Full textThe research proposes as a cultural space an Amazonian Ethnic Cultural Center in the City of Puerto Maldonado with emphasis on local regionalism. First, an analysis of the current situation was obtained which reflects the need for cultural equipment that promotes local culture through the original Amazonian ethnic groups. Therefore, we inquired about the place in terms of its great cultural, natural, tourist potential that it has as a region and the social, cultural and educational problems. Currently, a proposal for a cultural space that complements and encourages the education and culture sector is necessary, revaluing customs, local traditions. Also, non-architectural models were obtained through referential cultural spaces at a global, national and regional level that brings us closer to the activities to be developed in the cultural space. Likewise, reference books and projects of the typology and emphasis of regionalism were analyzed in order to obtain design guidelines regarding the aspects of location, form, function and the most appropriate and pertinent technological aspects for the intervention of the cultural spaces

This thesis addresses some dimensions about the creation of the Sao Paulo Cultural Center, since it's idealization as the central library of the state capital, in the second half of the 1970, to a transformation of their original design to house a multidisciplinary cultural institution, opened in 1982 on land adjacent to the subway line, between Avenida 23 de Maio and Rua Vergueiro. Aims to highlight the importance of public spaces as places where culture converges part of relations between citizens and public administration, where they breed unrest within the city because of social inequality and cultural, color, gender and sexuality differences. In this work, the Cultural Center is considered in relation to the city that crosses and their influence on city life. This research sought to recognize the agents involved with the planning of the "new cultural institution", identifying their references and contributions, taking as its starting point the need to expand the Mário de Andrade Library, due to the overcrowding of books in his tower and insufficient space to meet readers and researchers at that institution. It was surveyed the socio-cultural landscape transformations of the city of Sao Paulo in the 1970s and 1980s, the emergence of demands of the population in relation to culture and leisure as well as the development of public policies for culture in this period. Focusing research on the concept of cultural center and its popularity since the late 1970s, this research seeks to contribute to reflection on the culture of public spaces as places of negotiation, of which participated managers related to municipal administration, artists, agencies culture and diverse publics, whose values, identities and interests influence the constitution and functioning of these institutions, much beyond the meanings of art-‐ spectator

Full textThe proposed project is a cultural center, whose main users are the young people of the district of Chorrillos. The statistics confirm that these users are the largest population in the district and share the same educational and socioeconomic conditions that leave them in a situation of social vulnerability, affecting their academic and professional future. Likewise, the cultural infrastructure offered by the Chorrillos district is not enough for the number of young people there is, so the lack of interest in making use of this cultural infrastructure is growing. These deficiencies will be taken as a basis to provide a new comprehensive program of cultural activities that contribute to the cultural development of the young population of the district, in an infrastructure that motivates them to use it. For the development, 3 international cultural centers were analyzed under the concepts of 3 books detailing the design of cultural facilities. Public space management of this type is essential. Reason why the emphasis on “permeable architecture” will be treated because of the importance that these places on the public space and 3 texts that detail its fundamental principles, as well as 3 referential projects will be analyzed. This project, finally, will seek to be a complement to the educational facilities of the district, allowing a better cultural development of the youth and adolescents of Chorrillos; as well as becoming an urban regenerative element and a space open to the community, where social ties are strengthened and provide better opportunities for personal growth.

This thesis had as objective the investigation of the relation school and cultural center by means of observation of students` visits to the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil/RJ - a cultural center - between october of 2003 and july of 2004. These observations focused on the attendance offered by the Educative Sector of the Institution in order to interpret how the mediations with the school public happens. The responsibles for these visits, therefore, assume an important role in the field work, provoking reflexions concerning its formation and performance. Moreover, interviews with coordinators, monitors, representative of the Institution, teachers and visiting students had been carried through, as well as the responsible ones for the cultural programs in the City and State departments of Education and in the City department of Culture had been heard. The photograph and documentary analysis had been configured as backing features in the field work. It was verified expressiveness of the visits of public schools in result, mainly, of the gratuitousness of the transport, offered by the CCBB and operating politicians in the suburbs of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was possible to evidence some pedagogies - that for times entered in conflict -, present for the occasion of the actualization of the school visit, evidencing differentiated expectations on the part of the involved. Although a speech of the integrant ones of the Educative Sector of the CCBB - refering to the option for the dialogue with the school public, not to intervine, the respect for the repertoire of the students -, at several moments, it reigned a visit pedagogy restrictive and controller of the groups` experiences. The research ratified the lack of dialogue and the inexistence of toggle between schools and cultural center/museums already detached by other studies. But, at the same time, it brought elements that made possible to identify failures in meeting of expectations that, many times, had been the base of tensions between visiting professors, monitorial and the team of the Educative Sector. The field work did not have the pretension to produce but instantaneous of visits that will be able to contribute for a bigger integration between school and cultural spaces, recognizing, in this direction, the importance that the informal educational spaces currently occupy in the world-wide scene of the education.

ABSTRACT: Even though Portugal is considered a country with a long multicultural tradition, the city of Lisbon has been increasingly a scene of interaction and coexistence among immigrants from all over the world. In this sense, the adjustment between the appropriation of space according to different cultures and architecture remains a central issue to which the architect and the sociologist must observe closely. Martim Moniz is a study area that allows to perceive a social, ethnic, cultural and generational diversity. The present work intends to understand if the city is prepared to offer public spaces of intercultural coexistence and to what extent and in what way it is possible to accommodate the diversity of individuals, groups and lifesstyles regardless of their origin. In order to requalify and rehabilitate a block adjacent to Martim Moniz, it is proposed the development of a Multicultural Center. The Multicultural Center will allow not only solving some urban problems caused by the irregularity of the territory and the construction as well as to develop varied activities in the same space that promote human interactions among the entire population including autochthonous immigrants and tourists. The fact that there is a heterogeneous social and cultural structure and marked by multiple tensions constitutes an added challenge to the action of Architecture. This situation leads to the adoption of creative strategies generating what is intended: dynamics of coexistence, sociability and cultural and artistic creation.

ABSTRACT:The city of Sao Tome is based on a defragmented territory, with a dual urban growth. The architectural and urban informality shows traces of a city lost in time, showing abandonment over the centuries due to the rapid demographic and housing growth. Informal areas are the most prominent, and these precarious spaces are mostly integrated in the periphery of the city. Thereby, the present intervention intends to explore the city of São Tomé in its urban context, identifying factors that define the issue of informality, as well as the discontinuities and insufficiencies. The characteristics of the vernacular architecture and cultural aspects were taken into consideration in search of its integration in a new tropical city design. With a rich heritage in traditions and customs, São Tome and Principe is marked by its experience and identity. The new Intergenerational Cultural Center, complemented by its landscaped outdoor space that fits into the urban plan, is presented as a solution. The equipment aims to maintain and highlight the experiences, identity and concept of intergenerationality in São Tomé.

The condition of being migrant is peculiar to modernity. Being migrant is often a result of political estrangement from one's homeland, or dislocation due to economic pressures. It is a status which requires the individual to be temporary, shifting and dynamic. If the position becomes static, the migrant becomes an immigrant alien in a new and unfamiliar geographical location. Thus immigrant is the radical instability of the modern experience. Immigrant is not only a consequence of modernity, but also a metaphor for the process of modernity. Being migrant has the trauma of dislocation, of relearning communication, rethinking a cultural dialogue. It is also an interiorized alone sense of loneliness, and even a longing for a return to a familiar place and time. Being immigrant is a journey, both mental and physical. This thesis concerns itself with the issues of being an immigrant. In particular, the debate will revolve around immigrants of the last twenty years, the Asian community. I am interested in this group because they are still struggling to assimilate themselves into the American experience. The town of Lowell, Massachusetts has a community of recent immigrants from Vietnam, Cambodia and Korea. These people have been encouraged to resettle their lives due to government programs and a strong manufacturing industry in Lowell. They inhabit a part of Lowell known as Acre and the Lowlands. These areas have been home to the first Irish settlers in Lowell in the 1850s. The site for the project is itself a borderland condition, precisely where the existing Lowell community stops development and the immigrants begin their settlement. The area is currently a residential fabric on one side and an industrial locality on the opposite. The Pawtucket Canal, a man-made canal, runs through the site, acting both as a boundary and a seam.

Full textThis dissertation aims to analyze the process of creation and development of the Cultural Center for Youth Ruth Cardoso (Centro Cultural para a Juventude Ruth Cardoso, CCJ) and the impact caused by the actions of the CCJ in the community, particularly among its target audience, using in this reflection the concepts of \"cultural development\" and \"cultural rights\". The CCJ was established in 2006 in order to meet the demands of the young residents of the regions of Brasilândia, Cachoeirinha, Freguesia do Ó and of the city of São Paulo as a whole. The CCJ involved the creation of differentiated cultural facilities, focusing on the population aged 18 to 29 years, the general public that is not the main focus of the other facilities maintained by the Municipal Government of São Paulo. We analyze initially the relationship between culture and cities, focusing specially on the presence and distribution of cultural facilities within the Department of Culture (Secretaria de Cultura) of São Paulo, in order to achieve an overview of the characteristics of each of them. Subsequently we present the history of the CCJ, its creation, its networks, objectives and operation. These information were obtained from testimonies collected from the managers of the CCJ, documents and observation. Afterwards we make a discussion on the concept of youth and its expectations, and finally we deal with the analysis of the interviews applied to users of the CCJ, checking its characteristics, the uses of the facilities, and the evaluation of satisfaction, which indicates changes in the cultural profile of these young people in relation to their attendance of the CCJ. The results showed that differentiated cultural spaces and decentralization contribute effectively to the cultural development of its public and to the democratization of the access to cultural goods.

This thesis looks at the exuberance of city life as manifest in performance. Whether spontaneous or formal, gatherings for entertainment, celebration. spectacle and observation occur throughout the city at a variety of scales. A city's vitality comes largely from its great concentration of humanity. When people come together, an expressive energy usually arises as creativity, ideas. passions. and talents are shared. Interactions which we can call performance or theatre, in many circumstances, are then taking place. Thus. the city becomes transformed into a stage whose actors are its people. While the role of the architect in this process may be somewhat peripheral, an understanding of the spaces and forms which somehow tend to foster or allow public performance interactions in the city can be very useful in the design of public spaces which demand vitality. and. of course, in the design of theatres. The thesis begins with an historical overview of theatre form, which very generally outlines the development of performance, its historical context and its typical settings. The second chapter takes a look at a number of places throughout Boston which have been designed for, or adapted to becoming venues for performance. The third chapter. in a series of detailed case studies ranging from a sacred palace to the shopping mall takes a closer look at the theatre as a microcosm of the larger world in which it exists. and of which it is intended to symbolize. Finally. a design for a prime site in Boston is proposed which incorporates both informal and formal performance experiences. The underlying design intention has been to produce a cultural center which provides a scaffolding or framework for performance at a variety of levels for a variety of people. Form studies and diagrams analyze this intention in the context of the proposed design.

Full textFor a long time, Perú has had a non-sincere relationship with its cultural diversity. However, in recent years different actions are generating significant changes, which allow recognition of the different cultures that our territory is home to. Indigenous people, almost completely forgotten for years, are now an important part of this diversity. We can rescue their knowledge about the use and conservation of natural resources. The Cultural Center of Amazonian Traditional and Popular Art, seeks to recognize through architecture, the identity of this Amazonian culture and specifically of Shipibo Conibo culture, which is located mainly in the Ucayali region. The main axis of this project is the respect for its ancestral culture. The architecture tries to create a milestone in the city that responds to the place, its materials and its environment. Likewise, the climatological factor is one of the most important components for the development of this proyect.

ABSTRACT: The scaterred process of the cities’ expansion, the deindustrialization and the consequent release of the extensive areas, currently residual and/or marginal, reveal deep changes in the modern cities. Along with this paradigm, we are faced with an older and fragmented society where integenerational relationships are not common. Those findings, lead to other issues such as the segregation of the older population, the loss of the interaction between people as well as the sense of comunity, crucial to a sustainable city. The need of answering these issues, related to urban voids, the population ageing and the need of promoting dynamics to enhance intergenerational proximity leads to the search of new strategies and solutions. In this sense, the Cohabition of generations starts from the aspiration of creating a space that answers to all generations while fostering interaction and socialization. Following this aspiration, this arquitectural proposal aims to create a functional program to answer the needs of all age groups, more specifically the most dependant ones (elders and children). This project emphasizes a reconnection with the river and with a region, erstwhile central in the city, in which its urban evolution and the deindustrialization would be left alone falling, consequently, into deterioration: the Braamcamp Estate. Hence, in this project it is proposed the reabilitation and reconversion of all the buildings that make up this estate, located in Barreiro district, as an example of a place where different generations live together – an integenerational place.

Full textThe project focuses on analyzing the cultural and sociological aspects of the city of Trujillo, and merging them with the architecture of the Cultural Center and Museum to develop an architectural project that respects the main characteristics of the context and is related to each other. In the investigation, cultural traditions from the Inca period were found in Trujillo that are still being practiced. However, the practice of these is being forgotten or reduced to the point of only practicing it in specific families that preserve these traditions. Therefore, carrying out a project that shelters, disseminates these cultural aspects of Trujillo, that harmonizes with its natural and cultural context, was the main objective of this work. That is why, in fusion with critical regionalism, by way of emphasis, a synergy could be generated between the architecture and each of the characteristics of the place. Either because of its location, location, colors, materials and construction techniques. Allowing the project to function as a cultural focus that houses the main cultural activities of Trujillo, as well as promoting the diffusion of the Moche and Chimú cultures, and mainly harmonizing with its immediate context. Through the exhibition of archaeological pieces from both cultures, the promotion and dissemination of the cultural activities of the area, the purpose of the project is successfully achieved. The purpose of which is to keep alive the main cultures of Trujillo, the Moche and Chimú culture, and that their legacy remains in force over time.

Full textThis present dissertation is organized towards two thematic pillars: ageing and migration. It was developed on the basis of a social theory theme which it sustains and on the basis of interviews within the ballroom dancing students at the Cartola Cultural Center, which is located at Mangueira Slum Complex, in Rio de Janeiro city. The main goal is to investigate how the mentioned group benefits from the sources offered by the cultural Institution towards the ballroom dancing activities in the process of building ageing. The first point was to observe and verify that there was besides the motivation and pleasure on dancing, a incentive towards health care and preservation. Parallel to this, during the users profile sheet elaboration, it was also possible to observe and verify that and expressive percentage of these group was migrants, and so this fact started integrating the whole data. The work is divided into four chapters. On the first one Cartola Cultural Center is presented, plus the context in which the research is going to be carried, the activities offered at the Center, as well its main characters: Cartola e D. Zica. On the second one, ageing is taking from the perspective of the work of the anthropologist Guita Grin Debert, the main theorical reference on the discussion of this thematic. Next, on the third chapter, it speaks about the subjects decisions on choosing the migration, towards their own point of view, considering their motivation and difficulties. For that it was chosen academics texts from Ademir Pacceli, among also some other authors. As methodology, it was privileged the participative research according to Thiollant, which main source was the field research, within collection of data and analyses of the interviews done. On the fourth and last chapter the interviews are presented, putting in evidence the main related aspects to the research themes and building an articulation among them all.

Full textCenter of Cultural Difussion of North Lima, is a project located at the district of Carabayllo; whose purpose is to disseminate and raise awareness among the user with its history and culture, helping to reconstruct the lost identity of the inhabitants and the preservation of the existing cultural heritage. The project is located at Av. José Saco Rojas, which connects the districts of Puente Piedra and Carabayllo. In addition this land is chosen due to the proximity of the district's historical environments, such as the Plaza de San Pedro de Carabayllo, the church of San Pedro de Carabayllo, and the Hacienda "The Fortín"; which helps to reinforce the idea of "identity" in the population. It is aimed at the general public, of all ages, but with an emphasis on the age range between 1-30 years, since these are the ones that make up the population of the district with the highest percentage. The architectural program responds to the needs of the identified problem, user, and type of building that suggested; for this reason it has been divided into 10 functional packages to the different areas proposed. For the design of the project, several factors that have been identified during the research work have been taken into account, such as the needs and characteristics of the place and the user.

Full textAbstract of thesis This diploma work employs algorithmic design methods in a design process that uses natural phenomena as the basis of its architectural morphology. It implements digital morphogenesis in reaction to ecology and the infl uential forces of the building environment. The resulting design of this process is a combination of the application of these forces and the use of traditional design methods. With the help of algorithmic design methods, my goal has been to fi nd new techniques and inspiration in the aid of architectural design. The use of computational methods in architecture have the ability, not just to aid in the design, but to aid in the search for inspiration for the design as well. This work is divided into two equally important sections; the description of the process and the case study. The description of the process demonstrates the methods used and the thinking involved in incorporating nature's infl uential elements as part of the creative task, as the case study illustrated the outcome of that process. Both sections are equally important in evaluating this work. Without one, the result of this diploma work would be incomplete and uninformative. Together they describe a fluent process from concept to design and as such, the distinctive parts complete each other. My intention was to study different possibilities in which algorithmic aided design could develop the process of architectural design. My intention was not to reach a final and definitive answer to the design problem just by creating a set of design tools and then pressing a ’start‘ button; the methods used in this diploma work offer a more soft-touch integration of computational methods as an extension of our inspiration and sketching processes. Algorithmic design methods offer new ways of searching for information and motivation to reinforce our design intentions. Using algorithmic design methods, I created tools for simulating nature's environmental and visual forces. These tools create transformations in NURBS-based (Non-uniform rational B-spline) surfaces through the translation of their respective control point matrices. Using these tools, I tested and analysed several different seeds that would work as the starting point for the evolutionary process. Based on that information, I designed a seed to be used in the process of the final design. Through evolutionary methods and the influential environmental forces, I received a final solution that I then used as an informed draft to further refine my design. The final case design is a digital representation of an organic architectural form. I have avoided the use of pre-learned mannerisms and direct references to existing solutions. This offered the possibility to be inspired by the location, its ecology and the design problem itself, rather than just looking into recent architectural publications as source for inspiration. These new techniques offered me a way to break free from the limitations of my own mind, and truly search for alternative solutions through the inspiration of nature

Full textThe fundamental purpose of Theoretical Communities of Praxis: The University Writing Center as Cultural Contact Zone is to investigate the situatedness of Writing Center Studies, defining it as an autonomous (sub)discipline and interdisciplinary contact zone within the larger discipline of Rhetoric and Composition. In order to meet this objective, a “Communities of Praxis” methodological and theoretical framework, based on scholarship of Critical Discourse Analysis, ecocomposition, and Contextualist Research Paradigm, is applied in the analysis of a variety of WCS discourses.
In doing so, WCS is repositioned as a series of interrelated, triangulated contact zones that are based on collaborative interactions and illustrated through the development of heuristic maps that challenges the traditional discursive practices of local writing centers and the WCS (sub)discipline alike. By emphasizing a (sub)disciplinary identification based on embracing WCS’s place as an interdisciplinary contact zone, this dissertation demonstrates ways for all stakeholders to employ a Communities of Praxis framework in order to more effectively and more equitably consider the theoretical places and physical spaces of Writing Center Studies.

ABSTRACT: Symbols of domestic architecture, the medieval Palaces come from new ways of thinking and living the daily life, allied to the demonstration and hierarchy of the manorial power of a medieval time. In The Palace as a ‘symbolic dwelling' hierarchical of a territory in the contemporaneity, a study is developed focusing on the evolution and main characteristics of the portuguese medieval Palaces as structuring elements of the territory, heritage that characterizes the identity and the memory of the cities, but that often are devalued and/or left to abandonment. The Royal Palace of Belas emerges, from the importance it acquires, in the formation and structuring of the village of Belas and from its own heritage relevance. Today, it is a "forgotten" heritage, which adds to the issues of depopulation of historic centers, given the decharacterization in the urban fabric. In this way, the practical component acquires support in the theoretical questions developed to respond to the urban and architectural proposal. The urban plan is focused on Praça 5 de Outubro, in search of a revitalization of the historic center of Belas. The proposal will be based on the requalification of the square, turning the Royal Palace into a prominent place. Therefore, on the architectural level, the valuation of heritage as a reference point of the place appears as a way of promoting the cultural offer in society and returning the local identity.

Genealogy analysis of the concept of hospitality. It presents a genealogy of the concept of hospitality from discursive practices that are located in fields such as social, economic and political, highlighting the power relations that are built and emerge through a discursive engineering. It seeks, particularly, to understand how it is woven, historical and discursively, the conception of hospitality in Praia Grande’s neighborhood, in São Luís, Maranhão, from several discursive practices. The neighborhood initially housed the local elite, who built the house of colonial origin, thanks to the development of productive activities in São Luís. After the decadence in economy, the elite left the mansions of the Great Beach, now synonyms of antique. From the 1940s onwards of the twentieth century, preservation policies are proposed in order to promote the place's revitalization, by means of the restoration of the architectonic collection, which makes Praia Grande one of the city’s main postcards. This research is guided by the French Discourse Analysis of the Foucaultian base, anchoring in existing studies in Brazil, guided by Gregolin (2004); Sargentini and Navarro-Barbosa (2004), Fernandes (2008), and researchers who have the São Luís' city as study's object. Based on the different discursive places in which the subjects are located, it is proposed to analyze the discursive formations that construct an idea of hospitality on São Luís Historic Center. For that, we analyze statements of a total of 15 (fifteen) interviews with the Secretary of the Municipal Secretariat of Tourism and the Historic Center’s Deputy Mayor; with private sector managers - formal and informal traders in Praia Grande’s neighborhood; with tourists who visited the neighborhood observing in their statements possible constraints that could interfere in the relations that constitute the urban hospitality in the neighborhood of Praia Grande.
