Smith, Darrell Jon. "A values-based wood-fuel landscape evaluation : building a fuzzy logic framework to integrate socio-cultural, ecological, and economic value." Thesis, University of Cumbria, 2014. http://insight.cumbria.ac.uk/id/eprint/3191/.

Full text
Abstract:
In meeting the UK Government's national and international renewable energies commitments and their role in UK energy security, decarbonisation of energy use, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation, the recognition of a potential for considerable scaling up of UK woodland coverage is emphasised. Also, UK forestry has increasingly become realigned with the global sustainability agenda encompassing issues such as native woodlands, the decline of woodland biodiversity, the Government’s quality of life indicators, and ideas of socio-cultural, ecological and economic landscape scale values. Accordingly, socio-cultural interaction with the natural world places structure and components into the landscape, the subsequent combinations of which are characterised by consequent ecological and economic conditions. As a consequence compositional, structural, spatial and temporal differences produce different value outcomes. This thesis explores these value outcomes illustrating the multi-dimensional nature of the relationships that society experience with their surrounding landscape, across a range of case study wood-fuel producing landscapes. The case study landscapes describe traditional silvo-pastoral management, Natura 2000 forest, primarily managed around ideas of ecosystem goods and services, co-operatively and commercially owned sustainable forestry. Differences in value are observed between and within landscapes, value domains and value components. These differences reflect tensions that exist between sustainability and society’s continued use of natural resources. Consequently value articulates the nature of relationships between and within multiple value components, characterised by competing socio-cultural, ecological, economic interests. Thus value, as a concept, is built through an understanding of the connected, embedded nature of society’s relationship with the natural world. Using a novel fuzzy logic modelling based approach to valuation, the consequences of land-use choices and the associated changes across socio-cultural, ecological and economic value domains are made visible. Understanding the complex nature of these interrelated and interdependent relationships can inform the political and institutional decision making and policy setting process. In this manner knowledge of interaction, interdependence and the reality of trade-offs, consistent with systems describe by finitude, can support and facilitate deliberative discourse. Where the true nature of value is considered an emergent property expressed through an appreciation of the value components and the outcomes of their relationships. Thus value is fundamentally a comparative property and not the outcome of an accumulative argument.

Abstract:
Our value of people and craft are linked. With the rise of fast production  industry, and the lack of transparency when it comes to a role of consumption, we have become detached from making processes. This detachment is  detrimental to our understanding and empathy for other people but also to ourselves. It perpetuates disposable ways of living and keeps us reliant on  disposable consumption.  Craft is an undervalued tool which can be utilised in historical learning as well  as anthropological study today. In doing so, we are able to understand more about humanity by inspecting craft through the ‘three facet’ lens. We are then  able to develop empathy for other people and other cultures, through the non- tangible space created during the process of crafting. For those who do craft,  this recognition is empowering and enables cultural ownership. It also empowers us as individuals, when we are able to produce something ourselves  and physically see the learning process.  This means we can recognise who has made our objects, and appreciate the  time, skill and commitment which goes into the undertaking. This encourages us to appreciate objects, to consider our ways of living and move away from  disposable consumption.  Through a comparison of the relationship to craft that is held in Peru, with that  of the relationship we hold in the UK, and broadened by my experience living and teaching in Sweden, I conclude that industrialisation and colonialism has a  role to play, but ultimately, the power and potential of craft, is physically in our own hands.  I propose using the ‘three facets’; Utility, Aesthetics and Connectivity, as a way to break down the information documented through craft, to analyse, at a deep  level, what can be gained from craft appreciation.

Abstract:
There are multiple laws to consider during reconstructions. In practice, some of these laws are challenging to combine, which inevitably sometimes leads to deviation. BBR 29 and PBL (2010:900) requires accessibility adaptation during reconstructions and that some exceptions are allowed during specific circumstances. The purpose of this paper is to examine accessibility adaptation throughout Boverket’s building process and the priorities made when conflicting regulations give contrary outcomes. What are the challenges and what exceptions to the rules are acceptable? More precisely, this paper will examine accessibility adaptation of culturally valued buildings, since it is not unusual that these laws collide. The study includes a literature study, qualitative interviews and a case study. Based on the data, it is clear that each project is unique and has individual characteristics and challenges. Thus, it is not possible to draw general conclusions. However, the practical examples emerging in the data, as well as the case study, indicate some patterns. The majority of the accessibility adaptation is done during the third stage of the building process. Many deviations are necessary due to discovering challenges too late or due to unforeseen practical implications during the development of accessibility solutions. If experts are involved earlier, as well as continuously consulting during the entire process, less deviations could be necessary. This is supported by the case study where an expert was included much earlier, before final decisions on accessibility solutions were made, and the collaboration continued throughout the full project. The constant access to expertise and added time for accessibility solutions, resulted in creative solutions in favor of accessibility adaptation. Few deviations were made. The study indicates that when buildings with a cultural value must be protected, it often makes it difficult for accessibility adaptation in practice. In these cases, the deviation is more often made from accessibility rather than cultural value preservation.

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate and analyze how three different actors linked to the urban transformation in the city of Kiruna, in this case LKAB, the Municipality of Kiruna and the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten, believe that the identity of a historical monument that is marked cultural heritage is affected by future relocation. The second part of the study is to investigate the impact the building might have on the city in the future. This study is based on the relocation of Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården. The study is based on a qualitative approach in which five informants from the three actors were interviewed. The interviews have been analyzed through thematic analysis, where a combination of theoretical thematic analysis and empirical thematic analysis was used.   The result shows that the new location of Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården is preferred to be in a suitable context close to other cultural buildings. All informants agree that accessibility is a fundamental element in, which a synergistic effect is an increase in visitor numbers. Since the greatest value around Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården is Hjalmar Lundbohm and his deeds, the identity can still be passed on even though the place is not the same. The informants agree that it is important with cultural references in a city so people have something to relate to.

Blaviesciunaite, Aiste. "Cultural values embedded in building environmental performance assessment methods : a comparison of LEED-Canada and Japan`s CASBEE." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42862.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines cultural values embedded in the LEED-Canada and CASBEE building environmental performance assessment methods, with particular emphasis on those that relate to collective attitudes toward nature in two different contexts: Canada and Japan. The structure and content of LEED-Canada and CASBEE are compared through the lenses of biophilia, technology, and information to expose how the implicit factors that shape society’s composition, structure, industries and understanding influence the priorities and emphases in the two assessment methods. The consequences of the study are fourfold. Firstly, it provides a critically important lens through which to view side-by-side comparisons of building environmental assessment systems. Secondly, by contrasting the differences and identifying similarities in the two countries, the work provides a more informed basis for understanding the transferability of green building design ideas from one culture to another and what problems/opportunities could potentially arise. Thirdly, the study adds weight to the argument that it is critically important to look at buildings as an integral part of natural, cultural, social and economic systems rather than isolated entities. Finally, it seriously questions whether the lack of culture-specific considerations has potentially adverse effects when promoting built environment sustainability in the long term.

Milholland, Sharon. "Native Voices and Native Values in Sacred Landscapes Management: Bridging the Indigenous Values Gap on Public Lands Through Co-Management Policy." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194070.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a qualitative investigation into Navajo citizen opinion on the need and form of a federal-tribal co-management model for sacred lands held in federal stewardship. The central question in this inquiry is, are co-management agreements appropriate for sacred landscapes management, and if so, how would they work? In other words, what are the issues, fundamental elements and core values of a "best-practices" sacred lands co-management model? This question is important because Native sacred lands protection and access are essential to reinforcing cultural identity and well-being, and revitalizing tribal communities. Across the United States, these places are being desecrated or destroyed at an alarming rate by commercial enterprise, public recreation, and political indifference. Native Peoples are also denied access to sacred sites for traditional subsistence or ceremonial purposes. This neglect of traditional Native cultural values in sacred lands management is referred to in this analysis as the "Indigenous values gap." Navajo response is focused on three Diné sacred landscapes, the Dinétah in northwest New Mexico, and the San Francisco Peaks and Canyon de Chelly, both located in northeast Arizona. These are large, multi-jurisdictional resources that are critical to Navajo culture and religion, and are currently under physical or legal threat. Navajo citizens in this inquiry generally agree that sacred lands co-management agreements between the Navajo Nation and federal agencies are desirable as instruments that can formalize the "practice" of genuine power-sharing relative to the management of cultural property. They also agree that co-management is not yet practical as a governance structure and philosophy until the Federal Government changes its perspective toward sharing management decisions with a Native nation. Navajo citizens also argue that comanagement is not practical until the Navajo Nation builds the capable institutions and sacred lands management vision on which to base co-management agreement development and implementation. The community development concepts of the Harvard Nation-Building model are central to building effective sacred lands management plans and co-management regimes. A "best-practices" model of sacred lands co-management blends the sacred principles of the Navajo doctrine of hozho with the secular principles of property rights, protected areas, and nation-building.

Abstract:
At the rebuilding of Östermalms Saluhall a proposal has been made to add insulation to the roof. The cultural historical values of the building is set against reconstruction requirements of the building regulations made by the National board of Housing, Building and Planning. Today, requirements for a new construction are the same as for an reconstruction of a building. Contradictions therefore arise in the rebuilding of the market hall because of the difficulty to achieve the construction requirements as well as the reconstruction requirements for the parts that are to be changed. The parts that are studied is two details of the roof and they are designed and analysed by technical building aspects, cultural historical values and by legal requirements. The cultural historical values are threatened by redevelopment, but at the same time Stockholm City wants to maximize the energy efficiency of the building. The study is therefore focusing on how to best maximize energy efficiency of the building and follow the redevelopment requirements that exist without corrupting the building.

Abstract:
Specialists in conservation have recently reached a consensus about accepting cultural values as the basis of both problems and solutions within historic environments. In this respect, besides tangible properties, the intangible values need to be considered in the conservation studies. This study aims to develop a conceptual framework and methodology for the analysis and the conservation of historic environments as entities of intangible and tangible values to provide the integration of intangible values in conservation studies. As an entity, a historical urban fabric is formed by tangible features, namely, the physical structure made of built and natural structures
and intangible values, specifically, cultural practices and expressions within the built environments, meanings expressed by them and values attributed to them. Understanding and documenting intangible values which shape tangible values, help to explain the variability of buildings and settlement forms within historic environments. This study develops a conceptual and methodological framework for the documentation, conservation and sustainability of the interrelations of intangible and tangible values in the case of Ibrahimpasa Village. First, the research questions are elaborated to understand the relations between tangible and intangible values theoretically and to develop a methodological framework for the documentation and analysis of these. Then the conceptual and methodological framework is applied to the case of Ibrahimpasa Village using a combined methodology composed of the case study and the ethnographic research. As a result, the study puts forward a conservation approach, asserting that the sustainability of the interrelations between tangible and intangible values is vital for the conservation of historic environments and that specific approaches need to be developed for particular interrelations to provide their continuation.

Abstract:
To use existing buildings that would otherwise be empty could be a part of the solution regarding the housing shortage in Sweden. When changing older buildings, it is important to consider the cultural and architectural values. When changing usage to dwellings and improving energy efficiency it is important that it is carried out carefully on older valuable buildings. The purpose of the work is to contribute to an increased understanding of how the architectural and cultural-historical values of an older building can be preserved despite a change in use from one function to another. The goal of the work is to examine how a cultural-historical valuable building can be changed to functional dwellings in conjunction with reduced energy usage. The work is based on a case study of a school building from 1850 in Vanstad, Skåne.   An introducing review of theory is a bout older building and installation solution, cultural value and qualities in dwellings. Which acquis to follow during reconstruction and change of usage, design requirements according to BBR and actions to reduce energy usage. Four different studies regarding reduction in energy usage on older brick buildings are studied. The case study building is not K-marked but is pointed out as a valuable building that is worth preserving in documents from Sjöbo. It is recommended that buildings constructed before the 1900s should be kept as authentic as possible.   Based on information gathered through inventory of archive material and inventory of the case study building a description on the case study building is made which is the basis for a design proposal for changed usage from school building to housing. Sjöbo is requesting smaller apartments which the design proposal considers. The design proposal resulted in 7 apartments where 6 out of 7 has a living space between 35 m2 and 55 m2. Because of the buildings age and older building techniques the building does not reach todays energy requirement. The design proposal documents which actions that is possible to implement to reduce the energy usage. Every apartment is reviewed to control which qualities is achieved in the dwellings. The measures advocated is: additional insulation on walls and roof, sealing of the climate shell, change of ventilations system, heating system, installation of solar cells and improvement of window and doors.   The result shows how it is possible to design functional dwellings in an older cultural-historical valuable building. To apply energy efficiency measures to reduce the energy usage and improving the indoor climate is also demonstrated in the result. Regarding profitability considering reconstruction, changed usage, reduction in energy usage and design of dwellings more in-depth studies could be made regarding the actual energy savings and LCC calculations for further economic insight.

Abstract:
This report is the result of a degree project in building engineering, at an advanced level. The project evaluated a building from a technical and historical point of view, and focused on its energy consumption, particularly the energy used for heating. The building in question was a small apartment building in Strömsholm, Sweden. It was made in 1902, from vertical logs, a not so common form of the traditional log house. The goal of the project was to evaluate if the energy consumption could be reduced in accordance with building preservation regulations, that is without damaging any of the building’s cultural or historical values. The building was surveyed with the help of archive and literature studies, interviews and inspections. Based on these findings, supplementary insulation on the inner side of the climate screen was decided on. The program IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was used to make computer simulations of the energy consumption of the building for five different alternatives of supplementary insulation. Part of the project was also to investigate whether IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was suitable for energy simulations of old buildings. The moisture balance of the outer walls was calculated manually to see if the supplemental insulation constituted a risk when it came to the moisture sensitivity of the construction. The result of the computer simulations, combined with building physics, shows that the energy consumption for heating could be reduced, especially if the roof was to be insulated. However, these results cannot and should not be seen as anything but indications, because of the uncertainty of the input data. The data on ventilation and air flows was considered to be one of the main sources of error. Furthermore, there were signs that the design of the computer models was far from optimal. The result of the moisture calculations shows that the moisture sensitivity is indeed increased. IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was judged as more suitable for simulations of new buildings than of old ones, due to the complexity of the latter, but the program can still be used as an aid for energy evaluations of old buildings if it is used in the right way.

Abstract:
The work aims to increase knowledge of the medieval roof structures and how they are built. By making an inventory and building survey of two roof structures in medieval churches. The result of the study is intended to increase knowledge of this type of building, its cultural-historical values and provide a basis for long-term and sustainable management. The two churches are Drevs gamla kyrka (The old church of Drev) and Hemmesjös gamla kyrka (The old church of Hemmesjö), both are in Småland Sweden. The churches are well-preserved and have a history to tell through themselves. The study was possible through onsite study, article study and two interviews with Samuel Palmblad, Kulturparken Småland and Mattias Hallgren, Traditionsbärarna. The results have shown that the churches are built in a Romanic style which is an architectural expression on a building technology used during the early medieval time (12th century), with one part of the old church of Hemmesjö being built by using a later found building technology also called gothic style which was more common during late medieval time. During the interviews it was mentioned that these churches are heritage to Sweden and therefore need to be treated accordingly. There is still knowledge to be found and understood which will help with the preservation of the churches and their historical value. If the knowledge does not exist, there can be faults that happen which means that the values can be lost or misused which will lead to the destruction of a part of history. With little to no documents from the time they were built, it will be difficult to maintain for the people who work with the preservation if responsibility is not taken to learn more about these churches.  This study will look at the importance of preserving these churches and their roof constructions with the help of explaining the building technology and the culture-historical values.

Abstract:
This study was carried out in Backaryd’s church following a proposal from Ankdammen konsult. Backaryd’s church was built more than 200 years ago in Ronneby municipality in Blekinge County. Due to changes in heating methods and energy requirements since the church was built, the church today does not meet the energy and comfort requirements of today’s buildings. The study of the Backaryd’s church aims to investigate the floor construction in the church and to find out what factors may be at risk of moisture damage. The study will analyse the church and mainly the condition of the crawl space. In addition, some improvement measures will be proposed to get a comfortable heating inside the church with an appropriate energy use. Both law and society place high requirements on the preservation of valuable and cultural-historical buildings for future generations. In addition, any changes to churches that have been built before 1939 must be approved by the county administrative board. Results from the study show that relative humidity does not reach critical levels either in the crawl space or the church room. There are also no injuries such as mold and rot attacks on the structure. The inventory is of good quality and lacks damage such as cracks and rots. The writers have come up with the following improvement measures:● An annual entertainment of water management systems in crawl space. ● Cover the stone walls with plastic wrap on the inside and make them as dense as possible. ● Place the base of the panty bottom from below up against the floor beam. ● Insulate the floor structure with mineral wool. ● Place a plastic wrap all over the ground in the crawl space. ● install a dehumidifier.
● Installera avfuktare i krypgrunden.

Abstract:
Cultural values in Detailed Development plans is a case study that examines antiquarian preliminary studies developed for the planning process. The main theme that the essay examines was how methods for identifying cultural values affect the antiquarian preliminary study. The conclusion shows that it is often difficult to read whether a method has been used or not as it is not always clearly presented in the preliminary study. Furthermore, the thesis has shown that the antiquarian who produces the planning data - in this case study - does not fully assert the cultural value against other interests in the planning process. At the same time, there are no requirements today for such a position to be taken.

Abstract:
The concern of climate change and Greenhouse Gas emission have increased national consideration toward energy efficiency. Despite noticeable action which have taken by EU cities and Sweden government to mitigate the climate change, there is still shortage in appropriate energy measurements in old residential buildings. Due to the fact that a large share of residential buildings in Sweden have constructed more than 40 years ago, most of them need energy renovation  to enhance efficiency and saving more energy. In order to encourage home owners toward energy efficiency renovations, some cost effective measurements have to introduce to people with the view of effect on property value.  To this end, 50 detached houses and villas in Kronoberg County in Sweden have been chosen and analyzed to identify how renovation can increase the property value. These houses have been set in different categories by location, heating system, deep renovation, energy and aesthetic renovation. After that, compares the sold prices and biding prices for each category. Moreover, it analyses the people behavior toward renovation to see how can motive people to adopt necessary energy efficient renovation. This research also shows the current situation of building renovation, the most favourite renovation which are adopted by people as well as providing information about the factors affect the value of the house after renovation.

Abstract:
Value stream mapping (VSM) is a visualization tool helps to understand processes by using of stream lined work process. The importance of this process is to decrease the activity that does not add value to the final product and in order to increase the efficiency and production.   The purpose of this thesis is to create dynamic value stream maps of a process by using simulation. By creating dynamic value stream maps makes it possible to analyze more complex systems than traditional VSM. Simulation can be used with value stream mapping to give it power and flexibility in order to dynamically change the state of the system.   The spiral welding production line has been working for many years. The company is facing an increase in the demand along with possibilities of later product development so that they could get more efficiency, less costs, higher quality, and a dynamic workforce plan according to the varying demand. This cannot be achieved unless studying the process inside out and finding new areas that have the potential for improvement. In this thesis I have tried to investigating these areas and the focus is on finding solutions for improving them.   This thesis work performs at the production process of spiral welding steel plates for analysis the buffers, calculate cycle, process time and reduce waste by using VSM and DVSM. It has been trying to provide readers with a clear prospective of the company, a precise analysis on the mentioned production line and apparently areas of improvement in the production process.

Abstract:
The U.S. intelligence community is without peer in providing high-quality, detailed technical intelligence. Due to the intelligence community's efforts, the USG has a thorough understanding of its adversaries' activities. What we propose is to develop a means by which that same intelligence community can use cultural factors to answer the question "Why?" Although cultural intelligence plays a key role in many of America's political and military successes, the maintenance of a broad-based, detailed cultural intelligence capability has thus far proven elusive. With the advent of networked collaboration tools, the intelligence community now has the ability to deploy a virtual cultural intelligence community. Such a community, based on a wiki, would incur almost no monetary or bureaucratic overhead, and could be configured so that the loss of any single intelligence organization would have minimal negative effect on its mission.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the low-bid system has played a major role in public building construction sector for a long time, this system has arguably delivered work of low quality, an continued and rising number of claims within the industry. With these challenges in mind, the Korean government has sought to examine and possibly adopt best-value procurement as an alternative approach to delivering public building construction projects within Korea. The reality however is that although delivering arguably a number of advantages, best-value does present the government with its own peculiar challenges because of a lack of a precise understanding of what 'best-value' means. Hence, in this study, the author seeks to examine the concept of best-value and its application to Korean public building construction. To achieve the stated objectives, the author draws upon extant literature in 'value' procurement to critically examine the impact of 'best-value' concepts in Korean public building procurement. Data is obtained from a survey of 180 managers involved in the procurement and management of public buildings in Korea. Utilising 'best-value' criteria drawn from literature, the author employs Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to weight 'best-value' criteria identified through the survey. Based on the results of the AHP exercise, the following are found; (i) value depends on the state of each individual building which can be defined from a 'need' perspective, (ii) the primary criteria for 'best-value' in Korea public construction projects were 'serviceability', 'safety', 'comfort' 'environmental friendliness', 'economical feasibility' and 'artistry' and finally that (iii) the importance of each primary criteria was dependent on the building type.

Strydom, Booyens Danna. "Ethical leadership across cultural value orientations." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64825.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few decades many serious ethical problems have been reported in both business and public organisations. In response there has been increasing scholarly research interest in the construct of ethical leadership. At the same time, a growing body of scholarly knowledge dealing with cross-cultural leadership suggests that cultural factors influence the relationship between leadership and outcomes. This has highlighted a need to understand the relation between individual culture orientations and leadership. Moreover, since ethical leadership is a relatively new construct, the effect of culture on ethical leadership specifically has to date received little attention. This study undertakes to address this gap by evaluating the effect of cultural value orientations at the individual level of analysis on the relationship between ethical leadership at the middle management level and selected employee behavioural outcomes. A cross-sectional survey study is done using a multinational emerging market data sample embodying cultural diversity. Social cognitive theory is used to elucidate how cultural orientations of individuals change the social learning process through which ethical leadership influences employee outcomes. Structural equation modelling is used to test hypotheses derived from theory, including moderation of relationships by cultural value orientations. The research findings contribute an empirically validated theoretical explanation of how the cultural value orientations of individualism-collectivism and power distance, measured at the individual level of analysis, influence the relationship between ethical leadership and employee outcomes such as organisational citizenship behaviour, ethical climate, and performance. The findings of the study advance our understanding of the effect of cultural value orientations on the relationship between ethical leadership and employee outcomes and should prove useful for multinational enterprises wishing to create an ethical climate and instil effective ethical leadership practices across different nationalities and cultural groups. The study empirically confirms that ethical leadership does not only relate positively to the ethical climate of an organisation but also relates positively to actual employee performance. Further research is recommended to determine the causal direction of such relationships.

Abstract:
This study examines the articulated vision of a new Catholic primary school in order to describe and assess its developing organisational culture. The following questions provide the major focus of the study: I How and to what extent does the Vision Statement describe the developing Catholic school culture at St Clare of Assisi Primary School? 2. What are the common beliefs and values underlying the Vision Statement at St Clare of Assisi Primary School? A review of the literature reveals that many educational researchers stress the importance of schools developing a strong, coordinated, cohesive and positive culture. The need for this culture to be based on a clearly articulated vision, embodying shared values and beliefs is also indicated and this provides the rationale for the study. A number of frameworks for school culture are examined and adapted to develop a conceptual framework for the study. The resulting Model for Developing Catholic School Culture provides a structure which enables collected data to be sorted and analysed, so that the research questions can be addressed. This study utilises the methodology of ethnographic research. Data collection strategies include participant observation, interviews, surveys, and other sources including school records and documents, photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. The findings are organised under five headings, each of which represents a belief articulated in the school's Vision Statement. These beliefs are examined to see how they are enacted verbally, visually and behaviourally by the school community Conclusions are drawn as to the relevance of the Vision Statement to the school community Other significant values and beliefs evident from an examination of the data are also identified The study concludes that the Vision Statement effectively describes the developing culture of the school for there is congruence between its beliefs and actions. What emerges of particular significance from this study is the importance of a school community articulating a shared vision. A school's Vision Statement serves a dual purpose It is the filter which allows the shared beliefs and values of the school community to be articulated, while at the same time serving as a scaffold for checking if these shared beliefs and values are being enacted by the community.

Abstract:
A public building should create an added value to clients, construction professionals and users resulting in an efficient construction project as well as an economically and socially sustainable building over its whole lifetime. In the meantime it is difficult to describe the social benefits of public buildings in general, but even more difficult to describe public buildings with a cultural content, e.g. concert halls and theatres, which supposed to create emotional and knowledge-based experiences. Likewise economic benefits of an investment in a public building are difficult to describe in terms of sustainable development in the region. The overall purpose of this thesis is to increase understanding of value creation in development and construction of public buildings. The focus is on evaluations needed to ensure that public construction projects are planned, designed and produced to fit the particular needs they are meant to meet. Ideas and end-user needs are transformed into the client's requirements in a written brief, also termed the building programme. These early phases of the building process are discussed and analysed in the thesis from the following perspectives: 1) development of ideas, 2) relation between clients and construction professionals when developing functional and technical specifications and 3) management of multicultural activities in the building. The research is based on a case study of the effects when building houses of culture, i.e. buildings for multiple cultural activities. The case study consists of one comprehensive single case where the building process and the effects of building a house of culture were studied. Interviews with different stakeholders, observations and a survey of visitors were conducted. Empirical data analysis resulted in a value based briefing model for analysis of stakeholder and end-user value as well as effects on the built environment. The model was applied in a study of four other houses of culture using interviews with clients and end-users as well as secondary data describing end-users' evaluation of the building. The main result is a deeper understanding of how public clients identify, develop and transform end-user needs into a strategic written brief, creating added value in the built environment over time. When developing ideas the public clients would benefit from developing a strategic brief, where end-user needs are related to the building's activities and overall goals. Developing functional and technical specifications, clients and construction professionals should benefit from including value based briefing as a method for identification and evaluation of effective and sustainable functional and technical specifications. The value based model is built on construction project parameters: time, cost and quality and developed with a time-geographical theoretical perspective where the building's quality includes design parameters describing end-user value in terms of activities, form & shape and place & space. The time-geographical perspective gives an understanding of how end-user needs and stakeholder values develop over time.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Construction (Construction Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019
This study examines the influence of a green building concept on the value of a building. Comprehensive literature was carefully reviewed to provide an overview on the concept of green building and its influence on the value of a building, subject to its overall benefits in South Africa. Several studies have been conducted giving guidelines for the determination of the best capitalisation rates needed for valuing green building properties. However, the information is still inadequate in providing evidence of the relationship between green building features and its influence on the value of a building, leaving most buildings with green features undervalued. This is a peculiar concern this research seeks to bring to notice and with its limited scope proffer possible recommendations and conclusions. A quantitative approach was adopted, facilitating the collection of data through the use of a questionnaire survey that involved randomly selected construction professionals in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The motive behind the adoption of the quantitative method is to facilitate a reliable manner of satisfying the established aim and objectives for determining current practices in valuing green buildings. The above description paved the way for the use of theoretical, statistical and mathematical techniques for computation and interpretation of data to support objective reasoning and measures. Data was analysed with the application of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis tools, wherein the mean values and one-way analysis of variance were carefully determined. The findings demonstrate that the benefits of green building are critical for enhancing a building’s value. The benefits are divided into tangible and intangible benefits to classify impact on a building value. The classification of the impact cut across reduction of the consumption of energy and water, lowering operating cost and developing flexible design options. Some of the significant features of the green building include water metering, a photovoltaic solar panel system, electrical sub-metering, high performance building façade and skylight and borehole water. Further findings indicate that kitchen and water-closet (WC) water efficient fittings is ranked highest with a mean value (MV) of 3.91, followed by megawatt photovoltaic solar plant with an MV of 3.79, and water metering for monitoring and leak detection with an MV of 3.74. In light of the MVs, it is evident that these features significantly influence the value of a green building. Subsequently, the features are classified as: eco-friendly materials and energy conservation feature; water saving and renewable energy feature; safety feature; natural day light and control feature; sun shade and light feature; water management and flooring feature, and special utility feature. Information as gathered in the study demonstrate that the current practices engaged in valuing green building projects do not specifically differ among construction participants, although the perceptions of construction professionals regarding the most significant green building features that enhance the value of a building is on the average. Modalities towards promoting the concept and value of green building require resolute actions that should be implemented by the Green Building Council of South Africa. This concerns the creation of new growth strategies to escalate the awareness and implementation of a green building concept. Based on the benefits and significant features of green building, as determined through respondent affirmatives, this study broadens the view of construction professionals on the influence of a green building concept on the value of a building in South Africa.

Peterson, Meghan. "Cultural entrepreneurship : unlocking potential through value creation." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/34526.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the challenges and opportunities of cultural entrepreneurship, exploring current conceptualisations of cultural entrepreneurs and to find new perspectives and recommendations for cultural entrepreneurs of the future. Cultural entrepreneurship is a contested, yet essential aspect of the growth of artists and arts organisations globally. Though there are similarities, this research demonstrates that cultural entrepreneurs from different backgrounds, industries and of varied sizes need different things and have different barriers so cannot be understood in the same way. Digital technologies and local networks do offer new possibilities for innovation however these are limited in scope and require further investigation and investment. Despite psychological, political and financial barriers to entrepreneurship in the creative industries, finding a balance between artistic, social, economic and institutional innovation for the various actors throughout the arts offers key insights to how artists and arts organisations can be more entrepreneurial. Through a grounded theory approach, this research connects previously disparate fields of cultural policy, social entrepreneurship and business model innovation to derive new perspectives of how cultural entrepreneurs can survive and thrive in the dynamically shifting world. Themes that emerged through the data analysis connect in new ways to Cohendet et al.’s (2012) ‘Anatomy of a Creative City’, outlining the underground, middleground and upperground actors; Albinsson’s (2017) theories of the quadruple bottom line in the creative industries; and a value ecosystem’s approach with a focus on value creation (Allee, 2002; Curtis, 2017). From this combination of literature and data collected, a novel approach to understanding cultural entrepreneurs emerges, creating a model to understand more holistically how value is created and captured for the artist or arts organisation. This model has a range of practical approaches intended to provide tangible pathways into combining the concepts of the quadruple bottom line, value ecosystems and different conceptualisations of cultural entrepreneurs, offering a novel contribution to all of these fields in addition to, and most significantly the topic of cultural entrepreneurship.

Hughes, Sarah Louise. "Understanding cultural participation and value in Barnsley." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/42515.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sets out to question representations of culture constructed in relation to the English town of Barnsley. The thesis asks whether such representations might be implicated in the reproduction of social and economic inequalities in relation to distinct geographical places and their communities and seeks to reveal new representations generated through detailed oral history interviews. Drawing upon official statistics and a number of example press representations of Barnsley in relation to culture, the thesis begins by discussing existing constructions of Barnsley’s cultural ecology. The thesis then considers narratives of cultural participation generated through oral history interviews undertaken with people from Barnsley in order to investigate the articulated experiences and stated cultural values of individuals who have spent their lives in the town. The thesis gives voice to people from Barnsley as a route to complicating understandings of the cultural ecology of the town. The thesis also briefly investigates a key moment in the historical development of a particular cultural institution, the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation, seeking to understand the relationship between this history and some of the distinctive aspects of cultural participation and value forming a part of Barnsley’s cultural ecology. The thesis seeks to inform cultural policy debate through deepening understanding of, and gaining recognition for, particular aspects of cultural participation and articulations of cultural value existing within the town of Barnsley. Moreover, the thesis argues for the inclusion of diverse perspectives within cultural policy debates and decision making processes at all levels in order that our collective understanding of what culture might entail is enriched and our cultural policymaking is democratised, limiting opportunity for a narrowly defined ‘culture’ to be utilised as a tool in the reproduction of social and economic inequalities within society.

Abstract:
Looking at Washington D.C.`s Downtown and observing its domination by office blocks, which contribute little to street life on weekends, my thesis is dealing with the broad topic of cultural sustainability. I began my thesis thinking about a project dealing with ecological sustainability, but not long after starting to research, I gained the knowledge that the cultural aspect is often forgotten or minor. Thus the design got inspired through the idea of reviving a site in D.C. and to give the different occupants of the building the chance to sense, hear, see and eventually interact with each other. The project is giving an opportunity for architecture to get involved in peopleâ s life, not just as a room to live, work and study but to lead their interaction with each other and with the city itself. To create such a mixed used building I decided to connect three main characters of a city in one building: Work Space, which includes retail and office space, Living Space for students and professors and Education, which is a literature department library. A labour intensive model making process helped me to develop the design for a mixed used building where the different programs penetrate into each other`s realm and where the city is not excluded from the building but takes part in it.

Bin, Hasbollah H. R. "A theoretical framework for conserving cultural values of heritage buildings in Malaysia from the perspective of facilities management." Thesis, University of Salford, 2014. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/31934/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to develop a Theoretical Framework for Conserving Cultural Values of Heritage Buildings in Malaysia from the perspective of Facilities Management. It proposes the establishment of Cultural Values of Heritage Buildings (CVHB) and Facilities Management (FM) in sustaining the physical condition, authenticity, and integrity of heritage buildings in Malaysia. The linkages between CVHB and FM will help to produce guidelines for conserving CVHB from the FM perspective (CVHB-FM) at the initial phase of conservation in Malaysia. The thesis adapted the Critical Realist approach in understanding the world by distinguishing the reality from factual and empirical, and recognising the social structures in the phenomenon. The research process “onion” was adapted to achieve the goal of the thesis. A Case-Study was conducted based on Malacca’s World Heritage City. A single holistic embedded approach was employed from the three levels of conservation practitioners who were strategic, tactical, and operational. The Matrix Thematic mapped the main elements of the study (CVHB, FM, conservation practitioners, and conservation documents) in a robust manner. Expert Interviews and Document Reviews were the main tools used in gathering the data. The raw qualitative data was then analysed via Content Analysis and Template Analysis. This thesis identifies the CVHB as being social, economic, political, historic, aesthetical, scientific, age, and ecological. These were associated and epistemologically constructed with FM perspectives of people, place, process, and technology. The embedded levels of respondents from the conservation practitioners have explained and elaborated on the connotation between the characteristics of CVHB and FM in developing the theoretical framework of the research. The thesis also provided insights into how the perspective of FM was associated with CVHB criteria in conserving a heritage building in Malaysia.

Abstract:
My art practice research project Frankenstein2; or, The Monster of Main Stream involves using all and only the words from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1831) to create a new contemporary novel and associated collaborative works, facilitated by a customised database software programme, FrankenWriter [FrankenWriter was developed by French robotics artist, Patrick Tresset.] The resulting reconfigurations of Shelley’s words become vehicles to rehearse contemporary political, theoretical and artistic concerns, while creating new dialogical relationships and exploring ideas of the expanded novel and dispersed authorship in the digital age. My theoretical research is largely concerned with the transformation of cultural value within neoliberal and computational rationalities, with a focus on self-reflexive methodologies that deploy cultural objects as dispositifs (apparatuses) or lenses through which I analyse and produce the reconfiguration of knowledge. The thesis implicitly and playfully challenges the proposition for newness in cultural research through neologisms such as ‘datocracy’, ‘infomanticism’ and ‘LouisQuatorzisation’ in which fragments of data assume sublime agency and cultural objects play out power relations, thereby representing potent apparatuses for everyman and totalitarian alike. At the core is my construction of a methodology maudite, a promiscuous dispositif that draws from diverse existing and evolving methodologies, theories and paradigms in the production of exorbitant imaginary relationships between fragments of cultural data, illustrated by the key example of Last Tango Inception, an illicit conjoining of two films that would not ordinarily be seen together. As an artist engaged in performative conceptual writing, I am interested in the proposition that methodology, in its ideological maturation of process, might now subsume form and content.

Thomen, Carl R. "Cultural technology and sporting value : a philosophical investigation." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2012. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/1923/.

Full text
Abstract:
Few people would dispute that today’s world is highly technological. But what do we mean when we talk of ‘technology’, and is it possible to quantify its effect on human beings? This thesis considers the relationship between technology and humanity as being one of symbiosis - we shape our tools and in turn, our tools shape us. The nature of this relationship is described by ‘essentialist’ critics of technology as narrowing the focus of human endeavour towards a technological value-set dominated by efficiency, to the detriment of other values important to the human animal. Sport provides an excellent framework for examining the impact of technology defined in this way, as it is a ubiquitous and highly technological arena. If it can be plausibly argued that an increasingly technological and performance-centred approach to sport is detrimental to an holistic understanding of sport’s potential to benefit both the individual and society as a whole, it may be the case that sport provides accessible and irrefutable evidence for the truth of the essentialists’ claims regarding the impact on society of technology writ large. This thesis presents such an argument. Furthermore, if we grant the essentialist critics their contention and admit the impossibility of returning to an ‘untechnological’ world, we have to find some way of restoring and maintaining an holistic existence in the face of the restricted value-set imposed by our technology and our interactions with it. To this end, the latter part of this thesis promotes ‘metaphysical’ sporting values (freedom, self-affirmation and beautiful, harmonious action) as a way to counter-balance the impact of technology in sport and suggest ways to solve the ‘technological problem’ more generally.

Temelat, Neslihan. "Identity Building Through Cultural Policy In The European Union." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/3/12609402/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze the identity building dimension of the process of European integration and to examine how the Community cultural policy has been constructed by investigating the general discourse produced by the Community institutions since the 1970s in order to inculcate a sense of belonging among European citizens, to give an emotional aspect to the integration process, and to overcome the legitimacy problem. The themes of &ldquo
unity&rdquo
and &ldquo
diversity,&rdquo
enshrined in the official motto of &ldquo
unity in diversity&rdquo
of the European Commission, constitute the cornerstone of the Community cultural policy. This thesis analyzes the embodiment of European identity in the Community cultural policy with a special focus on three selected areas: audiovisual, educational and language policies. In conclusion, this thesis maintains that the mild, abstract and ambiguous notion of &ldquo
unity in diversity&rdquo
that accommodates heterogeneous European cultures and characteristics in conformity with the multi-layered EU polity is the most plausible and desirable mode of European cultural identity for the EU bureaucratic elites. However, this identity building strategy has limitations stemming from the intrinsic nature of the EU and the absence of a coherent definition of European identity.

Abstract:
During the past decades, international trade of goods and services has been growing fast. In the globalizing market, understanding cultural differences is essential. When building customer relationships across national borders, the possibility of cultural conflicts and misunderstandings is substantial and many factors must be taken into consideration. In business-to-business market the importance of individual customers is emphasized. High customer loyalty can improve a company’s performance significantly by increasing revenue and reducing customer acquisition costs. Therefore, the importance of relationship quality cannot be questioned. This thesis is a literature review that seeks to find the key elements of cross-cultural relationship strength by first studying the elements of relationship quality and then combining these findings to the cross-cultural context.

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry severely lags behind the manufacturing industry in terms of efficiency and productivity growth. This lag is a result of the fragmented nature of the industry and its resistance to adopting innovative technologies and processes that enable collaboration and efficiency. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of these innovations. Since building owners ultimately absorb every cost associated with a building project, they are in the best position to lead the AEC industry into an era of increased productivity through the adoption of collaborative practices and technologies such as BIM. However, owners cannot be expected to venture down this path unless they are aware of the potential value that the proper use of BIM can create for them. Therefore, this paper provides evidence of the value created for owners and developers by the use of BIM, and conveys that evidence in a framework that follows the actual phases and tasks of a real development project. Those phases are as follows: Market Research, Feasibility Analysis, Design, Construction, and Operations. In addition to actual examples of value creation, theoretical examples of future applications are discussed. The value created for owners and developers by implementing BIM on their projects is manifested primarily in the form of improved design quality and savings in time and money.

Abstract:
Concerns about global warming are increasing, hence, the urgency to cut carbon emissions. Reducing energy consumption, including lighting energy, is seen as the primary solution. Yet, solving the environmental factor should not come at the cost of other pillars of sustainable development. Rather, maximizing the total value of the building should be the focus. Maximizing value in the context of lighting entails improving the quality of the lighting. This study has investigated how lighting simulation could help in achieving better lighting quality. The aim of the thesis was defined as to understand the underlying architecture of lighting simulation and obtain an overview of its characteristics and applications as well as to study the use of current simulation tools. The theoretical background of lighting simulation (in the domain of Systems Engineering) was reviewed from the literature. This revealed the missing and imperfect links in the solution-to-value chain. The thesis suggests the use of a new base metric, Retinal Illuminance Map, as a solution, which in combination with black box simulation of a visual system can help repair this incomplete chain. The study of the current lighting simulation tools (Paper 1) revealed that illuminance-based metrics, luminance-based metrics, daylight availability metrics, and glare indexes are the most available performance metrics in existing lighting simulation tools. Based on usability, acceptability, availability, and previous references in the literature six software programs (Radiance, DAYSIM, Evalglare, DIALux, VELUX, and VISSLA) were selected and compared. It was found that no single tool could meet all the needs of a designer, hence, simulation tool(s) should be selected (or combined) according to the requirements of project goals and the stage of design. Building on these studies, applications of lighting simulation were identified and compiled in relation to different aspects, including performance metrics, stages of design, optimization, model integration, BIM, and parametric modeling. To obtain first-hand information about lighting designers’ experience, an online survey was conducted in Sweden (Paper 2). The results showed that lighting simulation programs were widely (90%) used in Sweden for analysis and/or rendering purposes. The majority of lighting designers considered both daylight and artificial light in their design. Factors such as ease-of use, simulation time and training had more weight than accuracy and the diversity of metrics in practitioner’s eyes. Surrogate modeling was identified as a solution for speeding up simulation time, which would also enable exploration of design solution space especially in the early design stage.

Kim, Yongwoo. "Reflections of Cultural Value: Korean Automobile Corporations' Television Advertising." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/7076.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1964, Marshall McLuhan named the world "a global village". With developments of technology in communication and transportation, the notion of "globalization" is found everywhere in political, socio-economic, and cultural discourse. In marketing theory, the notion of "globalization" was introduced by Theodore Levitt in 1983, when he argued that "companies must learn to operate as if the world were one large market ignoring superficial regional and national differences and selling the same products in the same way throughout the world" (pp. 92-93). In marketing, the significance of geographical border is tapering off as corporations have expanded their businesses globally. As the consumers' needs and tastes around the world become similar with globalization, marketing and advertising directors of transnational corporations (TNC) seek to standardize advertising in the international market (Elinder, 1965; Johnsson & Thorelli, 1985). This international marketing approach seems to make sense because consumers around the world may have similar desires for qualities and values. However, it may be unrealistic to integrate the international market without considering the differences in culture, infrastructure, and development of economy and technology (Mooij, 1994). The differences in infrastructure such as transport system, distribution, available media, and legal conditions, as well as the differences in economy and technology are important to international marketing. However, the cultural difference is considered as the core of international advertising strategies because advertising is a reflection of culture. This study examined the reflection of cultural values in advertising through the analysis of experts' opinion and a content analysis of TV commercials in international markets.
