Abstract:
It is a well-known fact that organized crime has developed into an international network that, spanning from the simple ‘grave diggers’ up to powerful and wealthy white-collar professionals, makes use of money laundering, fraud and forgery. This criminal chain, ultimately, damages and dissipates our cultural identity and, in some cases, even fosters terrorism or civil unrest through the illicit trafficking of cultural property. The forms of ‘possession’ of Cultural Heritage are often blurred; depending on the national legislation of reference, the ownership and trade of historical and artistic assets of value may be legitimate or not. Criminals have always exploited these ambiguities and managed to place on the Art and Antiquities market items resulting from destruction or looting of museums, monuments and archaeological areas. Thus, over the years, even the most renowned museum institutions have - more or less consciously - hosted in their showcases cultural objects of illicit origin. Looting, thefts, illicit trade, and clandestine exports are phenomena that affect especially those countries rich in historical and artistic assets. That includes Italy, which has seen its cultural heritage plundered over the centuries ending up in public and private collections worldwide. This edited volume features ten papers authored by international experts and professionals actively involved in Cultural Heritage protection. Drawing from the experience of the Conference Stolen Heritage (Venice, December 2019), held in the framework of the NETCHER project, the book focuses on illicit trafficking in Cultural Property under a multidisciplinary perspective. The articles look at this serious issue and at connected crimes delving into a variety of fields. The essays especially expand on European legislation regulating import, export, trade and restitution of cultural objects; conflict antiquities and cultural heritage at risk in the Near and Middle East; looting activities and illicit excavations in Italy; the use of technologies to counter looting practices. The volume closes with two papers specifically dedicated to the thorny ethical issues arising from the publication of unprovenanced archaeological objects, and the relevance of accurate communication and openness about such topics.

Abstract:
Public surveys in Anglophone countries suggest that many individuals learn most of their history from family or cultural institutions, rather than from reading scholarship or sitting in classrooms. As histories of silenced groups, forgotten tribes, and ignored communities gain a place in the contemporary narrative of national histories, we must explore the methods and assumptions used by those who created the intellectual and legal frameworks that determine who in the past were represented as historical players and why others were not. Analyzing public policy documents can help us understand the cultural assumptions underlying historic preservation decisions. Modifying or rethinking those assumptions entirely can permit us to “dialogue across difference” and work for inclusive cultural identities in our public places.

Abstract:
This article centers around the case study of Rome's House of Memory and History to understand the politics of memory and public institutions. This case study is about the organization and politics of public memory: the House of Memory and History, established by the city of Rome in 2006, in the framework of an ambitious program of cultural policy. It summarizes the history of the House's conception and founding, describes its activities and the role of oral history in them, and discusses some of the problems it faces. The idea of a House of Memory and History grew in this cultural and political context. This article traces several political events that led to the culmination of the politics of memory and its effect on public institutions. It says that the House of Memory and History can be considered a success. A discussion on a cultural future winds up this article.

Abstract:
The fields of public history and environmental history emerged independently as professional pursuits during the 1970s. Over time, their practitioners found common ground within problems related to the built and natural environment. Spurred by challenges posed by globalization and climate change, public environmental historians increasingly embraced a transnational perspective. The broad range and scope of public environmental history reflect the diversity of the field’s patrons (including government agencies, courts of law, and cultural and scientific institutions) and the spectrum of concerns associated with society’s interactions with the biophysical world, including pollution, loss of biodiversity, overpopulation, water scarcity, food security, and sustainability.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the experiences and impact of returnees, expats, sojourners, and migrants on the public life, culture, and institutions of their respective societies. It argues that their role has been crucial in shaping major political, social, and cultural transformations. Particularly, the chapter analyzes the varied institutional imprint of many of these individuals, and how they impacted culture and public discourse. The core issues addressed are the role of cultural expressions and academic contributions to the reconstruction and democratization of culture; the contribution of exiled and returning intellectuals and academics to postdictatorial cultural and academic spheres; and the returnees’ contributions in reshaping institutions, particularly higher education. Underpinning these issues is the politics of memory and oblivion, addressed throughout this study, and the impact of human displacement on the reconstitution of ideas, values, and representation and, in turn, their social, political, and institutional consequences.

Full text
Abstract:
A Cultural History of Memory in the Nineteenth Century comprises scholarly inquiry into representations of memory and historical cultures during the ‘long nineteenth century’. In the era that invented photography, revised the history of the earth, and saw innovative communication and transportation technologies transform the experience of time and distance, both personal and collective memories were translated into new forms of expression. Material cultures of memory produced relics and souvenirs within institutions such as museums and archives dedicated to preservation, while commemorative practices expanded within both the private sphere and the growing public sphere, generating monuments and memorials while erasing other stories about the meaning of the past. Innovative writers and thinkers creatively engaged ‘memory’ in ways which continue to shape psychology, history and literature today. In this volume, thematic chapters survey representations of memory in power and politics; remembering and forgetting; time and space; media and technology; knowledge, science and education; high culture and popular culture; philosophy, religion and history; and rituals and faith practices in everyday life.

Faragher, Megan. Public Opinion Polling in Mid-Century British Literature. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192898975.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Whereas modernist writers lauded the consecrated realm of subjective interiority, mid-century writers were engrossed by the materialization of the collective mind. An obsession with group thinking was fueled by the establishment of academic sociology and the ubiquitous infiltration of public opinion research into a bevy of cultural and governmental institutions. As authors witnessed the materialization of the once-opaque realm of public consciousness for the first time, their writings imagined the potentialities of such technologies for the body politic. Polling opened new horizons for mass politics. Public Opinion Polling in Mid-Century British Literature: The Psychographic Turn traces this most crucial period of group psychology’s evolution—the mid-century—when “psychography,” a term originating in Victorian spiritualism, transformed into a scientific praxis. The imbrication of British writers within a growing institutionalized public opinion infrastructure bolstered an aesthetic turn towards collectivity and an interest in the political ramifications of meta-psychological discourse. Examining works by H.G. Wells, Evelyn Waugh, Val Gielgud, Olaf Stapledon, Virginia Woolf, Naomi Mitchison, Celia Fremlin, Cecil Day-Lewis, and Elizabeth Bowen, this book utilizes extensive archival research to trace the embeddedness of writers within public opinion institutions, providing a new explanation for the new “material” turn so often associated with interwar writing.

Abstract:
This article examines the epoch-making sense of Barack Obama’s historic election as U.S. president in 2008 and the heightened solidarity it produced, as well as the role of the mass media in creating such meanings. It first describes a sociological model of the public sphere by combining insights from field analysis and the Strong Program in cultural sociology, focusing on the theories advanced by Jürgen Habermas, Pierre Bourdieu, and Jeffrey C. Alexander. It then considers how intellectuals, acting through media institutions, define and expand public spheres before discussing the interrelationships among autonomy, rationality, and democracy. It also explores how the autonomy of cultural production can influence the autonomy of the journalistic field and, therefore, the autonomy of the political public sphere. Finally, it explains how civil society, and its public sphere institutions more specifically, produces solidarity by making distinctions between civil and uncivil things.
