sewage treatment. Specific treatment techniques are effective in the removal of certain types of pollutants and may have no impact on the levels of other types of pollutants. Therefore, a combination of treatments and assessment of the quality of effluent before release into the environment is normally recommended. The assessment of effluent can be achieved by various techniques including chemical analysis and biological assays. Chemical analyses are commonly employed; however, they often pose detection problems and are considered to be uneconomical.

Maio, Rui André Simões Dias. "Earthquake risk mitigation of urban cultural heritage assets." Doctoral thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/30549.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis aims at contributing for the study of the seismic vulnerability assessment of urban cultural heritage assets, and subsequently, for the earthquake risk mitigation in historic centres, through the investigation of the eventual correlation between analytical and semiempirical methods, that could possibly lead to the development of a new hybrid approach. Hence, in Chapter 1, the framework of the main topic of the thesis, and the respective aims and motivations, are presented and briefly discussed, along with the outline and organisation of the document, as well as the list of publications that support the work carried out in this thesis. Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive literature review on disaster risk mitigation of UCH assets located in historic centres, by means of adopting a holistic framework about the features of such a complex system. This exercise is fundamental to understand the current streams of thought and to identify new gaps and opportunities that could eventually enhance the knowledge level on this particular field of research. Chapter 3 discusses some of the main challenges associated with survey and inspection techniques for input data acquisition of UCH assets, with particular focus to the investigation of assets located in historic centres, which are most likely enclosed in aggregate. In a second moment, the main challenges concerning the seismic response assessment of UCH assets are discussed, namely focusing on the pros and cons of macroelement approaches. Chapter 4 presents the main findings of a cost-benefit analysis model applied to investigate the integration of traditional seismic strengthening solutions in the rehabilitation of UCH assets. While in a first phase, only the economic viability of using such strengthening solutions was investigated, in a second phase, a cost-benefit model is applied to four different case studies considered representative of both rural and urban masonry building typologies of Faial island, in Azores. Chapter 5 presents the investigation of the correlation between two well-known approaches for the seismic risk assessment of UCH assets in historic centres: the “vulnerability index” method and the seismic “capacity curve” derived by using a simplified numerical model together with a nonlinear static procedure. Finally, Chapter 6 summarises the key conclusions that have been pointed out in the previous chapters of the thesis and outlines the grounds of future developments and research paths.

In this paper, the Luzhou District Office won the “Taiwan Town Brand Award Cultural Heritage Innovation Award”. Its strategy of activating religious assets and its successful marketing experience are worth exploring. Cultural marketing is an important theoretical viewpoint to explore religious cultural assets. In this way, the marketing theory and religious practice activities are integrated to enhance the multi-value of religious culture. The cultural marketing structure 5Cs (Culture、Consumer、Convenience、Communication、Co-partner) discusses the Luzhou God of New Taipei City. Abstract:
Cultural assets in schools need reconceptualisation. The focus of this multi-disciplinary theoretical study is to reconceptualise cultural assets by considering the shortcomings of existing cultural concepts and the benefits of reconceptualisation. A cultural assets model is developed and tested in a single Anglican school using multigenerational flows of influence, community cultural activities and communication by the use of rich data collected from a single case study school. Finally, the focus redirects to applying the analysis of a faith based Anglican school to other schools within the tradition and those outside the tradition. Such analysis assists in highlighting beneficial cultural assets supporting school effectiveness, compared to twentieth century studies using deficit and difference approaches to analyse cultural contexts relating to schools have influenced educational research and general political thinking concerning fragmentation, segregation and faith schools in post-colonial states. I contend that this influence leads to stretching the use of concepts such as ‘cultural capital’ beyond their original context and raises questions concerning the extent of their usefulness in a world characterised by globalisation, post-secularism and the rise of faith based schooling. Responding to these issues, this study extends the emerging assets-based approach to analysing cultural contexts within sociocultural studies. The findings of the study show ‘Caring’ as part of school effectiveness and professional practice. Caring within professional practice enables the teacher, school leadership, the organisation and the students to ‘Stretch beyond the 3Rs’ of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. The research successfully tested the model within the case study, modifying it to incorporate glocal (global/local) interactions and supporting the school as a cultural hub and contributor. The key benefits are schools that care take risks, and as dynamic organisations, schools that stretch engage their employees thus becoming more effective. The study makes recommendations to support school effectiveness in education policy, employment policy, teacher education and school organisation.
