Abstract:
There are multiple sides to every story, and while statistical topic models have been highly successful at topically summarizing the stories in corpora of text documents, they do not explicitly address the issue of learning the different sides, the viewpoints, expressed in the documents. In this paper, we show how these viewpoints can be learned completely unsupervised and represented in a human interpretable form. We use a novel approach of applying CorrLDA2 for this purpose, which learns topic-viewpoint relations that can be used to form groups of topics, where each group represents a viewpoint. A corpus of documents about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is then used to demonstrate how a Palestinian and an Israeli viewpoint can be learned. By leveraging the magnitudes and signs of the feature weights of a linear SVM, we introduce a principled method to evaluate associations between topics and viewpoints. With this, we demonstrate, both quantitatively and qualitatively, that the learned topic groups are contextually coherent, and form consistently correct topic-viewpoint associations.

This is the second time I am submitting my thesis here on DiVa.

I didn't attach the actual thesis document (i.e. the pdf file) last time because we were submitting on for publication in a scientific conference and I wanted to respect the double blind review process and not publish anything before.

Now, I want to publish the thesis document here on DiVa.

Jump, Harriet Sarah. "Mark Akenside and the poetry of current events, 1738-1770." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1988. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:2f5ebba5-9a25-4d93-aabb-b8e999433027.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide an analysis of the historical and political context of a group of poems which were written by Mark Akenside between 1738 and 1770. Most of these poems were composed in response to particular political events or situations, or to the publication of works of literature, history, or theology; the remainder are verse-epistles addressed to political figures who were personal friends of the poet. Arguments have also been included for the attribution to Akenside of a small number of anonymous poems. I have taken a broadly chronological approach. The first chapter covers the period 1738-1739, and discusses the background and references of two poems written before and just after the declaration of the War of Jenkins' Ear. The subject of the second chapter is two poems addressed to the 'patriot' politician William Pulteney in 1742 and 1744 (before and after his supposed political apostasy). The third chapter considers the case for attribution of two short poems on the subject of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, and includes a discussion of an Ode addressed to the Earl of Huntingdon in 1747, In the fourth chapter, a poem composed during the contested Westminster election of 1749 is discussed, in addition to Odes addressed to Sir Francis-Henry Drake, Charles Townshend, and Dr Caleb Hardinge. The fifth chapter includes a consideration of Odes written on the occasion of the publication of three books: William Warburton's edition of Pope's works, Frederick the Great's Memoires, and Bishop Hoadly's Sermons; a second Ode to Drake is also discussed. The sixth chapter discusses another poem which relates to Warburton, an Ode on the poetry of the Abbe de Chaulieu, and a letter and an Ode on the subject of the Seven Years' War. The conclusion considers Akenside's revisions in the light of allegations that he abandoned his Whig principles and became a Tory towards the end of his life. My object has been not only to elucidate obscure references and to supply contextual background information, but also to provide a picture of the political and intellectual history of the mid-eighteenth century as seen through the eyes of a highly intelligent, if politically partisan, observer.

Zakrasek, Mary Margaret. "The effectiveness of NEWSGAME as an educational tool in the teaching of current events." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184869.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if an educational tool such as NEWSGAME affects students' learning about current events. To determine the effectiveness of this game, an end-of-year post-test was given to the following groups: (1) students that played NEWSGAME regularly; (2) students that played NEWSGAME occasionally; (3) students that never played NEWSGAME. In addition, demographic data such as age and sex was analyzed to determine if differences in knowledge of various current event categories existed among these groups. A survey measuring students' opinion of NEWSGAME was also collected. This study involved the participation of 350 students in 11 social studies classrooms. Of the total sample, there were 183 males and 157 females. Ten cases were not identified. The students ranged in age from 11 to 19 with the majority being 12-15 year-olds. Instrumentation consisted of a Current Events Questionnaire composed of 81 questions covering 14 areas of international, national and state issues. These consisted of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank statements. The data analysis indicated that students who played NEWSGAME regularly scored higher than those who played occasionally. Those who played NEWSGAME occasionally scored higher than those who never played NEWSGAME. Males were found to score higher than females whether NEWSGAME was played regularly or in the occasional/none category. Students over the age of 14 who played regularly scored higher than students under the age of 14. An unusual finding was that students under the age of 14 who played occasionally or not at all scored better than students over age 14 who played occasionally or not at all. Overall, it can be concluded that the NEWSGAME experience was most beneficial for males who were older than 14 who played the game regularly. In response to the question whether students liked or disliked NEWSGAME, 91% indicated they liked this educational tool.

Lock, Robert. "Perceived impact of past significant life events on current well-being." Thesis, Royal Holloway, University of London, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604350.

Full text
Abstract:
Life events are widely seen as having an important effect on well-being. This thesis addressed some of the gaps in the literature by examining how positive as well as negative past events are perceived by individuals as affecting different facets of current well-being. In addition, the study examined how these relationships are moderated by insight, reflection and rumination. Psychological undergraduate students (N=73) provided examples of past positive and negative life events and gave open-ended responses about what they saw as the beneficial and adverse consequences of those events for them. These responses were coded for the presence of the six dimensions of Psychological Well-being (PWB) outlined by Ryff (1989) as well as for affect. Self-report measures of insight, reflection and rumination were also completed. Beneficial effects on affect and all the dimensions of PWB, with the exception of Autonomy, were present in the open ended responses of how past positive and negative events were currently impacting on well-being. Adverse effects on affect and the PWB dimensions of Relations with Others, Self-Acceptance and Environmental Mastery were present in the responses of how past positive and negative events were currently impacting on well-being. Relations with others was the most frequently identified dimension of PWB in response to what the beneficial and adverse effects of past events were, indicating the importance of this area in clinical interventions. Personal Growth was the only PWB dimension to be more frequently identified in the responses of the beneficial effects of negative events compared to the beneficial effects of positive events. This indicates that therapeutic interventions targeting growth from previous negative events could benefit from focussing on this aspect of PWB. Reflection was positively correlated to the adverse effect of positive events, whilst rumination was positively con-elated to PWB for the adverse effect of negative events. Implications for clinical and non-clinical populations and possible future research are discussed.

Lawless, Zachary David. "Modeling Current and Future Windblown Utah Dust Events Using CMAQ 5.3.1." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9165.

Full text
Abstract:
Windblown dust events can be defined as windblown dust emitted from the Earth's surface to the atmosphere. These events have significant impact on local air quality. Predicting the location and magnitude of these events is vital for Utah air quality assessment and planning. Previous modeling studies have focused only on past dust events. This work utilized a state-of-the-science software framework based on the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) v5.3.1 modeling system to predict dust events in Utah. The framework was verified using previous studies for dust events in April 2017 and March 2010. Once verified, the framework was used to predict the impact of future land use properties on dust events. Two scenarios were studied – shrinking of the Great Salt Lake and the addition of large-scale solar farms west of the Wasatch Front. Both showed increases in dust concentrations overpopulated areas using the meteorological conditions from the April 2017 dust event. Such information from future impact studies can assess potential impacts from climate change and can guide government water and land use policies to mitigate dust event impacts.

Full text
Abstract:
With the advancement of spark ignition engines, lean or diluted in-cylinder charge is often used to improve the engine performance. Enhanced in-cylinder charge motion is widely applied under such conditions to promote the flame propagation, which raise challenges for the spark ignition system. In this work, the spark discharging process is investigated under different flow conditions via both optical diagnosis and electrical measurement. Results show that the spark plasma channel is stretched under flow conditions. A higher discharge current can maintain the stretched spark plasma for a longer duration. Re-strikes are observed when the spark plasma is stretched to a certain extent. The frequency of re-strikes increases with increased flow velocity and decreased discharge current level. The discharge duration reduces with the increased flow velocity. The effects of gas flow on the ignition and flame kernel development are studied in a constant volume optical combustion chamber with premixed lean and stoichiometric methane air mixture. Two spark strategies with low and high discharge current are used for the ignition. The flame propagation speed of both lean and stoichiometric mixtures increases with the increased gas flow velocity. A higher discharge current level retains a more stable spark channel and improves the flame kernel development for both lean and stoichiometric conditions, especially under the higher gas flow velocity of 20 m/s.

Abstract:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) started deploying queue warning trucks ahead of interstate work zones to alert motorists of queued traffic. Along with visually alerting the motorists, digital alerts were integrated with navigational applications such as Apple Maps, Waze, and the in-vehicle infotainment system of Stellantis vehicles. More than 45,000 hours of alerting was provided to motorists across various interstates in Indiana over a 26-month period. This report evaluated the impact of queue warning trucks on traffic using hard braking events and traffic speeds provided by granular connected trajectory vehicle data. Evaluation of over 370 hours of queuing with the presence of queue trucks and 52 hours of queuing without the queue trucks indicated a decrease in hard braking events by 80% when trucks were present with digital alerts. It was also observed that traffic speeds started to reduce approximately 1,500 to 2,000 ft in advance of deployed queue trucks.
