Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of this article is to pay tribute to Marielle Franco, a Brazilian LGBTQ+ Black activist from the favela who was brutally executed in March 14, 2018. Taking Marielle’s life and death as a case study, I will demonstrate how she embodied Black feminist theory and practice and how her execution can be better addressed by situating it within the context of spatialities of race and the necropolitical governance of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Sisyphus Outdone (2012), Nathanaël’s particular tribute to Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), the reader faces a challenging hybrid text in which the verbal and visual dimensions intermingle to produce an idiosyncratic type of narrative. Fragmentary, elliptical, a web of quotations, dictums, and meditations on the difficult condition of the individual in the current image-saturated scenario of the first decades of the 21st century, the text manages to propose a rigorous reflection upon crucial aspects of representation from History and temporality, to the Subject now, photography, catastrophe theory, architecture, failure and translation, among the most salient. Sisyphus, I suggest, exhibits a strategic photopoetics which operates as a self-reflective mechanism contributing to the persistence of an impermanent liminal subject and to the (re)production of textuality and the proliferation of voices against silence.

Abstract:
Girish Karnad is a writer, dramatist, director and actor par excellence. He belongs to a generation that has produced Dharamveer Bharati, Mohan Rakesh and Vijay Tendulkar who have created a national theatre for modern India, which is the legacy of his generation. Jnanpitha Awardee, Karnad is the author of many well known plays in Kannada and English. He has represented Indian art and culture in foreign lands. Girish Karnad was a conscious writer, who had keenly observed cultural and political upheavals in India and brings in a new equation in his plays. In this paper, I propose to analyze the selected plays of Indian playwright Grirish Karnad who has experimented with the fusion of the traditional and the modern dramatic forms and content. Karnad is most famous as a playwright and his plays have become a byword for imagination, innovation and craftsmanship. In the subsequent years, Karnad continued to post script narratives, interpreting for us histories and myths, forging an idiom of writing that was tethered to both the past and present. Karnad's practice of drawing source from myths and tales lends the play an immediacy of appeal. This paper thus studies Karnad's selected plays from the point of view of themes and techniques. While doing so, the focus will mainly be on the history and myth in his dramatic works-Karnad's journey from his first drama 'Yayati holds a mirror to the very evolution of a truly 'Indian theatre.'

Abstract:
This introductory paper traces a general perspective of the nowadays Chicanx/Latinx stateof the question, including articles, notes, creative poems and drawings, and a tribute inmemoriam Rudolfo A. Anaya (1937-2020). Challenging canons, norms and genres seemsto be particularly appropriate when tackling ideology from the polychromatic gaze oftranscultural minorities in the US. As such, Chicanx/Latinx literary and artistic expressionsact as catalysts of renovation and change, not only in terms of content but also playing withforms in a freer, experimental way. Transgressing what is considered “normal” seems to bethe only way to cope with fringes and frames, and thus a contemporary redefinition of theworld is reached to highlight the “real” truth of artistic normativity.

Abstract:
This study aims to answer the questions: What is is culture of tribute and how is it expressed amongst female performance artists in social media today? How can culture of tribute be understood in sociological terms? A total of 119 Instagram posts from 46 creators have been analysed. The posts were collected by chain sampling and processed by framing analysis, to visualize how culture of tribute has been portrayed. This study applies theories of inclusion, homosociality, capital and reputation-based cooperation and describes culture of tribute as the framing of the chief character's process, the framing of the consignor's position, the framing of the relationship them between and the political and social project of which the art is  part of. Together, these describe the social phenomenon 'culture of tribute'. The results show culture of tribute as a cooperation aiming to upgrade own experiences and challenge the relationship between the own artistic work and mainstream, culture of tribute is a negotiation of capital with social visibility, power and control over resources as a goal. It is the strategy of cooperating women and a protest against the notion of the autonomous male genius.

This study salvages Patrícia Galvão s participation in cultural journalism in the city of Santos, between 1954 and 1961, from a sociologic-historical perspective. From the study of her intellectual trajectory, it was possible to identify, through a qualitative analysis of the column Literature, produced by the journalist between 1957 and 1961 for the newspaper A Tribuna, the defining characteristics of her production in four decades of dedication to the press: the constant search for reporting the vanguard , the didactic preoccupation, the intellectual autonomy, the defense of literature as a form of social emancipation and the dialogue with local, Brazilian and foreign intellectuals and writers. This study has situated Patricia Galvão in a generation which contributed to modernize the discussion of ideas and the very language of the magazines and periodicals in which they participated. The production of these intellectuals stressed the role of newspapers as an instrument of analysis and criticism in face of the discussions on culture and society, which allows the understanding of the press as a territory of conflicts which shelters different symbolic productions.

Abstract:
An element that has characterized democratic countries is institutional distrust. Survey research data conducted globally show that the citizens are growingly distrustful of political institutions and politicians. Such behavior is justified based upon corruption, citizen’s apathy and government’s failure in providing public policies design to meet the needs of the citizens. However, the discredit in politics and political institutions are not only explained by those factors but also on how taxes influence the daily life of citizens. As the impact of taxes in the population’s behavior has rarely been studied in Latin America, this dissertation analyzes porto alegrenses’ perceptions about tax payment’s and its influence in their political trust. We basically examine how the relationship between these two dimensions contribute, or not, to the maintenance of the Social Contract. In order to answer this question a survey research was conducted in Porto Alegre/RS, in 2003. An index of perception of tax payment was constructed and then crossed with institutional trust. The results indicate porto-alegrenses demonstrate and support the Social Contract. However, this trust is negatively influenced by the perception of excessive tax payments.

Abstract:
Located in the heart of Lower Manhattan, the 9/11 Tribute Center is a small memorial museum that commemorates the attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath. Tribute’s five small galleries house numerous exhibits and artifacts; however, this museum is most widely recognized for its daily walking tours, which are led by individuals who hold direct connections to the attacks. These docents—who include survivors, first responders, rescue and recovery workers, local residents, and family members of the deceased—share historical information, statistics, and their own stories as they lead visitors around the new World Trade Center site. Drawing from four years of ethnographic research and interviews at this memorial museum, my dissertation argues that Tribute has been a site of profound meaning making for many individuals struggling to gain purchase on an event that shattered their lives. I employ an existential and phenomenological approach to show how everyday acts of memorialization, storytelling, and walking have allowed individuals to cultivate a sense of agency and restore intersubjective bonds. Case studies also illuminate the complex interplay between personal memory and collective memory at this site as docents attempt to navigate the space between private and public realms. In analyzing the continual negotiation of memory and discourse, I reveal how tensions can inhere when individual and official framings of the past diverge. Particular attention is given to the ambiguous place of religious narratives, histories, and interpretations of the past at Tribute, an institution that strives to remain religiously and politically neutral. I analyze the reasons why Tribute’s leaders have attempted to prohibit conversations about religion from their site while also pointing to some of the consequences—both individual and social—of their framing. Ultimately, this dissertation makes two important contributions to the field of Religious Studies. First, this work moves beyond conventional frames of reference to analyze the manifold resources (whether conventionally called “religious” or not) upon which humans draw to reconstruct viable lives in the wake of a trauma. And, second, it examines how institutional ideas about religion can shape exhibits, tours, and larger public perceptions of an event.

Abstract:
A way to understand the Sao Paulo history is analyzing the books present in paulistano\'s homes in the second half of the twentieth century. How their presence can reveal aspects of structure and superstructure by that time as well as indicate changes? How those books have influenced these changes? Based on Lucien Febvre propositions, the intention is to answer these questions in this research. Sao Paulo of the beginning of nineteeth century had nothing to do with the city it became in the end of this same century. The difficult book circulation in Brazil found in the establishment of Law School a breeding ground to its expansion. Yet the book universe took long to put down roots and restrained itself to a small group of readers as it happened to the institution where it grew. Even so the book universe played an important role when the growing coffee economy put the city of Sao Paulo in a new position in national and international level. The analysis of books present in the post-mortem inventories and the debates about legal culture, mainly about natural rights, reflect these processes and help understand better the dynamic of changes lived in the paulista capital in the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
This work presents the formation of a political culture in the Peruvian context of the 20th century from an analysis of a significant part of the national press. The different approaches used by the most important political segments, the Peruvian oligarchy and the Partido Aprista Peruano, contributed decisively to widespread values, concepts and radical, authoritarian and even violent political practices through the main press, respectively the newspapers El Comercio and La Tribuna. Both were co-responsible for the frequent imposition of anomalous regimes such as military and civil dictatorships. Narrowing the scope of the research to the periods in which freedom of speech enabled the legal co-existence of both newspapers, especially between 1931/1932 and 1945/1948, it is possible to compare the content published to understand the establishment of these two political agents, their importance in the national political behavior as well as the unfolding of their political influences later on in history.

Abstract:
The Muduvar are a small group of former shifting cultivators in the south indian Cardamom Hills. As very few studies were dedicated to them until now even though they are depository of an autochtonous cultural heritage with singular features, this dissertation aims to unravel it further. Its development opens with a contextual study which focuses on a muduvar village. Then it goes on in the direction of historical time, widening its scope in order to include Muduvar's traditional neighbors and study their common political traditions and transformations under the colonial rule. Finally, it comes back to the muduvar autochthonous heritage considered as a "cultural matrix" for its cohesiveness, dealing in particular with its original kinship system. This monograph claims to be a new endeavor in thinking the so called tribal societies' degree of autonomy in the South Indian culture

Abstract:
The thesis aims at studying Transjordan, its Arab Christian and Muslim tribes, and its spatial-ecological units in which different socio-political dynamics took place. The thesis analyzes different transition stages, from tribes to state and from tribe to community, in which political and social spaces have been reconfigured according to power logics, which were old and new at the same time. The objective is to identify a historical journey that deals with the reality of local Christianity, the characteristics of its political micro-cosmos and the birth of the Hashemite Emirate of Transjordan. This would be done by looking at the micro-history of the Transjordanian districts during the nineteenth century, the Great War and the British Mandate.

Abstract:
This dissertation project discusses individual photographs of the Brighton Seminole Tribe of Florida from the early 1900s to the current period, each organized by way of their institutional significance, not their place in chronological history. Following Jean Mohr and John Berger's model in Another Way of Telling, I create a narrative for the pictures with a discussion of historical information, current data from interviews, Tribal members' stories, and my own personal story as it is tethered to the tribe. The research addresses the following questions: Can photography offer a technological means to communicate culture in a vital, organic way? Can photos communicate culture as identity and not something merely to identify with? Can this cultural identification include me, an outsider, and is it possible that a colonialist viewpoint is actually beneficial to the tribe? John Berger, Roland Barthes, and Gregory Ulmer's theories allow opportunity for new perspectives, and even would-be answers at times. Admittedly, there is no frame large enough to hold all of the truth, but these theorists' works push the frame's boundaries to look at the pictures from other perspectives, other as both different and from the outside. These critics offer light and air, posing questions such as, what assumptions help a viewer transcend the normally limited perspective of a superficial observer? What possible contributions might an outsider bring to the interpretation?

Abstract:
This book is a tribute to Giovanna Brogi Bercoff, Full Professor of History of Russian at the State University of Milan and a leading authority on Polish studies, mediaeval Russian literature and Ukrainian studies, both in Italy and abroad. Former Chairman of the Associazione Italiana degli Slavisti, she contributed to project Italian Slavic studies into an international dimension. Among the most significant aspects of her intense academic and teaching career we should mention the pioneering studies on historiography and the Baroque culture in the Slavic area, as well as the introduction of Ukrainian studies at the University of Milan. The authors of the essays collected here, which range from linguistics to philology, and from literary theory to history, are Italian and foreign scholars of different generations and different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:
Language and cultural shifts are the major causes of endangerment of any community, which begins from minor switching of practices and verbal repertoires and ends with a whole change of community, and finally culminates in the community losing its own identity. Language shift usually takes place in a bilingual or multilingual speech community. It is a social phenomenon, whereby one language replaces another in a given society due to underlying changes in the composition and aspirations of the society. This process transitions from speaking the old to the new language. This is not fully a structural change caused by the dynamics of the old language as a system. The new language is adopted as a result of contact with another language community. The term language shift excludes language change which can be seen as an evolution, and hence the transition from older to newer forms of the same language. Contact between two or more cultures often leads to different sociological processes such as acculturation, cultural change, cultural genocide, and cultural shift. Cultural shift occurs when a community gives up its own socio-cultural practices like customs, rituals and traditional beliefs, and is characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems. It differs from the process of cultural change in which a community’s culture can evolve independently. Shifts may take place at the level of an individual speaker who gradually forgets or shifts to another language and consequently this language spreads to an entire community. This phenomenon can be seen among the Aranadans, a primitive tribal community found mainly in the Malappuram district and in other Northern districts such as Kasargode and Kannur of Kerala, owing to their irreverence towards the preservation of their own language and culture. The socio-ecological, psychological and educational factors impact their language and cultural shifts. This paper illustrates and clarifies the reasons for the language and cultural shifts of the Aranadan tribal community.

Abstract:
The Brazilian police killed 16 people per day in 2017 and 3/4 of the victims were black people. Recently, a Brazilian called Evaldo Rosa dos Santos, father, worker, musician, and black, was killed in Rio de Janeiro with 80 rifle bullets shot by the police. Everyday, the statistics and the news show that the police uses more force when dealing with black people and it seems obvious that, in Brazil, the state bullet uses to find a black skin to rest. Unfortunately, the brutal force and violence by the state and the police to black people is not a problem only in this country. It is a global reality that led to the creation of an international movement called Black Lives Matter (BLM), a movement against all types of racism towards the black people specially by the police and the state. The BLM movement also aims to connect black people of the entire world against the violence and for justice. In our work, we try to establish a link between the reality of black people in Brazil with the culture of black people around the world, connecting people and artists to perform a tribute to the black lives harved by the state force. For this, the piece uses web content, news, pictures, YouTube’s videos, and more, to create a collage of visual and musical environment merged with expressive movements of a dance, combining technology and gestures. Black culture beyond violence because we believe that black lives matter. such as the Ku Klux Klan, which bring the black population of the world into concern for possible setbacks in their rights. In Brazil, it is not different. Brazil is the non African country with the biggest afro descendant population in the world and one of the last country in the world to abolish slavery. Nowadays, a black person is 3 times more propense to be killed and most part of the murders in the country happened to afro Brazilians. Marielle Franco, a black city councillor from Rio, the only black female representative and one of seven women on the 51-seat council was killed in 2018. The killers were two former policeman. According to Human Rights Watch, the police force in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killed more than 8,000 people between 2005 and 2015, 3/4 of them were black men. At the same time, the African culture strongly influenced the Brazilian culture and most part of the traditional Brazilian music and rhythms can be considered black music.

Abstract:
We examine how accurately the belief system or cultural concepts of Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, is reconstructed in the virtual world of the Internet. Nine Maori web sites were searched using a list of 44 key concepts in Maori culture. We registered how many pages within a particular web site contain each of the key concepts. These numbers were set up in a data matrix for further statistical analysis. The Multidimensional Scaling method was used to construct a spatial representation of Maori web sites in the space generated by the key concepts in Maori culture. Using the correlation coefficients between derived dimensions and the key concepts we interpreted three dimensions as General Cultural, Intra-tribe Dynamics and Educational. The position of each Maori web site in this space has been located and described.
