Flanagan, Rosemary, and Jeffrey A. Miller. Specialty Competencies in School Psychology. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med:psych/9780195386325.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Although School Psychology first became recognized as a specialty in professional psychology by CRSPPP in 1998, this area of psychology can be traced back to the late 19th century, where it can be thought to have developed alongside Clinical Psychology due to the types of cases seen in Lightner Witmer's Psychological Clinic that opened in 1896. Over the years, this psychology specialty has become to encompass the science and practice of psychology with regard to a wide range of learners, including children, youth, and families, as it impacts the schooling or educational process. In this volume, Drs. Flanagan and Miller provide a comprehensive overview of the foundational and functional competencies related to the specialty of school psychology. As the U.S. attempts to reclaim its stature as a leader in education, school psychologists are likely to play a crucial role across multiple tasks and levels. It includes information on common practice activities like assessment and intervention, as well as core knowledge areas such as ethical and legal issues, cultural diversity, and professional identification.

Abstract:
This chapter explores socioeconomic, political, religious ethno-cultural, and national positions toward language management, which underlie diachronic changes in South Asian nations’ language policies and linguistic ideologies. In South Asia, feelings toward linguistic diversity, as realized through national language policies and in actual national language management practices, are highly diverse. The negotiation of and diachronic changes in language policies, together with functional and ideological goals—visible through language attitudes, overt and covert language policies, and diachronic changes in language competencies—offer a lens through which to understand language management and value.

Abstract:
The 21st century workplace is becoming increasingly diverse and global in context. This creates a need for multiculturally competent employees who can work well with people of different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Higher education is uniquely situated to provide students with opportunities for cross-cultural and diverse interactions and for personal and professional development in multicultural competence. This chapter focuses on the social and emotional challenges posed by the increasing globalization of business as well as the increasing diversity of the workforce and in higher education. We argues for the importance of diversity in the workforce; describes how diversity is present on campus; and makes recommendations for how that diversity can be leveraged to train, develop, and prepare the workforce of tomorrow.

Abstract:
For the last few decades cultural competence has been celebrated as the curricular response to a variety of political and social challenges in healthcare. These challenges include the persistence of race- and ethnicity-based health disparities, breakdowns in communication between the patient and provider, and issues of cultural difference around delivery and acceptance of healthcare. Commonly defined as ‘a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency or among professionals and enable that system, agency or those professions to work effectively in cross-cultural situations’, cultural competence is meant to engender increased sensitivity, humility and awareness with regard to cultural diversity in the clinical context.
