Child development is achieved by means of social situations in which the child's activity is privileged, mobilizing her actions to think, feel and act in an increasingly elaborate way. For this reason, the *teacher`s work in a early childhood Education involves creating of objective conditions for children to play, to relate, to express ideas, to externalize learning, thus becoming more and more human. Such conditions require the organization of spaces, the use of time, materials used and relationships in which active participation of the child acts as the main element. Thus, the guiding problem of this work was: how to propose children's free time in Early Childhood Education, with a view to their full development? Seeking the general objective of the present research to characterize the elements that make up the free time in the School of Infant Education, questions were approached regarding the management of free time by the children and the influence of this time for their humanization from the perspective of Historical-Cultural Theory. In addition, this research had the specific objective of discussing the contributions of free time to the development of human capacities, in particular, the appropriation of the child's self-control of behavior. The hypothesis that guided the study was that the free time in Early Childhood Education enables children to experience their human development. With a qualitative approach, the exploratory research involved a bibliographical review in several digital sources for knowledge of the production in the area, semi-structured interviews with teachers and coordinators, and the observation of free time experiences offered to children of 4 and 5 years of age in two municipal schools. From the analysis of theoretical foundations derived pedagogical implications, such as the possibility of free time promoting the exercise of different human capacities in children and access to the more elaborate culture in order to motivate, in the teachers, reflections on the value of free time intentionally organized for training and development of children. The analyzes pointed out the need for the teacher to recognize in the process of child development the importance of free time for children to play a role, promoting proposals capable of developing and exercising fundamental human skills such as: the ability to choose, to plan, to seek solutions and to work collaboratively, gradually exercising and appropriating self-control in their conduct.

Full textThis research encompasses qualitative and quantitative social-cultural aspects as to leisure, informal education and cultural features of Brazilians who lived temporarily in Japan in search for better living conditions. Firstly, a conceptual and theoretical discussion deals with issues such as leisure and its roles, free time, liberated time and unemployment, non-formal and informal education, and it outlines those Brazilians cultural features. Additionally, it addresses unemployment in Brazil and in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo in the 80s and 90s, with a short circumstantial report on Brazilians migration to Japan. The target public which comprises the sample is assessed with basis on questionnaires, and their history is approached through interviews consisting of standardized open questions recorded in cassettes, and through a bibliographical study. An analysis of the information gathered is provided, showing the Brazilian contribution to the Japanese life and what its social and cultural impacts on the local people were. Such findings make up this study guideline, furnished with similar situations faced by Japanese immigrants in Brazil formerly reported in a master s thesis*, resulting in a synchronic dialog. It is apparent that both leisure and informal education have wielded considerable influence upon the cultural features of Brazilian migrants in Japan, likewise it happened to Japanese immigrants in Brazil.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to attain a deeper insight in how vocal coaches view Time and Groove and in what way they use these aspects didactically. Extensive research in this area is lacking, only a few papers and research studies exist. With this in mind, my intention is to acquire a deeper insight in questions concerning various methods in how vocalists can develop their abilities in Time and Groove, and what Time and Groove, both generally and from an educational point of view, is. The theoretical starting point of this study is a socio-cultural perspective focused on how people use various tools to communicate. I have worked with the semi-structured interview method when speaking to the informants. The informants work as vocal teachers; two are primarily teaching jazz music, whereas the other two are more oriented towards pop music. The results demonstrate that all of the informants believe that Time and Groove in music is very important. Their approach on how to work with Time and Groove differ slightly, which can be seen in their use of a variety of tools for practicing, teaching and learning Time and Groove.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to acquire a deeper knowledge of the concept, Musical Time, and to show how experienced teachers apply this in their teaching. This study has its theoretical base in how the sociocultural perspective tools are used in teaching. The method used to attain the results is the qualitative research interview. All of the five informants work in either Värmlands Län or Örebro Län. They are active teachers who teach in different levels from high school up to music academy. The results show that Time is about how musicians place their rhythms in relation to the pulse and that all of my informants view the topic as being important and should be taught in all forms of musical education. The tools applied are many and it is not uncommon, in cases where only one tool is used, that the teachers use it in several different ways.

Having acted as a civil servant in Goiânia's municipal school network for the past fifteen years, I have had the opportunity of being a teaching staff member in several schools, an experience which has taught me considerably. However, it was only in 2010 that I joined the staff of a full-time school. The challenges imposed by this new reality motivated me to such an extent that I chose full-time education as the object of study for this thesis. Teaching and administrative staff members from two schools, as well as a representative from the Municipal Education Department (SME), were selected as research participants. The aim consisted in identifying cultural meanings conveyed through the discourses (“languacultures”) of the members of these discourse communities regarding the theme of full-time education. In addition to participants' discourses, I focused on official governmental discourses published by Brazil's Ministry of Education (MEC) in order to shed light on the way the government, at federal and municipal levels, regards full-time education and its establishment in public schools across the country. The inclusion of such documents serves as a counterpoint to the present analysis, for it promotes greater clarity concerning what Brazilian educational laws state and what is being effectively carried out in the schools under analysis. The theoretical framework used for data discussion includes principles underlying full-time education and ethnography, as well as premises from French discourse analysis (DA) and critical discourse analysis (CDA). Data analysis showed that participants from the schools in question experience and view full-time education very differently from the SME representative. The dialogue between schools and the regulating department is scarce, filled with obstacles and negative images on how to conduct the process of establishing, maintaining, and assessing the performance of full-time schools in Goiânia.

Full textSince the beginning of the Eighties, the measures implemented by the city’s politics and the arrangement of the child’s time, and more recently, in the social cohesion laws designed to orient and plan the reorganisation of the school system, have been powerful means allowing the emergence of local educational projects controlled by the communes. These projects are developed within an institutional context in perpetual movement, tangled up with multiple concerns, and are characteristically implemented outside the school time. Knowing that the local nature of these projects is strongly valued, by the State as well as by the communes, this thesis considers “the local educational” as the system that these local educational projects form as a whole. It deals with general information and identifies profound changes to understand and assess the impact of their emergence on the public action at the educational level, which addresses the free time of the children and the teenagers. This thesis is presented in four parts. The first, entitled “The factory of the educational room: from youth movements to the local educational projects” is made up of three chapters and deals with the sociogenealogy of the local educational, successively considered from the point of view of associations, of the State and of the communes. The second part is titled “To get close to the actors. The investigation and its means”. It is made up of only one chapter, presents the epistemology and methodologies of the investigation. This investigation, carried out on a nationalscale, mobilizes observations, a document review, about forty interviews, and a survey completed by 630 professionals in the field. The third part, “The local educational as field of action” considers two categories of actors: elected officials and the professionals who are each the topic of one chapter. Lastly, a fourth section analyses “The educational prospects”, in two parts. First, chapter 7 explores how the local educational projects are developed. It deals with the various types of mobilized resources and the working of educational partners’ meetings. Secondly, chapter 8 is centred on the strictly educational nature of the local educational. It deals with the goals pursued by the local projects, the breakdown and implementation of these objectives in and out of the working-class areas

Full textThis study investigates whether five former Model C schools in Bloemfontein are inclusive of diverse cultures found among their learner population. In apartheid South Africa segregation on the basis of racial and cultural difference was policy. Therefore, post apartheid legislation and policies, coupled with the fact that inclusion is not always understood or welcomed where people are used to segregated systems necessitated this investigation. The study was qualitative in nature and Buskens-Meulenberg’s Free Attitude Interview (FAI) was used as a main source of data collection. Principals of the five former Model C schools that formed part of this study and three university students who are former Model C schools learners were interviewed using open ended questions. It was important to employ the Free Attitude Interview because it meant the interviewees were free to talk about anything they felt like, as long as it was within the framework of the starting question. Secondly, it allowed for reflection on the dominant discourse and also gave a voice to the dominated discourse. To arrive at the findings data was analyzed and interpreted using Fairclough’s Textual Oriented Discourse Analysis (TODA). This method of analysis allowed the researcher to look not only at the text of the interviews but also at their discursive practices. The following findings emerged from the data analysis. The general finding from the data collected from both the principals and students was that these schools expected learners from diverse cultural backgrounds to adapt to the existing ‘school culture’ which is white middle class. The curriculum delivery, staff provisioning, and everything within the schools was found to reflect ‘white middle class culture’. The interviews from both the principals and students indicated that instead of being inclusive of all learners these schools go out of their way to assimilate children from other cultures especially black children. While this is the case it is also clear that the two groups of respondents view this differently. To the white school principals this is an accepted and normal way consciously encouraged and promoted. On the other hand this is a sore point to the black students which led them to feel that they did not belong in these schools and left them with feelings of alienation. I therefore argue that in spite of the rhetoric endorsing equity, redress, justice and respect for difference including cultural diversity, little has changed in terms of educational outcomes. Young black children who go to these former Model C schools still face exclusionary practices despite the fact that these schools have been open to all racial groups and they are physically there. While I have taken care not to generalize from the findings, – since this was never the intention of the study - I nevertheless drew the conclusion that these schools are actually not inclusive of learners from diverse cultural backgrounds. Adhering to the ‘ethos’ of the school and thereby maintaining the status quo seems to be the main objective of the schools (principals). In-fact black learners in these schools continue to experience exclusion and explicit racism. The study concludes that power structures in these schools – management and governance -, curriculum and the way it is delivered and all other activities within the school are used to reinforce domination of the learners from cultural backgrounds other than that of the school. From the findings the study recommend that for these schools to be truly inclusive of learners from diverse cultural backgrounds the Department of Education should take a leading role in ensuring that transformation takes place in these schools and they become inclusive of all learners. For this nation to be a true rainbow nation the Department of Education should not leave the transformation of these schools to the School Management Teams and Governing Bodies. Recommendations on what schools themselves can do to ensure that they accommodate, acknowledge and reflect cultural diversity and as such are inclusive of all learners are also given. Furthermore suggestions for relevant future research, based on the findings are made.

A person seeks to regain his/her physical strength, psychological balance and state of mind also he/she seeks to feel a satisfaction in surroundings which is readjusted or specially chosen for the recreation purpose. Recreation is also the upbringing of personality. The disregard for child’s interests in a quickly developing society is conditioned by the alterations of market and processes of globalisation. Although, a family is an essential element of society and it gets primary responsibility for children protection, education and developing in our country the family is not able to create harmonious conditions of socialization for a child. Consequently on this understanding, the role of school which is another institution of child socialization is very important. The purpose of this work is to ascertain the peculiarities of organisation the recreation activities in III-IV forms. The tasks of work are following: to ascertain how is the recreation activity organised in III-IV forms; to estimate on what level the present organisation of recreation activity satisfies pupils from III-IV forms; to discuss what recreation activity do pupils and their parents want; to study the experience of pupils from III-IV forms, their parents and teachers and at the same time to define the peculiarities of organization the recreational activities. Full textStarting from the question : what cultural matters do Lebanese people use in their free time ? This PhD thesis relies on the idea of the existence of a relationship between the structure of society and cultural practices, developed by Pierre Bourdieu in the theory of cultural legitimacy. The hybrid structure of society, a concept borrowed from Melhem Chaoul, constitutes the specificity of the Lebanese context : the existence of a francophone, multicultural and provided with a large diaspora country, as well as the contemporary diffusion of digital practices, raise questions related to the definition of cultural identity. Promoting the concept of « degree of cultural adhesion » seems necessary in order to find an answer. Based on a survey of 1,200 respondents in Lebanon, 120 respondents in France and 36 in depth interviews, the study shows that young people, as opposed to the older ones, tend most towards Western culture and digital practices. The most educated people consume both Lebanese and Western cultural goods simultaneously. As a matter of fact, the consumption of Western cultural goods is facilitated by trilingualism, which is mastered by almost half of the Lebanese. Additionally it has been shown that the regional inequality of the cultural offer is not homologous to a regional inequality of cultural practices. Religious commitment as well as the position in the life cycle impact cultural practices

Full textBased on Massimo Montanari's view of food as culture this thesis aims to follow through a rural cartography the changes of food culturallandscapes in the city of Tio Hugo/RS and its surroundings. This dissertation is presented in two stages, the first of them shows it through a mise-en-place metaphor in which the basic concepts for this research are pre-prepared in addition to the strategies used for such process. The second moment is comprised by the incursion in the studied territory through the narrative of women settlers and their families as well as composed by showing the analysis made by the cartographer in what is circumscribed in the field of Cultural Studies in Education. The focus of this paper is directed to some cultural transformations in the techniques used in the food preparation, in the selection of ingredients, in the time spent in the act of cooking, in knowledges passed on, in the urbanisation and industrialisation process in the rural area. This essay core is the space-time journeys and the cultural vicissitudes. The gol of this work is to problematize through these grounds how a fast-forward perception of time has been created, correlated to some aspects of use of technologies, to the globalisation phenomena, to te relations between production and consumption, to the territory that emerges as gastronomy, to the memory and the creation of traditions.

The law of associations of 1964 created a legal space, with the own restrictions of the Franco's regime, for an extraordinary proliferation of old and new forms of association. An associative will that generated spaces of sociability, contributing at the same time to the reconstruction of the civil society, using as legal base for the management of new social movements that took part in the political process of the Spanish transition to democracy. The study of the civil associations along the period among 1964-1986 shows in addition the evolution of the Spanish society between the Franco's regime and the democratic consolidation, with the whole series of changes that are produced in a country that in a little time will reach the global guidelines of the Western World.

This dissertation aims to point out (demonstrate/ highlight) through expressions and images in movement, the places which are produced in Jacobina's open market (State of Bahia). The exploited affections were perceived from conversations, sonic places of desires, rhythm and blood flow in order to provoke us to think about education, daily life and cultural differences. In this sense, we go through the mapping of expressions using discussions and photos; mapping of sensations, allowing us to go into/away of what we define as knowledge; and experimentally, realizing the intensities which happen in place and create other territories that compound in a fair many places, (re)invented by movements of desires from new existences in the world, which leads us to critically think education from outside as long as we do (not) accept that there are closed groups and only one cultural space to teach and learn school.

This paper seeks to understand the relationship established between children and technology, from the records of images portraying his spare time. In an attempt to provoke tension, we seek to also understand how this relationship is perceived in own childhood, with a critical analysis of children's textual productions on technology. To this end, it proposes a reflection involving education, society and childhood. Amid growing technical progress and the advancement of scientific knowledge society is marked by an instrumental rationality that inhibits the human dimension. For an analysis of this social context, as well as education and barriers to training process, we used the Critical Theory, especially the contributions of Theodor W. Adorno. To question the society and the trivialization of work to the brutalization of the senses, Adorno talks about the work extension in the free time, the reification of conscience and questions the cultural crisis and the (semi) training. With the development of microelectronics, screens occupy a prominent place in the children's everyday (and not only them) favor an ID and giving them an authority capable of canceling the other. About this predominance of screens, Christoph Türcke - author of Excited Society - Talking about the sensations caused by such exposure that lead to addiction. Through images and texts can be noted that the free time of children is called, almost entirely, to the screen and the consequences of addiction result in the removal (and cooling) of family and fraternal relations. There is a replacement of human relations and dialogues for virtual environments and spaces for chats offered by various applications. In order to facilitate conversation among peers such applications end up "cut" skills and personalities, eliminating differences and leveraging the similarities and patterns. How then think about the formative processes in this environment? Adorno points out the difficulty in education for emancipation, but points out that this needs to be the main educational goal. The school needs to maintain the tension between individual and society so that not purely predominates aspects of adaptation and conformity, inhibiting further thought. Scientific knowledge and progress can not be strengthened as weapons that imprison man himself, in a process of disenchantment of the world. The brightness of the screens can not obscure the playful nature of children and their experiences. Thus, this study is constituted as a reflection, a debate that, meeting the thought of Adorno, suggests tension between society and education and, therefore, does not end with the closing remarks.

The aim of this study is to contribute to the comprehension of how the changes entailed in the educational reform work and are expressed. It was accomplished based on a research about the new set, relative to the scholar organization, created by the changes introduced with the implantation of Cycle Regime with Ongoing Progression at elementary education in public schools from São Paulo. The initial hypothesis was that the this implantation would modify, meaningfully, the school time organization, what would generate a direct impact with the cultural capital and habitus of the teachers. The research took place in 2003 in two public schools from São Paulo state net subordinated to the same Teaching Board. It was made through interviews to two teachers in each school who worked at the second cycle of elementary school, 5th to 8th grades, at a total of four, and to the pedagogic coordinators that were working at this duty since the implantation of the reform. It was also performed the collection and analysis of school documents which expressed the school time organization. This job used the Pierre Bourdieu theoretical corpus as reference, mainly the cultural capital, arbitrary cultural dominant, strategies and habitus, to verify the resulting impact of the reform quoted at the consolidated docent practices. It was testified that the initial hypothesis, concerning the school time, was not proved. Nevertheless, the direct impact on the teacher s cultural capital and habitus regarding to meritocracy, which prizes and settles an ideal student pattern, the pedagogic authority reduction on behalf of ongoing progression that makes impossible the power of the decision about the retention or approval of the pupils, and the valorization and defense of the transmission of scholar contents without which school becomes devoid of its leading duty, was evidenced. Finally the adoption of strategies such as the defense of the Grade Board strengthening and the reduction of the cycles duration from four two years aiming at overcoming these impacts and its effects that are considered damaging, by the docents, to public schools and the pupils future.

Full textUntil now, studies about leisure and, specially about the occupation of free working time with activities that promote quality of life and the appropriation of different cultural goods, polemicize debates in academic places as well as in municipal, state and federal locations. Through analysis of the first Brazilian experience nationwide which aimed to promote, schedule and diffuse sports, cultural and scouting activities for the unionized workers and their families, its presented the Recreational Service for Workers, SRO, an organization created by the Ministry of Labour Industry and Trade in 1943 and extinguished in 1964. For the analysis it was developed a historiographic research based on qualitative information that used oral history and content analysis to the appropriation of data in order to verify, through the analysis of various official sources, the goals and purposes of the institution throughout its life cycle, as well as the political and social context involving each period. As a research poposition it was established the research and analysis of the entire set of references, academic studies and official documents on the overall life cycle of the SRO, however, limiting the research in discussions and activities between 1958 and 1964. During the investigation, it was noted that scientific studies on this institution, generalized their analysis and findings, by claiming that the SRO had a linear historical trajectory with a main purpose of contributing to the project of coercion and conformation of unionized workers, as proposed in the forties, during the Estado Novo. This study challenges this understanding, stating that the SRO subverted the logic of the Brazilian worker conformation proposed by its creators, and during the period between 1958 and 1964, its objectives and actions aimed to a participatory management model that sought voluntary participation, awareness and emancipation of the unionized worker in Brazil, for the choice of activities to be undertaken in their free working time. It is expected that the results and conclusions presented in this thesis, arranged narrative information, documentary evidence and bibliographical sources to allow a new understanding of the history of recreation and working on the Recreational Service for Workers in Brazil.

Full textIn a Vygotskyan perspective, concepts are conceptual relations systems contained within words that emerge in a generalization process, originated from human praxis. Subjects throughout their development process internalize concepts. Therefore, concepts are elaborations associated with the subjects\' dynamic experiential processes and should not be described as an unchangeable, isolated list of attributes. Nevertheless, whether at high school or university level, the concept of time is considered only as an abstract mathematical parameter during Physics teaching. This practice indicates that both in-service and pre-service Physics teachers are marked with simple numerical and mathematical concept of time. In order to investigate the development of this mark in the teacher training process, interviews were conducted with pre-service teachers in different samples of undergraduate Physics teachers\' courses. We made a non-exhaustive review of the meanings of time in the History of Science, which are present in the curricular contents of undergraduate Physics teachers\' courses. With this study, we present a possible contribution of the Cultural Historical Activity Theory to reveal part of the complexity of the concept of time. A study of the undergraduate Physics teachers\' courses was made to investigate the conditions under these meanings are present and about what kind of activity they are explored. For the analysis of the interviews, we built an instrument based on both Vygotsky\'s genetic scales and the dimensions of the complex conceptual profile model. Through this instrument, we were able to identify the meanings in order to investigate characters and values assigned through the concept of time by pre-service Physics teachers, throughout their university degree.

Full textThis research detects relations and contradictions between labor and leisure. It points out some factors, in the present conditions of paid labor, that are showing the limits and possibilities for the existence of free time with leisure in the life of the workers in the historically established reality of a metal-mechanics industry located in the town of Jaraguá do Sul, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This XX company was chosen as the locus for investigation because it had a production base with advanced technology and has adopted gymnastics in the company during its internal work period. One group of workers in one of its factories is also part of this investigation. The data was gathered by means of 118 questionnaires and 120 interviews held on the factory floor, in addition to some important direct observations, within and outside the factory. We have devoted special attention to what occurs on Saturdays and Sundays, when we seek to perceive the leisure practiced outside the factory. Furthermore, we utilize documents that were made available by the factory directors, with whom we have conversed on several occasions, as well as section heads, workers and other people in the town. The interest in this study concerning the utilization of the labor-leisure connection, is justified inasmuch as there exists a general opinion that technologically developed basis of production, along with the presence of bodily exercise during the working hours, promotes leisure, and that up to now there has been no known research on this problem based on analyses of empirical data. In this way we perceive, from the data that was collected that gymnastics in the company gives evidence of the body that produces and the body that plays. However, we found that this practice serves as a work organization technology, which guarantees productivity by restoring the equilibrium and rest of the body. The theoretical basis supporting the analysis considers aspects that provide a clearer understanding of recent changes that have taken place in labor process. Production restructuring engenders gymnastics in the company and expresses the adaptation of the toyotism forms to the industrializing process in Brazil. Actually, the assimilation of the model in that company is carried out in a hybrid manner and has been taking place since the 1970s. In the life of the people in the group that was investigated when they were away from the work environment, we found the absence of the body that plays. In these conditions, the workers have no time for themselves, time to be used for leisure. Furthermore, we found that a contradiction in the labor organization process, since it includes gymnastics in the company and shows the body that plays, even though the body is absent or the worker is outside his body. In this way we could see that the organization process in which these workers are inserted limits the existence of free time with leisure in their lives, and that the clocked time of their factory commands the entire concrete existence of these people, both inside and outside the factory. Free time with leisure but without unemployment constitutes a promise of happiness, which is possible, although it still has no concrete existence.

This study aims to measure the duration of court cases involving education social rights, seeing how this time affects the enjoyment of those rights. In order to achieve such objectives I identified and analyzed the legal cases, since its entry in a state court until the date of the trial session of Court of Appeals of Minas Gerais. Subsidiary this work also identified who the litigants are, the influence of granting injunctions in the duration of the processes, the time variation of the process based on the location of the county in which the process begins and the existence of dead steps in court proceedings. The assumption that guided the study is the possibility of extinction of certain rights, such as the right of places in day care and the right to access public higher education free of charge, in face of an excessive length of time of the lawsuit.

The thesis presents a historical description of the various initiatives in leisure-time education which were carried out in the city of Girona during the current century up to the year 1981. The research begins with the first infant and the junior free-time activities which took place in this city, and analyses more than thirty different initiatives throughout the century until the year 1981, when the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional government of Catalonia) took charge of operations in this sector and formulated the first legislation concerning free-time schools and the training of monitors and head teachers.
The historical research is presented in three main chapters which analyze the proposals and activities carried out by government (municipal, provincial, regional or national, the Catholic church (mainly at a diocesan level, but also through some parish initiatives) and civil society, combining in this last category those initiatives proposed by private bodies and by the associative movement. The research is especially focused on summer activities (schools, centers, camps, etc.) and studies, among other things, their aims, their methodological proposals, the training of staff, and the children and young people who participated. The intention is to contribute material which is valid for a deeper reflection on leisure-time education and which will help to configure a small part of the history on non-formal education.

Full textThe dissertation describes a crucial step in the development of a modern writer's identity in Sweden. It applies the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of the autonomous ”literary field” to the development in eighteen-eighties, one of the most important periods in Swedish literary history.
During this decade a large group of authors appeared, with August Strindberg in the front. In accordance with the dominating esthetical view of the nineteenth century, ”ideal realism”, the writers had an ethical responsibility. But they differed from their predecessors by not being loyal to the bourgeois society and its values, as codified in the concept of ”decency”, that contained, among other things, rules for what could be said in public. On the contrary, the new generation of authors attacked the bourgeoisie in novels, dramas and articles, especially in the singularly most controversial area, the regulation of sexuality and the ideals of bourgeois women.
This study argues that the new authors in their radical criticism aimed at the position of power in society traditionally upheld by the State church, which supervised education and ethical values. They did this by creating a role for themselves as young and oppressed, something that made it possible to deny any responsibility for the present state and furthermore to speak up, despite their own bourgeois background, for other oppressed groups like the working classes, the poor and women. But this also meant that they could not be successful in their ambitions to gain influence without loosing their identity. This was especially the consequence of the fact that an autonomous ”literary field” did not yet exist. That is, there were no internal literary institutions that, seemingly independent of the rest of society, decided what was ”good literature.” Instead, the singularly most important judge of interesting literature was the bourgeois public. Strindberg seems to have realised this early, and achieved an identity as ”uncontrolled”. He thereby lost his intellectual credibility, but gained a much bigger freedom to write and also got the attention of the large audience. At the same time, his writing undermined the values of decency by breaking the bourgeois society’s fundamental wall between the private and the public sphere, not least by writing what was regarded as facts about his own private life.
The conservative reaction accelerated towards the end of the decade while the authors grew more and more bitter about the public’s lack of understanding. At this point the author Verner von Heidenstam took the opportunity to declare a new literary era, dissociating his aesthetics from the one of the Eighties and proclaiming the necessity of an aristocratic, ethically indifferent literature (with himself as its leader).
Confronted with the new concept of what ought to be regarded as “modern”, the established male authors were generally quick to separate themselves from the female authors, and to identify the attacked literature solely with the one that critically discussed the situation of women in society - a description that has been largely adopted in the history of literature. A number of male authors also wrote novels separating themselves from the Eighties. Thus, they could continue into the new period, while female authors in general were silenced or forced to write in less esteemed genres (”popular literature”, children’s books).
Ultimately the result was a more distinct male domination coupled with a growing contempt for the large audience. This, in turn, created a need for internal institutions that could interpret, value and support literature - scholarships, elitist critics, and a writers’ union. These institutions subsequently were founded or developed during the nineties – all of them steps towards autonomy.
