Boot, Katie. "Pictures and interpretations : towards an applied semiotics." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2710.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study about the ways in which pictures can be interpreted and the ways in which they are interpreted; the latter, specifically, in a relatively remote part of Peru. Chapter II reviews an assortment of picture tests which bring to light differences in the ways pictures are perceived. Chapter III examines the specific cultural context in which a fairly informal picture test was administered. Chapter IV presents some results and asks what cultural and situational factors may have contributed to the variety in interpretations evident. The drawing of firm conclusions is precluded by the absence of any systematic approach to the interpretations or to the pictures themselves, and it is this which the second half of the study attempts to remedy; by providing a theoretical framework for the assessment of verbalized responses to pictures. Chapter V offers a definition of "picture" and locates it within a typology of indices. It also examines the notion of "visual resemblance", eventually adopting the view that any picture is infinitely ambiguous. Chapter VI introduces two methodological necessities consequent on this ambiguity: a stipulation as to the identity and the taxonomic specificity of any signified object; and a stipulation as to the spatial extension of its signifier. No other methodological content is presented. Chapter VII classifies types of verbalized responses in terms of their visual motivation, and the degree to which they interrelate the stipulated pictorial units. Chapter VIII acknowledges that signification may continue beyond the representational level. Further, postrepresentational, types of responses are classified in terms of the nature of the link maintained with the representational signified.

Shin, Priscilla Zhi-Xian. "The Semiotics and Social Practices of Constructing a "Proper" Singaporean Identity." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10982557.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the semiotic resources that Singaporeans combine, balance, and negotiate in order to enact a “proper” Singaporean identity. The analysis considers a variety of semiotic resources, ranging from fine-grained phonetic variables to language varieties to education or career paths. The meaningful organization and use of these semiotic resources are situated within Singapore’s broader sociopolitical discourses of nationhood, that is, how Singaporeans perceive themselves as a nation and citizens of that nation according to participation—or non-participation—in institutional discourses. I show how the notion of being “proper” as well as evaluations of “properness” are associated with social and linguistic practices that index (Silverstein 2003) meanings of being global and local, often simultaneously or in balance. Furthermore, this work extends Eckert’s (2008) concept of indexical fields , acknowledging that variables index multiple social meanings, any one of which have the potential to be activated in use. In the enactment of a “proper” identity, I investigate how these meanings are continuously co-constructed in interaction (Bucholtz and Hall 2005).

The (re-)production of “proper” ways of speaking and being are part of the processes of enregisterment (Agha 2007), via a semiotic repertoire, which is then available for public circulation and performable cultural models of behavior. This work examines the range and flexibility of resources that constitute a semiotic repertoire through a combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses—connecting macro-level discourses, such as the circulation of sociocultural stereotypes, to variation in speakers’ day to day language use, including micro-level investigations, such as the perception of voice onset time in Singapore English. This work highlights the many ways in which social identities and meanings are contextualized in and emerge out of interactions that regiment and discipline the behaviors of the self and others.

This is a study of an event, the twiza, a form of co-operative work regulated by codified practice ('rf), with the focus being on the way the event is managed (or even created) by talk, especially the talk of the leader or cix. Various kinds of indirection, especially the genre of "teasing" (tqcab), are seen to be crucial to understanding how the cix orchestrates talk in pursuit of his goals, alternating between persuasion and coercion, and how group members at times subvert, at times reinforce, the hegemony of the cix.

Winslow, Andrew J. "The Myth Appeal: Studies in Cultural Narrative." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195177.

Full text
Abstract:
Though Aristotle is famous for defining three persuasive appeals in his treatise On Rhetoric, I argue that a fourth appeal exists in the pages of The Poetics. In addition to character (ethos), logic (logos), and emotion (pathos), the fourth appeal is to narrative (mythos), or the substantive body of values contained within the socio-cultural elements of a given culture. Using the works of Joseph Campbell, Kenneth Burke, and Roland Barthes as touchstones, the goal of this dissertation is to offer a systematic analysis of this appeal. Because human beings at once function with attention to the whole of lived experience, the myth appeal touches on social norms (the assumed reality), ideology (the lived and presumed reality), and hyperreality (where symbols become a reality unto themselves). The substance of the myth appeal is narrative, or undercurrents of stories used in the place of argument. Here, I offer four examples to display these tensions; the first is an "action-figure" toy line to illustrate how an existing mythology from comics conveys ideological values; the second is a post 09/11 comic book series which used hyperreality to critique social norms; the third is Alan Sokal's academic hoax , which showed a cultural tension across all three areas; and finally, a survey of U.S. Supreme Court decisions on privacy to discuss the emerging mythology of abortion. I conclude with a systematic approach to myth, and a brief discussion of additional persuasive appeals.

Fidouh, Dalel. "Communicative semiotics in everyday life : cultural criticism : the image in the 21st century." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/13679.

Abstract:
What am I seeing? What does it mean? This thesis addresses the transformations in cultural life in the 21st century due to the cultural dominance of the image, which resulted from the radical change and enormous progress in the media, communication and the development of information systems in the world. All this has led to changes in the intellectual structure, and an increased tendency to drift in all areas, and the emergence of a society and a culture governed by the culture of shock. The fundamental issue concerning the image is an epistemological issue, as we cannot distinguish between the visual image and the semantic product. We live in a world surrounded with stunning and spectacular visual images. We are overloaded with images from all types in our everyday life. We probably see images more than we read words. This thesis provides an analytical framework for understanding how images produce meanings using the semiotic approach. Semiotics is the most important approach that can be used to analyze all types of images. Semiotic analysis addresses images as signs which communicate meaning. The symbols used in signs are often culturally specific. This thesis indicates the focus of the receiver to adapt to this visual cultural situation, to be able to grasp the content of the new cultural discourse as it is present in all the details of the receiver’s daily life. There have been a number of questions that pushed me to accomplish this research, including: what are the elements of the culture of the image? What is its impact on the mental perception and production of semantic meaning? What is its reflection on the nature of social networking in general? The thesis discussed all of these issues.

Marner, Anders.

Abstract:
This dissertation is mainly concerned with the photography of Christer Strömholm. In studying his work semiotics is used as a method in analysing the rhetoric of his photographs and their relations to the photographic world, the artworld and the lifeworld. Especially the phenomenologically based visual and cultural semiotics of Göran Sonesson is adopted. The work of Strömholm is first understood in the context of surrealism; especially in the ”dark” surrealism of Georges Bataille´s. In relation to the I - here and nowposition of the lifeworld the surrealism of Bataille can be seen as a downwardgoing rhetoric on the Great Chain of Being, the hierarchy of the lifeworld, from stone, via object, plant and man, to society or God. Bataille´s highlighting of the material and animal nature of man is an opposition to the upwardgoing spiritualising rhetoric of André Breton´s. The main rhetorical device in Strömholm’s photography is a downwardgoing isolation of the object from the lifeworld, according to Jan-Gunnar Sjölin surrealism’s first maneuvre. However, Bataille´s rhetoric and Strömholm´s photography may also be seen as a modern variant of the ancient grotesque degradation that according to Michail Bakhtin once took place in popular carnivals and marketplaces. The degradation of Bakhtin, George Lakoff and Mark Turner’s notion of conceptual metaphor suggests a rhetoric of the lifeworld itself, which may allow us to understand pictorial rhetoric without the help of the theories of the artworld, such as surrealism’s theories. Strömholm´s work is studied in relation to Roman Jakobsons functions in the process of communication. The dominant function in the photographs is the metasemiotic, since pictures and other signs are depicted and commented on. Also the photographs of transsexuals depict and comment signs, men that are signs of women. His photographs of transsexuals has been interpreted as a social realistic documentary, but is better understood as a surrealist union of two terms as unlike as possible, femininity and masculinity. Another important function in his photographs is the interpersonal function suggesting a conjunction of emotive and conative functions. Along with isolation concealment of the object is used, which makes the object difficult to identify. We are not allowed to complete the act of perception, we see only the point of view. In Strömholm’s photography, the point of view of the invisible ”picture-self” with its unique perspective replaces the customary photographic referential image supposed to show “reality.” The notion of ”picture-self” suggests a differentiation between photographer and ”picture-self”, a ready-prepared position for a subject, that the photographer or viewer can place him/herself in. In being placed in this position an existential particualrization occurs, which is termed ”la condition humaine”. Walter Benjamin´s idea of ”the outmoded” and ”the ruins of the bourgeoisie”, Susan Sontag´s idea of the role of ugliness in modern photography, is seen in relation to Strömholms photography and the downwardgoing surrealist rhetoric. In Benjamin´s ”age of reproduction” there is in the photographic work of Strömholm, a tension between ”centripetality” and ”centrifugality”; of remaining in or departing from the artworld. His work is also discussed in relation to postvisualization as an opposition to the well known photographic notion of previsualization.   In order to explain different rhetorical maneuvres semiotically in relation to the spatial lifeworld, the notion of familiarization is used as an opposition to Victor Shklovskys well known notion of estrangement. In the model of “the Great Cross”, with its origo as the familiarity of the I-here-nowposition of the core of the lifeworld, a vertical axis is the Great Chain of Being, ending on both ends with what is considered strange. Also ending with what is strange is a horizontal axis with rhetorical relations on the same level. A similar cross is used to explain rhetorical temporal movements between past and present and present and future with the present I - here and nowsituation of the origo. A conclusion is that visual and cultural semiotics is an enlightening tool for practical analyses even of an œuvre that is as enigmatic as that of Strömholm´s.

Bellentani, Federico. "Connecting cultural geography and semiotics : an analysis of the multiple interpretations of monuments and memorials in Estonia." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/107248/.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to advance the understanding of the connections between cultural geography and semiotics on the basis of which to analyse the multiple interpretations of the built environment. To do so, this thesis focuses on the interpretations of a specific part of the built environment: monuments and memorials. Monuments and memorials are built forms with commemorative as well as political functions: national elites use monuments and memorials to articulate selective historical narratives, focusing attention on convenient events and individuals, while obliterating what is uncomfortable for them. Articulating historical narratives, monuments and memorials can set political agendas and reproduce social order. Human and cultural geographers have focused on the social and power relations embodied in monuments and memorials. However, they have paid little attention to the processes through which monuments and memorials can effectively convey meanings and reinforce political power. Semiotic analysis has concentrated on the signifying dimension of monuments and memorials, while underrating the role of the material and the political dimensions. This thesis argues that a holistic perspective based on the connection between cultural geography and semiotics can overcome the limitations of previous research on the interpretations of monuments and memorials. This holistic perspective conceives the interpretations of monuments and memorials as depending on three interplays: a) between the material, symbolic and political dimensions; b) between designers and users; and c) between monuments and memorials, the cultural context and the built environment. These ideas are explored through an examination of two monuments in Estonia: the Victory Column, a war memorial erected in Tallinn in 2009 and the so-called ‘Kissing Students’, a fountain with a sculpture featuring two kissing young people unveiled in Tartu in 1998.

Abstract:
Analisamos as apresentações: a- Skinnerbox (AHMED, 2005); b- Pixel (MERZOUKI, 2014); c- Slave to the Rhythm (BILLBOARD MUSIC AMERICAN AWARDS, 2014).
The dance is a bodily expression, artistic, political and social that has the body as media itself. By the time that the digital world is so present in communication studies, in culture, in everyday subjects, dance is also crossed by this phenomenon. Through multimedia digital devices, dance acquires other conceptions of body, movement and space returning to art through technological representations. This doctoral thesis has as its theme the study of dance culture and translations on the digital language, the theoretical perspective of cultural semiotics. The qualities of translation processes were investigated that occur in the interrelationship of systems and configure the features of digital culture in contemporary dance. The overall objective of the research was to understand the ways in which contemporary dance performs translation processes the digital language, the interrelation between systems, languages and texts. In this perspective, the research problem is thus proposed: How dance performances in the contemporary operating translations digital language, especially considering the interrelationship of systems, the creation of texts (shows) and updating the dance itself? The introduction presents the theme, the objectives, the questioning and justification; after, following three constituent chapters of the theoretical framework, one of the semiotics of culture, from the perspective of Lotman (1979), which will pervade the whole thesis, another about the dance semiosphere highlighting the fundamentals of Laban (RENGEL, 2003) and the fourth chapter on digital culture, to the concepts of Manovich (2001); the fifth chapter deals with the methodological procedures, the corpus selection criteria and analysis of performances. The methodology describes the construction of a semiotic analysis of selected dance performances in videos on www.youtube.com platform. We have analyzed the presentations: a- Skinnerbox (Ahmed, 2005); b- Pixel (Merzouki, 2014); c- Slave to the Rhythm (BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS AMERICAN, 2014). During the research it was found that the senses generated from the digital culture in dance produce a naturalization electronic body, the interaction practices with images, appliances, prosthetics and the use of software as scenographic resources for creating dance performances. It was concluded that the ways we relate to the world through the art of contemporary dance are crossed by the logic of digital culture; this intersection information reconfigures the dance culture of the system by changing modes of production, the doings, knowledge and thinking dance. So semiosis between systems is contamination and dance borders become porous to transdisciplinarity, covering a range of new techniques, body technologies, movement and stimulating a new understanding of the complex reality of the dimensions that make up the world.

Abstract:
Semiotics and the concept of signs can be used to analyse the signs that can be found in a Swedish primary school in order to understand and expand our understanding of the role of signifiers, including cultural ones, in child education. The study identifies what signs can be found, what purpose they have and what category of sign they belong to, whether they are signs as defined by Saussure, how they might be categorized within Peirce‘s triadic typology and, applying Barthes’ notion of cultural signification, the extent to which they contribute to maintaining and promoting a school’s identity and values. In order to analyse the signs, a Swedish public primary school located in Halmstad was visited and the visible signs were photographed and catalogued. In order to confirm the intentions behind the design and meaning of signs, an interview with a senior teacher was arranged. The result, and signs, that were documented and described; these included drawings, emergency escape signs, posters, diplomas and other instructions with picture or sign language representations. The signs were categorized and analysed using semiotic theories of signs suggested by Saussure, Peirce and Barthes. The study facilitates a clearer understanding of the range of functions of signs in schools, both for practical purposes and as signifiers of culture and identity, and also highlights the possible applications and limitations of using semiotic theories in investigating generated meanings in physical locations.

Abstract:
With a statistical rise in visible, audible and cultural minorities in Canada, the importance of recognizing the relationship between immigrants, culture and identity as constructed in collective discourse becomes paramount. Through hermeneutic and sociocritical paradigms, this research applies a constructionist approach to qualitatively analyze representations of cultural identities in Canadian and Quebec films projecting intergenerational conflicts within immigrant families. From these analyses, five tendencies were elicited: guilt, displacement, in-betweenness, reflections on Canadian society, and heterogeneous perspectives. While deconstructing cultural identity portrayals remains crucial, it is equally important to study these systems of meaning within production. The research is extended through the appendaged short film,Tracing Shadows, a glimpse into the voices of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. Both textual analyses and the filmic creation demonstrate the symbiotic connection between society and culture, nurtured within collective identity narratives’ depictions of time and space.

This study is a research about the appropriation of manga culture through strategic design. It set out to understand the strategic design, metadesign and manga culture, as well as the pontencial of methodology of strategic design. For the development of contextual research was chosen as a bottom line, an organization that had in its structure a design department and a product whose inspiration for its creation was the manga. Therefore, elected Maurício de Sousa Productions (MSP), the magazine Young Monica's Gang (YMG) and its products for analysis. After this analysis we sought to understand through in-depth interviews, as the manga reader with the manga culture and appropriated it, as investigated through focus groups as the nikkei, and Japanese descendants living in Brazil, incorporated Brazilian culture. In the context of design research has developed a design studio, in which techniques and tools utilized as the sensitization, the mood board, and the scenarios to developing concept for a project of strategic design. By combining contextual and projectual design research, had the purpose is to strengthen the relationship Product-Service-System (PSS), and explore manga culture values beyond its visuality, such as collectivization, respect and others.

The central purpose of this work is situate rural maracatu among the cultural events in the state of Pernambuco, as a semiotic show. For this purpose, we use theory and methodology of French or greimasian semiotics. We assume that the rural maracatu is being constituted from various ethnic, social, religious and cultural influences. We also aim to point out what the main actors, themes and figures taking part in this magnificent popular festivity of the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco state; and we analyze the rural maracatu choreographic acquis from the roles each character plays in the dance. Taking into account the relevance of chosen maracatus and the visual quality of DVDs, we selected four presentations: Maracatu Estrela de Ouro de Aliança and Leão Misterioso , that occurred during the Annual Meeting of Rural Maracatus in Nazaré da Mata-PE, in 2009; and presentations of maracatus Coração Nazareno and Cambinda Brasileira, which took place during the Annual Meeting of Rural Maracatus, in 2011. From the analysis of generative course of meaning of the poetic compositions of the maracatu masters, we realized that, due to the inherent improvisation to performances in public square the subject of enunciation, which often plays a role of an enunciator-actor, is emerging in many narrative actants, themes and figures related to issues of interest to the communities in which they operate and that arise from the interaction with the audience. In presentations we reviewed, for example, topics were discussed related to football, politics, the environment, education, public safety, feminine statement, the Christian religion etc. In rural maracatu, we find characters such as Mateus, Catirina and burrinha, which can be seen in the cavalo-marinho and the bumba meu boi. In turn, king, queen, maid of palace, ambassadors, princes, princesses and even baianas come from maracatu nação. Virtually every rural maracatu master is or has been master of bumba meu boi or master-cirandeiro which proves, once again, the maracatu's relationship with other popular festivities. They were present in the maracatu loose thud, hieratic and totemic elements related to Catholicism, Candomblé and Catimbó. In addition, the orchestra and the terno that dictate the pulsating rhythm of maracatu usually perform frevo, coco, sieves or samba de matuto during the dance, which do not have a rigidity regarding the choreographic script. Finally, we argue that rural maracatu is a true amalgam of popular culture of Pernambuco.

This research begins with the following questions: which language and cultural features shapes cultural webjournalism and to what extent the later is different from the classical model of cultural journalism in the mass media? To answer these questions, we tried initially to characterize the episthemological realm of the cultural journalism, from a historical perspective which would deal with his language evolution and cultural approaching. Press journalism is taken as a comparative reference because it created the classical model of cultural journalism built by the twentieth century mass media and so it has been a beacon for most of the internet journalistic experiences. The social apropriation of the internet has meaned a new communcational logic, based on contribution, participation and sharing of socially produced informations. The hipermidiatic communication logic is heightened by the media language resources, like multimidiality, hypertextuality, interactivity and memory. On the other hand, the mass logic is characterized by the transmission of information from the basis of centralized social mediations. This transmissive logic has been analysed with mass communication theories and models, and later it has been contrasted, through the peircean semiotics model, with the associative logic of the hypermidiatic communication. Determination and representation semiotic operations, which complete themselves in the semiotic or mediation operation, were related, respectively, to the transmissive logic and to the communicational associative logic. Semiotics suppose continuous improvement of signical processes. On the same way, journalistic semiotics seems to point out to a broadening of its communicational logic, as demonstrated by the new ways of internet cultural information. To investigate the formats through which cultural information circulate on the internet, it has been created a virtual community to discuss, between 2002 and 2004, this issue. Simultaneously, an FCA/PUCMinas and UNI-BH research staff discussed and referenced, in a website, some paradigms of circulation of cultural information on internet. Then, the referenced websites were analysed with the peircean semiotics model focus, and it was measured to what extent they get closer or move away from the cultural journalism classical model. The results has shown that hybridism reigns on the net and that this fact perhaps require the broadening of the cultural journalism concept with the aim of embracing the specificities of hypermidiatic communication associative logic

What this thesis' empirical findings reveal in the context of mathematically supported model-building in the realm of social science is explored; that social scientists and business practitioners model-building is blindsided to the socially constructed nature of mathematics (Berger & Luckmann, 1966; Jorion, 2009) is pondered; how post-Newtonian theoretical physics builds new theory by building new math is evoked; mathematically sound alternatives to Peano arithmetic and Euclidean geometry that have not been explicitly dismissed or considered by social scientists is exposed; independent and superficially paradoxical attempts to theorize organizations with various bodies ofmathematics are reconciled --notably (Bitbol, 2009; Donaldson, 2010); and development principles towards a phenomenologicallygrounded mathematics corpus are yielded. Next, how a social network perspective applied conjointly at the semantic and cultural levels of analysis may usefully extend and bring insights to standard qualitative content analysis is put forward. To illustrate the practical implications of this thesis, one fertile ground is focused upon and a loss-less method to merge indwelled information systems is posited. Empirically illustrating the Aristotelian breakdown of language into its component parts (and the special role numbers, space, and time play in Western discourse and language), a methodology is described for nonloss post-merger integration of organizational knowledge that builds both on (Codd, 1970, 1972, 1974; Date et al., 2003; Fagin, 1977, 1979, 1981) database normalization from the field of Information Management in Computer Science, and on (Nonaka, 1994)'s SECI dynamic model of knowledge creation fromthe field of Knowledge Management in Business Administration Studies. This methodology, coined Archnormalization by the author, introduces the sociologically-grounded concept of Attribute-free Entities. Finally, further avenues of research are outlined that ultimately lie beyond the scope of this thesis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Oil is central to our lives and is the source of many of the conveniences that we take for granted. It can bring wealth and prosperity to individuals and to nations, but is also a source of political conflict and the consequences of its impact on the environment are only now beginning to be fully recognised. The oil companies have been leaders in the development of marketing and branding and this thesis traces the history of the oil industry and analyses the different forms of print advertisements that its major companies have produced over a period of some hundred years, from the industry’s infancy until 2012. It takes a cultural semiotic perspective to investigate and reveal the ways in which the companies have adapted their advertising messages to the prevailing socio-political conditions to reflect current attitudes and to guide both public opinion and national policy. The analyses demonstrate how the companies have responded to different crises and to increasing globalisation and how they have engineered a shift from product to presence and from oil to energy to communicate a more environment-friendly image. A close reading of the advertisements produced by the companies shows how they have cast themselves in the mythical role of the indefatigable hero whose mission is the common good. Moreover, it uncovers the different heroic personalities that they have acquired and adopted over time to differentiate their products and services.

Umoh, Idara Enobong. "A linguistic and cultural analysis of localisation practices on oil and gas company websites." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/1376.

Full text
Abstract:
Oil and Gas companies have the inevitable need to operate in a global environment and therefore have a global reach. This thesis seeks to understand the nature and degree of localisation of the websites in this industry. This thesis introduces two notions of ‘global’, and seeks to examine the relationship between them: the first of which is the Global reach or operations of companies and the second is where a company’s communication is localised in language and cultural terms. A company can be seen to be ‘global’ in one of these two notions and it is this relationship that this thesis seeks to explore. The contribution of this thesis firstly, is that it adds to previous studies of website localisation, which have focused primarily on consumer goods and the retail industry, by examining a different kind of industry. Secondly, it takes into account the important semiotic and symbolic dimensions of language and culture when looking at localisation practices. The thesis thus contributes to the growing literature on website localisation and practices in Multinational companies. This study was carried out on 387 corporate and country specific websites of 16 Oil and Gas Companies to understand the extent and nature of their localisation practises particularly the way that language and culture are presented. The websites were studied using a qualitative and quantitative research design which involved carrying out a linguistic/semiotic analysis and a cultural analysis to give a balanced perspective of localisation practices. The conclusions of the study were that the companies operated a ‘glocal’ strategy, a combination of both a localised and a globalised (standardised) strategy. The companies had a combination of globally standardised features such as the website layouts, images, colour schemes, logos and the use of global celebrities on their websites and a limited degree of localisation where the ‘local’ is signified by local country websites, local news stories, local languages, local celebrities, images of local sights, images of company’s local office buildings and local petrol stations.

Abstract:

Because of the mass tourism industry that exploits sensitive locations all over our planet a new kind of tourism came into focus in the 1980’s. This new form of tourism was named ecotourism, and as the name reveals ecotourism deals with low-impact travel. Today, all sorts of places can be gazed upon in a flick of a switch; all you need is a television set. It is well known that destination marketing successfully uses visual media as a tool to sell trips to potential tourists. Therefore, this essay examines how ecotourism benefits from the great power of the television. The analyzed material contains of six different TV shows, sorted into two groups – travel shows and discussion programs. With the theory of the tourist gaze, semiotics, destination marketing and the experience economy the study resulted in the conclusion that all TV shows are built upon collective cultural representations found in the exotic and the authentic. With the help of the visual language, travel shows can give new meaning to a specific destination expressed in a system of mutual understanding and shared culture.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is dance as archive material. Illustrations, dance notation, reviews, photographs, moving imagery and motion capture are studied as different types of records which preserve dance. The purpose is to find out what has happened between dance and dance record. What kind of representation of dance are the records? The study also connects to a user perspective and poses another question: what do scholars who study movement which has happened get out of these types of records? In what way can dance scholars use these record types? The theoretical stance is semiotics and I use Ferdinand de Saussures concepts ‘signifiant’ and ‘signifié’ to orientate myself in the difference between dance which has happened and the records, which tell us something about this dance. Charles Sanders Peirce concepts ‘symbolic,’ ‘iconic’ and ‘indexical’ are used to describe the relationship between dance and record. The method is qualitative interviews. I have interviewed four dance scholars and the recorded interviews are the source material. The scholars have knowledge of what types of representatives of dance the records are, since they study dance which has happened through records. The interviews also answer the question related to the scholar’s perspective: what do dance scholars get out of the records when they study dance which has happened? Scholars who study dance which has happened often prefer moving imagery as a source. They do so because the moving image has an iconic relationship to the dance (a relationship built on likeness) and because it, like dance, is moving. There is no record which could give an absolute transferral of a movement which has happened, all types of records have their prerequisites. Nor is there a record type which is ‘better’ than another, which record is prefered depends on the scholar’s purpose of their study. The different record types complement each other and many scholars prefer to use several different types. Hence, this study recommends dance archives to aim for plurality of record types in their collections.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study explored how the use of Emojis – beyond being used just as playful joke markers and tone-setters – shape culture and identity within a community of practice. Through the means of two qualitative Focus Group interviews involving ten members from a local soccer team, the purpose was to examine in-depth participants’ motivations for using Emojis, and their feelings about the Emojis that they receive both within and outside their community. Results showed that Emojis – irrespective of shape – are understood as signs representing an individual’s inner positive energy and good will; when such signs are used regularly within a community, this contributes to that the community culture emerge as positive and friendly. Expanding on these findings, results also illustrated that Emojis are perceived as symbols of likeness towards the group and that they contribute to the shaping of open and permissive culture in which emotions are allowed to flow freely – an effect which seem to be transferred to their offline environment too. Drawing from theories of Cultural Psychology and Cultural Semiotics, the thesis presents an innovative view of Emojis as both products as well as producers of culture; products because they are graphic representations of emotions which become meaningful cultural signs when posted online, and producers because they affect members’ perception of reality within the community of practice. The thesis also conclude that the use of Emojis is closely linked to personality and identity; as identities are continuously shaped through the symbolic association of Emojis, this affect not only how members of a community perceive the individuals using them, but also how we perceive the community in which these identities circulate and operate. This finding paved the way for interesting future studies on personal identity building through Emoji use.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the Slow Food movement which started in Italy in the late80’s and today is an internationally spread organization with around 100 000 participants in 160 countries. The core aim within the Slow Food movement is combining everyone’s “right to pleasure” with social responsibility, summed up in their motto: “Good, Clean and Fair”. The movement is interesting from a global development perspective, since it looks at food in relation to the cultural, physical, social, environmental and political aspects of our lives, and relates to sustainability in a wide sense. In 2003, UNESCO started acknowledging so called ”Intangible cultural heritage” as a part of the common heritage of humanity, and a few years later some culinary traditions were inserted to the list. Departing from a social constructivist approach in how knowledge is constructed, combined with Pieterse’s ideas of the relation between culture and power, the key research question for the thesis is: How is the concept of Food as cultural heritage being expressed within the external communication channels of the Slow Food movement? Followed by the sub-question: How do these expressions relate to power dynamicsand to socially constructed assumptions of reality? Through a semiotic analysis, visual and textual material from Slow Food’s official websites have been analysed, using the UNESCO definition of Intangible cultural heritage as an analytical tool. The findings are that many fundamental ideas within the UNESCO definition are expressed in Slow Food’s external communication, but at the same time, that some aspects could be more highlighted in order to put a higher emphasis on the producer and the community. It is evident that Slow Food need to continuously address the critique directed towards them regarding issues of privilege and elitism, and keep a self-reflexive approach in their communication work.

Abstract:
This study is a descriptive research project which examines a purposeful census of the best selling children's books for 0-8 year olds in the United States in 2003. This cross-sectional study of these social artifacts evaluates the extent to which the ideologies of the environmental movement have been inculcated into culture. It evaluates how the environment is represented in children’s literature and the extent to which children's literature meets the goals of environmental education. Through narrative semeiotic analysis of the themes, as well as the manifest (text) and latent (pictures) content, varying degrees of pro and antienvironmental ideologies reflected by these representations emerged. Analytic induction revealed that these representations reflected ideologies of human domination over nature. In addition, in most cases, the representation of the environment did not reflect or meet the goals of environmental education. This finding sheds light on the role children's books play in the environmental socialization of America's youth.

This research paper aims at recognizing the terminology known as political-administrative, with the purpose of suggesting a glossary of federal management culture. This field is understood as a special subject focused on the formulation, implementation and evaluation of cultural public policies in which the Ministry of Culture is in charge of. It is also considered a political area, marked by ideological and social representations resulting from the multifaceted nature of culture. Although it is a complex and important field, its terminology has not been listed yet. In order to accomplish the goal which was mentioned previously, we propose an operational scheme based on theoretical and methodological principles of Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT), developed by Maria Teresa Cabré (1998-2005); linguistic-textual Terminography, proposed by Krieger and Finatto (2004) and Semiotics of French Line. We have adopted the principle that terms acquire terminological value due to their insertion in specialized texts, which are seen as natural environments of terminology. Through semiotic analysis of the Ministry of Culture program documents, it was possible to deduce not only themes, but ways of organization in the area, which have been used as guiding lines to establish terminological categories. The results of the semiotic analysis have become an important operational resource for the recognition of political and administrative terminology of culture. As a result, we present the repertoire of terms distributed in terminological categories which correspond to the three dimensions of the area: a) political-conceptual dimension, referring to concepts and principles that underlie cultural public policies; b) administrative dimension, which concerns the institutional structure and management mechanisms and c) normativ e dimension, which includes the legal provisions for financing culture. At the end of the paper, we describe theoretical and methodological guidelines of a proposed glossary of federal management culture.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at how a contemporary notion of successful girlhood is negotiated in the social text of Seventeen magazine. Moreover, it demonstrates the ways in which Seventeen’s representations of successful and ideal girls reflect and mediate timely values of postfeminism and neoliberalism. This thesis will also make visible how race, class, ability, and sexuality are negotiated within Seventeen’s “success” framework, in order to illuminate intersectional issues implicit in conceptualizing ideal girlhood. The method for this research is a semiotic discourse analysis, looking at the visual and linguistic signs within the text in order to connect them with broader ideologies and themes surrounding contemporary ideal girlhood. Drawing on girls’ studies and feminist cultural studies literature, the discourse of ideal girlhood is situated in a so-called “postfeminist” moment, in which girls, as popular, highly visible subjects in contemporary society, are perceived to be poised for achievement and social ascension, all while being closely surveilled. These expectations of postfeminism intersect with current neoliberal principles of individualized success; analysis is therefore connected with and contextualized by discussion of late modern principles of neoliberalism and its economic, social, and political logic.

In this work, comics are understood as a language that, through the juxtaposition of images, transmit information that produces an answer in the reader. The proposal is to observe the possibilities of appropriation of knowledge and cultural information present in an artifact that shows itself broad in the sense of interpretation and meaning: comic books. The adopted research methodology comprises an interpretative and qualitative approach that involves both verbal and visual text. In the empirical object of this research, The Sandman, of Neil Gaiman, diverse cultural, historical and literary references in the narrative content were perceived. In this way, the cultural appropriations, aesthetic, cinematographic, among others, that are part of the composition of the series, were considerate, observing its intertextual and semiotic aspects. Thus, when we look at the analysis of intertextuality in Sandman, we try to understand how cultural information is articulated in the constitution of a specific field of knowledge, bringing together the most diverse references. This case study aimed to contribute to the Information Science through a reflection on how the mediations of reading are constituted through the identification of the intertextual layers present in the work, the social processes of knowledge construction and the assembly of \"encyclopedias\" Of readers in today\'s information society.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis presents an analysis of ‘township typography’ as a complex visual dialect generated by various economic and historical factors within the South African social landscape. A combination of specific tools, skills-sets and applications has produced a body of typographic letterforms that can be visually distinguished from standardised letterforms found in mainstream typography. Due to the origin of these letterforms, as well as their distinct appearance, ‘township typography’ has the capacity to evoke specific social, cultural or demographic structures in systems of communication. This study reveals that typographic features from ‘township typography’ are drawn into mainstream cultural production, particularly in the field of local advertising, as the result of a complex process of incorporation and institutional consecration.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the 1950’s, rock importantly diversified itself. It became a complex and heterogeneous cultural object. It is now hard to typify the genre as a strictly American or English production. Local and national scenes are effectively developping. Some of them even know international success and bring me to point two facts : 1) English language and culture are no longer the exclusive cultural references of rock production. New national identities now integrate it. 2) Nonetheless, rock aesthetic is still highly recognizable. The aim of this study is to analyse the articulation between rock aesthetic and national culture in the iconography of Finnish and German bands. I adopt a socio-semiotic methodology for analysis. This articulation is remarkable in imagery but also in music. It find its origins in a global social and cultural context, and also in the mutations of the musical industry. After this work, we can produce the following conclusions : 1) Firstly we can conclude that the evolutions of cultural industries and globalised culture toward multiculturalism favoured the developpment and the visibility of national rock scenes. Structuration of the musical economy played also an importantpart. Moroever, the phenomenon is not new. Effectively, the British rock scene is an early example of it since the 1960’s. 2) Then, the evolution and the diversification of rock aesthetic as a result of acculturation create good conditions for the emergence of new identities in rock music. We notice the use of different strategies to express the national in music, such as specialisation into a genre, musical innovation or inscription of music in the local cultural environment

Stettler, René. "The politics of post-industrial cultural knowledge work." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/481.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation conducts in-depth inquiries into the practices, nature and theory of post-industrial cultural work and the humanities- and arts-based civic dialogues which cultural work promotes. Given the broad neglect of utopian thinking in the mainstream of critical social science and in an attempt to sketch out a vision of an alternative future, the aim of this thesis is to outline an “epistemology” for post-industrial cultural work as well as to reflect upon the outlook for educational cultural work practices and their function as a catalyst for civic dialogue and cultural change. The main concerns are the signification, interests and aims embodied in cultural production touching on issues of cultural and scientific learning, alternative modes of democratic governance of science and technology (Felt, Wynne et al. 2007), industrial society’s logic of accumulation and market rationality, the primacy of contemporary instrumental and capitalist values, neoliberalism, globalization and cosmopolitanism. With a view to addressing elementary questions regarding the future of cultural work, which are explored and theorised alongside future perspectives of a new form of knowledge work for the humanities and the arts, the actual challenges of cultural work are considered from within the wider context of the risk society (Beck 1986) and the threats which affect everybody today. In relying on Beck’s (2009) conceptualization of the world risk society as a “non-knowledge society” characterised by the global existence of incalculable risks/threats and non-knowing, the thesis addresses the problem of non-knowledge and unrecognised contingencies as a challenge for cultural work to design processes of (un)learning in civic dialogues. In exploring the social, cultural and political relevance of three empirical case studies, the thesis ventures into the prospects of a new socio-epistemological perspective for cultural work and workspaces for knowledge. The studies investigate three different (techno-)socio-cultural spaces of knowledge: a public exhibition about the new Gotthard Base Tunnel currently under construction in the Swiss Alps, Jennifer Baichwal’s film Manufactured Landscapes (2006) about the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky and China’s industrial revolution, and the living intervention Fairytale at Documenta 12, 2007, which brought 1,001 Chinese citizens to Kassel, Germany. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is employed as a tool for the analysis of the material-semiotic properties of differing knowledges, the heterogeneous relations of socio-economic networks, and the global and uncertain conditions of the post-industrial world in which cultural work is embedded. What is colloquially referred to as post-industrial cultural knowledge work in this thesis is elaborated in the context of a propositional socio-epistemological second-order framework (Von Foerster 1984; Pakman 2003) for cultural work and its entanglements with ethics, aesthetics, pragmatics, politics—and biopolitical production (Hardt and Negri 2000; 2009). In order to build “third spaces” of knowledge (Turnbull 2000) and to nurture uncertainty-oriented approaches and contingencies, the findings propose the development of more open, (self-)reflexive and anticipating forms of thinking and acting in cultural production fields with the aim to catalyse societal developments, to foster intrinsic values and to create cultural workplace identities with a moral-ecological-political awareness (cf. Banks 2006; 2007) invoking new interactions between viewers, audiences and the environment.

Carberry, Helen. "Semiotic analysis of clinical chemistry: for " knowledge work " in the medical sciences." Queensland University of Technology, 2003. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15809/.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In this thesis a socio-cultural perspective of medical science education is adopted to argue the position that undergraduate medical scientists must be enculturated into the profession as knowledge workers and symbolic analysts who can interact with computers in complex analytical procedures, quality assurance and quality management. The cue for this position is taken from the transformations taking place in the pathology industry due to advances in automation, robotics and informatics. The rise of Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine (EBLM) is also noted and the observation by higher education researchers, that knowledge systems are transforming in such a way that disciplines can no longer act in isolation. They must now collaborate with disparate fields in transdisciplinary knowledge systems such as EBLM, for which new skills must be cultivated in undergraduate medical scientists. This thesis aims to describe a theoretical basis for knowledge work by taking a semiotic perspective. This is because, semiotics, a theory of signs and representations, can be applied to the structure of transdisciplinary scientific knowledge, the logic of scientific practice and the rhetoric of scientific communications. For this purpose, a semiotic framework is first derived from a wide range of semiotic theories existent in the literature. Then the application of this semiotic framework to clinical chemistry knowledge, context, logic, and rhetoric is demonstrated. This is achieved by interpreting various clinical chemistry data sources, for example, course materials, laboratory spatial arrangements, instruments, printouts, and students' practical reports, collected from a teaching laboratory situation. The results of semiotic analysis indicate that the clinical chemist working in the computerised laboratory environment performs knowledge work, and the term is synonymous with symbolic analysis. It is shown that knowledge work entails the application of a systematic structure for clinical chemistry knowledge derived in terms of the validation procedures applied to laboratory, data, results and tests; the application of logic in the classification and selection of instruments, their rulegoverned- use, and in troubleshooting errors; pragmatic decisions based on availability of space, services and budgets; discrimination among values in laboratory test evaluations in EBLM, for the cost-effectiveness and relevance of pathology services; and the recognition of rhetorical strategies used to communicate laboratory test information in graphs, charts, and statistics. The role of the laboratory context is also explained through semiotics, in terms of its spatial arrangements and designs of laboratory instruments, as a place that constrains the knowledge work experience. This contextual analysis provides insights into the oppositional trend brought to wide attention by analysts of computerised professional work, that more skills are needed, but that there are fewer highly skilled positions available. The curriculum implications of these findings are considered in terms of the need to cultivate knowledge workers for highly complex symbolic analysis in computerised laboratories; and also the need to prepare medical science graduates for the transdisciplinary knowledge system of EBLM, and related venues of employment such as biomedical research and clinical medicine. In meeting the aims to define and demonstrate knowledge work from the semiotic perspective, this thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge by the application of semiotics to a field in which it has probably never been tested. It contributes to the scholarship of teaching in higher education by formulating a structure for transdisciplinary medical science knowledge, which integrates scientific with other forms of knowledge, and with real world practice.

Abstract:
Educational textbooks have the power to influence pupils’ perception of the world. In the subject of English, this specifically concerns learning about cultures in different parts of the world where English is used. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of cultural representation in two English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks with the aim to make the hidden curriculum visible and to raise awareness among publishing houses and teachers. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Fairclough’s (2001) three-dimensional model in combination with Barthes’ (1977) Visual Semiotics methodology, we investigated which regions and countries were presented and how their cultures were constructed through texts and images. These findings were further compared to the cultural values and content of the Swedish curriculum, the genre of textbooks, and existing hegemonic discourses in society. In the analysis, Kachru’s (1986) Circles of World Englishes, Machin and Mayr’s (2012) toolkit for CDA, McKay’s (2010) interpretation of Anderson’s (1983) imagined communities, and Said’s (2003) concept of Orientalism were applied. Our findings show that the inner circle dominates and is depicted as superior in contrast to the outer and expanding circles. Although the textbooks include a variation of different cultures which is in line with the curriculum, representation of the outer and expanding circles is often stereotypical and underdeveloped which reinforces hegemonic discourses instead of acting to restructure them. This corresponds to previous studies in the genre, and hence, educators must work to ensure that the hidden curriculum in ELT textbooks is continuously made visible and challenged.

Abstract:
Digital technology has changed the nature of how humans live as a society with lives orbiting a digital core of internet, smartphones, social media etc. There is now not only a physical world but a digital one too. This far-reaching transformation also applies to cultural institutions to digitize their activities, a result of responding to the expectations of a contemporary audience. The aim of this study is to examine the digitization of art- and cultural heritage in a digital world. The essay examines the digital activities of the Swedish National Museum of fine art that has developed before, during and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is done through visual analysis and the theoretic framework of postphenomenology and social semiotics. The study finds that cultural heritage can be digitized in many different ways but that the digitization can’t replace the physical encounter with an artwork. Yet it can constitute new ways and perspectives on how to experience, see and discuss traditional works of art. Digitization of cultural heritage can therefore work to enhance its general interest, disseminate and influence an increase in availability of knowledge about cultural heritage and art history.

This paper aims the studying of the ownership of mediation technological devices by the Guarani Indians and of the Terena at Dourados Indigenous Reservation ( Mato Grosso do Sul BR) and similar experiences among the Ayoreo people, inhabitant of the Paraguayan Chaco. The question that motivates the thesis is whether it is possible to seize the occasions and how the culture transits between cultural traditions/original fragments and the new elements from indigenous contact with the contemporary world-post-industrial-informational. Using as methodological base the documentation of those devices , especially comparing approaches and differences during daily situations observed in the surveyed subjects, the analysis of transit is based in the following cases: 1) the technological means have streamlined their roles by the generation of contents of hybrid dimension and are privileged instruments of mediation, appropriation and re-evaluation of signs, in addition to adjustments for the incorporation and production of meaning on different and unrelated repertoires; 2) cultural identity is transformed by the results of polyphonies and polysemies that are part of various connections that the subjects are subjected to, composed by assimilations, influences, contagion and contaminations under constant construction. The theoretical basis of semiosphere concept formulated by Yury Lótman, which contemplates the idea of frontieres between semiotic spaces, fundamental concept to the understanding the production of communicative environments; the nature of the image as communicative sign and the construction of visibilities from the technical sector, total or partially, concepts proposed by Norval Baitello Junior and Lucretia Ferrara, in addition to the concepts of hybridism of Nestor g. Canclini and mediation of Jesús Martín-Barbero

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine how visual communication can be interpreted in different ways and even in opposition to the creator’s intention, and to understand how different visual signs in images convey meaning to explain audience’s oppositional reading. Through a qualitative methodological approach, a semiotic comparative analysis of two covers of the fashion magazine Vogue featuring Kamala Harris will be carried out, a digital cover and a print cover. Theoretically, the analysis is grounded in postcolonialism, representation, and Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding model of communication. The results suggest that there are signs in the photograph on Vogue’s print cover that can be interpreted from a postcolonial perspective, and both oppositional and preferred readings are discussed.

Abstract:
This research proposes a semiotic and rhetoric discourse analysis of the poster and the display, about the prevention of AIDS through sexual transmission. In the wake of the School of Paris and the Groupe μ, our research is divided into three parts, respectively: the semiotics of the poster, the rhetoric of the poster and the semiotics of the display, in order to have a complete and extensive study of the visual and communicative discourse. Based on the hypotheses about the influence of the socio-cultural context of the poster and the display, the semiotic and rhetoric analysis through a multicultural corpus illustrates that the socio-cultural codes concern with all aspects of the poster and the display in our research

Abstract:
This qualitative study intends to examine how western companies have constructed their branding communication in conjunction with the Black Lives Matter movement. From a theoretical framework based on semiotics, visual rhetoric and postcolonialism reviews the studies rhetorical strategies in commercials to read out the myths the companies communicate. By responding to societal changes can companies create positive associations to themselves, which is based on the cultural context the communication operates within. Brands have the opportunity to preserve, transform and challenge the current power structures through the advertising impact they have on the receiver. The study illustrates the issue concerning how companies communicate values and messages from a different culture. By comparing Gillette’s praised, respectively Pepsi’s criticized commercial, makes it possible to understand how the recipient's reaction can be understood in relation to Black Lives Matter from a postcolonial perspective.    The units are examined through a combined semiotic and critical visual analysis method with related tools. The study shows how Pepsi´s myth does not fall naturally within the cultural context, where it has a diminishing effect on the Black Lives Matter movement. The brand is placed in the center, as the product becomes a symbol of the myth and clear power relations can be read. Gillette's rhetorical strategies instead associate with the cultural codes that the movement conveys, where the brand is taken out of focus and the commercial communicates equal conditions.

Abstract:
How will an exhibition catalog or a fictional story, enhanced for digital tablets, translate the visitor’s reading habits and expectations into pages-screens? How do the e-books’ designers understand and conceive these reading practices? How will concrete readers’ expectations meet the implicit reader of the text? This thesis is based on a social semiotic methodology, deeply intertwining the empirical study of the current e-books creative and consumption practices with a methodical analysis of the semiotic and rhetorical strategies of their editorial interfaces. Empirically merging semiotic, sociological and economical research, we bring to light a new original vocabulary of “reading features” of enhanced e-books. Combining it with the designers’ practices, this vocabulary exhibits the role played by usages and social standards in semiosis. It is also enriched with a reception study on a specific artifact

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to study culture bound translation phenomena in translations from Finland-Swedish to German. The data consists of Tove Jansson’s Sommarboken and Bildhuggarens Dotter and Kjell Westö’s collection of short stories Lugna Favoriter and the German translations of these books. The general aim of the analysis is to identify the strategies used by the translators to translate different cultural phenomena. Moreover, the consequences of the strategies are dealt with on a pragmatic level. In addition, the aim is to study whether it is easier to translate a Finland-Swedish book into Finnish than into German from the cultural point of view. Semiotics, the science of signs, relations and meanings of signs is an important tool in this doctoral thesis. Translation can be understood not only as a translation of a written text A into a written text B but also in a wider meaning. In addition, the cover of a book and different cultural phenomena can be translated. This point of view is visible, for example, in the semiotic analysis of four bookcovers. The analysis shows that the translators use nine different adaptation strategies. There are also six types of non-adaptation. The adaptations used by the translator, the context and the semiotic space of the reader of the target culture are the factors which have an influence on the level of understanding the target text. It also becomes evident that the more different the target culture is from the source culture, the harder it is to translate from the cultural point of view

Abstract:
This dissertation is a theoretical study on the relationship between the languages of the press and the digital medium. The hypothesis that the daily suffers modeling from cultural texts coming from the Internet drives the entire script investigations. The sense of modelizations structures, as well as other concepts that are anchored in research comes from semiotics theory of culture or russian semiotics, born in the School of Tartu, Estonia. With this contribution we hope to understand how culture remakes languages and recode the system of press operating semioses and creating new texts in this area. The research adopts the main conceptual terms set forged in the reflections of the group of russian intellectuals, but extends their analyzes from other postulates and contributions, such as dialogism, discourse and concepts pertaining to the field of journalism and new media. Drawing on quantitative resources from a sample of six brazilian newspapers of national expression this study investigates the possibilities of modeling, especially in the exercise of the role of the hyperlink as a sign. With this determination of the digital language int the press, the study examines the expansion of the field of signification that the Internet brings about cultural systems of our time, establishing themselves as part of a mind of culture working from a diagram thought. Such views do not contain the analysis of the results obtained, but expands the vision for new problems.
