Abstract:
Universities are challenged by the goal of providing opportunities for student development in residence halls. One popular approach is based on wellness and, to date, no formal assessment of this approach had been completed. This study assessed the current status of wellness residence halls (WRHs) to summarize trends. A self-designed questionnaire was sent to residence life departments who were identified as having WRHs. The survey focused on program size, budget size/source, programming model, and staffing. Participants were asked to indicate departments which supported WRHs, what made WRHs unique, the relative success of their WRHs and what inhibited or contributed to that success. This instrument collected useful demographic data related to WRH programs; however, there were no discernible patterns indicative of a homogenous WRH movement (as special interest halls) taking place in this country. It is seemingly the commitment of staff and students which guarantees the success of wellness residence halls.<br>Fisher Institute for Wellness

Linse, Leif. "Capcal for small roundabouts : Current status and improvements." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för teknik och naturvetenskap, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-63822.

Full text
Abstract:
Questions have been raised regarding how good Capcal works for roundabouts with a weaving length smaller than 25 meters and if Capcal would work for weaving lengths lower than the 16 meters that is the lower limit in the current model. In this thesis, two possible improvements has been developed and tested on five roundabouts with a weaving length less than 25 meters. Work has been done to build alternative gap acceptance models ranging from removal of the 16-meter limit through re-estimation of the current model to a completely new model. In this thesis a new sub model has been introduced that take into account the uncertainty of if circulating vehicles will exit or continue to circulate. These sub models have been combined in 29 different ways including the current Capcal model configuration and have been tested with five different roundabouts. The conflict delay, which is caused by interaction with other vehicles, has been used to compare the model results with delay observations from video captures of the roundabouts.   Out of all model configurations, the original Capcal 3.3 model had the lowest difference in average between the model result and the observations. If the 16-meter weaving length restriction in the original model is removed, almost the same results are obtained as with the restriction. While none of the model configurations improved the model fit, no configuration could be statistically be rejected. In the results of individual roundabouts, there were differences between the model and observations of up to 50%. This shows that while this thesis could not find any improvements of Capcal, there is a potential for future work to develop improvements of the roundabout model.<br>I nuläget tillåter Capcal att växlingssträckor ner till 16 meter modelleras, men i dataunderlaget som användes vid skapandet av nuvarande modell finns endast med en cirkulationsplats under 25 meter.

Newman, K. J. "The current implementation status of the Boulder Model." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6976.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its inception just over 50 years ago, the Boulder Model has been the dominant training model in clinical psychology. The model has not been without its critics, however, and many commentators claim that it has not been implemented. Indeed, two alternative models of clinical training have emerged. However, many assertions about the Boulder Model's implementation failure are not well founded. This thesis was undertaken in an attempt to evaluate the current implementation status of the model that sought to define the essential character of the discipline of clinical psychology and ensure that the discipline would adapt to future changes in science, technology and society. In this thesis evidence pertaining to many of the Boulder Conference recommendations is critically reviewed. The evaluation of the implementation status of the Boulder Model presented in this thesis covers the following issues: the nature of the clinical graduates produced by the Boulder Model of training, practitioners' consumption and utilisation of research, indications of scientific behaviour among practitioners, clinical psychology's readiness to adapt to future changes in science, technology and society, and a critical appraisal of the nature of the clinical graduates produced by both the professional school and clinical scientist models. Critical attention is also given to the three philosophies of science most relevant for clinical psychology-empiricism, social constructionism and scientific realism-in an effort to clarify the critical role theories of science play in guiding both clinical science and clinical practice. The overall conclusion drawn in this thesis is that the Boulder Model has been implemented, albeit with two significant exceptions. Two possible future clinical training scenarios are depicted and the implications of these scenarios are critically explored. Based on the results of the thesis conclusions, some brief recommendations are made about how clinical psychology could strengthen its commitment to the spirit of the Boulder Model.

Abstract:
Fungal infections are ignored by social and political communities. However, they are estimated to affect more than a billion people, resulting in approximately 11.5 million life-threatening infections in the 'at risk' population and more than 1.5 million deaths annually. Though there have been huge advances in diagnostics and antifungal drug development over the past two decades, however, resource limited settings have not benefited from these advances. The aim of this research was to determine the burden of serious fungal infections in Nigerians with the appropriate underlying diseases. This epidemiological research was conducted across four study populations. Study 1; HIV-infected patients with CD4+ counts < 250 cells/mm³, irrespective of their ART status, a CrAg lateral flow assay was used for detecting cryptococcal antigenaemia (n=214). Study 2; a cross-sectional multicentre survey of TB patients being managed for smear negative or treatment failure TB irrespective of their HIV status (n=208). Study 3; a multicentre histoplasmin skin sensitivity survey amongst healthy HIV-infected and non-HIV infected participants; intradermally; induration ≥ 5 mm was considered to be histoplasmin positive (n=750). Study 4; a prospective cohort study of critically ill patients in a Nigerian ICU (n=71). Two retrospective studies to analyse the clinical picture of serious fungal infections in two at risk populations (HIV/AIDS and neonatal intensive care babies) in Nigerians was also conducted (n=7034; n=2712 respectively). Results revealed an overall seroprevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia of 8.9% with 6 (9.8%) in those with CD4+ cell counts < 100cells/mm³, 4 (5.0%) in the 100-200 group and 9 (12.3%) in 200-250 cells/mm³ group; a CPA prevalence of 8.7% (6.5% had HIV infection and 14.5% were HIV-negative) and a prior subclinical histoplasmosis of 4.4%. The ICU study revealed a 45% healthcare associated infection rate representing an incidence rate of 79/1000 patient-days in the ICU. The retrospective studies revealed a 2.3% rate of neonatal ICI with a case fatality rate of 18.5%. In the 12 years retrospective study 18% had a fungal OI with 88% of patients having initiated ART. In conclusion, serious fungal infections do occur in the at risk population in Nigeria and they constitute a significant public health challenge. Our findings demonstrate that there has been an underestimation of the burden of the problem in Nigerians. There is a dire need to design guidelines for the management of fungal infections in at risk population.

Abstract:
Only those who have been fully found themselves in this world can realise their natures. Only those who realise their natures can lead other natures to selfrealisation. Only those who lead other natures to self-realisation can realise the nature of things (Tzu-Ssu, an grandson of Confucius, quoted from Asplund: 1988) So why don't women try to find themselves in project management? Is this definitely not a career for a man only and not a no go area for woman either? Is project management not a gendered job, but depends on individuals' ability? This dissertation describes a study that exammes firstly the extent to which challenges in the workplace may cause women project managers to be in a significantly small minority, and secondly the potential for their amelioration. The data for this study comes from an analysis of information from the self-mailed survey questionnaire to 180 members of Australian Institute of Project Management in Queensland, who have been working in the project management field. The focuses of this research is the comparison of paiiicipants' views regarding their experiences and observations on various issues related to technical and gender aspects in the project management culture. When the data for this study was retrieved and evaluated, it was found that there ai·e only the relatively minor differences in expenences due to participants' gender, experience level, management level and feature of industries of the project managers. These experiences include discrimination against women in general, differences in project management style and the support from project manager not of participants' gender. However, the study found these differences did not negatively impact on pmiicipants' career progress. Regarding opportunities for change, the research found that there ai·e vanous opportunities for women project managers (for example, the changing social and project enviromnent or the achievement of women in this area). There is, therefore, an expectation that more women will become project managers in the future. The research also discusses several implications of how this may change the existing project culture and suggests some feasible initiatives for the industry's practice to make the change a reality

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Engineering and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, System Design and Management Program, 2011.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 65-68).<br>There are hundreds of weapons programs, under the management of the United States Air Force worth billions of dollars. These programs are being developed to fulfill a need in the U.S. defense strategy. Bringing these weapon systems to operational status is not an easy process. It takes communication and coordination of many stakeholders and development of state-of the-art technology. More often than not, weapons programs are developed with the final cost and schedule being much higher that forecasted. Inherently weapons systems are expensive, however the costs of these systems continue to rise with no apparent end in sight. The Government Accountability Office, RAND, Congressional studies and the Defense Acquisition Performance Assessment have has criticized the Department of Defense for escalating costs. These studies point to poor requirement definition, errors in cost and scheduling forecasts, poor oversight, bad decisions by the government, and failure to adopt recommendations from reform policies as the main causes. One way ameliorate cost escalation is to employ portfolio management technique. The Air Force groups their weapon systems into 20 portfolios. Some form of portfolio management has been employed for the last decade. Portfolio management cannot solve the issues above but it can offer a solution that can potentially save millions and perhaps billions of dollars This thesis examines the Air Force's current use of Portfolio Management theory and what opportunities we can do to improve it in the acquisition community. The thesis poses three research questions: 1) How can the Air Force better employ portfolio management to curb cost overruns and schedule delays in their weapon acquisition programs? 2) What can the Air Force do to empower portfolio managers for success? 3) What barriers can the Air Force eliminate or streamline to help portfolio managers execute their portfolios more effectively and efficiently. Acquisition professionals were interviewed to glean their perspectives and opinions. More specifically acquisition personnel were asked how portfolio management was being executed and how can the Air Force improve this technique to better execute weapon systems programs. From these interviews and the research conducted, the following recommendations were made: 1) Program Executive Officers should be given more authority with respect to utilizing funds and hiring of specialized personnel 2) The Air Force needs to streamline the process for reallocating funds and, 3) The Air Force needs to modify number of reporting requirements and policy changes to make the process more efficient and effective.<br>by Dave B. Wei, Shuoguo. "Core Acquisition Management in Remanufacturing : Current Status and Modeling Techniques." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Produktionsekonomi, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-113251.

Full text
Abstract:
Remanufacturing is an important product recovery option that benefits our sustainable development. Cores, i.e. the used products/parts, are essential resources for remanufacturing. Without cores, there will not be any remanufactured products. Challenges in the core acquisition process are mainly caused by the uncertainties of: return volume, timing and core quality. Core Acquisition Management actively attempts to reduce these uncertainties and achieve a better balance of demand and return for the remanufacturers. The aim of this dissertation is to extend the knowledge of Core Acquisition Management in remanufacturing, by investigating the current status of research and industrial practice, and developing quantitative models that assist the decision making in the core acquisition process. In the dissertation, a literature review is firstly conducted to provide an overview about the current research in Core Acquisition Management. Possible further research interests, for example, more studies based on non-hybrid remanufacturing systems and imperfect substitution assumption are suggested. Through an industrial survey carried out in a fast developing remanufacturing market - China, environmental responsibility and ethical  concerns, customer orientation and strategic advantage are identified as the most important motives for the remanufacturers, while customer recognition is their most serious barrier at present. Suggestions for further improving the Chinese remanufacturing industry from the policy-makers’ perspective are provided. After the above investigation, mathematical models are then developed to assist the acquisition decisions in two aspects: to deal with the uncertainties of return volume and timing, and to deal with the uncertainties of core quality. Acquisition decision about volume and timing is firstly studied from a product life cycle perspective, where the demands for remanufactured products and the core availability change over time. According to industrial observations, the remanufacturing cost decreases with respect to its core inventory. Using optimal control theory, core acquisition and remanufacturing decisions are derived to maximize the remanufacturer's profit. It is found that besides a simple bang-bang type control policy (either collecting as much as possible, or nothing), a special form of synchronizing policy (adjusting the core collection rate with demand rate) also exists. Furthermore, the acquisition decision depends greatly on the valuation of cores, and Real Option Valuation approaches are later used to capture the value of flexibility provided by owning cores when different aspects of remanufacturing environment are random. More specifically, the value of disposing a core earlier is investigated when the price of remanufactured product is uncertain, and the impact of the correlation between stochastic demand and return is also studied. To deal with the uncertainties of core quality, refund policies with different numbers of quality classes are studied. Under the assumption of uniformly distributed quality, analytical solutions for these refund policies are derived. Numerical examples indicate that the customers’ valuation of cores is an important factor influencing the return rates and the remanufacturer’s profit. Refund policies with a small number of quality classes could already bring major advantages. Credit refund policies (without deposits) are included for comparisons. In addition, within a game theory framework, the trade-off of two types of errors of the quality inspection in a deposit-refund policy is studied. The salvage values of different cores show great influences on the remanufacturer’s policy choices. The value of information transparency about the inspection errors are studied under different conditions. Interestingly, the customer may actually return more low quality cores when the inspection accuracy is improved.

Valente, Carlos Manuel Ferreira. "Biological control of Gonipterus platensis: current status and new possibilities." Doctoral thesis, ISA/UL, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/17514.

Full text
Abstract:
Doutoramento em Engenharia Florestal e dos Recursos Naturais - Instituto Superior de Agronomia<br>The Australian weevil Gonipterus platensis (Marelli) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), commonly known as the Eucalyptus snout-beetle, is one of the main pests of eucalypts. Because this is a non-native species, classical biological control with natural enemies from its region of origin should be a viable control strategy. The introduction of the Australian parasitoid Anaphes nitens (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) has been the main method to control the pest worldwide. However, this natural enemy is not completely effective in reducing G. platensis populations and does not avoid the occurrence of damage in several regions. Therefore, it is important to identify effective control alternatives for these areas. In this work, the economic impact of the pest and the benefit of biological control with A. nitens over the last 20 years were assessed, using Portugal as a case study. The results of the economic analysis showed that, without biological control, the losses caused by G. platensis would be at least four times higher than those occurring with partial control by A. nitens. Given the insufficient efficacy of A. nitens, the existence of other natural enemies in Australia that could be used in a classical biological control programme was evaluated. From a set of eight natural enemies identified in Tasmania, the egg parasitoid Anaphes inexpectatus Huber and Prinsloo (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) was selected for further studies. Laboratory studies comparing the biology of A. inexpectatus and A. nitens at different temperatures, a competition study between these two species, and a risk analysis for the introduction of A. inexpectatus in the Iberian Peninsula were carried out. Overall results suggest that A. inexpectatus might complement parasitism by A. nitens under field conditions without non-target effects on native fauna<br>N/A

Makitan, Vedran. "Waste tyre recycling: current status, economic analysis and process development." Thesis, Curtin University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/845.

Full text
Abstract:
The disposal of waste tyres has become an increasing problem in many countries worldwide. It is a costly issue for the whole tyre manufacturing and automobile industry, while the environmental costs over the years have reached significant levels. Current government’s regulations which ban landfilling in some developed countries such as United Kingdom have sparked an increased interest in finding new ways to dispose of waste tyres in environmentally safe manner.First part of this thesis explores the current status of the industry and identifies the most promising technologies which could provide a suitable solution for safe disposal of tyres. Once identified, the technology with the biggest potential is screened through a series of experiments which will form a basis for further process development. Finally, an in-depth economic analysis will evaluate the commercial feasibility of newly developed process and identify key recommendations for further work. After careful consideration, the pyrolysis of waste tyres was chosen for further process development and experimental research. The main goal of this work was to develop a suitable process for safe disposal of tyres and develop a unique tool which will provide a guideline on the process conditions required in order to optimize the production of a specific product. This tool, known as POT (Product Optimization Table) will play major part in identifying key operating conditions required for optimizing the overall process economics.Key findings in this report concentrate on identifying best possible process conditions required to make the process as economically favorable as possible at current market conditions. This is achieved by completing a case study together with a number of different economic models and looking at what makes the particular model economically viable. The result of this economic analysis points out a few major limitations of waste tyre pyrolysis process and dwells deeper into finding the key causes for this.Key recommendations presented at the end of this report are aimed at tyre manufacturing industry as well as relevant government bodies. Federal governments of developed nations are to play a major role in promoting the commercialization of the waste tyre pyrolysis technology. It is clear that new technology such as pyrolysis which is characterized by high risk and minimal returns is going to struggle in today’s market. Implementing the recommendations given in this report is crucial in order to encourage significant investments into technology such as pyrolysis and aid the further development and commercialization in the near future.

Madzokere, Eugene T. "The Current Status, Evolution and Spread of Arboviruses Circulating in Australia." Thesis, Griffith University, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/417227.

Full text
Abstract:
Arboviruses circulating in Australia are of clinical importance as they cause painful, often chronic musculoskeletal arthritic or fatal dengue disease. They include Ross River virus (RRV), Barmah Forest virus (BFV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and dengue virus (DENV). This dissertation assessed the seroprevalence, diversity, evolution, spread and strategies for controlling infection caused by these arboviruses. The overall aim of research presented in this dissertation was to improve public health responses such as nationwide surveillance, diagnosis, and infection control. Research undertaken in chapter 2 achieved this through systematic review and statistical synthesis of human seroprevalence data for RRV, BFV and DENV. I have shown that many factors influence the reporting of human seroprevalences for these three arboviruses. Among these factors is the choice of assay method, timeframe, and sampling strategy. I have also presented findings showing that the spatiotemporal range and median seroprevalences reported for DENV and RRV are wider and higher than those for BFV. This indicates that the risk of exposure to DENV and RRV is significantly higher and extends overseas, however this risk relates to the distribution of the transmitting vectors. My analysis highlighted that DENV presents the highest risk of exposure but its incidence in Australia is declining due to successful implementation of Wolbachia-DENV control programs which have restricted the distribution of Aedes aegypti. Most serosurveys reviewed reported a positive association between age and seroprevalence, and increasing seroprevalence with gender. However, studies reporting gender-seroprevalence data did not do statistical analysis to show the significance of outcomes. This dissertation therefore recommends streamlining, standardization and statistical synthesis of serosurveys data to better quantify risk of exposure, identify risk factors, at-risk groups/populations, associations between seroprevalence and risk factors and at-risk groups/populations. In chapter 3, I characterised the phylogenetic relationship among 193 RRV near whole genomes sourced from multiple hosts, nationwide and the Pacific, in-between 1959-2018. Eight-six of these genomes were generated in this dissertation. My assessment revealed that the four RRV genotypes display high levels of intra-genomic diversity, as I was able to characterise the virus into eight additional sublineages within genotypes G1 (n = 2), G3 (n = 5) and G4 (n = 1). This characterisation brings the total number of known RRV sublineages to 13. Only three of these sublineages (G3D, G4A and G4B) contain viruses that have circulated in Australia within the last decade. The last sampling of genotype 1 and 2 (G1 and G2) viruses was in 1976 and 1995 from Queensland and Western Australia. These viruses may no longer be in circulation within Australia. Sublineages G4A and G4B the most dominant circulating variants of RRV in recent times but they are spatially restricted to Eastern and Western Australia. My phylogenetic analysis suggests that a human traveller likely introduced RRV into the PICTs from northern rather than eastern Australia causing the explosive 1979-80 epidemic. This hypothesis builds upon the one postulated by authors of previous studies who used genomic datasets for RRV isolates sampled from a few locations and not nationwide as I did. Future studies are required to determine differences between RRV sublineages, factors driving lineage replacement, and understand the role of positively selected codon site to RRV evolution. For chapter 4, I studied the evolution, dissemination and phylogenetic relation between 87 BFV near whole genomes sourced nationwide and from Papua New Guinea from three hosts; humans, mosquitoes and a macropod, during 1974-2018. Fifty-four of these genomes were generated in this dissertation and were sampled throughout Australia. Despite the addition of these new genomes to the BFV phylogeny, results obtained indicate that BFV still consists of three genotypes with most new genomes generated from isolates sampled from northern, eastern, and Western Australia grouping in genotype G3. This dissertation reconstructed the most plausible and statistically supported dissemination pathways for BFV and identified the PNG as the most likely source of the virus. The impacts of nucleotide variation within repeat sequence elements and positive selection with the nsP1 Mtase-Gtase domain on virus replication and host range need to be investigated further. For Chapter 4 and 5, I showed that BFV and RRV have a synonymous codon usage bias toward A or C at the 3rd codon position; an abundance of CA and UG, and suppression of CG and UA dinucleotides; display coincidental and antagonistic synonymous codon usage bias with their respective mosquito and vertebrate hosts. In chapter 7, I also showed that amino acid coevolution and compositional biases are prevalent within protein coding regions belonging to RRV and BFV. I found translational selection to be the most influential evolutionary force driving RRV codon usage patterns (chapter 5). Mutational pressure was a close second. I also identified host motifs associated with RRV and BFV coevolving sites. Altogether these results indicate that many factors drive RRV and BFV evolution, among them virus and host related influences. Investigation of the clinical relevance of these findings (chapters 4, 5, and 7) is required. In chapters 6 of this dissertation, I identified five drugs [Anidulafungin (an antifungal), Fondaparinux (an anticoagulant), Rifabutin (an antibiotic), Deslanoside (a cardiac glycoside), and Temsirolimus (an antineoplastic agent)] that bind with high affinity, potency and efficiency to the RRV, BFV and CHIKV capsid. Their role as capsid inhibitors and potential treatments for RRV, BFV and CHIKV infection needs validating through functional and preclinical studies. In chapter 8, I proposed a strategy for generating integrated species distribution modelling frameworks to improve prediction of mosquito-vector habitat shifts in the future. Such modelling frameworks do not currently exist and so their generation and evaluation as an additional component to existing vector and arbovirus surveillance initiatives in Australia is required. This dissertation has addressed its research aims and hypothesis. It has demonstrated that robust nationwide surveillance, review and synthesis of seroprevalence, genomic, host, and environmental data for RRV, BFV and DENV enhances the understanding and management of arbovirus epidemics, virus characterisation and discovery, and infection control in Australia. This research has also shown that some of the factors driving alphavirus evolution, can be exploited for vaccine development. In addition, this dissertation has also presented five approved medicines with potential for repurposing as anti-alphaviral treatments. More broadly, this dissertation has generated new strategies and concepts for improving arbovirus surveillance and infection control in Australia.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>Institute for Glycomics<br>Griffith Health<br>Full Text

Abstract:
The introduction of new technologies and development of tools that facilitate everyday consumers’ life is part of the reality we are living. And whereas some innovations might be of slighter importance and distinctiveness, others might imply a significant change in the consumer behaviour, totally redefining the marketplace expectations. On the latter, and considering its high level of uncertainty, consumer acceptance plays a key role that companies must be aware of and consider in their strategy, in order to mitigate any barriers it might bring. The aim of this dissertation is to provide insights on how is the smartwatches category evolving in the Portuguese market and how is it possible to leverage its growth, by assessing in detail the current status of the market globally and locally, as well as retrieving insightful quantitative data on Portuguese consumer preferences towards this category. The methodology used concerns qualitative data retrieved from group interviews to 3 smartwatch owners and 4 non-owners, as well as quantitative data obtained through a survey conveyed to 258 valid respondents. All supported with an extensive literature review on both diffusion of innovation theory, as well as smartwatch definition, update on current status and foreseen evolution. The main findings suggest that, currently, smartwatches are at the chasm stage of the product lifecycle with a need of developing strategies to cross from the early adopter to the mainstream market. These same strategies are proposed in this dissertation, taking as base both literature insights as well as consumer quantitative contribution.<br>A introdução de novas tecnologias e desenvolvimento de ferramentas facilitadoras do dia-a-dia do consumidor fazem parte da realidade atual.

Abstract:
Telecommuting is a method of work which substitutes telecommunications and technology for the daily journey to, and home from work. Instead of travelling to a central workplace telecommuters work from home or a specially established centre close to their home. The incidence of telecommuting is increasing throughout the world. An extensive search for information on the telecommuting phenomenon reveals that most developed countries in the world have some level of participation in telecommuting. The United States of America certainly leads the way in terms of the numbers of participation and especially the information available. Information on the Australian situation has been difficult to find. It would appear that not many organizations have formal plans or policies regarding telecommuting. Much of the information available for the Australian situation is concerned with the Rural Telecentres programme that whilst not strictly developed for the purposes of telecommuting does provide facilities which can be used by organizations and telecommuters. Based on the reports available telecommuting is a popular choice for many workers. Telecommuters report benefits associated with lifestyle choices and increased work productivity due to lowered stress levels and choices about working hours. Telecommuting has also associated problems for telecommuters varying from being able to set aside a suitably equipped environment at home to concerns about isolation and missed career opportunities. For organizations the benefits also are many including increased productivity, cost savings and worker satisfaction. The problems facing organizations need careful planning to overcome. Organizations have to deal with managerial issues, potential problems associated with insurance and legal exposure, and security concerns. Organizations need to establish formal policy regarding telecommuting in order to address these concerns. Telecommuting has the potential to impact on travel and transport habits and infrastructures. It has the potential to impact positively on the environment by reducing vehicle emissions. Telecommuting, by making work location independent has the potential to affect suburban and rural communities. Issues associated with telecommuting need to be further researched in order to have the information to plan and manage this phenomenon effectively. There is difficulty obtaining information on the Australian experience, even though Australia would be ideally suited due to its geographical isolation to take advantage of the possible benefits.

Abstract:
碩士<br>淡江大學<br>數學學系碩士班<br>102<br>Current status data, which commonly arise from demographic studies, consist of a survey time and a status indicator representing whether the event time of interest has occurred by the survey time or not. In this work, our focus is on the proportional hazards regression for current status data where the status indicator may be missing but auxiliary information is always available. The motivation is a survey study of osteoporosis where the onset time of osteoporosis is current status censored and medical osteoporosis status is missing for most participants. For analyzing such data, we proposed the validation likelihood, which is derived from the likelihood function pertaining to the validation subsample where the current status data are fully observed. The real application to the osteoporosis survey data and simulation studies reveal that the validation likelihood method can avoid the bias resulted from the complete case analysis, and is more efficient than the inverse probability weighting analysis.

In this thesis, we propose an inverse probability weighted method for analyzing current status data where the status indicator is subject to missing but a surrogate for status indictor is available instead. Our method is based on the proportional hazards survival model and missing at random mechanism. Simulation results confirm that the proposed estimator is asymptotically normal and it removes the bias resulted from the naive “complete case” analysis discarding subjects with missing value. Besides we illustrate our proposal by analyzing an osteoporosis survey data.

博士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>特殊教育研究所<br>91<br>Current Status and Effectiveness of Creativity Teaching In Elementary Gifted Classes Shiou-Mei Chan ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to investigate current status of creativity teaching in Taiwan elementary gifted classes; (2) to investigate the cognitive and affective creativity performance of gifted students from those gifted classes; (3) to explore the relationships between the status of creativity teaching and gifted students’ creativity performance. The Inventory of Creativity Teaching was administered to 18 teachers of elementary gifted classes; while other four instruments, including Verbal Test of Creative Thinking, Test of Problem-Solving, Chinese Form of Williams Test of Creativity, and Scale of Self-Actualization for Adolescents, were administered to 212 grade 6 gifted students from those classes. The major findings of this study were as the following: I. The current status of creativity teaching in Taiwan elementary gifted classes: (1) The majority of the gifted class teachers had possessed proper basic concepts about creativity teaching, but still not enough in advanced knowledge and instructional skills. (2) The main difficulty of implementing creativity teaching came from environmental obstacles; (3) Teachers majored in special education showed better knowledge base of creativity teaching than those with other majors. (4) Gifted resource rooms showed higher level of teachers’ knowledge base of creativity teaching, teachers’ creative personality traits, curriculum and instructional practice of creativity teaching, and instructional situation fostering creative thinking than self-contained classes. II. The performance of gifted students: Students from gifted classes showed higher level of creative thinking ability, problem-solving ability and creative characteristics than that of those from regular classes. III. The relationships between the status of creativity teaching and gifted students’ creativity performance: (1) There was no significant difference between gifted classes with teachers scoring higher on knowledge base and those scoring lower on students’ creativity performance. (2) Gifted class students with teachers scoring higher in personality traits demonstrated higher level of creative thinking ability than those with teachers scoring lower in personality traits; (3) There was no significant difference between different gifted classes with different practices of creative teaching on students’ creativity performance. (4) Students from gifted classes with higher level of school and social environmental conditions fostering creative thinking showed better creative thinking ability and problem-solving ability than those from lower level of school and social environmental conditions; there was no significant difference between different gifted classes with different instructional situation on students’ creativity performance. (5) There was no significant difference between gifted classes with special education major teachers and those with other majors on students’ creativity performance. (6) Students from self-contained gifted classes showed higher level of creative thinking ability and self-actualization than those from resource rooms. (7) In conclusion, although environmental conditions and teachers’ professional background are both crucial factors on gifted students’ creativity performance, the former seems to be more important than the latter; the self-contained grouping practice seems to be more beneficial to gifted students’ creativity development than the resource room program. Based on the above research findings, some suggestions for gifted education and future studies are made. Keywords: creativity teaching, creative thinking, problem-solving ability, creative characteristics, self-actualization, creativity performance, gifted education, ability grouping.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中原大學<br>應用數學研究所<br>95<br>We mainly discuss the Bayesian survival analysis for current status data in this paper.By using Bayes method to estimate distribution function, we propose a model in Bernsteinpolynomial. It is appropriate to be a model of distribution function because Bernsteinpolynomial can be used to describe continuous function and distribution functions also havecontinuous property. In the theory of Frequency (MLE school of thought),they considerthe highest frequency location to estimate parameters and use nonparameter maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) method to estimate distribution function in their opinions. According to this method, we only get a step function to estimate the location of the real function. Hence our research will get a smooth function by Bayesian method and compare with them. It shows that Bernstein polynomials can be close to any continuous functions by Bernstein-Weierstrass theorem. Because distribution functions used here express the survival time of cumulative distribution function and it be continuously nonnegatively and increasing functions. Under the consideration of the geometric property, we can use Bernstein polynomial to describe likelihood function in Bernstein prior process. Sometimes we also consider that the distribution functions have the geometric property of the sigmoidal or convex character. It is easy for a Bernstein model to generate a smooth function to be close to real functions. Hence it plays an important role in the current Bayesian theory and we still can show good results in chemistry application for predicting the regression curve of interest. This paper be organized as follows : Chapter 2 introduce the relations between polynomial coefficients and graphic structures , we discuss some problems about counter statements. Then use Bernstein polynomial to construct the Bayesian survival model and talk about probability space and support of the prior. Chapter 3 derive the Bayesian estimator by the model of distribution function. Chapter 4 introduce two algorithms : Independent M-H method and M-H Green method. Chapter 5 is simulation study , we will compare Bayesian estimators with NPMLE method. Chapter 6 be the conclusion and suggestion.

This article aims to analyze, from the perspective of the digitization technology, the interrelations between Taiwan aboriginal music of ethnomusicology, field investigation from Aboriginal communities, and the dissemination of media, and we also look into the importance of the role of the digital archive of Taiwan aboriginal music. The sources of Taiwan Aboriginal music archive are mainly from the two historical periods of Japanese Colonized Taiwan during 1895~1943 and the folksong collective movement. As time elapses, some of that information is hardly to prove its accuracy. However, the records composed by the scholars in field investigations in Aboriginal communities can be consulted to assess the data’s accuracy. Once the accuracy is established, we can probe into Taiwan aboriginal music through its vocal, musical instruments and traditional rituals. The result could guide the construction of Taiwan Aboriginal music archive. 碩士<br>淡江大學<br>數學學系碩士班<br>100<br>While there is considerable work on covariate measurement error problem for right-censored survival data, regression analysis for current status data with mismeasured covariate has just started recently. In this thesis, we consider the conditional score approach of Wen and Chen (2012) for the analysis of errors-in-variable current status data. Distinct from Wen and Chen (2012), we employ a sieve method to approximate the baseline odds ratio function in the proportional odds model. Our proposal has advantages that the computation of conditional score estimates is more efficient and the variance estimation of regression parameter estimate is exempted from estimating the distribution of censoring time. The proposed method is evaluated through simulation studies and illustrated with a real data.

碩士<br>大同大學<br>通訊工程研究所<br>101<br>Lots of plugged-in but idle adapters in a home circuit result in about 10% energy waste. The total energy waste of standby power estimated by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) is 124 TWh. In order to know the energy waste by standby adapter, status identification of plugged-in adapters is necessary. Studies indicate that distinguishing an status of adapters from others is to recognize its load pattern; the load pattern identification requires history data. This paper finds that the pattern of current varies with inrush current of different adapter status are distinct and it is possible to use inrush current for adapter status identification. With a full deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), every electric customer is equipped with a smart meter. This meter is capable of making a high frequency measurement, having a data storage and communicating with utilities. Bennett, C. and Highfill, D. indicate that a smart meter also acts as a home console for monitoring energy consumption. This paper proposes us an algorithm that utilizes the consideration platform in embedded within smart meters to identify the specific adapter in a home circuit.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>科技法律研究所<br>105<br>Since the environmental pollution may cause injury to people who lived in the polluted geographic area, it would be a serious issue in modern society. Hence, this thesis intended to focus on the civil litigation of environmental torts in Taiwan. This research had conducted an analysis upon the current cases in Taiwan, and emphasized the judgment on RCA Pollution Case and the Tainan An-Shuen Pollution Case. This thesis discussed the various legal issues throughout the whole litigation, including the issues of liability, the amount of relief, the restrictive prescription and different paths to initiate the action. The cases showed that the claims varied from the scales of the pollution. The claims of personal injury often be founded in mass torts, while the small size pollution torts often claimed for property damage only. Furthermore, the judgments in different cases showed disagreements on common issues, such as the way to determinate causation or the amount of damage. This thesis concluded that the courts should determinate the amount of damage in an explicit way with formula or statistical evidence, and determinate the damage with aggregate assessment under the Article 44-1 of Code of Civil Procedure. In respect of the characteristics of complexity of environmental torts, such as the difficulties of proof, or latent disease caused by pollution, restrictive prescription should be extended in the Environmental Law for mass environmental torts.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>環境規劃與管理研究所<br>94<br>During the 60 and 70s’, government sector plays a crucial role in regulating various environmental and labor mandates for enterprises. However, these kinds of “command & control” and “end-of- pipe” approaches have been shifted to “proactive” and “voluntary” ways throughout 80 and 90s’. Interestingly, when confronting with government and public need, some leading enterprises nowadays instead of escaping from their responsibilities, but proceed in advancing as a good corporate corporate social responsibility(CSR) performer with their stakeholders in building trust. In the beginning, enterprises lack of which CSR guidance and standard should be embraced. Fortunately, recent years they were widen organizations and initiatives had concerted action to construct universal CSR guidance, notably what we best known such as “OECD Guideline for Multinational Enterprises”, “Global Reporting Initiative”, and the on-going development of Strategic Advisory Group for CSR, ISO. Besides the literatures review of correlated topics, in the present study, particular in CSR’s questionnaire formatting, the OECD guideline was adopted. The study purposed to testify the CSR’s notion of Taiwanese’s CEOs and the development of CSR of nation in general. Several factors which influence of the CSR’s perception were identified. Descriptive analysis of mean showed in which item that our CEOs had chose as their proper sequence. For example, four out of nine aspects of OECD guidelines, such as employment and industrial relations, combating bribery, consumer interest and taxation, were the top listed of CEOs’ awareness, willingness of implementation, and achievements. In helping government to specify strategic implementation plan for CSR improvement, One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc analysis (Scheffe, LSD) were organized in correlation with the nature of enterprises (such as category, operation year, work force, sales) and the multitude level of CEOs’ awareness, willingness of implementation, and achievements.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中華醫事科技大學<br>醫學檢驗生物技術系碩士班<br>107<br>Abstract Dengue fever has always been an infectious disease that is very troubled by tropical countries. Because of the symptoms of early simple fever, it is not easy for medical personnel to judge dengue fever in the first time. Since the onset of diagnosis and dengue fever has been quite contagious, it has taken measures to shorten the detection time of dengue fever are necessary. The internationalized society, which is the most connected Southeast Asian country with Taiwan, is a high-risk endemic area for dengue fever. However, with Taiwanese tourism and exchanges, dengue fever has also been strengthened, and Southeast Asian countries are mostly in developing countries. Compared with Taiwan's sound medical and health systems, their health standards still have room for improvement. From the most basic water-removing containers to the follow-up of people who enter and exit Southeast Asian countries, the most effective way is to implement the national concept of dengue fever prevention and to formulate relevant policies to rectify and manage environmental sanitation, which is the most effective way to eliminate dengue fever.

Huang, Hong-Wei, and 黃泓維. "Current status and quality of sustainability reporting in Taiwan." Thesis, 2014. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/jyzk52.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>環境工程與管理研究所<br>102<br>As a tool for communicating with stakeholders for sustainability performance, corporate sustainability reporting (CSR) has become a worldwide trend in the last decade. Surveys related to sustainability reporting are mainly focused on overall global markets and are rarely found in specific emerging countries. This paper investigated 101 Taiwanese companies to study their current status, the barriers they encountered, their driving force for publishing sustainability reports, and the role of third-party assurance for sustainability reporting. The situations of the companies with published and unpublished reports were compared and analyzed. An evaluation framework based on the materiality and stakeholder inclusiveness of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines was also developed to assess the quality of two “best” sustainability reports published by Taiwanese companies and to compare it with the sustainability reports published by international leading companies. Results of the study showed that the GRI Guideline was applied widely. Only 25% of the reports were compiled by multi-disciplinary/cross-functional team (such as CSR or sustainability taskforce) and only two-thirds of the reports were verified by a third party. The main reason for third-party assurance was to “add credibility to the information disclosed” and “improved confidence in information used for management.” The two most important driving forces for Taiwanese companies in publishing sustainability reports were “tone from top” and “corporate reputation and ethics.” However, “the pressure from employees” was not an important driving force, which is obviously different from previous investigations. The results also showed that “no perceived benefit” and “sustainability reporting is not mandatory” were the main barriers that conform to previous studies. The findings indicate that corporate size is a key factor that affects the adoption of sustainability reporting of corporations. A multi-disciplinary team will be formed by larger companies in Taiwan. “Cost” is also an important barrier for smaller companies, which may lead to their lack of knowledge about sustainability reporting. The completeness of reporting in Taiwanese companies and international leading companies is similar. However, Taiwanese companies may need to put more emphasis on materiality, particularly on the connectivity of the material aspect with performance and material target setting.
