Ngoma, Athuman M. K. "Characterisation and Consolidation of Historical Lime Mortars in Cultural Heritage Buildings and Associated Structures in East Africa." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Betongbyggnad, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-11371.

Abstract:
For the period of several centuries, the influence of several distinct cultures produced rich and diverse cultural heritage that we see today in East Africa countries. The most tangible remains of these heritages are stone built buildings and structures including, palaces, mosques, residential houses and tombs. At present, these heritages are in different physical state, some are in relatively good condition while many are in an appalling condition. The presence of these historical monuments has benefited these countries economically and culturally therefore, it is essential to ensure that these monuments continue to exist. Material characterisation of the historical buildings and associated structures was used to develop a suitable method of intervention that is sympathetic to the original materials. Mortar is the most damaged material therefore, historical mortar from Stone Town historical buildings and associated structures has been characterised by visual examination, optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction and hydrostatic weighing and the results have been compared. The historical mortar is mainly comprised of calcite, quartz and feldspar. The mortar condition has been divided into hard mortar, soft mortar and, soft and friable mortar. The deteriorated mortar that required consolidation is soft mortar and, soft and friable mortar with a porosity of approximately 27%. Calcium hydroxide solution (limewater) has been selected as consolidant and the consolidation procedure involves two steps. Firstly a limewater impregnation procedure has been developed and secondly, the effect of limewater treatment has been determined. For the application procedure it has been observed that, when limewater comes into contact with calcium carbonate a precipitation reaction occurs and that is the cause of poor penetration ability of calcium hydroxide solution. Major influencing factors on the penetration ability of calcium hydroxide solution have been established as, application method and absorption capacity of the treated material during the impregnation process. Optimization of the penetration ability of calcium hydroxide solution has been achieved by impregnating from the middle of the impregnated specimen. Sugar has been used to study the influence of additive on enhancing calcium hydroxide solubility. It has been verified that solubility of calcium hydroxide in a solution of sugar is proportional to the amount of sugar in the solution. Porosity and strength tests have been used to study the effectiveness of calcium hydroxide treatment. Under the conditions studied no appreciable change of porosity has been detected. It is postulated that the calcium hydroxide was deposited at the binder/aggregate interface and at the secondary pores. In terms of strength, evidence has been found to suggest the strength increment varies quantitively with the amount of calcite crystals deposited.

Andreozzi, Michele. "Seismic protection of buildings of historical/cultural interest through the use of vibrating barriers." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019.

Abstract:
Recent earthquake events pointed out the problematic of protecting existing buildings from the catastrophic effects of earthquakes. The current strategies for vibration are successfully employed in the design of new structures; on the other hand, they are rarely used for protecting existing buildings, because they generally require substantial alteration of the original structure. In this thesis, a novel device called vibrating barrier, (ViBa), is implemented for the seismic protection of an historical building: the Bell Tower of the Messina Cathedral. This device is able to reduce the dynamic response of a target building without being physically connected to it. The dynamic behaviour of the system has been studied through the construction of a detailed FE Model that allowed to derive the response of the structure and to study the existing influences between the buildings and the effect of the soil. Hence, a simplified mathematical model has been constructed, and the pertinent parameters have been computed by the employment of an Identification Process. Moreover, the mechanical parameters of the ViBa have been derived through an Optimization Process in order to reduce a selected response parameter of the bell tower, under an input ground motion modelled as Gaussian Stochastic Process compatible with the Messina response spectrum. Hence, parametric analyses have been carried out in order to investigate the influence of the mass of the device on the efficiency. Spectrum-compatible artificial accelerograms have been generated and a significant average reduction of the maximum displacements of 25% has been achieved, together with a decrease of 40% of the shear forces in the bell tower. Due to large masses involved, alternative solutions have been proposed against the problems related to a real-life implementation of the device, and the beneficial effects given by the coupling of the ViBa with a set of mechanical inerters have been demonstrated.

Abstract:
The centralised control over curriculum framing and pedagogy, the generally poor quality of teaching with little sensitivity to children’s sociocultural environment; and very high drop out rates, even at the primary school level, are some of the challenges facing school education in many of the regions of India. However, one of the successful approaches to these challenges has been the Digantar school system, working in rural communities. The study is based in one Digantar School in Rajasthan and employs concepts derived from the Vygotskian tradition to interrogate the methods employed in Digantar school system. The study took Edwards’ (2010a, 2011, 2012) idea of common knowledge and Hedegaard’s (2008, 2012, 2013) idea of institutional demand in practices as conceptual lenses through which to investigate the components of the pedagogical practices that help Digantar teachers to align the motives of the school with those of the child in classroom activities. In doing so it analyses the institutional practices that lead to the development of common knowledge that in turn facilitates how teachers engage pupils as learners. Data were gathered over six months and comprised around 120 hours of school-based video data together with interviews and detailed observations with teachers and community members. Data were gathered in classrooms, teacher meetings, meetings between parents and teachers and at school-community meetings. Analyses focused on the construction of common knowledge and the use made of it by the school to achieve a mutual alignment of motives between the practices of the school with the community and the families. The study has revealed that teachers’ engagement with the knowledge and motives of other teachers and community members helped to create common knowledge, i.e. an understanding of what mattered for each participating group, which facilitated teaching-learning in the school. The analysis also points towards a form of democracy, which enhances children’s participation in their learning. It was found that building and sharing of common knowledge and creating a socially articulated ‘space of reasons’ (Derry 2008) produced a pedagogical model that engaged children in creating their social situation of development, seeking and recognising the curriculum demands being placed on them.

Abstract:
To use existing buildings that would otherwise be empty could be a part of the solution regarding the housing shortage in Sweden. When changing older buildings, it is important to consider the cultural and architectural values. When changing usage to dwellings and improving energy efficiency it is important that it is carried out carefully on older valuable buildings. The purpose of the work is to contribute to an increased understanding of how the architectural and cultural-historical values of an older building can be preserved despite a change in use from one function to another. The goal of the work is to examine how a cultural-historical valuable building can be changed to functional dwellings in conjunction with reduced energy usage. The work is based on a case study of a school building from 1850 in Vanstad, Skåne.   An introducing review of theory is a bout older building and installation solution, cultural value and qualities in dwellings. Which acquis to follow during reconstruction and change of usage, design requirements according to BBR and actions to reduce energy usage. Four different studies regarding reduction in energy usage on older brick buildings are studied. The case study building is not K-marked but is pointed out as a valuable building that is worth preserving in documents from Sjöbo. It is recommended that buildings constructed before the 1900s should be kept as authentic as possible.   Based on information gathered through inventory of archive material and inventory of the case study building a description on the case study building is made which is the basis for a design proposal for changed usage from school building to housing. Sjöbo is requesting smaller apartments which the design proposal considers. The design proposal resulted in 7 apartments where 6 out of 7 has a living space between 35 m2 and 55 m2. Because of the buildings age and older building techniques the building does not reach todays energy requirement. The design proposal documents which actions that is possible to implement to reduce the energy usage. Every apartment is reviewed to control which qualities is achieved in the dwellings. The measures advocated is: additional insulation on walls and roof, sealing of the climate shell, change of ventilations system, heating system, installation of solar cells and improvement of window and doors.   The result shows how it is possible to design functional dwellings in an older cultural-historical valuable building. To apply energy efficiency measures to reduce the energy usage and improving the indoor climate is also demonstrated in the result. Regarding profitability considering reconstruction, changed usage, reduction in energy usage and design of dwellings more in-depth studies could be made regarding the actual energy savings and LCC calculations for further economic insight.

Abstract:
The work aims to increase knowledge of the medieval roof structures and how they are built. By making an inventory and building survey of two roof structures in medieval churches. The result of the study is intended to increase knowledge of this type of building, its cultural-historical values and provide a basis for long-term and sustainable management. The two churches are Drevs gamla kyrka (The old church of Drev) and Hemmesjös gamla kyrka (The old church of Hemmesjö), both are in Småland Sweden. The churches are well-preserved and have a history to tell through themselves. The study was possible through onsite study, article study and two interviews with Samuel Palmblad, Kulturparken Småland and Mattias Hallgren, Traditionsbärarna. The results have shown that the churches are built in a Romanic style which is an architectural expression on a building technology used during the early medieval time (12th century), with one part of the old church of Hemmesjö being built by using a later found building technology also called gothic style which was more common during late medieval time. During the interviews it was mentioned that these churches are heritage to Sweden and therefore need to be treated accordingly. There is still knowledge to be found and understood which will help with the preservation of the churches and their historical value. If the knowledge does not exist, there can be faults that happen which means that the values can be lost or misused which will lead to the destruction of a part of history. With little to no documents from the time they were built, it will be difficult to maintain for the people who work with the preservation if responsibility is not taken to learn more about these churches.  This study will look at the importance of preserving these churches and their roof constructions with the help of explaining the building technology and the culture-historical values.

Monti, Francesca. "Lighting of University lecture halls:a Design Proposal for Palazzo Malvezzi - Campeggi." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/21143/.

Full text
Abstract:
Many university lecture halls in Bologna are based inside historic buildings and noble palaces, not designed for students as they are built for a different purpose. The daylight contribution in the rooms is usually not sufficient to satisfy the requirements for school premises; moreover, artificial lighting mainly consists in lamps with high consumption and low performances. Under these conditions the student's visual comfort is not optimal. The following work is based on the open site analysis about the state of art of some university classrooms and their led re-design. The case studies are the lecture halls of Palazzo Malvezzi-Campeggi in Bologna, including the two noble halls on the main floor and the Aula Magna. It has been possible to interact with the acoustic component, not treated here, developing an integrated project able to meet the needs of both parties. The classrooms were qualified through simulations with lighting design software, in accordance with EN 12464, analyzing the daylight factor and the visual comfort parameters.

Abstract:
Renewal of the Mill Grounds in Tasovice project presents a strategy of a feasible approach to the buildings with a historical value in baroque landscapes of the South Moravia. In three steps the project consequently restores the life and re-joins torn socio-cultural interconnections in a municipality affected by destiny of the Sudetenland landscapes. The strategy derives from local singularities and cultural heritage. In the first phase a mini-brewery and confectionery come into existence. This reflects already existing phenomenons in the municipality. The second phase brings restaurant with variable cultural space, emphasizing local patriotism. In the third phase, the Mill Grounds are extended by services, such as accomodation, events and workshops, info centre, and open itself to the tourism. Presented project preserves current constructions and structures as much as possible and lets excell the structures with a historical value. The original historical constructions are handled in traditional materials (brick, stone, wood), new structures are in glas and corten metal.

Abstract:
This report is the result of a degree project in building engineering, at an advanced level. The project evaluated a building from a technical and historical point of view, and focused on its energy consumption, particularly the energy used for heating. The building in question was a small apartment building in Strömsholm, Sweden. It was made in 1902, from vertical logs, a not so common form of the traditional log house. The goal of the project was to evaluate if the energy consumption could be reduced in accordance with building preservation regulations, that is without damaging any of the building’s cultural or historical values. The building was surveyed with the help of archive and literature studies, interviews and inspections. Based on these findings, supplementary insulation on the inner side of the climate screen was decided on. The program IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was used to make computer simulations of the energy consumption of the building for five different alternatives of supplementary insulation. Part of the project was also to investigate whether IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was suitable for energy simulations of old buildings. The moisture balance of the outer walls was calculated manually to see if the supplemental insulation constituted a risk when it came to the moisture sensitivity of the construction. The result of the computer simulations, combined with building physics, shows that the energy consumption for heating could be reduced, especially if the roof was to be insulated. However, these results cannot and should not be seen as anything but indications, because of the uncertainty of the input data. The data on ventilation and air flows was considered to be one of the main sources of error. Furthermore, there were signs that the design of the computer models was far from optimal. The result of the moisture calculations shows that the moisture sensitivity is indeed increased. IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was judged as more suitable for simulations of new buildings than of old ones, due to the complexity of the latter, but the program can still be used as an aid for energy evaluations of old buildings if it is used in the right way.

Abstract:
Background: Historical buildings in Sweden with the highest value of cultural heritage are administrated by the state and are protected by the directive SFS 2013:588. Also there are laws which demands that all public buildings which are administrated by the government should be accessible for everyone, with or without disabilities. This law also demands that in case of fire all visitors should be able to evacuate safely, including people with disabilities. This may be problematic to achieve without damaging the cultural value. Aim: The aim of this work is therefore to investigate a safe way for people with disabilities to evacuate in case of fire in buildings with high cultural value in Sweden, which are administrated by the state, with focus on the technical solutions. The aim is also to investigate improvement measures for the studied buildings and the laws in Sweden regarding the subject. Method: This work in bases on a literature study and a case study. The purpose of the literature study was to identify the previous studies and background information which was needed to find solutions to the problem. The case study were constructed to see how technical solutions are incorporated in actual buildings, but also to see how the evacuation can improve. Results: The work shows that all buildings in the case study has a sufficient evacuation plan for people with disabilities, but could be improved especially for people with visual disabilities without destroying the cultural heritage. Conclusion: One conclusion is that the focus often lies on technical solutions to make it possible for people with mobility impairments to evacuate, but the needs of people with visual disabilities are often overlooked. Therefore the laws regarding the subject should clarified that all people with disabilities also should have the same possibility to evacuate safety. Another conclusion is that it is possible to implement technical solutions in historical buildings without significantly destroying the cultural value. However, more research is required to develop new and improved solutions for these type of buildings.

Abstract:
Urban conservation (or heritage conservation in the urban setting), by its nature, imposes irreversible and enduring impacts on the built environment and urban fabrics. While conservation of individual monuments of indisputable historic and cultural significance often ignites heated debates, protests and resistance movements, the episodic conservation efforts of everyday architectures and heritage assets woven in the urban setting are often overlooked. Evidently within the rapidly changing context of urban China, which is virtually a contested ground for the struggles of many marginalized social groups and the upholding of local values and lived experiences amid the globalization waves and economic development, the urban conservation practice has not been systematically evaluated, monitored nor reviewed from an integrated perspective. This fittingly calls for the utility of French philosopher Henri Lefebvre’s triadic “conceived – perceived – lived” spatial framework, which has been proven useful in discerning the spatial changes and power interplays embedded in the process and outcome of the production and re-production of space. As suggested in the title, the application of the Lefebvrian spatial framework in this research endeavor is manifold, in both spatial and temporal senses: First, to discern how the concerned space was historically produced; Then, to examine how the space has been re-produced (as in produced for the second time) in the conservation processes and outcomes; At the same time, to paradoxically explore whether and how the space has been reproduced (as in organically and biologically conceived, given birth and nurtured) to perpetuate for a sustainable future; Ultimately, to investigate how urban conservation efforts can possibly facilitate or impact on the preservation, integration and transformation of space from a physical construct to a mental construct in the urban restructuring processes across China today. To this end, two fundamentally different yet very telling case study sites of urban conservation in Shanghai, the forefront city of China, have been identified, namely, Xintiandi and Tianzifang. They represent the market-driven conservation approach and the community-initiated conservation approach respectively, and both have deep-rooted causal relationships with the economic and developmental boom and evolution of urban conservation practice in Shanghai, and China as a whole. Through a comparative analysis of the two case studies, this research endeavor examines, individually and collectively, what the driving forces and the evolving relationships of the key players are behind the conservation efforts, and whose interests have been represented in the conservation processes, whether the lived environments, routines and experiences have been identified, respected and conserved; thereby summarizing the salient issues facing urban conservation efforts in China today, and reflecting upon how urban conservation practice can contribute to the sustainability of urban development and redevelopment in Chinese cities and beyond.

Abstract:
The content of this thesis is premised on a reflexive examination of some historical juxtapositions culminating in critical aspects of being Māori in the twenty first century and how such aspects have informed contemporary indigenous identity. That is, the continuing acknowledgement and exponential public recognition of critical concepts which inextricably link indigenous and civic identity. The theoretical sources for this research are, in the main, derived from anthropological and religious studies, particularly on the significance of mythologies and oral histories, as well as from the oral theorising of elders in Aotearoa New Zealand. A very significant contribution from one such elder, a senior Māori woman academic, has been included in the form of the transcript of an interview. She herself had collected the views of a number of elders on myth, creating a rare and valuable resource. In the interview she married her reflections on these with her own experiences and her cogent analyses. From the outset, it was necessary to be discerning so as to ensure the thesis workload was manageable and realistic. For this reason the selected critical aspects that have been used to frame this research are (1) a developing Western validation (that is, acknowledgement and respect) of Māori, Māori culture and their mythology; (2) oral history (genealogy) and traditions that have remained constant despite the influences of modernity; and (3) notions of fluidity, negotiation and pragmatism regarding kinship legacies and cultural heritage. The thesis is comprised of six chapters starting from a subjective narrative leading through increasingly objective discourses that culminate in a conclusion which supports a belief that modern Māori require a balancing of critical aspects of cultural heritage, with a broad understanding of the world of the 'other', in order to realise and develop their contemporary indigenous identity. Ultimately, indigenous ideologies, practices and knowledge recorded and examined in the world of academia today, become potential resources for tomorrow. The intention of this research is to aggregate and discuss intrinsic aspects of the Māori past as well as developing aspects of the present, in order to better understand the significance of the future, and to add to the growing corpus of indigenous worldviews.

Abstract:
There is a great determination towards an increased accessibility in today’s society.  This creates some problems, when the building in question is a historic building of cultural significance, due to legislations and protective regulations. This thesis is executed as research for The National Property Board Sweden (SFV), who deals with these kinds of difficulties daily. The objective of this theses was to explore the influence of accessibility adaptation on cultural values in historic buildings from the 19th century, with a focus on doorways. The aim is also to identify possible faults and weaknesses that could cause a loss in cultural values. The study is based on a literature review and observations of eight doorways in the historical buildings Gamla Riksarkivet, Kungliga Operan, Linneanum and Uppsala Universitetshus. For each doorway actions and procedures have been identified and categorized based on the affected cultural values using two different evaluation models. The visual changes are, according to the result, the most frequent reason behind the affected cultural values that has been studied. The increase in social reforms and legislation about accessibility are the result of a changing society that has altered its preceptions of disabilities. This could be traced back as one of the major reasons that might be behind the loss of cultural values. Accessible environments are important, we should however consider that the cultural heritage is poorly accessible for a reason. It has been discovered that the studied archive files and documents have a lack of information, what actions and procedures the building had endured are vague. The amount of details explaining the procedures and justification of the actions are also limited, especially in the permit applications from SFV and its resolve from RAÄ. In order to facilitate the issue of how the legislation for accessibility and cultural values should be interpreted, policy documents of how the laws should relate to each other are required.

The importance of preserving historical buildings has been recognized around the world. In recent years, the transformation and adaption of historical buildings have been popular topics of discussions. People are asking the government and organizations to pay more attention to those buildings and their heritages. The government has made a remarkable progress in promoting and supporting adaptive reuse of the historical buildings since the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act was carried out in 1982. A number of organizations and scholars have also introduced ideas from the other countries, hoping to make it an ongoing development. On the other hand, as the original purposes of those buildings no longer exist in the modern world, how to reuse and develop new purposes for them have become an important issue. The present study focused on the adaptive reuse and preservation of the historical buildings, with cultural tourism as the proposed idea. Literature analysis was carried out with relating topics, such as the preservation of historical buildings, the reuse of old buildings and cultural tourism, being searched in the data base. Several successful cases in Taiwan were also studied to understand their features and process of preservation. For example, the Old Lin’s Department Store in Tainan. Furthermore, Interviews with the government staff, cultural organizations and scholars were conducted based on the following three main perspectives, cultural heritage preservation, the reuse and cultural tourism development of the local historical buildings and the challenges and suggestions that come with them. With the content of the interviews along with the literature analysis, this study may provide the government with information and ideas regarding the preservation and adaptive reuse of historical buildings. Historical building preservation has been a popular topic in recent years, and there will be more and more cases of preserving and reusing them. The present study helped provide different perspectives to this issue in hope that there will be better ideas when giving new identities to more old buildings. The reuse of historical building has become a positive practice in recent years. To reuse these historical buildings as restaurants space is a newly and popular tactic since year 2000 because multitude usually take much time to stay in the space so that can shorten the distance between multitude and historical buildings, and increase operating profit. In Taiwan, the reuse of historical buildings as restaurants space doesn’t only provide them a new life but also create a new consumer style combining culture, dining and architecture that give customer a newborn consumer place and creative a new complex consumer vocabulary. This paper will discuss the relationship between the “customer” and historical buildings according to the requirement of customer in case of reusing them as a restaurant space. The issues include two parts, “human” and “culture”. The human issue focuses on the relation of multitude and dining space based on “function”, “Physical” and “psychology”, and the culture issue concerns the interaction of customer and society in view of “politics”, “history” and “consumer”. Also, this paper will discuss the design factor including “environment”, “esthetics” and “technology” from the relation of “designer” and “substance space” when the historical buildings and spots are reused as restaurant space. The environment issue argues how the dining space connects and interacts with the environment based on the viewpoint of “location” and “environment”. The esthetics debates the space modeling and ambiance construction in terms of “modeling”, “space present” and “light performance”. Finally, the technology discusses the construction method according to the “structure”, “building material” and “environment system”. This thesis quotes a concept of “degrees of intervention”, which is used for preserving the historical buildings, to expound several examples of historical buildings being reused in restaurants purpose. The first level of tactic of historical buildings is “Protection’’ and “Maintenance’’. The second level is “Maintenance’’ and “Stabilization’’. The third level is “Maintenance’’、“Removal’’ and “Restoration’’. The fourth level is “Destruction’’ and “Reconstruction’’. This paper uses the four degrees of intervention to discuss the consumer in the humane issue and the designer in the substance space, and illustrates several abroad cases to realize the actual state of historical buildings being reused in restaurants purpose.

Culture is the cumulative deposit and collective performance of human experience. Its value comes from the integration of the physical aspects and the spiritual aspects. Through history, people focus on economic activities. In addition to transaction and trading, the most essential part of economic activities lies in the physical aspect that converts products and the company culture into common values or even indispensable component in our lives. During its 1600-year history, Quemoy's has gone through the humanities and wars from Eastern Jin Dynasty to early Republic of China. It merges all its characteristics - the local humanities, historic monuments, war fields, the folk custom and wine products - and creates its own unique and fascinating culture. Recently, the preservation of Quemoy's culture heritage focuses on the restoration and maintenance of historic monuments and thereby promoting local tourism/economy development, resulting in a gap among the very practice and the value and meaning of Quemoy's culture. This study is expected to explore the application of visual design and brand marketing concept as a medium to extend and showcase Quemoy's cultural values. The study proceeds with three aspects. First, it not only discusses the correlation between cultural perception and market behaviors, but also explores design strategies and initial process based on CIS concept. Secondly, it focuses its attention on analysis of example design, including the concept in foreign cases, the instances of Quemoy's enterprise identification that embeds local spirit, and the contest works that shows the cultural meaning of Quemoy's historic monuments. Thirdly, it investigates the relationship within the design process, and uses the results as the basic direction for people maintaining and developing the fundamental spirit and driving force of Quemoy's cultural assets, and thereby brings new life into Quemoy's cultural heritage, activates the local economy and realizes this dual emphasis of culture and life. The findings in this study: Based on the cultural value and spirit, this study provides the direction of brand planning and creates design process of visual identification. First, this study collects related data about foreign cases and analyzes their cultural characteristic and design goals. Secondly, according to the cultural special feature of a specific region and regional resources and activities, it analyze the relation between the development of community and its culture, and thus find out the design process that may have much potential power in culture.

Abstract Taiwanese society has ever been a typical immigrant culture style. Pioneers in each generation adventured to land this unknown island from the other side of the ocean for reclaiming, settling, propagating, and rooting here in Taiwan. In the process, different rulers unceasingly emerged, but the rank and file was confined by terrain and transportation and obliged to agglomerate various clans’ geo-cultures and blood relationships under a circumstance of continuous changing masters. Not until the colonial reign of Japanese Imperialism, could the main artery of communications between north and south be connected, nevertheless, oppression and discrimination of the inferior colony forced the Taiwanese to start considering the issue of personal identity. To construct Taiwan as the most successful model of colony and as the base to move into other regions in Asia under Japan’s South Forward Policy, Japanese Imperialism adopted the “Policy of National Assimilation” in an attempt to yield all people obedience to the Mikado--- the emperor of Japan. Therefore, their educational institutions became the most powerful brain-washing site; through the primary education and the spiritual call to establish new living habit and national language, the road for obedient citizen was foreseeable. The educational result to change and influence unobtrusively and imperceptibly was stunning. Under the colonial reign of Japanese Imperialism, the Taiwanese had been subject to the obscurant policy for fifty years; such an enslaving system, even the pain caused by bloody suppression would have turned into waning and vanishing, but the evil legacy of imperialized education has still remained to date. Under the Japanese’s enslaving policy and colonial culture operation, it was lament for the transition course of Taiwanese’s self-consciousness and cultural identity during the discriminative education. We are hereby, through the researching orientation on educational culture and architectural level, expecting to explore the Taiwanese’s educational method from Qing Dynasty to Japanese colony and to identify the Taiwanese’s transition and influence, further to regress the ethnic groups’ culture and clarify the reconstructed truth.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
The landscape of James A. Garfield’s Mentor, Ohio home (now preserved at James A. Garfield National Historic Site) contains multiple layers of historical meanings and values. The landscape as portrayed in political biographies, political cartoons, and other ephemera during Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign reveals the existence of the dual cultural values of agrarian tradition and agricultural progress in the late nineteenth century. Although Garfield did not depend on farming exclusively for his livelihood, he, like many agriculturalists of this era participated in a process of mediation between these dual values. The function of the landscape of Garfield’s farm between 1876 and 1880 is a reflection of this process of mediation. After President Garfield’s assassination in 1881, his wife and children returned to their Mentor home. Between 1885 and c. 1905, Garfield’s widow Lucretia made numerous changes to the agricultural landscape, facilitating the evolution of the home from farm to country estate. Despite the rich history of this landscape, its cultural complexity and evolution over time makes it difficult to interpret for public audiences. Additionally, the landscape is currently interpreted exclusively through indoor museum exhibits and outdoor wayside panels, two formats with severe limitations. I propose the integration of deep mapping into interpretation at James A. Garfield National historic site in order to more effectively represent the multi-layered qualities of its historic landscape.
