Koulas, Heather Marshall. "Native Indian cultural centres : a planning analysis." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26861.

Full text
Abstract:
Native Indian Cultural Centres have grown out of the on-going struggle for native self-determination and are rapidly becoming a focus for native cultural revitalization. This thesis investigates the evolution of two Northwest Coast native Indian cultural centres--the 'Ksan Village and the Makah Cultural and Research Centre (MCRC)—through each stage of development, outlining the historical, cultural, economic and social context, the form and function of conceptual development and the planned and unplanned processes involved in building and operating each centre. Analysis has indicated that 'Ksan and the MCRC have evolved as a response to local cultural and economic pressures and opportunities and have been funded primarily on the basis of economic rather than cultural viability. Six factors were found to be collectively sufficient to promote the successful development of each cultural centre: local cultural knowledge, social mobilization, local project relevance, native Indian control, access to resources and common motivational ground. The relationship between native Indians and non-native specialists is changing. Native people are no longer allowing non-native specialists to define their culture and interpret their heritage and 'Ksan and the MCRC have positively re-inforced that change. The development of native Indian cultural centres has provided an important step in the on-going native struggle for self-determination by providing a focus and/or forum for native cultural identity and is likely to continue in the future.

Haagen, Claudia Elisabeth J. "Strategies for cultural maintenance : aboriginal cultural education programs and centres in Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29726.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the cultural education programs that have been developed over the past two decades by Canada's First Peoples. These programs are designed to strengthen and maintain indigenous cultures by promoting cultural identity and by developing cultural curriculum materials for a broad range of education programs. This thesis gives particular emphasis to cultural education centres and their unique integration of a characteristic set of programs which have been designed to systematically collect, preserve and communicate indigenous cultural knowledge. Despite the effects of more than a century of colonization, and against all expectation. Native cultures have persisted. Native people are now actively communicating a renewed confidence in their own cultures, their values and their ways of doing things. Community-based self-government and the maintenance of a land base are ideologically inseparable from the retention of culture and language, and Native people today view these as integral to their survival and self-determination as distinct peoples within the fabric of the majority society. Cultural education programs and centres perform a significant communication function in the agenda of self-determination by both ensuring and affirming the continuing viability of Native cultures. This thesis explores the ideology of cultural survival and examines its current expression as a program of action directed at the damaging effects of cultural disruption. The background to the emergence of cultural goals is discussed, with reference to their central place in the socio-economic development strategies and education policies developed by Native organizations in the 1970's. A variety of cultural education programs are described with a specific focus on two cultural education centres in British Columbia. Cultural education programs, as they are defined and carried out by various Native agencies, are presented as significant innovations in the definition and management, overall, of cultural heritage. The organizational integration of these programs also represents a significant innovation in the area of community development. In this context, museological themes are explored. Native concepts of culture are contrasted to non-Native concepts of heritage, with particular attention given to some of the problems in the way non-Native museums have traditionally represented Native cultures.

Abstract:
Experiences in the early years of life are increasingly recognised as significant predictors of long-term cognitive and psychosocial behaviour. This thesis focuses on one aspect of early development: the cultural identity of the young child and investigates the influence of continuity of practice between home and the child care centre in this development. The use of child care services for very young children has increased dramatically in the past two decades. For the first time in history there may be more babies aged 0-3 years in care situations than babies who are cared for at home - this impacts upon the child’s micro-culture (individual, unconscious practices guided by beliefs, norms and values) and macro-culture (ritualistic, symbolic behaviour, often conscious which is tied to belonging to an ethnic group). This study investigates the way in which child care centres contribute to the development of micro and macro-cultural identity in very young children. This study was originally designed to increase the knowledge base about the ways in which interactions with children (particularly in relation to sleep and feeding micro-cultural practices) differ between home and child care service and the implications of these differing practices. As the study progressed a new focus was developed and evolved into an analysis of communication processes between parents and staff and the effects of those communication processes. Qualitative methods on non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews and semi-structured questionnaires were used to address the research questions. Recommendations from the study focus on setting level and policy issues. The early childhood sector is called on to redress notions around communication and partnership building with parents

Abbas, Mohamed Yusoff. "Proxemics in waiting areas of health centres : a cross-cultural study." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2000. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14461/.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of waiting areas in Malaysia's health centres appears to ignore human feelings and behaviour. This was observed by the present researcher; similar concerns about waiting areas in health centres in the U.K. have been voiced by other authors such as Beales (1978) and Cammock (1973, 1975. 1983). 'Proxemics' or the interpersonal distance relationship between people in conducting their daily activities within their cultural domain is broadly categorised under the study of human spatial behaviour. There is in abundance of studies on human spatial behaviour. but few have focussed on the cross-cultural aspects. Results from those few studies have not been consistent. the reason being methodological (see Hayduk (1983); Aiello (1987); Bell, et. al., (1996)). However, those studies that can be categorised as 'truly' crosscultural, that involved natives of the country when the study was conducted, and which used the field/naturalistic unobtrusive observation method - that is in conducting the research at the actual setting rather than in laboratories, and making the observations in an inconspicuous manner, have all supported the hypothesis that there are cross-cultural differences. This method, together with a new technique of measurement, was adopted for the present research. It was used to examine differences in proxemics behaviour between people of Western and Eastern cultures, specifically between the British and the Malaysians in health centre waiting areas. This research is intended to uncover the basis on which subjects made their choices about where they would sit in a waiting room. The factors break down into three main classes: those about the subjects themselves, those that relate to the properties of the seating, and those which relate to the presence of other people. Following a literature review it was hypothesised that the observed behaviour of the British subjects would demonstrate a tendency to maintain interpersonal space in their choice of seats, whereas the Malaysian subjects would demonstrate an interest in using the opportunity for social intercourse. Within the limitations of the present research and the Eastern cultural background of the present researcher, the findings from the present study however remained inconclusive. While several of the fmdings seemed to suggest that the British subjects demonstrated a tendency to maintain inter-personal space in their choice of seats, there were also other findings that suggested otherwise.

The result of the following thesis was based on research upon public attendance to art exhibition in Cultural Centres as well as Art Museums. Utilizing observing ethnographic facts, we describe social practices and interactions which take place amongst social actors during the time of the exhibit. On bringing the reader to the researching universe and discussing concepts based on a sociologic approach of art exhibition, we cover the fundamental social practices of the public during exhibits on how to study, play, talk, observe the artistic work, take a glimpse, familiarize, caress and court it. We also try to show how the exhibit may consist an item of a group of activities significant to the social actors. As to conclude, we presented our contributions and discussed the limits of the pattern individual / art work and that of the conception of art exhibition as a receptive message arena.

Park, Sung-Hye. Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010503.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last decades of the twentieth century, contemporary museums and art centers have been very dynamic : redefinition, expansion and modernization. They transform to meet the needs of contemporary societies. In this evolution multidisciplinarity is considered as one of the most significant innovation. It contributes to the renewal of the museum concept and participates in the invention of cultural complexes. Our thesis aims to elucidate the emergence and dissemination of multidisciplinarity in society, art and culture. More specifically, the study focuses on the organizational, professional and cultural implications of multidisciplinarity in contemporary art institutions. ln the light of the experience of the Pompidou Center, it takes into consideration structures and operations, changes and evolution and the management of cultural programs. The study of internal features and their impact on multidisciplinary exhibition shows how the Center has brought together all of its departrnents, naturally centered on themselves, giving them coherence and visibilitv Furthermore, the analysis of export, transposition or rejection of the Pompidou Center model is undertaken by examining the Tate Modem and the Pompidou Center-Metz, which raises the question of the sustainability of the idea of multidisciplinarity as a social value. Finally, the thesis shows that cultural institutions dedicated to a comprehensive approach of artistics disciplines tend to promo te a multidisciplinary approach to art and culture in society

Abstract:
The starting point of the research is the situation in which Spain finds itself as a destination country for immigrants. This fact has entailed the arrival of a new population - the immigrant population - which has brought different languages and cultures. Its presence confronts us with the challenge of welcoming and including otherness. Where this task is most visible and is raised as an issue most urgently is in schools.
The presence of the new pupils causes mismatches in the dynamics of the schools, tension and anxiety among parents and professionals. On top of all this we have to add the dichotomy between official rhetoric and practice.
This incipient problem in Concerted Private Schools has specific dimensions which make the study of the phenomenon in this area particularly interesting.
School as a place of tension, crisis, conflict and therefore as an opportunity for change, is the territory which this research aims to explore, considering that a crisis becomes a disaster only when we respond with preconceived judgements (prejudices).
From this standpoint, we propose new outlooks on:
- School, which we consider to be territory of Culture Shocks.
- Conflict, where we see the need to overcome the reductionalist view of Pedagogy, which links it to lack of discipline. We propose the construction of a new culture and a new sensibility which regards it as a possibility for dialogue and for building bridges between cultures.
- Change, for which we propose a new and more complex concept which overcomes the classic view that sees it as a wide, lineal development, replacing it with a rhizomatous image developing in numerous directions and with varying intensity. We are concerned with continuities, intermediate spaces; what is marginal may be a transforming factor of what is established.
The case-study methodology has enabled us to establish a typological approach to the different responses to change, bringing to light the different intensities and directions from which the problem is approached, revealing lines of light and shade which are interesting with a view to detecting future problems.

Abstract:
Characteristics of national cultures have frequently been claimed to influence service quality perception and customer satisfaction. This inquiry investigates this claim by analysing a multinational company’s call centre servicing two markets across national borders. Hypotheses are derived which relate the cultural and customer characteristics of age, gender and socio-economic status to customer satisfaction and perceived service quality within each country.Using multiple regression and CHAID models as well as Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, the hypotheses are tested by analysing call centre service feedback data on 245 customers in the South African and 201 customers in the British market. Empirical support for the effect of national culture on perceived service quality and customer satisfaction is found.Empirical proof that females report higher levels of satisfaction than males is found while the importance customers place on service quality constructs are proven to vary by age and gender. A call centre management model integrating culture and customer characteristics, which provides a richer perspective of the mechanics of value creation, is suggested.

The aim of this thesis is to identify the prospects and the limits of the Czech cultural diplomacy in Sweden. On the one hand, it formulates particular recommendations on how to use present and newly emerging opportunities more effectively; on the other hand it tries to find a way to overcome its present limits. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the theoretical background of cultural diplomacy and current issues its actors, cultural institutes in particular, encounter. The second chapter seeks to answer what kind of an image the Czech Republic wants to promote abroad and what specific issues it faces in Sweden. The third chapter evaluates some of the Czech cultural diplomacy activities in Sweden by analysing selected programme areas. The fourth chapter offers a complex evaluation of the role of the Czech Centre in Stockholm and the organization as a whole.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the dynamics established in the conservation of cultural heritage in public spaces and its social uses. It was carried out in the historic center of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca. Cuenca is a southern Andean city in Ecuador, whose historic center was declared a National Cultural Heritage Site in 1982 and a World Heritage Site in 1999. We understand plazas as being favored public spaces in historical centers and places of both real and symbolic disputes. We studied ten squares, or plazas, in which rehabilitation projects were approved between 2006 and 2016. The research focused on the uses, discourses and perceptions of the citizens and local institutions in these public spaces. The study was qualitative, with an emphasis on the ethnographic method. We worked with documentary review and analysis, in-depth interviews, observation and consultation through an open-response questionnaire. From the analysis of the Historic Center of Cuenca, we proposed an investigation to generate new debates and narratives about cultural heritage, considering heritage as a social construct and a multi-faceted political device, and historical centers and their public spaces as scenarios where identities, memories, discourses and practices are not only diverse, but are interwoven with interests and demands of different kinds. The results of the research indicate that cultural heritage, in addition to being comprised of properties, objects and cultural expressions, is also a discursive construct and a complex scenario with a variety of different meanings, struggles and power relations, where citizens claim their rights over public spaces and the city. At the same time, the research allows us to affirm that cultural heritage is a discursive construct born from hegemonic visions of the nation, identity and the city. Cultural management has prioritized a homogeneous view of the society, making social conflict, memories and diverse heritage invisible. The study concludes that new approaches and forms of heritage management are necessary, which account not only for diversity, but also for differences, inequities and unequal social negotiations amongst the citizens. There is an urgent need to make diverse identities and memories, heterogeneity, conflicts and differences visible. There is also an urgency to rewrite heritage, taking into account the discourses of minorities, so that it can become significant for the diverse inhabitants of the cities.

Faulkner, Rebecca. "'For whom was built this special shell'? : exploring the adaptive use of religious buildings as museums, galleries and cultural centres." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2015. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/115/.

Full text
Abstract:
Religious buildings have, for centuries, occupied a crucial position at the heart of our civic centres; anchoring communities through an emphasis on ritual, tradition and continuity. In recent years as urban neighbourhood perimeters shift in response to waves of immigration, and the cohesive congregations that supported them disperse, many buildings face abandonment or closure. In the last twenty‐five years a number of houses of worship have been adapted into museums and venues for cultural exchange, aiming to honour and interpret the religious history of the building while promoting dialogue with a diverse local community. This thesis explores the trend for adapting and converting houses of worship into museums and cultural centres. It assesses three unique sites as case studies: a former synagogue in London’s East End, a functioning synagogue on the Lower East Side of New York, and a former Methodist church in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as emerging sites located in active Anglican churches in London and the south east. My thesis postulates that former sacred places can be re‐animated by an arts group responding to the building’s spiritual legacy; utilising it to demonstrate a powerful link between the existing community and its early congregants. I argue that multiuse buildings which promote secular cultural programming while continuing to house a congregation may appeal to members of the public who do not necessarily identify with mainstream museum culture. This presents the field of museum studies with a new model for the ‘participatory’ museum: a landmark building which can respond to the distinct needs of a multi‐faith, ‘multicentred’ society. The analysis my thesis provides locates my work within at the intersection of theory and practice, and within broader developments in the disciplines of cultural, urban and museum studies, providing a socio‐historical perspective on a new kind of museum. It is intended to be used as a modus operandi for adaptive use by religious buildings.

Gumede, Thembinkosi Keith. "Heritage Tourism as a strategy for the local economic development in the vicinity of the KwaBulawayo and the Ondini Cultural Centres." University of Zululand, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/1628.

Full text
Abstract:
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Development Studies in the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at the University of Zululand, 2016
The aim of the study was to find out how heritage tourism can be used as a strategy for local economic development. The study was conducted at KwaBulawayo (Eshowe) and at Ondini (Ulundi) Cultural Centres and their surroundings. The study asserts that heritage tourism is embedded and can be explained within a shift from industrial to post-industrial mode of production and consumption, where aspects of society, such as heritage and culture are packaged for tourism consumption. The shift from industrial to post-industrial society and the associated packaging and consumption of heritage in the form of tourism forms the main theory of the study. This shift took place in the late 1970s when global economic system which was predicated on industrialisation and manufacturing experienced problems which were recessionary. Out of the recessionary problems, a new system of production called post-industrialisation or post-Fordism or post-modernity emerged. Post- industrialisation came with new processes of production and consumption. With regards to consumption, consumerism became a feature of the new economy. Consumerism meant that aspects of the society, such as heritage and culture had to be packaged for the tourist consumption and revenue generation. The study employed the exploratory mixed methodology, which suggests that the study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. With analysis and interpretation of data, content analysis was used to analyse the interviews while, SPSS and Microsoft Excel were used to analyse quantitative data. The population of the study was comprised of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Official(s), Zululand and King Cetshwayo District Municipalities’ Tourism Officers, KwaBulawayo and Ondini Cultural Centres’ Site Managers, Tribal Authorities and community members of the KwaBulawayo and the Ondini Cultural Centres. The study conducted face-to-face interviews and a sample of thirty seven respondents was drawn from the tourism officials and communities. The study found that the role players, i.e. officials and community members, understand the study sites in terms of culture, history and tradition, which suggests that they have not moved beyond the use value of the heritage sites. The findings revealed that the community is well aware of the heritage sites, that is, the cases of this study. However, the study established that the majority of communities did not know how long the heritage sites have been in operation. With regards to the running of the study sites, based on the Provincial and District Officials’ responses, the results showed that the power to manage them is decentralised to the District and Local Levels. The findings showed that the marketing of the heritage sites is not satisfactory. However, the on-line marketing (e.g. Internet, Facebook) was found to be predominant. The general observation of the study showed that the branding of the heritage sites revolves around King Shaka and King Cetshwayo. The communities of the study areas embrace heritage tourism sites and are regarded as the most important role players in heritage tourism of the study areas. The study found that heritage tourism has been used as a strategy for the local economic development of the study areas. The findings presented that attributes, such as artefacts and infrastructure, e.g. roads, stimulate heritage tourism of the study areas. The study observed that the tourists’ turnout to the heritage sites is inadequate. The study, therefore, recommends that the heritage tourism sites, in collaboration with all stakeholders, need to find alternative strategies to improve heritage tourism in the study areas e.g. involving tourism operators in their tourism processes. This could assist the heritage sites to generate sufficient revenue to employ more locals and assist the emerging local entrepreneurs with funding to strengthen their business ventures. The study recommends that the heritage sites need to engage ordinary community members and the local business people, especially those in the hospitality business in the tourism development processes. This could strengthen positive relationship between community members and the heritage tourism sites. The study further recommends that the key role players in heritage tourism of the study areas need to focus more on the exchange value than on the use value of the heritage sites. In the end, the study recommends further research, which will focus on the basic policy and/or a principle that could address community engagement to ensure a collective and/or beneficial participation in the entire tourism industry.

Abstract:
This thesis has as its main objective the analysis of what happened to the museums of Catalonia during the first years of the Francoist dictatorship. In order to understand this period it is necessary to analyze the role that the Servicio de Defensa del Patrimonio Artístico Nacional played in relation to the museums, and as such the impact that this institution had on the museums. This has been possible thanks to the analysis of more than 4.000 documents unknown until now.Using this historical framework we present a study of the Catalan museums at the moment that they were reopened again just after the civil war. This is also compared to the functioning of museums before the war and what happened with them during the conflict. As such, an analysis is made of the main activities that took place in the museums at this period, how the museums boards worked, as well as the institutions that existed in that moment that contributed to restart the activity in the museums as early as 1939.

Abstract:
This research is based on the assumption that our cities are large heritage containers that are very difficult to decode, to transmit its values, from all points of view, whether urban, morphological, structural, and even historical, because of the difficulties that the vast majority of potential recipients have to understand the temporal and the spatial features. This difficulty is caused by the fact that the majority of visitants of the city, whether residents or tourists, perceive a city as a set of unconnected single elements. Therefore, the educational potential is considerably reduced and sometimes it even ceases to exist. In order for current and future generations to face this problem, the research make the assumtion that we have to create tools that are based on the language the majority of people increasingly use: M-learning. This is the starting point of the thesis: modelling applications to decode the complex cultural and heritage urban plots. From this point, the projective character of this research derives. To achieve this objective it is necessary to follow a methodological process divided in following phases: firstly, to study the existing material (informative panels, guided tours, apps, etc.). Secondly, to try to understand what mental representations the users have about the city. Then, design a prototype application that complies with the requirements of an inclusive didactic application which could be extrapolated to cultural tourism. Fourth, to test the design prototype with different techniques from a test of usability and a user test up to focus groups. Fifth, deeply analyse the results of these tests in order to finally model a class of applications with all its variants, allowing to decode the urban context. The physical framework, in which the prototype was experienced, was a central area that was previously selected and limited: the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. For this reason, the research deals with proper and specific issues of the city going from history, an analysis of urban structure, up to many other conceptions that have been used, not only to preserve heritage but also to destroy it. This methodological approach is one of the main contributions of the research, because there are few types of this kind of experience in the educational field and there is nothing similar in the M-learning field. The result of the research is a design of an Open-Air Museum model based on a precise definition of the city as an open-air museum, referring to urban complexes. With this approach, the future lines for research are suggested; one of the most important of them is the need to design such products using methodologies based on User-Centered Design (UCD). At the same time, it offers a vast field for research, applying assessment methodologies on designed models and all its variants.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis deals with the relationship between society and World Heritage historical centres to achieve sustainable management through participatory governance. The case study chosen was the historical center of Santa Ana de Cuenca in Ecuador, as it illustrates the significant tensions between society and the World Heritage managerial bodies as a result of large-scale urban interventions in these spaces. The research focuses on identifying the aspects limiting social participation in World Heritage historic centre management to propose an alternative method. This proposal interconnects, at a theoretical, conceptual, and methodological level, three fundamental themes: sustainability, participatory governance, and World Heritage management. This research is justified by the fact that the aspects that interest our study are currently being discussed in two fields: cultural heritage studies, international institutions such as UNESCO and its affiliated entities. Moreover, they are also present in the development agendas of various cities, including our case study. Growing emphasis on the sustainable development model at the global level has influenced most of the current debates focused on finding alternative practices to attain sustainability in World Heritage practices. The literature on cultural heritage determines that its holistic understanding depends on diverse and active participation in its management. Therefore, understanding the relationships that different stakeholders have with cultural heritage is essential to effectively incorporate them into the sustainable management of World Heritage, which is the main argument of this research. One way of achieving this is through the hybrid forums proposed in this study as an exploration and consultation procedure based on controversy to reach a dialogical democracy that allow a sustainable participatory management in World Heritage historic centres.

Full text
Abstract:
A process of cultural legitimation of the cinema has occurred in South Korea since the 1980s. This thesis focuses on the role that cinephiles grouped under the expression of the Munhwawon sedae, the generation of cultural centers, have played in this process. Accordingly, I analyze this notion, understood as a social network of South Korean cinephiles who emerged as a result of frequenting European countries’ cultural centers in Seoul between 1977 and 1984. The analysis is based on a prosopographic method to understand the relationships between individuals and institutions, particularly the trajectory and various discourses on the Seventh Art of the Munhwawon sedae. As I demonstrate, this trajectory is nourished not only by an intellectual type of European cinephilia but also, more locally, by theories of cultural movement for the minjung (people). The discourses produced on the “South Korean new cinema” therefore exist on the border between art and politics. The latter side was seen as a counterweight to an absurd political system. Thus, I strive to show how the political objective has progressively taken precedence over the artistic objective with the effervescence of the movement for the democratization of the country: the resistance against the presumed incoherence of society then becomes more important than the pursuit of the Seventh Art. Until the end of the political democratization process of the country, a balance is drawn between the aesthetic and political ambition of the Munhwawon sedae. The engagement of these cinephiles within the evolution of the South Korean cinema constitutes a new initiative in the field. Now, the “members” of the Munhwawon sedae, who once were movie fans frequenting European countries’ cultural centers, have spread their cinephilia as directors, producers, critics, and film educators. Overall, this thesis focuses on how, in the mid-1990s, the Munhwawon sedae announced an end to the dark age of South Korean cinema. By positioning itself in this way, literally at the heart of this artistic and political new wave, the Munhwawon sedae formed as the new cultural elite of South Korean society

Abstract:
My diploma thesis is based on the module Res Publica - Public works focusing on community buildings. Dozens of towns were surveyed, whether they are interested in reconstruction of their community or sociocultural centre, and eventually a small town Dolní Kounice was chosen especially because of the beauty of the surrounding countryside as well as the exciting native urbanism and architecture. This thesis deals with transformation of the cultural house from the 50s of the 20th century to a new cultural centre. The extension and inconvenient terrace were removed and the hall is supported by a new mass of the vestibule at the interface between interior and exterior, on the site of the former patio. Next, a new front of the building was introduced which increased the entrance of the house and created a space for a study room, small gym, meeting room and common rooms. The part of the house used for housing units is designed only with aesthetic details on the facade. The Culture Centre is divided into a set of materials in order to reduce the scale of the whole building. The entrance part mass, in contrast, is enhanced by its division and the chosen materials. In this way the originally embarrassing object of the Cultural Centre has been changed into a new centre with a clear architectural expression and the interior of the house is enriched by view of the beauty of the city.

Abstract:
Before it has specific legislation for the protection of cultural heritage, the city of Santos suffered considerable losses in relation to its built memory, with the modernization and expansion of its port, driven by the export economy. In opposing to these losses, several manifestations and debates emerged from the 1970s in favor of preservation in Santos. In this way, several requests for registration were made to the official preservation agencies and in the late 1980s the process of implementing preservation policies in the Municipality began, with the creation of the Council for the Defense of the Cultural Heritage of Santos (CONDEPASA). Thus, the objectives of this research are to contextualize the role played by the preservation organs, the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), the Council for the Defense of Historic, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourist Heritage (CONDEPHAAT) and CONDEPASA, besides presenting and analyzing The Municipal Preservation Programs that contributed to the revitalization of the historic center. To better understand this process, four restoration works will also be analyzed: Casarão Branco da Praia, Outeiro de Santa Catarina, Guarany Theater and Casarões do Valongo.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This study, from the French school of Discourse Analysis, describes the different sense/meaning effects that the speeches on network and shared management produce. These speeches are initially formulated by the Ministério da Cultura managers of the Programa Cultura Viva and come to give form to their discursive memory. In the space of dialogue between the managers and the culture points and pontoons, discursive memory is re-signified starting from paraphrasic processes and polysemyc processes of meaning production. These discourses contribute to the quality and expansion of an epistemic field committed to a societary design that does not waste the experience and the Brazilian social and cultural diversity. From this perspective, the political subjects are also subjects of knowledge that is produced in the small worlds of sense/meaning, linked to community experiences and collaborative social technologies. Networks articulated by the state as a shared management strategy form hybrid networks, characterized by the contraction/alteration of the sense of politics, permeability and by a policy of silence. The culture networks are hybrid because discursively present the counter-hegemony values, but are structured in a hierarchical fashion, as the hegemonic networks. Discourse analysis indicates a structural asymmetry between the subjects that make up the networks. That asymmetry can be understood from the analysis of discourse produced from different subject-positions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Madrid, like other major cities, was not planned and generated as a whole. It results from a set of many different urban contexts, originating transitional spaces between them, who are often fragmented spaces with bads accessibilities and architectural characterization, incapable of generating urban space with quality and references, although these spaces sometimes have enourmous potential. The urban context chosen for the development of this work fits the characteristics described above and, our main objective, is the consolidation of the surrounding urban context of the Chamartín station in Madrid by qualifying the urban space and the pedestrian acessibilities between the surrounding area and the station. For this, we developed an architectural project adapted to the needs and characteristics of the place, wich can enhance the surrounding environment and take advantage of the services provided by the Chamartín intermodal station. In this sense, our proposal consistes in different building equipments destined to the arts, culture and science, constituted by theater rooms, amphitheatres, exibition halls, auditoriums, a library, event halls, educational spaces, temporary residences, among others. The proposed architectural program requires a large flow of users and loads allowing us to take advantage of the existing public transport services facilitating the acess to the equipments, expecting that generates a positive impact that we have conclude by the studies and analyzes that we present in this work. From they, we have conclude that we should implementate an architectural equipment of this characteristics, that we find necessary and appropriated to the scale of the urban environment in wich it will be inserted, by their ability to regenerate it.

Abstract:
Many states use their cultures to promote a positive image of themselves abroad. Some scholars argue that this can provide states with international benefits. However, other scholars point to cases where a foreign state’s cultural influence has led to nationalist backlashes and negative public reactions. In this paper, I examine how two common types of cultural diplomacy programs can influence how states are perceived abroad. I first look at the promotion of pop culture products, such as books, movies, and music. Using survey data from 12 Asian countries, I find that an increase in cultural product imports from Japan, South Korea, and China has a negative effect on how respondents view the cultural exporter. I then look at cultural centers, using China’s Confucius Institute program. I find that the presence of Confucius Institutes is associated with an increase in positive opinions of China. These results provide some empirical evidence that cultural products can be detrimental to a state’s international image. As a result, states interested in the international benefits of cultural diplomacy should be wary of promoting cultural products abroad. Additionally, while previous studies do not distinguish between the effects that different types of cultural diplomacy programs can have, these findings demonstrate that different cultural diplomacy strategies can have widely different effects on foreign public opinion.

Abstract:
Memoria (arquitecto)
