Full textThe notion of habitus represents a complex and stable whole that profoundly influences acts, attitudes, judgements and works. The objective of our research is to clarify the effects of the Catholic habitus in the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Pedro Almodóvar, two film directors who are from different periods and cultures, but who were born and raised in practicing Catholic families and who have had an education characterized as strictly religious. Iconology or the science of images presupposes that the creation of a work of art depends on several factors that combine both the family and school education of its creator as well as his social class and the conditions of the time when the creation is realized. In this context, we use the three-step analysis method (Pre-Iconographic-Iconographic-Iconographic-Iconological Analysis) developed by Panofsky that effectively shows the correlation between creation and the creator's world view (Weltanschauung). This vision manipulates artistic choices and interests (Kunstwollen). In the first part of our thesis, we define the notion of habitus and analyse the biographies of the artists. The second part deals with the analysis of the omnipresent themes belonging to the Catholic religion. We finalize our thesis by analysing three films by each of the two directors based on Catholic themes to understand the intentions of the filmmakers in creating their works (Hitchcock's Vertigo, The Wrong Man, Marnie and Almodóvar's Matador, Carne Tremula, Julieta) as well as their voluntary and instinctive choices

Full textDuring the second half of the Nineteenth century in France, religious to souls of the Purgatory has strongly been " recharged ". Many reasons contribute to explain this phenomenon, such as the importance of the cult to the Dead, the Church' s ambition of giving a new impulsion to Catholicism insisting on devoutness towards the deceased, the belief in "the great number of the Flected" and the will to fight aigainst philosophical/religious movements such as Spiritualism, that would come into opposition to the Catholic approach ot te "End of time ". A this time, the cult of Purgatory wore a thaumaturgic dimension that was missing until then, with the Dead being more than prayer for; they were prayed as true intercessors. Therefore, the Nineteenth century obviously was te greatest tirne of devotion to the souls of the Purgatory. At first, the movement showed appropriate forms of this devotion on an institutionnal aspect with the creation of Brotherhoods, the "oeuvres de messes" and various specialized religious Congregations. A devotional lightening of this trend can be seen through the prayers for te "Abandoned Souls ", the intercessions of the Dead, an increased veneration for the "Virgin of te Suffrage" as well as with te Apparitions. Finally, this devotion wore a theological sight with the rnystical fascination for the souls of the Purgatory that was considered as te "normal way to Salute ". This system's vitality has been predominant until the First World War, of which wa have tried to explain why and how it brutally broke its expansion. After this time, devotion came into a time of decline, particularly noticeably after 1930/1935, a time of deep devotional and theological changes

Full textIn the context of the disappearance of the Papal State from 1859, apparitions, inarvels and prophecies grew in number in the French and Italian Catholic communities. Their use with the aim of political and religious restoration characterized the devotional literature of this perioci and nourished the hopes of legitimist trends opposed to the governments in place. In the Italian peninsula, these forms of devotion were part of the opposition to the new political regime around the Family of Savoie. In France, they fuelled political stirrings about the comte of Chambord, especially after the defeat against Prussia and the Commune. Leveraging the political legacy of Catholic intransigence, these apocalyptic concerns spread from foci that sustained genuine networks of devotion. Facing the expansion of this nebula, which could only be partly controlled by the magisterium, the Church reacted with caution and took a pragmatic attitude in their dealing with the devotions in relation to visionaries, prophetesses and stigmatized people. The Hierarchy intervened at different levels to control spontaneous devotions and, in some cases, to condenm beliefs deemed heretic. Faced with the problem of public order, secular authorities seleetively intervened and summoned certain prophets. This time of apocalyptical stirrings was also characterized by the growing assertiveness of medical authorities in the field of mystical phenomena and by the diffusion of critical rationalism. The death of "martyr-pope" Pie IX, in january 1878, the durability of the Third Republic and the Italian monarchy, and the emergence of catholic associationism slew down the crystallization of the conflict between the Church and the political modernity

Full textSocial and economic changes in recent decades have radically transformed the realities of young adult life. These changes led the student ministry Power to Change at Université Laval to reevaluate its context and its methods in order to better reach Québécois students. The result of these reflections was to found an intentional community (called Le Voisinage, or “The Neighbourhood”) in a student quarter of Quebec City, where Christian young adults decided to move together, integrating life, faith, and mission in their milieu. This study seeks to lay a missiological foundation for this community via a deep investigation of its context and by putting the community in dialogue with a movement of evangelical intentional communities, The New Monasticism. The contextual part of this study asks two questions: in what context was Power to Change founded, and in what ways did this context lead to methods and ways of thinking thinking that are either no longer pertinent, or even distortions of the Christian mission? We argue that a ministry dedicated exclusively to evangelism and discipleship is only relevant in a highly christianized context, and that the Church Growth Theology that we have inherited is patterned after the imaginary of consumer society. As a result, this missiology engages in the dynamics of consumerism and proves harmful both for young adults and for the Church. We finish by evaluating how neo-monastic missiology, based on the idea of the Church as a community of witness, and its expanded perspective of the Kingdom of God can balance a missiology centered on evangelism and individual salvation. A balanced missiology and a balanced practice can thus help the community Le Voisinage better serve students who are facing the pressures of consumer society.

Full textPresented as an organization model to face globalization in the early 90’s by Bartlett & Ghoshal, The transnational has inspired lot of researchers. The problematic of this thesis aims to verify whether the transnational structure is an organization which fits firms only. With the help of a case study applied to a network structure “The catholic University of West Africa” and based on existing Theories in management and multinational governance, our work will attempt to test this hypothesis in an experimental research field in an African Context. This field is illustrated by a non-profit religious organization. The results allowed us to realize that the transnational model can be implemented in this kind of organization, but one should proceed step by step to achieve a global integration of all the operational and functional activities, starting by those alleged to be more relevant. The impact of religion and non-profit organization has been highlighted as factors playing a positive role in the studied cases

Full textIn Côte d'Ivoire, the Christian workship is celebrated through music: singign, dancing, clapping of hands, choregraphy, yelling and symbolic items fom peoples' cultures. In this thesis, African cultural elements are referred to as African Rhythm and the African cultural contribution to Christianity as inculturation. This work deals with the problem resulting from the inculturation of African Rhythm and especially of its consequences over the pastoral dynamic of Christian churches in Côte d'Ivoire. These problems are due to an excessive inculturation which distorts both African spiritual reality and roman Christianity. As solution, this thesis suggests the thorough and continuous training of competent executives for the supervising of choristers and dancers, the correct and credible transcription of the musical works and some modes of introduction for the "attoungblan" talking drum into the Church on the basis of a new alphabetical language

Full textIn the Middle Ages, Clerics bearing arms, often bishops, regularly appear. Both priests and secular lords, these men fight for various reasons: to serve the king, for the cause of the Church, or even for their own interests. This is a study of these prelates and of the cultural, legal and social norms that condition their behaviour: noble and military culture, various services owed to the the king, limits brought by canon law. The chosen period begins with the Great Schism (1378) and ends at the dawn of the Lutherian Reform (1517). In France, this time is marked by the omnipresence of war, especially in the first half of the century; prelates often have to take part in these conflicts. On the other hand, the Hundred Years War induce the development of new military institutions, which tend to discharge bishops and abbots from the old feudal obligations. Prelates who engage in warfare are only rarely punished, even the most scandalous ones.At the councils, critics are expressed against them, but they lead to no conclusion. In fact, many reasons may justify the conduct of fighting bishops

Full textFirst, we wanted to reestimate the weight of the religious fact in the building of "l'esprit public" of the rural inhabitants of the Ille-et-Vilaine. So, the sudden change of population first favourable toward revolution, become more comprehensible. In fact there was a bad listening of the rurals. Revolutionnariste made confusion between a reformist spirit and a revolutionnarist one. A study of the "cahiers de doleances de la senechaussee de Rennes", has convinced us that people were generally moderate. Principally, because of the municipality’s registrars, we could look at the hiatus between political national evolutions and their assimilation in the rural spaces. The study has convinced us that "Ille-et-Vilaine", in 1789, there wasn't any fatality for acceptation or reject of the revolution. Revolutionnarists couldn't or didn't want to hear the ambiguous waitings of the ruralunhabitants, who wanted to keep liberty for religion. A big rupture was born from this reciprocal incomprehension. We have chosen to study these important points of Ille-et-Vilaine's history : the first municipal elections, the "constitution civile du clerge", the republican religions and dechristianisation under terreur and modalities of concordat, what has incited us to reduce the importance of apolitical fact only national. We get two conclusions : that religion is something about identity of the rural communities, and its high capacity to transcender the political oppositions

Full textThis analysis of the representations of Brazilianness (translation of the word « brasilidade » in Portuguese, a concept that embodies the main features of Brazilian culture and history) – from its construction in colonial Brazil (1500-1815) through to its use in the era of globalization (starting in the 1950s) – is based on forty-eight excerpts taken from eighteen Portuguese as a Foreign Language textbooks published in Brazil and the United States from 1954 to 2008: considering the authors’ process of conception, it can be noted that manualization is not only satisfied by the interruptions and continuities established between scholarly knowledge and knowledge to be taught, which would be classed as a specific case of didactic transposition (Verret 1975). These excerpts confirm the idea that their respective textbooks express certain ideologies, which include the ideology of happiness (Ellul, 1998), a characteristic frequently attributed to images of Brazil as a joyful place where singing and dancing abound (Almeida Filho, 2005)

Full textThis work tends to explain and to contribute the understanding of the position in the social hierarchy of certain ethnic groups in the United States. This explaination starts from a constat and Weberian corollary: a) that which considers the influence of ideas and religeous beleifs in the economic behavior of individuals b) that which conceives religions as ethical vehicules liable to inhibit or stimulate the process of social statification. This deals in sum to evaluate the influence of certain elements of religious culture in the makeup of certain economic behaviors and coherence capable of vitalizing or hindering group dynamisim in the social latter. This economic behaviour is notably related to: a) money and its versants, savings, expenditure, investment and the perceptions related to wealth and poverty; b) employment and c) education. Even though our study considers in particular the case of the Mexicans, this comparative study takes as primary reference the case of the Chinese and it is only as an accessory that we will refer to other groups such as American Catholics and in particular the "puritans" during the first moment of the colonization. This presupposes that the socio-economic experience of social groups, each with their own history, takes shape in the process of social stratification. This is why we privilege the socio historical comparative perspective held by the principles and analytical categories characteristic of Methodological Individualism and Rational General Theory offered by Raymond Boudon

It is realized from a social-historical and cultural viewpoint. The text is divided into eleven sections, in the first section the author draws a thoretical framework about the messianic and utopic religious practices that are shown in the praxis of the religious actors who share the postulates of the liberation theology, in the following sections the author presents the colombian context and develops a periodization of the liberation theology movement, and in each of the periods, she analyses its articulation to the popular movements. In the last sections she analyses from a micro-social viewpoint the dayto-day existence of the becs, especially that of their basic members, and the cultural and religious transitions they suffer. Finally she draws some conclusions about the future of this movement in the context of the crisis of the utopias

Full textThe Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1801-1890) is originally a set of lectures on university written in 1852 and a collection of essays and inaugural lectures published between 1854 and 1858. On the occasion of the foundation of the Catholic University of Ireland, the Catholic hierarchy invited Newman to set out his views on education. It is mainly on his defence of liberal education and theological teaching that Newman’s argument is based. The aim of this study is, on the one hand, to show how Newman connects his thought on education with his whole religious and cultural philosophy and, on the other hand, to underline how Newman’s personalist philosophy is an alternative to the liberal and utilitarian conception of education. First, our study tackles the form of Newman’s mind through the two principles which are at the basis of his thought: conscience and personal intelligence. They both reveal the spirit of connectedness Newman showed throughout his experience as an educator, as a pastor and as a theologian. Secondly, our study examines the connection between his personalist thought and his idea of a university. Newman envisages the idea of a university in the light of this principle of connectedness, and so reveals the way he conceives the organization of knowledge, the university milieu and its interpersonal relations, as well as the influence of religious teaching on intellectual and moral training. Thirdly, our study examines the relationship between the cultural approach to education and Newman’s personalist thought. By asserting that education aims at developing the person, Newman wishes to show the benefits of culture, and more precisely, that of humanities. However, the Catholic educator does not forget to underline that human culture may also come into conflict with the Christian conscience

Full textIn the eighteenth century, it was no longer necessary for the church of Scotland to assert itself in the Lowlands. However, it was not the same in the Highlands where a few Catholic strongholds remained in spite of the penal laws enacted against the roman church. At first, the state seemed to support the presbyterians in their fight against the Catholics. As a matter of fact, the Catholics' taking part in the jacobite rebellion in 1745 strengthened the state's conviction that they threatened the Hanover dynasty. Yet, in the last decades of the eighteenth century, the state withhed its support from the Presbyterians because the several wars in which Great Britain was involved and the French revolution gave the Catholics an opportunity to prove their loyalty to the state. The penal laws were gradually repealed, leaving both churches to confront each other. Dogma did not play an important part in the quarrel since the struggle between both churches had more to do with power than religion. The church of Scotland tried to extend its influence to the "popish bounds" so as to reign supreme over all Scotland. Education was the main weapon in the Presbyterians' fight against the roman church because they were convinced that its followers' ignorance was the only reason for its survival in Scotland. Therefore, if they were to be won over to the church of Scotland, the Scottish Catholics had to be instructed. That was what the SSPCK proposed to do in the beginning of the eighteenth century. Nevertheless, a century later, the level of instruction of the Highlanders, both Ccatholics and Ppresbyterians, remained lower that of the Lowlanders, and the Catholic church, far from being rooted out, was tolerated

Full textAt a time when Angola looks into the raw material resources and democracy as the opportunities for development, it is urgent to pause on the question of human resources. A true development necessarily means the promotion of the human person and its lived culture through the dialectics of life and death. Our research on "Cultural Exclusion and Salvation in Jesus Christ in the present context of Angola" takes man in his cultural and religious conditions. So, facing exclusion as a denial of the humaneness of the other and the salvation promised to all men, we propose an inclusion as a salvific force laid down by Jesus the Messiah and as announced in the Gospels, the inclusion to realise in all modes : political, social, religious and cultural. In proposing inclusion as a paradigm of salvation, we emphasize on the mission of the Church which is essentially an active witness of Jesus Christ of which the pro-existence reveals the face of inclusive love of God understood as the mercy and a total gift of life

Two surveys, made by means of questionaries, enable to discern the various representations used by catholic adults in search of sense. They bring to this investigation its primary material. An analysis relying on the contributions of human and theological sciences proposes an interpretation of the collected data. What is at stake is the possible interaction and articulations between two questions : on the one hand, how to enable these adults to acquire such a human maturity as to make them live the life of a free, responsible and reconciled man ; on the other hand, how to induce in them such processes of change and conversion as to make them live one's maturity as a believer with coherency. Questions, finalities at stake and challenges are brought to light for today's pastoral praxis. Formation, accompanying and spirituality reveal themselves as crucial elements to invest in

Full textIn this research we try to establish the relation that exists between material culture, symbols and representations used in the Jesuit missions in the Province of the Paraguay (or Paracuaria). Our objective is to understand, from the archaeological record, material transformations and changing perceptions between 1610 and 1767. Urban space organizes social realities and plays a key role in the transformation of environment and society. This materiality also reinforces actions and rituals as new practices and behaviors are introduced and reinforced over time. In this sense, the mission space acquires symbolic dimensions with specific narratives that serve to organise aspects of daily life within the mission structure. Located between the Spanish and Portuguese empires in South America, the Jesuit Province of the Paraguay founded in 1607 was the theatre of conflict for control of the territory. The first missions (Nuestra Señora de Loreto and San Ignacio Miní) were founded in 1610 in present day Brazil. In 1631, the sites were left due to attacks by the Bandeirantes or Portuguese slave holders of São Paulo that attempted to enslave populations of converted Guarani Amerindians. The missions were Jesuit enclaves in an embattled territory and were considered an obstacle to the expansion of the Portuguese crown in South American. In 1631, the missions were moved to temporary locations and then were relocated several times thereafter. These successive changes produced new interpretations of their world and society that we can observe in the material culture record. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we will outline transformations in the organization of mission space and material culture. This will give us a more complete vision of their internal organization. A historical perspective will allow us to establish the relationships between the subjects and their socio-political conditions in the mission settings. We will then see that certain objects played specific roles within defined contexts, which we must understand to establish their precise functions. Finally, we will analyze changes in the material culture from a phenomenological perspective, as this will allow us to deconstruct the narratives and ideologies that impregnates them. This exercise will allow us to establish what we believe to be the essential meaning of these objects and we will interpret their intentionality in transmitting notions of ideology and social practice.

Full textBased on a prosopographic investigation of the 480 official experts (periti) at the Second Vatican Council, this thesis revisits the history of ideas and networks of twentieth century Catholicism. By focusing on individual protagonists, their points of view, their trajectories as well as the interpersonal relationships and institutional mediations they are involved in, this research aims to reposition this event and its aftermath in the life history of the Church as determined by its historical and social conditions of production. The Catholic field is structured by a tense relation between an institutional center (comprising the government of the Church, be it local – diocesan, or global – Roman, and the teaching institutions) and a prophetic pole (the Church movements’ pioneers and the researchers). Studying the periti group, it appears that intellectual or theological stances often relate to positions held in the field. Although it does not ultimately transform the field itself, the council temporarily disrupts the ordinary process through which truth speeches are legitimized inside the institution, and alters some of the experts’ position in the field. Research into the later careers of a few of them confirm the relative readjustment of their own stands, as well as of those of the whole institution, while consolidating the positions of power of a new generation in the Church administration. As they are echoed and modified by the conciliar logic, these debates place the council in a longer Catholic history. In return, this dynamic cartography of Catholic ideas contributes to a better understanding of the place of theology in a global history of the intellectual networks, involving ideas and people

Full textThis study aims at bringing to light the links that are bound to exist between an architecture expressing a universal message and the cultural landscapes where the architecture is built. With the exemplary case of the Catholic mission in Taiwan, from the mid nineteenth century to today, the analysis of the missionary archives, combined with research on several emblematic buildings, will show the modality of the Christian adaptation to this multicultural background of an island undergoing rapid change. The resilience and the malleability specific to the architectural art provide for an original and detailed study of this constant toing and froing between the evolutive perception by the missionaries of the Formosan landscape, and the reception, itself evolutive, by this particular society of the Christian message. Gradually, this thesis immerses itself in the heart of the work of the Paris Foreign Mission Society, in the diocese of Hualien, during the nineteen fifties and sixties, grounding the major concepts in the reality of a field limited enough to make it possible to provide an exhaustive image. The aim is to prove how a place of worship can be relevant for a better understanding of cultural exchanges and the momentum of the current globalization process

Full textThe spreading of the rural chapels in Gascony and in the Basque Country which seems « static » reveals a growing takeover by the tridentine Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this phenomenon is intensified by new chapels mainly devoted to Mary. The Church adapts a pre-existing system and improves it. It reinvests the local religious culture founded on rural chapels which are deeply part of the Gascon and Basque identity. In these chapels devoted to Our Lady, pilgrimages and processions are furthered, undermining the influence of some rural chapels, some of which shelter “superstitious” and “secular” practices at the limit of the legal religion. Thus it creates a hierarchic organization which constitutes the spearhead of the tridentine reform. The faithful are guided by the brotherhoods, a devoted clergy and sometimes a religious order (convents, monasteries …). The rural chapels take over the “re-catholicization”. A wide movement of the rural populations’ cultural integration actually seems to be set up by the Tridentine Church. Finally, as a “re-catholicization” medium of the rural populations, the chapels integrate into a will to fight against Protestantism known as the Calvinism in South-Western France. Some sanctuaries create a real zone of influence delimiting the cultural area of Gascony and the Basque Country

Full textStarting from an analysis of the place of the Catholic groups in the transnational mobilization for the Spanish Republic, these pages are dedicated to the different strategies and policy of management developed in the direction of the groups of Spaniards settled in France between 1939 and 1976. Between the end of the Civil War and Franco's death, antifrancoism is far from constituting a group of homogeneous cultural groups and specificities. Following the work carried out in recent years on the cartography of the mobilization in favor of the Spanish Republic, this work analyzes solidarity practices in favor of Republican side between 1936 and 1940, as practices of a political objective emanating from different institutions. Then, in the light of a new international geopolitical situation that favors the emergence of new political labels based on two opposing systems of agreement (Western Bloc, Eastern Bloc), new criteria of identification mark the end of an institutional framework based exclusively on the political labels of the civil war. The maintenance of Franco at the head of Spain forces most groups of Spaniards, whether pro or antifranquist, to negotiate their terms of participation in the life of French society. For certain Catholic anti-Franco groups, these arrangements for negotiations with the host society necessarily imply the intervention of institutional frameworks that are no longer exclusively Spanish. If until the beginning of the sixties the Franco regime presented itself as the only defender of a Spanish culture thought to be Catholic and anti-Communist, the situation is quite different after the opening of the Second Vatican Council. For some Catholic institutions and for its trade union, apostolic or religious actors, the conversion to a Catholicism of action and / or commitment constitutes, between the beginning of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, a third way of antifrancoist expression. that allows emigrants and their families not to break with their culture of origin

Full textThis PhD thesis examines some aspects of French religious and hagiographic texts that were produced or copied in Northern Italy between the eleventh and the fifteenth century. This work is an exhaustive analysis of a large set of documents, including manuscripts, epigraphs, mosaics, bas-reliefs, accounts of journeys, chronicles, covering letters, short reports on saints’ lives, or brief prayers diffused separately, as well as of parts of dismembered books. A Remembrance by Marin Sanudo the Elder, a translation extracted from a work by the Dominican chronicler Jean de Mailly, and a fragment from the Joseph d’Arimathie en prose are among the original papers never published before. The thesis is completed by a chronology and an iconographic study of thirty-six documents

Full textIn Catholicism, the link between the protective angel and a collectivity or an individual recalls the relationship of patronage within the cult of the saints. Well-adapted to the clerical discourse of the Counter-Reformation, particularly to the Jesuit discourse on the "Final Judgment", the guardian angel has the advantage of orienting the piety of the faithful towards the central cults of Catholicism. On the borderline of the liturgy of the holy angels, one also finds a syncretic production which includes certain elements of the modern catholic conception of the guardian angel and the saint, but this is inspired also by theoretical speculations on the saints in the first centuries, on the kabbalic doctrines of the Renaissance, 19th century occultism, and modern zodiacal astrology. Far from a semiotic or theological reading, this anthropological exploration therefore analyses the different forms of devotion to the guardian angel, from the anonymous catholic guardian angel to the 72 angels in contemporary esotericism assigned to the whole of humanity, in considering also the idea of the death of close kin identified with the particular angel of the individual

Full textThis thesis describes the implementation of a new church in Geneva at the end of the 19th century within the framework of Kulturkampf (1870-1907). Connected with the Dutch, German and Swiss old-catholic movement, the catholic-christian church arised from the current breaking with the Roman Catholicism after Vatican I. Its implementation is however strictly dependent on the political and religious situation of the canton of Geneva. This Church indeed was above all liberal and national, it was supported by the political authorities, mainly of radical obedience. It becomes a tool of wrestling against the Catholicism of Pie IX, personified in Geneva by Mgr. Gaspard Mermillod. By the study of the actors of this reform, their ideas and their concrete realizations, it is not only a question of enlightening a piece underestimated by the local history (story) driving to the separation of Churches and the State (in 1907) but especially to show how individuals who consider themself as "modern" did to reform the Catholicism in a context where they have the open field and a state subsidy

Full textBetween the early 14th century and the first thirty years of the 16th century, beliefs and practices about the Virgin Mary in Sweden undergo an evolution which, while increasing the integration of the country into European space, also singularizes it by its characteristics. For example, the influence of Saint Bridget of Sweden is considerable. As mystic and a particularly zealous devotee of the Mother of God, Bridget founded in Vadstena a monastery and a religious order whose influence is crucial on Swedish spirituality. Using primary sources produced by Bridget and her spiritual heirs, as well as those concerning the worship of the Virgin Mary in a more general perspective, this dissertation aims at documenting the major influence of Bridgettine spirituality on the religiosity of the Swedes at the end of the Middle Ages. The specificity of the Swedish Marian cult are studied on different scales: from the monastery of Vadstena to the dioceses, thanks to liturgical sources. The modalities of diffusion of Marian celebrations are studied as well as the transmission of dogmatic contents. If the methodology used in this dissertation is mainly the one of the historian, it does not rule out a temporary use of tools developped by other discipline, and especially Cognitive Sciences

Full textThis work is an ethnography of the contemporary practices of votive writing within catholic places of worship of the Parisian diocese. The votive writing is understood here as an act which aim is the address to the divine beings (God, the Virgin Mary, the saints). This study is mainly pragmatic and fits into an anthropology of writing careful to texts and their materialism, their situation and to organizational layout prevailing in their manufacturing, their usage their preservation. The problem is related to the efficiency of writing within a religious frame. The investigation takes in parochial churches, places of pilgrimage and a chapel of an airport. It describes the votive activity, its preparation and fulfilment, taking into account resources and constraints. It investigates the daily administration of these writings and the work realized by reception teams of the various places of worship to control and promote these practices. This analysis highlights the diversity of the intercession procedure and questions inferred delegation activities

Full textThe purpose of this research is to analyze the "dichotomy" whose many African faithful are subjected in their Christian practices. In fact, they are divided between, on one hand, a strong and sincere commitment to Catholic Church with its principles, and on the other hand, an appeal to traditional African cultures and ritual practices to solve their daily life problems. A survey of the history of the laity in the Betiland provides us the framework on which we build our analysis. Our investigation reveals a hermeneutical problem. In dealing with the problem of ‘dichotomy’ in the Betiland, two periods are to be acknowledged: the Missionary Period (until 1960) and Post Missionary Period (until today). Because of these two periods, there is a need of re-assessing an historical reading of the problem. This reading leads us inevitably to hermeneutical shifts in assessing the reasons of the malaise whom the African layman is confronted in his Christian practice. As a matter of fact, our discovery is that the challenges of a modern and even post-modern society are not only conflicts between traditions and Western Christian culture. There are results of a more fundamental crisis: the crisis of secular world. From this standpoint, the word ‘dichotomy’ becomes more than the expression of a solely post-modern malaise. It becomes a word that expresses the main challenge of today’s secular world in search of the adaptation of faith in modern society as this society faces multi breakdowns; thus our interest of evaluating its use on pastoral field and its relevance in terms of a "pastoral care of the signs of the times"

The analysis of the numerous failures, expressed by a chronic absenteeism, a lack of implication and the poor standard of the students' level enabled me to identify the problem : a global discrepancy between the institute's objectives on one hand, the students' expectations and potentialities and the means given on the other hand.
