In the tale-within-tale ‘Cupid and Psyche’ narrated in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, the female heroine Psyche goes through a series of wanderings and tasks as punishments for seeing her husband Cupid's real form out of curiosity. Psyche's curiosity connects this internal tale with the external narratives in Metamorphoses, the protagonist of which, Lucius, shares a similar curiosity that leads to his downfall. While scholars attribute favourable qualities to Lucius’ curiosity despite its negative consequences, they deny the same value to Psyche's curiosity. In this paper, I argue against the condem

The Cupid and Psyche episode in the Metamorphoses of Apuleius is rightly viewed as an escape from the novel's ‘real world’. But that does not of course prevent it from saying serious things about the nature of love and the psychology of the lovers. My aim in this article is to argue that the Cupid who removes Psyche to an earthly paradise (5.1–2.2) is just as much in need of an emotional education as she is. Indeed, initially Psyche could well have been better off with ‘the lowest of mankind’ with whom Venus had instructed him to ensnare her (4.31.3). For her, Cupid may in fact prove at the ou

Abstract:
AbstractPrairie grouse, which include greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), lesser prairie-chicken (T. pallidicinctus), and sharp-tailed grouse (T. phasianellus), are species of high conservation concern and have been identified as potential indicator species for various rangeland ecosystems. Greater prairie-chickens are found in scattered populations in isolated tallgrass prairie throughout the Midwest, but primarily occur in the more expansive tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies in the Great Plains. Lesser prairie-chickens occur in mixed-grass, shortgrass, and arid shrublands of the southern Great Plains. Sharp-tailed grouse occur in mixed-grass, shortgrass, shrub steppe, and prairie parkland vegetation types and are broadly distributed across the northern Great Plains, portions of the Great Basin, and boreal parkland areas of Alaska and Canada. Due to reliance on a variety of rangeland types, consideration of management and anthropogenic activities on rangelands are critical for prairie grouse conservation. Grazing is one of the more prominent activities that has the potential to affect prairie grouse by altering plant structure and composition, and recent research has attempted to identify the mechanisms of grazing effects on prairie grouse. Fire is another important disturbance affecting grouse habitat, especially considering how the current distribution and intensity of fire differs from what occurred historically. Additionally, human infrastructure in the form of roads and energy development, as well as land conversion and degradation such as tillage and tree encroachment can fragment and reduce habitat for prairie grouse. Finally, weather including drought, extended rain, and temperature extremes are common across the distribution of prairie grouse. Although not directly under management control, the effects of weather are an overarching factor that need to be considered in conservation planning. This chapter will summarize the life-histories and habitat requirements of prairie grouse, discuss how rangeland management and other human activities affect them, highlight major threats to prairie grouse and provide recommendations for future management and research.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘CUPID’ sarcophagi seem overwhelming in their sheer variety and number. AsASR V. ii.(Erotensarkophage) is yet to appear the major studies remain those of Stuveras (1969) who looks at cupids in all branches of art, and Matz (1958a) and Turcan 1966a, whose interests begin with cupids which appear on Dionysiac sarcophagi. In addition, there are surveys of the material in KS 206 ff. and inLIMC III. i. 952 ff. It is clear from these that children’s sarcophagi show most of the usual cupid scenes, as well as others which arc apparently exclusive to them. But it is important to start by clarifying what is meant here by ‘cupid sarcophagi’, since cupids involve several problems of identity. In the first place there are distinctions to be made between single and multiple figures, and between mythological and generic. The single figure may represent the god Cupid, although it is hard to tell this out of a mythological context (as on 1.46 or 6.18). Examples where he appears with Psyche on children’s sarcophagi are discussed separately in Section 7. Multiple cupids appear in mythological scenes, usually to facilitate some romantic encounter (as with Endymion on 2.6;LIMC III. i. ro42 f.), but are more frequently shown in generic activities.

Abstract This section develops themes from Sections 16 and 17 by focusing on scenes in which the usual adult protagonists are replaced by younger figures, either cupids or children.’ Almost all the cases from our total sample are to be found on mythological sarcophagi. Scenes of Meleager are most numerous: one example (2.14) depicts the boar-hunt with children as Meleager and Atalanta (who is shown like Psyche), and the others (2.15-2.18) illustrate the return of his body. The lid A.1 shows both scenes together with a lion-hunt using child-like figures.2 There is a varied group of Dionysiac examples with cupid versions of the god in a chariot procession (3.8), of the death of Pentheus (3.18), and a fragment showing cupid-satyrs and Pan (3.21). Finally there are isolated cases: two scenes of Cupid and Psyche at feasts where the other participants are depicted as cupids (7.1 and 7.7; cf. 6.42), child-Muses (5.5; cf. the lid of A.10), cupid and psyche Seasons (8.18), the cupidMercury on 9.6, and the various gods on 6.35. Abstract This first part of the book comprises the catalogue of selected examples. This follows the subject classification adopted by Koch and Sichtermartn inRomische Sarkophage (KS), which is an arrangement also followed by recent major catalogues of sarcophagi such as those of the Louvre (1985) and the British Museum (1990). Schemes like this allow individual subjects to be discussed in tum, but they are often too rigid to make the most of the multilayered imagery of later Roman funerary art; some flexibility is needed, involving cross-referencing of material. Cupids, as we will see, are particularly resistant to compartmentalization in such schemes, given their varied relationship to human activities, so that a more flexible approach to their classification has been taken here than in some of these other volumes. This is also true for some other motifs and decorative schemes which have both ‘pagan’ and Christian examples.

Abstract The rest of Part II looks at the contribution made by scenes other than those which depict the human child using the imagery of childhood. This will be explored from various angles. First there are separate sections on mythological subjects (16), on cupids (17), and on scenes with child or cupid protagonists (18), since these all in some way replicate the views of the child just discussed in Sections 12 to 14. Then various images to do with the child in life (19) and death (20) are considered. The final section (21) looks at Christian material.

Abstract:
Abstract Cupid and Psyche are versatile images on sarcophagi. Some representations allude to their mythological story, others treat them as individual allegorical figures. They may appear together, separately, or in multiples. Schlam (1976) has reviewed their representation in ancient art in the context of Apuleius’ telling of their story inMetamorphoses VI. Despite his conclusion that the two versions, literary and visual, are independent of each other, he is clear about the rich potential of Cupid and Psyche as artistic motifs. They are capable of expressing quite specific symbolism, but equally seem to have been used in some settings because ‘they simply remained available’ (Schlam 1992: 93). This pattern is reflected in these children’s sarcophagi. In addition they include scenes such as the marine feasts and cupidthiasoi, and the distinctive Season sarcophagus (8.18) which are found rarely (if at all) elsewhere.

Abstract:
Second stage cylinders for polyethylene hyper compressors are among the most stressed pressure vessels in the industry. Due to the high operating pressure and pressure fluctuations between suction and discharge, these cylinders must be designed to withstand high fatigue loads. Packing cups are the most critical cylinder component and, in particular, the lube oil ducts are the bottleneck for reliability. This work deals with a structural optimization of packing cups focused on the most critical packing cup area: the lube oil hole. Various pre-compression techniques (i.e., shrink-fit and autofre

Hyper compressors are designed for LDPE production, compressing ethylene up to 3500bar with only two stages of compression, in order to reach conditions for the polymerization. The high operating and fluctuating pressure strongly impact design and life of all cylinder components. The packing cups are among the most stressed components of a hyper compressor cylinder. They are particularly subjected to very high pulsating pressures, thus fatigue and wear. Therefore, they are periodically replaced during maintenance and are critical for availability of the hyper compressor. A typical hyper compre

In modern Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), modular metal-backed acetabular cups consisting of a metal shell backing with porous coatings for fixation and a modular polyethylene liner for articulation are currently the most widely used cementless acetabular cups. Modular acetabular cups give surgeons the flexibility to change femoral head size, liner offset, and liner-lip buildup during hip arthroplasty as well as the ability to change the liner without removing a bone-ingrowth metal shell during revision surgery. However, concerns have been noted with modular metal backed acetabular cups. Poor lo

More than one million hip joint replacements are performed each year in the world. However, the implants do not last forever due to material limitations, even though the operation is successful. The most common material combination used today is a CoCr head articulating against an UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) acetabular cup. Several investigations have shown that the metal head is roughened inside the body and thus accelerating wear of the polymer cup. The sterilization method is also known to have effect on the wear properties. In vitro wear tests are however usually perf

Cup anemometers are most commonly used for measuring wind speeds in the atmospheric boundary layer, among others for site assessment. The simple design of a cup anemometer consists of three cups mounted on a vertical shaft. Due to the difference in the drag coefficient of the open and the closed side of the cups the system is rotating, where the rotational frequency is proportional to the incoming wind speed. One downside of cup anemometers is their asymmetric dynamic response to accelerating and decelerating wind speeds under turbulent wind conditions. This asymmetry results in a systematic o

The technology and procedures for the inspection of pipelines from offshore production and process facilities to shore or other offshore installations has developed rapidly in recent years. This rapid development can be attributed to several factors including pipeline operators protecting their investment in their lines, heightened environmental protection concerns, and increasing regulatory requirements. A limited number of the offshore pipeline systems in the U.S. currently include the ability to inspect the trunkline using either an ultrasonic or magnetic particle inspection pig. This pig i
