Full textTitanium is considered a biomaterial (biocompatible material) due to its low reactivity and the great stability of its surface native oxide layer. With excellent mechanical properties, titanium is widely used as bone substitutes and dental implants. Aiming to contribute for the development of new surfaces to promote osteoblastic cell grow, two ion-beam-modified titanium samples were compared with two commercially available surfaces: polystyrene treated for cellular cultures (PC), and regular titanium used in dental implants (TI). The modified titanium samples were ion beam implanted with 30 and 77 keV phosphorous and BF2, respectively. All surfaces were employed for in vitro assays using cultures of osteoblastic cells (MG-63). The Phosphatase Alkaline Enzymatic Activity (ALP) was measured and associated with the mineralized bio-film formed by the differentiated cells. The concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the mineralized bio-film was measured by Proton Induced X-ray Emission, PIXE. Scanning Electron Microscope images were used to access the bio-film homogeneity and integrity. Contact angle measurements were used to characterize the wettability of the surfaces and the resulting bio-film. In spite of being more hydrophilic, the surfaces PC and TI formed of a less homogeneous bio-film than the PT and BFT surfaces, which were less hydrophilic. The ALP in the cell culture medium indicated greater consumption than secretion for PC and TI, while for PT and BFT accumulation of ALP was observed. Concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were greater for PC and TI samples. The four surfaces can be considered biocompatible (not cytotoxic) due to mineral bio-film formation and enzymatic activity measurements.

Full textThis work investigates conceptual and editorial transformations that have been occurring in the area of cultural journalism during the past two decades. It will focus on newspapers in Sao Paulo. As an observation method aiming to detect alterations on the incidence of informative services on the pages of the cultural sections of two newspapers, Folha de S.Paulo and O Estado de S.Paulo, a theoretical model has been developed to classify journalistic production. This numerical model has been applied to almost five-dozen editions of the following sections of the newspapers studied: Ilustrada, Letras, Mais!, TV Folha, Caderno 2, Cultura and Telejornal. They were published between 1990 and 2000. In addition to that, tens of sources have been analyzed in order to formalize the field. Those were referred by the newspapers themselves, by the academic and professional literature and by other written, oral and digital records. Such material reflects partially the intense contemporary debate on the crisis of criticism, which is a wide issue that includes the referential destruction of the canon and the undermining effect of market pressures on journalism. The results clearly show that there is a demand for new models of journalistic appreciation on the artistic-cultural sphere, although they are not definite evidence of the appearance of new journalistic formats, which are conceptually deprived of opinion and analysis.

Full textLearning a language is not only about vocabulary, grammar, speaking and understanding the language, but also about apprehending the culture which the language is built on. The cultural aspect of the students’ education is governed by the different themes and countries presented in the text books, and also by other material that the teacher might offer. This study suggests that one cannot blindly trust that the text books fully live up to these criteria, regarding a diverse representation of the Spanish speaking countries and their respective cultures, and that a critical analysis of the text books is important when presenting a non-stereotypical image to the students. In this essay three didactic books are analyzed from a cultural perspective related to the themes and countries represented in the texts. The result shows, on one hand, an overrepresentation of Spain, with more varying themes; and on the other hand, less variation when dealing with the few Hispanic countries that are mentioned.

Full textResults of previous research has found increased potential for the consolidation of bone grafts by demineralization of the graft material and / or areas of consolidation. However there is a lack of foundation supported by biological evidence of benefits from such procedures. To test this hypothesis, the bone tissue of the calvaria of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were exposed to conditioning by citric acid for 15, 30, 90 and 180 seconds (test group). Forty-five bone disks measuring three millimeters in diameter were removed from the animals, of which 36 were conditioned with citric acid pH 1 to 50% and nine did not receive conditioning (control group). About nine disks in each group were pre-cultured with MC3T3- E1 osteoblasts for 24, 48 and 72 hours (three discs of each group at each time point). Analysis of cell morphology, number of cells attached on the surface and the coverage area of these surfaces by pre-osteoblasts were performed on scanning electron microscopy. There was na increase in the number of cells attached to surfaces over time, regardless of conditioning or application time. However, this difference was not statistically significant intra-group (p <0.05) when comparing the periods of 24 and 72 hours of incubation. The coverage area of the surfaces of cells increased significantly with time only in the test groups, also among the incubation periods of 24 and 72 hours (p <0.01). The control group presented with 50% or less of surface area coverage compared to the other. The duration of application of the acid did not affect significantly this parameter of evaluation, but in groups 15 and 30, the bonearea covered more than tripled from 24 to 72 hours (p <0.01), with about 70 % of the area covered by cells, versus 30% in the control group. It was concluded that bone demineralization in the studied conditioning times provides a substrate on which cells acquire pre-osteoblastic morphology compatible with more advanced stage of differentiation, promoting greater coverage area, which increases the potential for deposition of new bone on these surfaces compared to the tissue-air basis.

Abstract:The Objective of this study was to evaluate the topography and surface biofilm formation of feldspathic ceramics obtained through two techniques of preparation and two surface treatments, as well as to evaluate the viability of human gingival fibroblasts (FMM-1) growth on these materials. A total of 52 blocks of each type of feldspathic ceramic were made: VM9 obtained by the stratification technique and Vita Blocs Mark II (VMII) for the CAD/CAM system (both, Vita Zahnfabrik). The blocks' surfaces were standardized in a polishing machine to the dimensions of 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 mm and blocks were divided into two surface finishing treatments: polishing with Ceramisté rubbers + polishing with paste; and glaze application + sintering. The Ra and RSm roughness parameters were measured through a contact rugosimeter. Samples were sterilized and then contaminated (n = 10) for initial heterotypic biofilm formation of S. mutans, S. sanguinis and C. albicans, whose adherence was quantified by counting colony forming units (CFU/mL). The MTT test was used to evaluate the cellular viability of the materials to the growth of human gingival fibroblasts (FMM-1) in 24 h and 7 days (n=12). Qualitative analyzes of the specimens' surface were performed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D optical profilometry. Surface free energy (SFE) was calculated from goniometry analyzes of polar and apolar liquids in 10 samples of 15 x 15 x 1.5 mm. The results of Ra, RSm and ELS were subjected to 2-way ANOVA (Material x surface treatment) followed by Tukey's test (both, α=95%), and UFC (material x surface treatment x microorganisms) and MTT (material x surfacetreatment x time) data were evaluated by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=95%). SEM and profilometry images were described. The polished ceramics presented lower roughness (Ra p=0.015; RSm p=0.049) ...

SEM and profilometry images were described. The polished ceramics presented lower roughness (Ra p=0.015; RSm p=0.049) and higher SFE (p=0.00), with the highest Ra being verified for glazed VM9. Bacterial adherence was influenced by the interaction of all factors (p=0.018). Streptococcus formed in greater number in all materials, but on polished VMII there was no adherence of C. albicans. Initially, the materials showed no cytotoxicity, but the cell viability of all groups was reduced after 7 days (p=0.00). Micrographs showed that microorganisms adherence occurred regardless of irregularities in the topography of the materials, and the profilometry images emphasized the grooved pattern of the polished samples and the glaze accumulation in "islands" in glazed samples. The surface treatments had greater influence than the technique of making the feldsphapatic ceramics. It could be concluded that both obtaining techniques resulted in biocompatible feldsphatic ceramics and that the surface finishing by polishing resulted in lower mean roughness, higher SFE and lower C. albicans adhesion.

Full textTi and its alloys are metals that show a complete success when used in biological environment. These metals are widely used in bone implants due to their appropriated clinical applications. Biomechanical and biochemical stability, biocompatibility and an efficient osseointegration are the principal requisites to select a biomaterial for using in orthopedics and dentals surgicals implants. To improve bone-tissue integration, various techniques have been used as to increase the roughness and bioactivity of titanium surfaces. Topographic features on implants ranging from micrometers to nanometers and calcium-phosphate coatings are relevant to the biological response. In this work, new surface modifications on Ti for prosthetic implants were developed and tested. Surface treatments of pure Ti were produced by pitting, anodization, chemical deposition of Ca-phosphates and the combination of these processes. Mesenchymal Stem Cells were cultured on the Ti substrates to evaluate the quality of the proposed surfaces modifications for prosthetic implants. Biological analysis and MEV analysis were carried out to characterize the nano and micropores on the surfaces as well as the growth and modification of stem cells. Additionally, titanium surfaces previously polarized under potenciostatic conditions were investigated by SEM. The aim of this research work was to study the effects of electrolyte composition on microstructural feature and vertical alignment of TiO2.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hidroretentor polymer doses (hydrogel) on productivity and quality of irrigated radish, via surface and subsurface drip. The treatments consisted of two positions of installation of gotejadoras lines, surface and subsurface and six hidroretentor polymer doses (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 g.m2) in a Hapludox. The experiment was conducted in two crop cycles in the period from October to November 2013 and April-May 2014, in the area of Irrigation and Drainage, the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences (FCA) of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) in Dourados-MS. The experimental design was a randomized block in split plot with five repetitions. At 33 days after sowing (DAS) harvest was performed and evaluated the productivity parameters: number of leaves (leaves.plant-1), root diameter (mm), length of shoot and root (cm) fresh weight of shoot and root (g), dry weight of shoot and root (g). And quality parameters: pH, and total soluble solids (° Brix) in the roots, firmness and acidity. All variables were subjected to analysis of variance by F test and applied to source of variation polymer doses hidroretentor comparison using regression model. It was found that the production of radish roots, was influenced by the position of drip hoses, and the irrigation surface drip was statistically superior to subsurface drip to the number of leaves and fresh root mass in the first cycle (October / November) and shoot length in the second growing season (April / May). With respect to hidroretentor polymer doses, it can be concluded that radish culture responded significantly doses in two cycles of cultivation.
