Camus, Jérémy. "Henri Barbusse et la culture religieuse." Thesis, Nantes, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016NANT2017/document.
Full textSince his childhood, Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) feels deep inside him the necessity of the spirituality. This feeling leads him to pursue, through his work, the quest for an alternative to a missing God. At the end of the XIXth century, the author expresses his refusal of any transcendence by claiming the sacredness of his heart, which represents to him the source of the infinite. His first writings indicate his willingness to forge an immanent religion, a religion of the heart. Then his life as a soldier during the First World War leads him to a political realisation, no less spiritual because it awakens in him a new faith. Through this realisation, he exceeds its pre-war individualism to guide its reflection toward the collective. So the First World War does not break with his previous literary work, but rather represents a change in perspective, even an achievement. His adherence to the French Communist Party in 1923 reflects the religious fervour he felts with regard to the Russian revolution, and enables us to understand that the Marxist doctrine embodies the completion of his quest for an alternative to God. From there, our work aims to study how Barbusse considers the religious culture, in order to show that this particular aspect of his intellectual progression reveals the profound continuity that characterizes his literary work. Both actor and witness of a time marked by contradictions of modernity, Barbusse never stopped to affirm his willingness to express the spiritual aspirations of his generation

Full textIn contrast to the dogmatic affirmation, religious experience leads us continually to another religious experiences: religious experience resorts to utopianism in itself. Religious experience as the human experience of the divine is experience of the infinite by the finite: religious experience is romantic in itself. Religious experience claims to grasp immediately the deepness of the divinity: religious experience is essentially intuitive and mystic. Now, the modernity shows us in the end of its development the crisis caused by its formal rationalism. The moment of criticism, which is preserved by the modernity, is absolutely not auto-critical. It is in the deepness of the religious experience that we can discover the true auto-criticism. By that, we could believe that religious experience is the counterpart of compensation to the self-sufficient rationalization and criticism of the modernity. The phenomenology of Husserl shows us how the objectivity and intelligibility of the religious experience come to be possible. The romanticism of Schelling brings us to solve the problem caused by the rationalism of the enlightenment. By the romanticism and the phenomenology, we can overcome the crises of the rationalism and the modernity. Paul Tillich’s dependence on Schelling is vital for Paul Tillich’s ontology. Paul Tillich has clearly revealed in his theology of culture the essential relations between religion and culture, between substance and form, between theonomy and autonomy, between modus and mos. Inspired by Paul Tillich, i think that the Christian church should avoid the “ideologic faith” which is also refused by the genuine faith related to the deepness of human interiority. The Christian church must animate the secular society and culture without disregarding their autonomies. The Christian church must consider simultaneously the two different aspects of the religious symbol : the cultural situation and the existential situation. The Christian church must participate in the deepness of the universal history without refusing the dialogues with the defeated, the marginalized and the future generations

Full textThe Haitian voodoo presents a profusion of practices and perceptible representations, symbolic ones, as material as corporeal. He influences the arts and the literature of a whole culture, well beyond the circle of his followers. If it is plural from origin, it was also collected and represented in a multiple way by his outer observers. Forged during a tempestuous history and present, its representation system seems to present a character at the same time persistent and permeable, connected to the faith itself. Through the analysis of worship images, a cinematic exploration conducted within a religious community of Port-au-Prince, and finally through a participatory experience of confrontation of the recorded images with the agents and film construction according to three different modalities, the study attempts to question the representation system of the followers and the relationship which it maintains with the faith. The research also tries to examine restitutions forms and specific visual anthropology tools applied to the study of symbolic representation systems and their dynamics
Yoo, Junghwan. "Culture et politique en Corée : pour une approche culturaliste." Paris 8, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA080967.
Full textIn an attempt to clarify the particularity of politics in korean culture, this study adopts a culturalist approach in its semiotic version. Having identified some components of the korean system of signification and having compared it with other systems such a s christianism and islam, we are entitled to assume that the complementarity principle be the essence of korean cultural code. Resulting from this complementarity principle, phenomena of imbrication between the ethical and the political and searching for a harmony between them are constantly observed in different dimensions of the political action and institutions in korea

Full textBetween 1820 and 1870, the State and the French cities are implementing - using a great budget - a massive order to fill the churches with monumental sculptures to serve a liturgical and educational purpose. The first part of this study examines the synoptic approach to religious sculpture of the nineteenth century, through the major programs. This leads to an overall view of a chronological evolution complicated by changes in expectations and ambitions and therefore to be aware of the status of cultural frontispieces that churches had acquired trough sculpture. This study also shows the prominent places that Christ and the Virgin generally occupy within these carved sets. The liturgical space initiated by the Restauration inherits expiatory dimension from the Revolution and the Empire. This pain mixed with hope and faith guided the execution of the Virgin and Child, crucified Christs and Pieta, giving them a decisive liturgical function. The period finally knows, in terms of hagiographic representation, a surprising abundance. The third part examines the numerous representations of the saints as a mean used by the restoration of religion to foster an intercessional relationship that has always been strong in France. Hence, a triple dialogue is highlighted: one between artists in time, one between subjects in the theological and theocratic imaginary, and one between forms in the overlaps - sometimes surprising - of stylistic genealogies
Taghavi, Shiva. "When Your Culture Advocates You : the Effect of Cultural Work Values on Performance." Thesis, Jouy-en Josas, HEC, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHEC0004/document.
Full textCultural values and their impact on people’s attitudes and behavior have long been a place for debate. Globalization, migration and expatriation have contributed to the conflict caused by the interaction among multiple cultural identities, particularly when it comes to organizations with diverse workforce. Specifically, France is a unique case that provides a historically and culturally rich, yet very ambiguous context for studying this topic. The dominant culture in France emphasizes on egalitarianism and secularism. However, a great part of the population has adopted distinct cultural values with regard to their religious beliefs. Moreover, the perception about ‘equal opportunities’ provided by the society varies considerably across the cultures. The topic is specifically important at workplace, where individuals with diverse and sometimes divergent beliefs take part in collective activities. The objective of this dissertation is to discover the mechanisms by which cultural attributes predict work ethic and productivity- first, through their interaction with religious beliefs; and second through the implicit theories about the societal structure. The findings reveal that religious thoughts positively influence work ethic and level effort when a culture of religiosity is prominent and negatively when the laïc culture is salient. Furthermore, this research sheds light to the different perceptions about equal opportunities in the society. The meritocratic attitudes are directly influenced by the extent to which people perceive the social structure to be malleable vs. fixed. Across three essays, this dissertation addresses a particularly important issue as faced by employers and policy makers, specifically in France. It provides a compelling understanding about a number of antecedents of work ethic and work behavior; namely, the cultural and religious values, perceptions about malleability of the social structure, and mindsets

Full textIn this work I aim at understanding the broad consensus on the topos of “the loss of religious knowledge among French teenagers”. The research begins with an historical study on this topos. Then, I discuss the issue of the modality of construction, among French and German teenagers, of a "stock of knowledge" about religion. Thanks to a qualitative and quantitative study conducted by means of phenomenological oriented sociology, I have studied the individual knowledge on five different religions : Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism. This research brings to light that informal knowledge (medium, peers group) plays a more effective role than formal knowledge (school, family) in the teenagers contructed ideas about religion, and that this phenomenon works for French teenagers as well as for the Germans. Further, this work reveals the importance of a situation of religious plurality for the acquisition of knowledge about religion. Lastly, I have tried to understand the phenomenon of exculturation (the dissociation of the French and German mainstream culture from Christianity) with the help of the concept of popularization (dissolution of the boundaries between religiously marked and unmarked communication)
Stewart, Bradley. "Le Voisinage : une communauté intentionnelle missionnaire dans une culture post-chrétienne." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/70301.
Full textSocial and economic changes in recent decades have radically transformed the realities of young adult life. These changes led the student ministry Power to Change at Université Laval to reevaluate its context and its methods in order to better reach Québécois students. The result of these reflections was to found an intentional community (called Le Voisinage, or “The Neighbourhood”) in a student quarter of Quebec City, where Christian young adults decided to move together, integrating life, faith, and mission in their milieu. This study seeks to lay a missiological foundation for this community via a deep investigation of its context and by putting the community in dialogue with a movement of evangelical intentional communities, The New Monasticism. The contextual part of this study asks two questions: in what context was Power to Change founded, and in what ways did this context lead to methods and ways of thinking thinking that are either no longer pertinent, or even distortions of the Christian mission? We argue that a ministry dedicated exclusively to evangelism and discipleship is only relevant in a highly christianized context, and that the Church Growth Theology that we have inherited is patterned after the imaginary of consumer society. As a result, this missiology engages in the dynamics of consumerism and proves harmful both for young adults and for the Church. We finish by evaluating how neo-monastic missiology, based on the idea of the Church as a community of witness, and its expanded perspective of the Kingdom of God can balance a missiology centered on evangelism and individual salvation. A balanced missiology and a balanced practice can thus help the community Le Voisinage better serve students who are facing the pressures of consumer society.

Full textThe culture, in so collective identity, is a historical production : it transforms itself continually in the time and the space in function of interest of the moment. The formers appear often by political conflicts that change without ceasing the field of the social. Thus, the culture is a practices and representation reservoir that social actors use so as to renegociate their identity ; of this fact, a society is called constantly to redefine itself to exist. If modes of schooling are cultural ideology vehicles, they derive of a historical production and have consequently to follow the evolution of this last one, is-to-tell to transform themselves. To niger and especially in the country hawsa, modes national and islamic educations are stemming distinct historical productions and are object of a perpetual renegociation by social actors, what translated into policies of education on the part of the state and supranational authorities (fund monetary international, world bank, organization of the islamic conference, etc. ) and by educative strategies and private initiatives to the level of the population. Thus, if the coranic school continues to develop itself in a favorable middle to the national school (maradi, commercial capital of niger), is not only because it results from the historical production an islamic religious culture, but also because it obeys an internal dynamics of changing of its teaching and its pedagogy. We show how there has been production an islamic religious culture in country hawsa in general and to maradi especially, and development of modes of informal schooling resulting this culture to maradi

Full textSince the 1990s, France has been a number of social phenomena rooted in the realms of philosophy, “psychological culture” and spirituality. These phenomena have sought to satisfy an individualistic “quest for meaning” which clearly lies outside the classical religious paradigm. We have identified that these different phenomena foster a nexus (a nebula) defined as being of “psycho-philo-spiritual” nature. The discourses and works of those taking part, including philosophers (such as A. Comte-Sponville, L. Ferry, R. Pol-Droit, M. Onfray), magazines (Actualités des religions, Psychologies magazine), and spiritual organizations (the “Forum 104”, the “Ashram” of A. Desjardins, the “Centre Dürckheim”) reach a vast and cultivated public. Their different constructions of meanings allow us to measure the effect of a secularization that has become radicalized, most notably via the “disenchantment of secular institutions” (J. Baubérot, 2004). Thus this research reveals the creation of new beliefs fostered by non-religious phenomena (“practical” philosophy and psychology) which participate in the decomposition of religion in terms of comprehensive resources, into an imminent enterprise which is within reach of the general public. The psycho-philo-spiritual nexus reveals a double process with, on the one hand the affirmation of values produced by an individualist culture causing the collapse of the big symbolical systems and on the other hand, a certain homogenization of the construction of meanings – operating specifically via a generalization of a psychological lens making sense of the world and existence
Sehirli, Nasir Merve. "L'influence de la culture catholique sur les œuvres d'Alfred Hitchcock et de Pedro Almodóvar." Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSE3011.
Full textThe notion of habitus represents a complex and stable whole that profoundly influences acts, attitudes, judgements and works. The objective of our research is to clarify the effects of the Catholic habitus in the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Pedro Almodóvar, two film directors who are from different periods and cultures, but who were born and raised in practicing Catholic families and who have had an education characterized as strictly religious. Iconology or the science of images presupposes that the creation of a work of art depends on several factors that combine both the family and school education of its creator as well as his social class and the conditions of the time when the creation is realized. In this context, we use the three-step analysis method (Pre-Iconographic-Iconographic-Iconographic-Iconological Analysis) developed by Panofsky that effectively shows the correlation between creation and the creator's world view (Weltanschauung). This vision manipulates artistic choices and interests (Kunstwollen). In the first part of our thesis, we define the notion of habitus and analyse the biographies of the artists. The second part deals with the analysis of the omnipresent themes belonging to the Catholic religion. We finalize our thesis by analysing three films by each of the two directors based on Catholic themes to understand the intentions of the filmmakers in creating their works (Hitchcock's Vertigo, The Wrong Man, Marnie and Almodóvar's Matador, Carne Tremula, Julieta) as well as their voluntary and instinctive choices
Martignoni, Andrea. "Mots et gestes de la foi : une anthropologie religieuse du Frioul à la fin du Moyen Age." Paris 4, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA040006.
Full textA patriarchal state since the beginning of the 11 century, Friuli was entirely incorporated within the Venetian Terraferma in 1420. This distinctive group of cities, which is constituted by the capital, Udine, Cividale and Gemona, represents an advantageous standpoint from which to study the different forms of religious faith at the end of the Middle Ages. This research which is based on the language of words and the gestures of faith, endeavours to study religious practice, devotional organisation and the different expressions of belief at the time. The frontiers which exist between what is sacred and what is profane are extremely porous in medieval cities. Urban authorities fully contribute to the implementation of a city of God on earth, by keeping a close watch over space and time. This distinctive « politics of the sacred » also implies that the signs of divine immanence are made visible in the city, which is thus transformed into a city of images and a city of relics. A new sacral geography which supervises religious practice, emerges in the urban fabric. Because of the important role played by religious brotherhoods, the city is witness to multiple experimentations of devotional language. Through ritualities of the body and of the soul, man gets involved in a dialogue which is both vertical, with the divine, and horizontal, with his neighbour. But the city of God also falls prey to different threats which put its security at risk. Inside the city, forms of blasphemy and iconoclasm may considerably disturb the established, the divine and the public orders. Outside the city, the plague and the Turks, whose incursions terrorize populations in the 15 century, are thought to be the fruit of divine wrath. Spiritual strategies are therefore designed to restore the fragile alliance with God and implore his mercy. The Homo Religiosus at the end of the Middle Ages is characterized by a prodigious « crave for the divine »
Paris 7, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA070034.
Full textFollowing the arguments of the cognitive anthropology, especially the theoretical proposal of Dan Sperber on the transmission of the beliefs and religious practices by means of contagion, I analyze the diverse beliefs and religious practices of the natives pima located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in northwestern Mexico. The case that I take as an example is that of the supernatural beings called oiskama; they are beings similar to the human but with the body of a serpent. According to the pima, they are the ones that maintain "alive" the small "water eyes" called cienegas, which are imagined as the entrance to the "down world"; a space similar to that in which pimas live. In spite of the danger that these supernatural beings represent, causing the "scare" disease, both the cienegas and the oiskama are well respected and sometimes venerated due to the believe that thanks to them the rain falls down every year onto the crops of corn and bean, basics sustain of the pima. The transmission of these beliefs relays on the way the human mind processes this kind of information, for this is a type of knowledge that, even though is accepted and considered true, it is not totally understood. It means that, the group of beliefs in supernatural beings related to the cienegas are "half understood ideas" and because they enclosure mystery, turn out to be evocative and memorable

Full textAdopting the methods and approaches of sociology of religion, this study examines organisational forms of convert Buddhism and the religiosity of persons in their places of religious practice in France and in the Czech Republic in the context of consumer culture. Our focus is on the cultural aspects of this form of society, with lifestyle as its cultural model and its emphasis on identity construction.Fieldwork data are used to analyse the distinctive Buddhist lifestyle of middle-class city-dwellers. This lifestyle relies on organisational structures and is composed of several dimensions (practices, representations, values). This study seeks to show how these dimensions conform to expressions of consumer culture, despite practitioners’ preference for an alternative conception of their lifestyle. Moreover, we suggest viewing this organised lifestyle as an example of reshaping and of individualisation of contemporary religion

Full textAlthough he is not really recognized by his contemporaries and still largely unknown today, the Algerian intellectual Malek Bennabi (1905-1973) nevertheless made a remarkable entry into the intellectual life in Algeria with his notion of "colonisabilité ". Then, he will be known in the Muslim world with its functional definitions of culture and civilization. Thus, his reformist conception of religion, having a social function, which he called "religious idea", was ignored. It is, however, the keystone of the understanding of Bennabi's thinking. For him, "The religious idea" must be an idea lived as a "working truth", being authentic with Islam and effective in the modern world. He mixes the knowledge of the Muslim Tradition with the human sciences and proposes to connect his vision of an authentic Islam with the Cartesian technical spirit. Moreover, in a context of decolonization, Bennabi wants to realize, by the moral and social deployment of the "religious idea", a project of sustainable society, which he sees as being prosperous and open to human civilization. Through this concept of "religious idea" we propose, first of all, to question the place of Bennabi in the history of Algeria but also of contemporary Islam. Then, we want to question the foundations and the purposes of his thought which is singular in Muslim reformism. Finally, this will allow us to measure the impact of the "religious idea" in its project of society on three levels of reflection: man, society, humanity

Full textThe work, including ten chapters based on the analysis of ecclesiastical and notarial archives proves that the toledo cathedral was the chief musical focus of the musical life along the sixteenth century. Il discusses about polyphonist singers : how to find them out, to examinate and admit them, what are their duties their obliged presence during liturgical services, how they take part to religious feasts out of the cathedral, what is the choir master's role from the end of the middle ages to the end of the sixteenth century with biography of the different choir masters which followed one another, excepted morales and torrentes. The author speaks also about cathedral, parrish church and convent organists, then about instrumentalists of the cathedral, "ministriles altos" but also independant "ministriles" and "tanedores", gathered in companies and playing during religious feasts. Then, he studies the polyphonic repertory preserved in choir books of the cathedral and classifies it along the liturgical year. He examines then how these choirbooks were made or purchased with a lot of precisions about the costs. The ghree last chapters discuses about polyphonic music during exceptional feasts such as births of sovereigns in the imperial city, musical practice, stringed instruments makers. At the end, musical transcriptions of unpublished works can be found

Full textTranscription, translation and commentary of the "book of living through eternity", counting among the rich field of late egyptian religious literature. 19 versions of this text have been found, of various length and importance: 16 hieratic papyri, 2 stelae, 1 sarcophagus. Except for 4 of them, all are coming from thebes. These documents, generally dating from the roman period, bear the name of individual whom they accompany in the tomb. The themes are typical of the contemporary funerary texts, especially the book of breathing. One finds also, particularly in the iconography, borrowings from the book of the dead. The original part of the "book of living through eternity", a developed catalogue of feasts and rituals to which the dead is associated from the beginning to the end of the year, and whose scheme is unparalleled. Among other things, one finds a description of the rituals of lower and middle egypt pertaining to the osirian mysteries in the month of khoiak. But the main characteristic of the text is above all the calenderical purpose in which this catalogue of festivals was conceived; it is based on cycles thanks to which the dead, through the various months of the year, is sure to gain a perpetual renewal. Through that way, he lives through eternity and finally arrives, as we can see out of the properly funeral part of the book, near osiris defined as the master of eternity

Full textThis work is divided into parts. The first part is the archaeological inventory, as complete as possible, of the ancient egyptian columns. 450 architectural documents are produced and analysed. The egyptian columns can be classified into two groups : pillars, cylindric, polygonal columns and columns in the shape of a plant. We also study a kind of column which is typical in ancient egypt, namely those whose capitals reproduce the faces of the goddess hathor or of the god bes. The second part deals with the meaning of these egyptian columns. This study is made possible by the texts of the temple dedications where different architectural elements are usually depicted. A translation and a theological commentary of the erecting the pillar-iwn and offering the papyrus-w3d are given and discussed. In comparing the archaeological data and the texts, we can say that the columns are elements conditioned by the tempel and, if we dare say, by a religious hymn, describing theology of the place where they are erected

Full textThe spreading of the rural chapels in Gascony and in the Basque Country which seems « static » reveals a growing takeover by the tridentine Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this phenomenon is intensified by new chapels mainly devoted to Mary. The Church adapts a pre-existing system and improves it. It reinvests the local religious culture founded on rural chapels which are deeply part of the Gascon and Basque identity. In these chapels devoted to Our Lady, pilgrimages and processions are furthered, undermining the influence of some rural chapels, some of which shelter “superstitious” and “secular” practices at the limit of the legal religion. Thus it creates a hierarchic organization which constitutes the spearhead of the tridentine reform. The faithful are guided by the brotherhoods, a devoted clergy and sometimes a religious order (convents, monasteries …). The rural chapels take over the “re-catholicization”. A wide movement of the rural populations’ cultural integration actually seems to be set up by the Tridentine Church. Finally, as a “re-catholicization” medium of the rural populations, the chapels integrate into a will to fight against Protestantism known as the Calvinism in South-Western France. Some sanctuaries create a real zone of influence delimiting the cultural area of Gascony and the Basque Country

Full textLonganikos, in the south Peloponnese, near Mistra, was, at the time of the despotate of the Morea, a village of some importance which held a kind of feudal autonomy, political and military. This is obvious, not only from some meagre historical evidence, but chiefly, from the existence of three churches decorated with frescoes of high quality: the church of Saint George, of the holy apostles and of the dormition of the virgin. Parallel study of the entire mural decoration of all three churches allowed us to pursue the painting production within the confines of a single village and for a specific period of about fifty years from the end of the fourteenth to the mid of the fifteenth centuryand to establish the role of certain ateliers of mistra in regional aristic production. The Longanikos' wallpaintings, in particular, depend, to a great degree, on ateliers active in certain churches and chapels of the capital of the despotate, Mistra

Full textAccording to the Freudian model, religion is one of the main factors in the work of culture. This active nature of religion can be found, at the individual level, throughout the new data regarding the contemporary subject, and may be coined as 'subjectivation'. Thus, this dissertation undertakes the task of studying how the person who adopts a religion makes the space of one's faith one's own. This study falls within the register of an anthropological thinking rooted in the psychoanalytical theory. It pits against each other two types of discourse - the psychoanalytical one and the religious one-within the broader perspective of an archaeology of knowledge. The reason why the psychoanalytical and the religious field should be made to interact is that they produce a comment on each other, thus constituting a fruitful thinking process. Four main topics are tackled and linked together: first, an analysis of the new shapes taken by religion, second an exploration of the many subjectivation processes in relation with this new given, third some thinking around the necessity to 'mourn God' in our culture and its impact on the believer, and last a thorough study of the 'tools' involved in subjectivation and transformation, as linked with religion. In the course of this presentation, the conversion model will be studied, as well as the creative register of mysticism. If the 'clinical' side of psychoanalysis may be evoked lightly, some spiritual texts- contemporary and modem alike- will be more heavily relied upon. We will conclude on the paradigm of the creative subject, thus suggesting a possible way out of the work of the negative, in the Hegelian or psychoanalytical definition of the term

Full textThe thesis "alain fournier his writing and culture" brings into question the legends generated by many critics and hagiographers concerning the author of le grand meaulnes. The correspondance between. A. Fournier and j. Riviere is the life line without which it is impossible to recount his formative years which teemed with bookish encounters. The authors most frequently and enthusiastically read were claudel and gide in whom it is easy to recognize the intellectual mentors who played such a vital part in unfolding fournier's creative processes and his aesthetics regarding the novel. Alain fournier's artistic education owes a lot to the preraphaelites (which he discovered during his time in the united kingdom) and to symbolist painters such as carriere and redon : the dreamlike quality which enshrouds the grand meaulnes might well have been instigated by them. M. Denis a pre-war painter belonging to a christian revival group, no doubt rekindled in fournier the faith of his childhood. In this way alain-fournier is placed in relation to the philosophical and spiritual trends of the years 1900 to 1913. This was a time when the intellectual elite of french youth, haunted by tormented self-questioning, tended to look to well-known converts such as claudel, peguy, leon bloy. In this work are laid out he complex stages of his spiritual evolution. His mystical yearnings are not compatible with doctrines and orthodoxy

Full textStarting from the phokian national legend which consists in a cycle of tales reporting the wars of independence of the phokians against the thessalians in the archaic age, celebrated at the phokian federal sanctuary of artemis elaphebolos in hyampolis, it is shown that the greeks of the archaic and classical periods developped a complex and systematic thinking about exceptions to their own rules of hoplitic war. When wars of annihilation threatened the very existence of peoples and cities, artemis was called to instil the boldness and the courage to face the greatest risks, to inspire the devices to win these wars which transgress every admitted limit and to make civilization triumph where it seemed doomed to sink into wildness. The pondering of the greeks about the extreme forms of war is to be placed in the larger frame of a consideration on "extreme situations" by which the city, opposing the extreme radicalism of mystic trends like orphism which branded her as the absolute evil, endeavoured to explore and draw the limits of human condition at a distance of both the worst and the impossible best. Thus conceived, this whole work is intended as a contribution to the study of the relations between myth and history

Full textThis Ph. D. Thesis offers a description of contemporary contextual Pacific Islands’ theology. The methodological approach is interdisciplinary, drawing on history, sociology and anthropology, missiology, and theology. The first part is a diachronic study of the origin of this new kind of theology in the context of decolonisation and regionalisation of Christianity through the Pacific Churches’ ecumenical network from the 1970’s to the 2000’s. The thoughts of three contemporary Pacific theologians are presented in detail: Sione ‘Amanaki Havea, Sevati Tuwere, Ama ‘Amalele Tofaeono. The second part is more synchronic, proposing a typology of specific theological themes in the Pacific: the different representations of God, Christology, “Theology of Celebration”, “Theology of Identity”. The purpose of this part is to work on cultural symbols like the land or homeland (fenua / vanua), kava, traditional hut, and yam, among others, and to study the link between religion and culture and the use of tradition. The third and last part deals with the theoretical issue of contextualisation in theology, the origin of the word and of the concept of contextualisation as well as its limits from an ecumenical point of view. This section also takes into account the problematic of the connection between culture and theology in the contemporary context of a globalised Christianity

Full textA long experience of teaching has nurtured the research which finds its formalized expression in this thesis. This experience has revealed and confirmed the deep-rooted conviction that secondary-school boys and girls have a real demand for the study of religions and their history. Their interest in religion focuses on the meaning and origin of the beliefs and rituals connected with the major landmarks of man's life, in other words, it has nothing to do with the idea of a salvation to come. The resort to hermeneutics springs from an attempt to understand and acknowledge one's origin: ethics thus becomes central to hermeneutics. Some sort of "complicity" can be traced between morals and science and, as is the case with ecology, it is based upon the absolute necessity to respect others and nature. Science and religion are no longer at ads and the various representations of god express that manor purpose of religion: giving the world its ethical sense

Full textOur presence from 1990 to 2010 as a social worker in Beaubreuil, district of the city of Limoges, Haute-Vienne, allowed us to support, observe and take part for over twenty years in the Vietnamese migration processes. All this time, we noted from a psychological perspective, that ruptures, resulting from the exile, then from the culture shock, were born by contacts with the host society, have given rise to individuals, complex problems including identity ones. In exile, to face the psychosocial risks caused by the instability of their psychic structure and their cultural system, the Vietnamese have invested public and private areas offered by the host culture. These approaches, multiple, allowed them in the redevelopment of these areas, to find, to recreate the elements perceived by them as fundamental in their native culture, necessary and essential to their work of psychic restructuring. In France, the cultural injunction of religious altars development in the private sphere has led them to reinterpret in a subjective way the question of the different components of their identity personal and social, cultural and religious The interactions between the native culture injunction and the space proposed by the host culture has engaged transformations, changes in the elaboration of religious altars. In that way, they are reflecting and are forming analyzers, particularly relevant to us, the intercultural exchange process
