Abstract:
This article is based on my experience of teaching Nepalese students, who are from different socio-cultural backgrounds. The study proposes a pedagogy through participatory and interactive reading strategy (PAIRS) for Tribhuvan University’s 4th Semester Graduate class of English Literature on the course of ‘Single Author’ (ENG 582), by making them engaged in dialogues, both in oral and written form, in which they will share and exchange their ideas on literary texts of Toni Morrison by investigating on some specific implications of the author’s vision on the issues of differences, prevalent in America. The proposed pedagogy is intended for raising students’ critical consciousness of the contemporary world’s most pertinent issues of identity of minorities, which Nepalese students face in their day to day living experiences. Thus, it is hoped that an individual and collective engagement would be developed in students for dealing with what is both historical and immediate, and global and local. By practicing PAIRS, students would develop self reflection on their biases that would make them critical of their culturally imbedded ideas and that would gradually make them empathetic to differences. The proposed pedagogy is not for demonstrating a teacher’s knowledge on the author’s works by critical and theoretical tools, but contextualizing the author in Nepalese socio-cultural conditions through the platform of a classroom of diverse thoughts for the students’ better understanding of the world, enriched with ‘differences’. The study further contributes to new pedagogy of English Studies for Non-western students by widening the field of comparative cultural studies, and thus enhancing the scope of comparative literature.

Abstract:
This paper assesses the dangers of the use of the concept ‘culture’ in present political and educational rhetoric. The first section offers a critique of the use of the term ‘culture’ in the so-called intercultural educational efforts. It asserts that ‘culture’ in its present use is a proxy for ‘race’ and supports views, which ignore diversity and suggest, purposely or not, an homogeneity which can easily spread into the sphere of biological resemblances and differences. The paper, then, identifies possible alternative understandings of culture through the examination of the contribution of anthropology to cultural research. In the last section of the paper suggestions are made to overcome current approaches to intercultural education through a call to diversify the understanding of diversity to include not only ethnic/cultural differences but also, physical, and cognitive ones. To achieve this goal a turn to the ontological and the training of teachers as ‘critical experts of design’ is suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract: this text is the result of a qualitative exploratory and documentary research aiming to understand the religious spaces as educational instruments for the respect of Brazilian cultural diversity, based on the urban tourism itineraries focused on the religious cultural heritage produced by the Curitiba Institute of Tourism and the Foundation Cultural of Curitiba. To this end, we propose the discussion based on the understanding of tourism as an educational space for cultural plurality through the construction of scripts with pedagogical conceptions and propositions. The results point out that the practice of educational tourism to promote environmental studies helps to develop not only cognitive aspects, but also emotional, affective, social and cultural aspects in the individual, favors encounters that stimulate student reflection and promote knowledge of the socio-cultural environment where Live and the enormous Brazilian cultural diversity, disrupting ethnocentrism.

Abstract:
Purpose The higher education sector has become increasingly aware of how the increasing diversity in society affects their institutions. The student population has become more diverse and future employers increasingly require trained students who are able to meet the demands of dealing with a more diverse market/clientele. In this regard, education institutions need to align their strategic approach to diversity within their organization. The purpose of this paper is to examine strategical reasons to diversify in different education teams in relation to two different diversity practices: attraction and selection of culturally diverse lecturers and utilization of cultural differences in team interaction. Design/methodology/approach In a qualitative study the authors conducted 19 interviews with educational professionals in six different education teams in a university of applied sciences. Findings Interviews with 19 members of six educational teams revealed that some teams acknowledge they need more diversity and exchange of knowledge and skills in order to meet the requirements of the labor market. Especially teams that prepare students for international careers foster this “Integration and Learning” perspective. Other teams, e.g. the Law team, notice less changes in labor market requirements. Still, these teams were open for recruiting diverse lecturers and found it important, especially to meet the needs of the diversity in students (access perspective). They also found value in the interaction and mutual learning in their team, but saw no extra value of diversity (colorblind perspective). Labor market demands for diversity seem to have more influence on the diversity perspective of teams than the diversity in the student population. Practical implications Since earlier research has shown that the diversity practices of organizations are more effective when they are in line with their diversity perspective, the differences between teams suggest that when dealing with diversity issues, universities can best work toward a common understanding of the importance of diversity but leave room for team differences in diversity practices. Originality/value Most studies on diversity management assume or argue that organizations adopt one diversity perspective. The present study shows that intra-organizational differences may exist with regard to the specific needs or concern for diversity management practices.

Abstract:
Obesity disproportionately affects U.S. ethnic minority preschool children, placing them at risk for obesity related co-morbidities and premature death. Effective culturally appropriate interventions are needed to improve health behaviors and reduce obesity in young high-risk minority children, while their behaviors are still developing. All known obesity intervention studies (e.g., diet and physical activity) since 2000 targeting U.S. ethnic minority preschool children were reviewed. Five electronic databases and eight published literature reviews were used to identify the studies. Intervention studies without identified ethnic minority participants were excluded. Ten obesity interventions studies met the review criteria. Published cultural adaptation guidelines were used to develop a mechanism to analyze, score, and rank the intervention adaptations. Cultural adaptations varied widely in rigor, depth, and breadth. Results indicated a relative absence of appropriately adapted obesity interventions for ethnic minority groups, suggesting a need for more rigorous cultural adaptation guidelines when designing obesity interventions for diverse ethnicities. Culturally appropriate adaptations appeared to enhance intervention relevance, effectiveness, and feasibility. The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate 1) the type and extent of cultural adaptations strategies applied to the interventions, and 2) how these adaptations related to the study outcomes.

Abstract:
Orientador: Christina de Rezende Rubim
Banca: Regina Coeli Machado e Silva
Abstract: The anthropology, as a manþs science, has always faced the paradox of biological unity of man in front of cultural diversity. The dissertation approaches this important question: how to define an object, the "Man", if in everywhere what we find are "men"? Which is the specificity and singularity of man as object of studies in front of cultural plurality? It is not an easy question, neither solved by anthropology, the dilemma goes through several authorsþ thought, and not only in anthropological, but also philosophical and psychological works. The question here is specifically treated from the thought of two expressive anthropologists, Malinowski, with initial formation in exact science, producing his work in the first half of 20th century and Geertz, graduated in philosophy and english, producing his work in the second half of 20th century. Some aspects of life and work of both authors are considered, bringing to evidence the importance of historical moment in which they lived and theoretical influences received. It is perceived from this that the problem takes several ways, because as Malinowski argues that the culture arises to attend biological and derived needs and tells us about a human nature comprehended in biological terms, Geertz understands that the man is a cultural artefact in a double way: the culture has interfered in the evolutive process of our species and it is constituted of a group of control mechanisms that guides the behavior and gives sense to the human existence.
Mestre

Orientador: Dalva Maria Bianchini Bonotto
Banca: Luiz Carlos Santana
Education has been considered a possibility of facing this crisis and working with the issue of values is crucial in this context. Considering these facts, the present study aimed to identify and characterize understandings and practices of a teacher interested in working with the issue of values, who elaborated and developed a teaching plan that aimed realize this work from the environmental theme. Using a qualitative approach, an instrumental case study was performed through the accompanying the teacher during the elaboration and development of the teaching plan with her students of fundamental degree at the first semester of 2009. The data analysis showed that, despite the intentions of the teacher in work with the issue of values through the environmental education and to exist a favorable scholar environment to this, this dimension was shaped in an implicit manner, both in the initial proposal and in its implementation in the classroom. The trouble encountered to develop this work in an explicit manner seem to be related to some factors, one of them related to a kind of an absence of a clear intention of the teacher facing the need of a better preparation to work with the issue of values, in terms of appropriation of the specific proceedings to realize this task. Another factor that hampered the teacher work was his belief in the idea that "knowing implies valorize", clearly expressed in the aims of her teaching plan. The teacher brought to the classroom mainly the experiences - and values - built during her graduation in Biological Sciences and during her master degree in the area of ethnobotany, values that she demonstrated it were built for herself. The weed community had the Acanthospermum hispidum as the major relative importance population, due to it numeric and biomass relevance. The community showed the similar values of diversity and equitability index through out the soybean cycle, although there was two similarity groups in the weed community evolution. The first group was composed by evaluations realized until 21 days and was characterized by the relative equilibrium involving the main populations. The second group had a clear predominance of Acanthospermum hispidum population and involved the evaluations realized at 28, 35, 42, 56, 70 days and at the soybean harvesting. The soybean dry mass, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium relative dominance was reduced until 35 - 42 days comparing to weeds. Afterwards, the crop increased those relative dominances, keeping high predominance on nutrients uptake. Abstract:
In the late 1990s an attempt got underway to develop a new paradigm for cultural development policy at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The fruit of these efforts was the adoption of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which entered into force in 2007. This binding international treaty has been welcomed for restoring a degree of cultural policy sovereignty to states against some of the pressures of contemporary globalisation, and celebrated for burying some of the political differences between North and South that had pulled UNESCO apart in the 1970s and 1980s. As an instrument with widespread political support the Convention on cultural diversity has also marked something of a landmark event in the more general controversies over the nature of contemporary cultural change and the role of cultural policy in the era of neoliberal globalisation. This thesis is a response to these developments over the last decade, based on a series of studies looking at the processes that led to the formation of the Convention and examining some of the effects of the new framework as they are becoming apparent in the first years following its adoption and entry into force. It looks in particular at the precise points of consensus between North and South that have been found in the new framework of cultural development, examining some of its measures and the way they are coming to feature - or not - in the work of international development agencies, policymakers and cultural industry stakeholders. These observations are developed through two main case studies looking at contemporary attempts at cultural policy reform in China and the Caribbean. The thesis also attempts to offer an alternative perspective to the legal and international relations analyses that have surrounded the Convention and its political controversies so far by approaching them within the framework of social and cultural theory, engaging in particular with recent claims about the transformation of culture into a 'resource' for trade and development in the new global economy. I argue that the new framework tends to conflate cultural rights and recognition with the right of the state to protect and promote activities that it deems worthy of recognition on cultural grounds: this has offered a welcome development to those that have come to have a privileged role to play in the contemporary concern to promote enterprise, production and trade in the knowledge-based economy of content and intellectual property creation, but it has also tended to weaken the position of others whose claims to cultural recognition are inseparable from demands which have little or no protagonism in this framework.

In this sense, it is necessary to "retell", rescue the story of the territory and the men who created it, to understand the current dynamics, the organization and the possibilities for future development. In this perspective, we built a theoretical foundation for understanding the territory in a multidimensional perspective, highlighting the cultural and economic processes tied to the German and Italian colonization in Rio Grande do Sul. We treated the historical construction of the territory, identifying and explaining symbolic and material elements, that is, economic activities and policies developed by the society that builds it, giving it meaning. The (i) materiality of the territory is reflected in the organization of society in relation to their peers and to the differences, in a procedural motion of constant (re) creation, (re) construction, that is, territorialization, desterritorialization and reterritorialization (T-D-R). In order to understand the relationship between territory-power-symbolic appropriation, we conducted a bibliographical and empirical research, which allowed us to interpret and analyze the territorialization of German and Italian immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul and the consequent formation of the territory of immigration. The territory as a historic building, with... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
Doutor

Abstract:
Abstract: The use of the soil and fresh-water has increased, so that investigations on the water quality in strategic areas are considered of fundamental importance. In this context, the study area was chosen for its water availability, demographic distribution and industrial relevance. With an eye on the water quality of the influence of an industrial effluent discharged in the Atibaia river, in the surroundings of a petrochemical refinery in Paulínia, SP, the following parameters were analyzed: pH, water temperature; total dissolved solids; turbidity; dissolved oxygen (DO); biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorous; rain; dry and rain seasons; water conductivity and chlorides. Also, the influence of these parameters on transient mycota between August 2007 and March 2009 was investigated. The method for counting the forming colony units of fungi was according to Clesceri et al. (1998). Pearson correlation coefficient, multivariate analysis of variance, canonical correlation to multivariate data and principal component analysis were the statistical methods employed. The results revealed differences in the influence of the independent parameters on the counting of fungal colony forming units (CFU). The fungi present in the samples were negatively affected by chloride concentration, total dissolved solids, water conductivity and DO. However, the CFU was increased by the rain, BOD, turbidity and TN. Among the statistical tests used, only Pearson correlation was not satisfactory for our studies
Orientador: Derlene Attili de Angelis
Coorientador: Fernando Carls Pagnocca
Banca: Iracema Helena Schoenlein-Crusius
Banca: Sandra Regina Ceccato Antonini
Mestre

Abstract:
AbstractDiversity discourses in music education tend toward anthropocentrism, focusing on human cultures, identities, and institutions. In this chapter, we broaden conceptualizations of diversity in music education to include relationships between music, education, and ecology: understood as interactions among organisms and the physical environment. Diversity in music education can be realized by attending to the ongoing interrelationships of local geography, ecology, and culture, all of which contribute dynamically to local music practices. We situate our analysis within specific Indigenous North American cultures (e.g., Western Apache, Nuu-chah-nulth, Stó:lō, and Syilx) and associated perspectives and philosophies to shed light on the multiple forms of reciprocity that undergird diversity. Indigenous knowledge, in combination with new materialism and political ecology discourses, can help us come back down to earth in ways of being and becoming that are ecologically sustainable, preserving the ecodiversity that exists and grows in place, forging egalitarian relationships and a sense of communal responsibility, fostering reverence for ancestors along with nonhuman lives and topographies, and cultivating musical practices that are one with our respective ecosystems.

Abstract:
Most of the techniques available nowadays for crowd simulation are focused on a specific situation, e.g. evacuation inhazardous events. Very few of them consider the cultural and personality aspects present in a society to determine the behavior of agents. Therefore, this work aims to build a framework able to deal with different cultural and personality traits as input, and translate them into a group parametrization, which is going to determine the behavior of groups and crowds in virtual environments. Also, we include in BioCrowds a comfort response for agents, in terms of density and thermal characteristics of the environment. Results indicate that the cultural/psychological mappings seem promising, since agents were able to perform as intended. Additionally, agents were able to react due to thermal and density comfort, improving their ability to react to environmental changes.

Abstract:
Within the development of new regional geography, the role of human geographic research in the study of regions is emphasized. Regional uniqueness, a consciousness of belonging to a particular region and regional identity also play an important role in the definition of regions. However, physical geography disciplines, e.g. geomorphology, can also contribute to the knowledge of these aspects with regard to the definition of regions. Currently, within the framework of geomorphology, attention is paid to the diversity of anthropogenic landforms. The knowledge and evaluation of these anthropogenic landforms, which are an important part of the historical elements of the landscape and are also referred to as cultural artefacts of the landscape, enables to supplement the cultural-historical values of the region and to specify the cultural identity of the region. On the example of sites – Staré Hradisko and Hostýn – we will present the specifics of secondary geodiversity with respect to the cultural identity of the sites.

Abstract:
The use of storytelling and digital art as tools to understand a migrant family’s life path will be in the center of an innovative methodology that will ensure the acquisition of multilingual skills and the development of plurilingual awareness, reinforcing the various dimensions of language (aesthetic and emotional, in addition to cognitive), in a creative, collaborative and interdisciplinary work environment. This is especially important among students who are not likely to receive further language training. It is not yet clear how teachers can explore multilingual experiences of learners, both in terms of language learning dimensions but also related with the multiple cognitive connections and representations, as well as to the awareness of language diversity. The JASM (Janela aberta sobre o mundo: línguas estrangeiras, criatividade multimodal e inovação pedagógica no ensino superior) project involves a group of students of the 1st cycle in Media Studies, from the School of Education of Viseu, who will work using photography, digital art and cultural communication, collecting information pertaining to diversified cultural and linguistic contexts of the city of Viseu (Beira Alta, Portugal), both in French and English, centered on a tradition or ritual of a migrant family. Based on an interview, students write the story (in French and English) of the life of migrants and use photography to highlight the most relevant aspect of the migrant’s family life. Using as a starting point an object associated with religion, tradition or a ritual, students create an animated film, in both languages. This approach will allow the exploration of culture and digital scenography, integrating in an innovative interdisciplinary pathway, digital art, multilingual skills and multicultural awareness. Students’ learning progress and teacher roles are assessed during this process, using tests from the beginning to the end of the project.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the procedure to create a 3D model of a neogothic family chapel situated in Castellón de la Plana (Spain). The characteristics of the case study make it an emblematic case of Building Information Modeling (BIM) applied to Cultural Heritage (Historic BIM). The paper explores the workflow used to create the model and how the difficulties encountered have been addressed. The key motivations for this research project are: (i) local authority needs and objectives (restoration works for the conservation of architecture; necessity to monitor the asset after restoration); (ii) the intrinsic peculiarities of the small building (vast diversity of materials, richness and diversity of decorative elements); (iii) the creation of a pilot project for future applications in similar architectures. The chosen workflow tries to tackle the principal issues shared by the academic world with respect to 3D and HBIM models, e.g. the difficulty in reconstructing complex architectures without time-consuming processes, the reliability and high detail in the rendering of colours and textures, the insertion of detailed information for each element. The experiments carried out have made this case study interesting because of its complexity despite its reduced dimensions.

Abstract:
The crisis at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries affected different countries and different aspects of social life, which was inevitable both due to geographical proximity and cultural, economic, political and other intersections. Addressing the topic of the sociocultural crisis was characteristic of both Russian and Western European philosophers of the early 20th century. The author in the article refers to the understanding of its features and ways to overcome it in the context of the ideas of Russian religious philosophers. An integral feature of Russian philosophical thought in the context of assessing the ongoing social changes and the search for ways out of a crisis situation is an understanding of the special purpose of Russia and an awareness of its role in human history. The works of Russian philosophers are full of anxiety about the future of mankind, about the fate of Russia, a premonition of possible death, therefore it is no coincidence that the appeal to the theme of the Apocalypse, the impending catastrophe, the end of history is perceived as a real threat to the existence of mankind. With all the diversity of approaches to assessing the sociocultural crisis, Russian thinkers are united by common philosophical roots, religion, national and cultural traditions. In the context of understanding the crisis processes of the early twentieth century, Russian religious thinkers raise the question of the role and significance of a person in the transformation of life, thereby actualizing the moral and anthropological problems.
