Purpose Contemporary standards-based reforms to teaching and teacher education are characterised by appeals to technical orientations to teacher professionalism. In addition, the standardisation agenda has targeted literacy education as a focus for interventions. This has highlighted an incongruence between standardised approaches to literacy and pedagogies and practices in subject English that have developed over time, and which represent disciplinary ways of knowing. This paper presents a synthesis of time-honoured pedagogical approaches to develop wisdom suitable to address the urgent problem-solving requirement of the modern university. AbstractMusic, like many cultural and creative industries, can be analysed from symbolic, political and economic dimensions. It is a vibrant, highly resilient sector that has continued to evolve over time from prehistory to the present. Moreover, the music industry has developed in lockstep with technology, creating fascinating business models since the inception of the Internet, forcing companies and artists to adapt continuously to the new environment. This is also related to music customers, who change their preferences as new genres and trends appear. Governments are well aware of the opportunities that music affords to local development and have created public policies that boost the sector. On the other hand, music has also proved its educational role, and its function as an identity builder, especially in local environments where music is present in many festivities in the shape of bands. Mediterranean locations have a rich tradition in this type of musical societies and groups which create a collective identity that is transmitted from one generation to the next. Finally, music has not been immune to the crisis caused by the pandemic, though it has once again shown resilience in this respect, adapting rapidly to the new economic, societal and educational challenges that are currently affecting the entire world.

AbstractThis chapter argues for the full, respectful curricular inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music in order to promote a more balanced and equitable social and cultural vision of the nation-state in Australian schools. It challenges views that claim Indigenous cultures have been irretrievably lost or are doomed to extinction, as well as the fixation on musical authenticity. We propose that the gradual broadening of Indigenous musical expressions over time and the musical renaissance of the new millennium have created an unprecedented opportunity for current music educators to experience the educative power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music. This means that culturally nonexposed music teachers can employ familiar musical-technical approaches to the music even as they begin to more fully investigate the music’s cultural-contextual meanings. The chapter considers issues that impinge on the music’s educative power, especially those relating to its definition, its intended audiences, and pedagogies. It aims to help clear the way for the classroom to become an environment in which students can sense the depth and vitality of contemporary Australian Indigenous music.

AbstractWe present the case of a 29-year-old single Bulgarian woman, Alice, who lived and worked alone in Germany at the time she presented with signs of acute psychosis, more specifically work-related paranoid ideation. She was diagnosed with Brief Psychotic Disorder and treated successfully with Perphenazine. A return to her home town in Bulgaria with concurrent discontinuation of antipsychotic treatment brought about a change in delusional content. She was now excessively preoccupied with religious themes, ancient rituals, and local traditions, and responded well to treatment with Olanzapine. Alice reluctantly returned to Germany but every time she started a new job she experienced depressive and paranoid exacerbations in spite of strict medication adherence. In the last 3 years, she has lived in Bulgaria and has been medication and episode free. We discuss the complex interaction between the experiences of expatriation, premorbid personality, and cultural values (of the patient and her family) in the etiology, course and outcome of brief psychotic disorder. We raise the possibility that contemporary Bulgarian cultural values (as described in a recent comparative international study) were important in Alice’s recovery and, as such, may have wider significance as protective factors for those at risk of mental disorder.

This chapter is the story of the authors' journey using community mapping in graduate coursework to make visible the assets in local communities through experiential learning. Community mapping is an experiential, inquiry-based ethnographic research method that can be utilized by various community members to understand a community better. In this case, teachers uncovered language and literacy present in the communities and created contextualized learning experiences by connecting students' lived realities to school instruction. The authors began with discussions around community and ethnographic projects to understand what was present in the community. This evolved to include some form of action, primarily in the form of curricular reform and critical literacy projects and/or culturally sustaining pedagogies.

With the rapid growth of the global movement and technological advancements, learners are becoming more diverse than ever before. Diverse learners come from different backgrounds, including cultures, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, language, or personality traits. These differences even increase in lecture halls and large-scale learning environments and MOOCs, which makes it difficult to accommodate the varying learners' needs. Failing to address their needs and teach inclusively may constitute a common challenge for diverse learners to understand and communicate adequately in the classrooms. To bridge the learning gap, there is a need for pedagogical transformation to ensure effective, meaningful, and inclusive learning for all. This can happen by adopting innovative pedagogies and integrating digital learning tools to calibrate different educational options and integrate multiple paths of learning to meet these variations. This chapter will present the concept of inclusive pedagogy and explore its principles in large-scale learning environments.
