Abstract:
The twenty-first century has brought many innovations in haematology, with improved diagnostic technology, which may inform treatment choices for malignant diseases, and a better understanding of the genetics and/or epigenetics underlying many diseases. Unfortunately, the aetiology of most of these diseases still eludes us, and some common diseases such as sickle cell disease await simple, inexpensive, and widely available curative treatment. For reasons that are often obscure, some diseases have become fashionable and attract large research financial backing, whereas some do not. With the adv

This chapter examines and defines the differences between group therapy and group support for people with substance abuse and addiction and investigates how these therapeutic interventions are used. A model providing guidance to integrative health-care providers on how to best assess the quality and appropriateness of various group interventions (group therapy and group support) is presented, and calls for future research are made to assist providers, clients, and researchers in determining the specific curative factors in these group interventions.

Abstract:
In the past twenty years, health humanists and scholars of literature and medicine have drawn on Romantic ideas to argue that literature can cure spiritual ills by making sufferers feel whole again. But this model oversimplifies the relationship between literature and pain, perpetuating a distorted picture of how Romantic writers thought literature addressed suffering. The Poetics of Palliation documents how writers like William Wordsworth and Mary Shelley developed more complex, palliative forms of literary medicine: therapies that stressed literature’s manifold relationship to pain and its p

The meaning and role of palliative and spiritual care have evolved over the last decades, along with the dramatically changing clinical picture of AIDS. Although advances in antiretroviral therapy and medical interventions have allowed persons with HIV/AIDS and access to care to live longer and healthier lives, many persons in the United States and throughout the world continue to die of AIDS. There is an increased need for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care including psychosocial and family support. Despite the advances in surgical techniques, very few ACHD patients have a truly curative procedure, with the majority being at lifelong risk of complications, including ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmias, and premature death. Ventricular dysfunction, leading to heart failure, remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, with some studies showing that it accounts for up to 40% of deaths in adults with CHD. This chapter discusses drug therapy, transplantation, and end-of-life care in ACHD.

In A Refuge of Cure or Care: The Sensory Dimensions of Confinement at the Worcester State Hospital for the Insane, Madeline Kearin Ryan analyzes the therapy model of the nineteenth-century asylum. Because the five senses were believed to provide a direct conduit into a person’s mental condition, the curative force of the hospital was thought to reside in its command over sensory experience. Ryan examines how the institution was designed to target each of the five senses as a mode of therapy, and conversely, how that well-intentioned design materialized in the haphazard realm of institutional p

Renal cancer is the commonest malignancy of the kidney and worldwide, accounts for between 2% and 3% of the total cancer burden. The mainstay of curative treatment remains surgery. There have been significant advances in surgical technique, the most important ones being nephron-sparing surgery and laparoscopic nephrectomy. The medical treatment of advanced renal cell cancer has only improved markedly in the last decade with the development of antiangiogenic tyrosine-kinase inhibitors, inhibitors of mammalian target of rapamycin, and a diminished role for immunotherapy.Tyrosine-kinase inhibitor

The variety of conditions that are considered to be ‘cancer’ is extremely wide, with marked variation in the management approach from disease to disease. A common feature in the management of malignant conditions, however, is the involvement of a wide range of medical professionals at different stages of the patient pathway. This commonly includes physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and specialist nurses, as well as a plethora of other allied disciplines. As such, a practice that has been widely adopted is to work as a multidisciplinary

The urinary system is the primary target of Schistosoma haematobium infection, which leads to granuloma formation in the lower urinary tract that heals with fibrosis and calcification. While the early lesions may be associated with distressing acute or subacute symptoms, it is the late lesions that constitute the main clinical impact of schistosomiasis. The latter include chronic cystitis, ureteric fibrosis, ureterovesical obstruction or reflux which may lead to chronic pyelonephritis. This chapter and the next are about ending honor killing through moral transformations occurring within communities. The emphasis is on facilitating and curating reforms that community members come to willingly adopt as their own. Sociocultural norms, expectations, and conditions must be revised such that no one can conceive of honor killing as an honorable deed. Here the practicality of such an outcome is emphasized by examining four subjects. First, the formation by Badshah Khan of the Khudai Kidhmatgar into a nonviolent and service-based army among the Pathans demonstrates the possibility o
