This research document presents data on a curriculum change process developed to define common formation references to undergraduate courses of the same formative area in a private University. It aimed at identifying the aspects which characterize such processes, developed in order to foster positive results despite the challenge to acquiesce to the demands of official documents, the Institution s financial sustainability, and the improvement of academic formation processes. To unveil this research object, surveys were carried out in order to theoretically subsidize the construction of the research problem and of a theoretical framework on curriculum innovation, curriculum, subjects and their development process, environment, group, and educational management and to practically subsidize the process of understanding how the curriculum change process to be described and analyzed went about, as well as the identification of some of the obtained results and of the aspects which characterized the process. In the course of field data collection, it was possible to identify that the studied process was developed with the full participation of the IESP s internal Community and that the process steps were marked by moments of collective construction directed to the establishment of operational modes and guidelines which would guide changes compatible with the culture and the concrete conditions of the institution and to the establishment and/or maintenance of a favorable institutional environment to implement such changes. Positive results were identified with the development of the process in the data obtained from the documental analysis and the interviews with the course coordinators the research subjects. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to conclude that there are aspects of curriculum change processes that are configured as recommended to characterize them, which are a set of guiding principles to gauge the development of these processes regarding its general design, the understanding of what curriculum is, the way the research participants, the ones subject to change, are to be considered, and the aspects related to environment and group functionality , to educational management and to the manner in which the activities linked to the process of curriculum change are to be developed

Abstract:
This is a master’s thesis that presents a meaning production about curricular documents that guide Porto Alegre’s Municipal Education Network (RME). Its theoretical basis comes from philosophical formulations of Ludwig Wittgenstein, which served as discussions limits about meanings of mathematical objects suggested by RME Curriculum Frameworks. In the analytical course of our work, we have articulated language games notions with (normative) notion of practice, by the “follow rules” link. In a second moment, we have proposed a discussion about mathematical propositions character, marking differences between grammatical and empirical propositions. Thus, we were able to analyze and even consider suggestions of the RME Curriculum Frameworks, highlighting some essentialist inclinations of these documents and realizing counterpoints, supported by Wittgensteinian philosophy. Therefore, in order to this exercise to be possible, we have begun with an apprehension/familiarity of philosophical notions proposed by L. Wittgenstein in the second phase of his thinking. Afterwards, we have analyzed RME’s Curricular References, with the intention of thinking about what we call curricular practices and which ones are carried out in the RME institutions, orienting and normalizing the ways of teachers and students being/acting. So, we believe that this work, far from being a pretentious attempt to offer any truth, it shed light on significations questions’ discussions, overlapping them with methodological thinking.

The Reference Curriculum for Degree Courses in Computer Science and Computer Engineering (RC) is a document developed by the Brazilian Computer Society that aims to describe a set of information related to computing education in Brazil. The body of knowledge, a part of RC that describles the knowledge that should be teached to a student during the learning Process, can be useful on the Curricular Planning process, however, unlike the curriculum structure created, which describes relations between disciplines, the knowledge described on the Reference Curriculum only shows hierarchical relations between different levels of this knowledge. To this situation, in this dissertation is proposed an approach that aimed orchestrating the knowledge described on granularity “Subject” of RC,called, in this dissertation,“Knowledge Categories”. For this, the approachis based on the bottom-up and identifies possible relationships between the 57 Knowledge Categories induced from the disciplines of graduate courses and their prerequisites relationships, to thereby identify the Dependence Degree Between Categories (GDep) and Category Occurrence Degree (GOc) relevants for the process of curriculum planning and evaluation. For evaluate approach, ion purposes a case study was conducted involving 474 disciplines from 7 under graduate courses. It was possible to observe the measurement of GRel and GOC of the57 Knowledge Categories from RC. In addition, the application were verified of the metrics identified in the planning processand evaluation of curriculum structures that,on the context observe, showed results that confirmed the use of suchmetrics for a imsproposed.

Abstract:
During the 1980s and 1990s, in Brazil, the results of the psychogenetic research on the acquisition of writing, performed by Emilia Ferreiro and colleagues, were disclosed. The dissemination of this research results impacted the brazilian education, in a way that there was a review of the ways of thinking about the children literacy process. The psychogenesis of writing, by which the work of Emilia Ferreiro is known, was presented as a \"conceptual revolution\" on the literacy researches field, as it pointed out to the fact that learning to read and write is a conceptual learning, and not the acquisition of a technique of encoding and decoding writing, as literacy was, until then, treated. In São Paulo, the psychogenesis of writing was used as a theoretical framework for the development of the curriculum reference documents, thus basing considerations on teaching and learning the Portuguese Language in its early stages. Thus, the constituent terms of psychogenesis of writing transited between the spaces of academic productions, official and pedagogic, which leads us to consider that, while transiting through these spaces, the psychogenetics conception of the acquisition of written language went through discursive developments, becoming what, in the field of teaching practices is known as constructivism. In this paper, we investigate the process of the constitution of constructivism as a pedagogical discourse, presented as a conceptual revolution for the reconfiguration of the ways in which the discussions on literacy were organized until then, as well as the reconfiguration of the work of the literacy teacher.

Chamisa, Shylet. "Trends in home economics education : an analysis of curriculum documents in Zimbabwe and South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8057.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyse and discuss current trends in the construction and development of home economics subjects in South Africa and Zimbabwe, trends that reflect the direction that home economics is taking in the new millennium. Practical/pre-vocational subjects were introduced in secondary school curriculum for both general education and labour market reasons, that is, for the preparation of pupils to 'enter employment' and/or for 'self employment'. Over the years national education planners have debated over the future of practical/vocational subjects on the school curriculum. Many writers note that the concern of these groups is related to the challenges of technology and globalisation and general concerns for youth employment and poverty alleviation. As a result, far from phasing out from the secondary school education scene in Africa, technical and vocational subjects (correctly termed pre-vocational education) are offered along with academic subjects. They have undergone change in an attempt to better meet the needs of the labour market and the challenges that technology and globalization bring.

Abstract:
The field study based on a questionnaire, classroom observation and a range of interviews with government officials and teachers confirmed a deeply negative attitude towards the way SiSwati is being taught, resulting in negative attitudes towards the language itself. Other findings pointed to a resistance to the cultural content of the curriculum as dictated by the power elite in Swaziland, the outdated emphasis on linguistics rather than sociolinguistics as an informing discipline and the absence of social and negative literacy skills embedded in subject content. The field study reflects an overall climate of despondency governing the teaching and learning context.

Nthulanyane, Malefa Regina. "Teacher receptivity of an integrated curriculum with special reference to the foundation phase of curriculum 2005." Thesis, University of Port Elizabeth, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/378.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate teacher receptivity of a new curriculum, in particular, the new integrated curriculum of South Africa. As the New Revised national curriculum Statement is starting to be operational this year, Curriculum 2005 was used as a model of an integrated curriculum in this study. The study focused on the following sub-problems: the meaning of an integrated curriculum; teacher receptivity of an integrated curriculum; and the extent to which teachers are receptive of the new integrated foundation phase curriculum. The review of relevant literature provided a conceptual framework for the study. Six dimensions of a curriculum that were regarded as critical in classroom practice for practicing teachers were identified and used to describe an integrated curriculum. These were: platform, learning outcomes, content, instructional materials, teaching and learning strategies and assessment. The conceptual framework for teacher receptivity was also identified by means of review of relevant literature. Teacher receptivity was conceptualised as comprising of attitudes and behavioral intentions. The empirical part of the study was undertaken to determine the attitudes of teachers towards an integrated foundation phase curriculum and the extent to which foundation phase teachers were receptive of the new curriculum. The sample for the empirical part of the study included 63 foundation phase teachers randomly selected from 21 schools in Herschel District. The schools were randomly selected from 3 zones which had been randomly selected from 7 zones that make up Hershel Educational District in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Empirical data on teachers’ attitudes towards an integrated curriculum indicated that the majority of teachers were viewed the curriculum in an extremely positive light/somewhat positive light. There were responses which indicated that some teachers regarded the curriculum as complicated, restrictive, and idealistic. This situation is highlighted in their responses to the semantic differential on the attitude objects of the curriculum. Data on teacher receptivity indicated positive responses but vi there were some area of concern such as, for example, support from the district manager, school and the community. Data indicated that teachers were not so positive abut learning outcomes and assessment as a basis of teaching an integrated curriculum. Based on the empirical part of the study, conclusions and recommendations were made.

This research deals with the teaching of contents related to Knowledge rural present in the prescribed curriculum of a Bachelor of backwoods of Pernambuco Rural Education in the light of Educational Paradigms stations to rural areas. We take as a theoretical lens the Post-Colonial Latin American Studies (QUIJANO, 2005, 2007; Grosfoguel 2007; MIGNOLO, 2005, 2011; Sartorello, 2009; Walsh, 2005, 2007). In this research, we understand the field as a territory material and immaterial a living space in which develops social, cultural, political, epistemic and educational (FERNANDES, 2004). Faced with this, our main objective was to understand what and how teaching contents related to Knowledge rural in the curriculum prescribed for a Bachelor of Education of Pernambuco hinterland are treated. Specifically, we aim to: a) identify and features in the curriculum prescribed with respect to: Society, Education, Training Course, Curriculum and subjects present in the curriculum proposal of that Degree in Rural Education in the light of Educational Paradigms; b) identify and categorize the Teaching Contents related to Knowledge Campesinos present in that curriculum course in the light of Educational Paradigms; c) identify and categorize the place, time and numbers of the said Contents Teaching the light of Educational Paradigms. Methodologically based on the approach of qualitative research in using the documentary research. Our empirical field is a Bachelor of backwoods of Pernambuco Rural Education and the sources of our research are: Curricular Design Course and the Disciplines Job Plans. We also made use of semi-structured interview with the coordinators of the course, which are identified as research subjects. As data production and collection techniques we use the Content Analysis via Thematic Analysis (Bardin, 1977; DITCH, 1990). The analyzes show that with regard to Society, Education, Training Course, Curriculum and Subject, there is a direct approach to the Paradigm of Critical Field Education, however, we realize that there is still colonial manifestations that allow us to infer that the Course researched degree in Rural Education inhabits the Border Area denoting Colonial and decolonial actions. This course was possible to identify a content set that deal with the Knowledge of the Earth, Knowledge and Knowledge of Social-Cultural Organization. Contents dealing with Knowledge rural in LEDC are treated in place of the kind of Pedagogical Disciplines and Common Core, being arranged on a curricular time taken in relation to the hegemonic contents. As for the references that guide such content realize that is the kind legal and Epistemic that unfold in a general discussion on education and Specific on Rural Education.

Abstract:
In view of the significance of engineering and of technological innovators or engineers in solving development problems as well as creating others, the engineering curriculum has not adequately responded to the requirements of the engineering function within modern world conditions. These conditions have been rapidly and continually changing and the problems have been changing and growing in complexity. Such an inadequate response has been recognised and attempts for reforming the engineering curriculum have been made. The attempts have manifested a shift away from the traditional model of the curriculum. Still, the overall response of the engineering curriculum to the demands of multidimensionality and complexity of development problems remains inadequate; the purely technical dimension of the engineering curriculum has been the main focus, while the non-technical dimensions have been neglected. Instead of responding by bending under pressure from immediate circumstances, or by continuing to be guided by earlier views which may have served their specific times and conditions, appropriate views on man, society and knowledge are needed to guide the reform of the engineering curriculum. Pragmatist views, represented by Dewey's, are suggested as a potential guide for the needed reform. For successful implementation of the reform of the engineering curriculum under pragmatist guidance in the Saudi Arabian context, resources and obstacles are identified. Islam, the adopted religion in the Saudi context, may seem to represent an obstacle. Contrarily, in spite of fundamental differences between Islam and pragmatist views, Islam can, in fact, accommodate the suggested pragmatist views for guiding the reform of the engineering curriculum in the Saudi context.

Abstract:
Working on Environmental Education with Children can become outstanding when this work is different in relation to what we are presented on the curriculum and on school practices, where it is restricted on being sporadic, superficial and misunderstood, underestimating our subject the children , who are considered unable to understand deeper concepts, and denying any possibility of self dialogue or reflection upon the information that surrounds them. The curriculum is only focusing the celebration of important dates, which are restricted to one day, without any deeper debate concerning knowledge construction on the huge variety of environmental realities. Once having the problem, the challenge of working on environmental questions on Children Education was faced through action-investigation, using didactics material produced by the project Projeto de Conservação e Utilização Sustentável da Diversidade Biológica Brasileira (PROBIO), due to help on students awareness, families and communities concerning the supportive usage and conservation of the Brazilian Biodiversity.

Abstract:
This study is designed to seek evidence regarding the present geography curriculum in Iran, with reference to Tehran, in order to identify and analyze its past and on going development. The main objectives of the study were: - To investigate the consequences for geography teaching in Iran, with reference to Tehran. - To investigate the effectiveness of curriculum aspects concerning aims and objectives, content, teaching methods, and pupils' assessment. In order to achieve the above objectives, four different approaches were adopted in the study: 1. a questionnaire for 121 geography teachers in Tehran; 2. a questionnaire for 1000 secondary school pupils in Tehran; 3. interviews with geography teachers and the Iranian officials in Tehran; 4. finally a geography textbook analysis. Overall, the study showed that: 1. in terms of aims and objectives, despite the recent effort, rewriting of them, necessary actions required especially to implement them; 2. although the content of geography has been enriched since the Revolution, it requires a comprehensive review rather than partial modifications. Also despite some improvement in geography textbooks, further improvement is required; 3. geography teaching methods are based on exposition and mainly are teacher-centred, while child-centred methods have been relatively ignored. 4. the Iranian geography curriculum is very much examination-oriented and the present pupils' assessment does not fully reflect the aims and objectives of the curriculum.

Abstract:
The thesis reports and analyses findings from an investigation into Cypriot teachers' perceptions of national policy for curriculum reform in primary schools, with special reference to teaching and assessment in Mathematics. Questionnaires were sent to three samples of teachers: a 10% sample of Cypriot teachers randomly selected from the total population (n=257); all teachers in five primary schools (n=51); all beginning teachers (n=123). The latter sample was compared with a sample of English beginning teachers. A response rate of 70% was obtained and statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS-X. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 teachers, mainly as a form of triangulation. There were seven main findings. First, curricular purposes concerning pupils' ability to solve investigations, and to gain mathematical knowledge were seen as equally important; and ability to talk about Mathematics the least important. Second, formative purposes of assessment were accorded most, and summative purposes least importance. Third, teachers agreed with active pedagogy and with the application of mathematics to other subjects. Fourth, they conceptualised assessment as natural part of teaching but paradoxically favoured formally structured techniques of assessment. Fifth, classroom organisation rarely met policy requirements for a balance of whole class, group and individual activities. Sixth, cluster analysis revealed the absence of a collective professional view of the process of curriculum change. Seventh, statistically significant differences in perceptions were associated with characteristics of the class taught but there was no whole school effect. Other influences on perceptions were professional and political. Implications for the implementation of curriculum policy in Cyprus are discussed drawing on the theories of Nias and Fullan. It is argued that a revised policy, emphasising teacher participation and school-based development is needed and this would require a new conception of teacher professionalism. A heuristic model of curriculum change and a short term strategy for curriculum change are outlined.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate problems of curriculum planning and development in geography, with special reference to the curriculum of Portuguese secondary schools. It identifies the theoretical and practical influences which affect curriculum planning and development and gives some suggestions and a rationale that can be employed to overcome these problems. The theoretical bases of curriculum planning and development in general and of curriculum planning and development in geography are examined first. Following this theoretical backg round, the evolution of geographical education over the past 150 years is indicated in order to contribute to an awareness of curriculum change in the past. In order to obtain evidence of the present main problems concerning geographical education and to collect opinions on how to improve it, questionnaires were sent to geography teachers in secondary schools. Questionnaires were also sent to 9th year and 12th year students respectively, (approximately 15 and 18 year old) to ascertain their views about geography and its teaching. To discover how the process of curriculum planning takes place at school level, interviews were undertaken with the heads of geography departments of eight secondary schools which differ in several aspects, e.g. in location, in type, in size, in number of geography teachers and their qualifications and in the availability of teaching resources, among others. In orderto find out how the process of curriculum planning has evolved since the revolution of April 25th 1974 interviews were conducted with curriculum planners. Lastly, strategies and conditions needed for curriculum development in geography are put forward. The essential conclusions of this investigation are that in orderto improvethe delivery of the geography curriculum in Portugal it will be necessary: first, to develop the links between the central, regional and school authorities; secondly, to raise the level of qualifications of teachers of geography; and thirdly, to increase the resources available to schools' geography departments. Consequently the quality of delivery of the curriculum will depend on teachers having expertise in schoolbased curriculum development. The possible ways of extending this study are also discussed in the final chapter.

Abstract:

The study focuses on the teaching of translation in university foreign-language curricula. After considering the recent scholarly reappraisal of this language-teaching tool and its attendant reconceptualization, it examines some of the changes and challenges that have ensued at the level of curriculum organization and classroom instruction. The identification of some elements of complexity, based on a problem of conceptualization, leads in to a discussion of possible ways in which the deriving tensions could be addressed and maybe mitigated, i.e. pedagogies that capitalize on the transferability potential of the learning emerging from translation activities. Special emphasis is placed on the concept of “transferable generic skills” and their relation to vocational teaching approaches. In light of these premises, the study sets out to investigate how the teaching community conceptualizes and uses translation, what reasons inform the choice not to incorporate it, and whether there is awareness of, and openness to, notions of transferable skills. Data are gathered through a follow-up analysis of the international survey Translation and Language Learning, carried out in 2012-2013 for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation. The findings indicate a qualitatively broad variation in the understandings of translation and its pedagogical functions alongside a quantitatively significant concentration of data around a single conception/use, i.e. that of formalistic, contrastive language exercise. Data analysis also suggests the persistence of a latent antagonism, largely informed by adherence to monolingual methodologies and narrow, often misconceived translation concepts. Explicit awareness of transferability issues is modest. Implications of these findings for future action and research are discussed.

Abstract:
Research performed since the twenties in the field of didactics of foreign languages, helped the rise of a certain audience with specific requests in professional language. That gave rise to a domain, which is composed of an important diversity of contexts and publics called "French for Specific Purposes". Teachers and researchers are brought to create specific methodological approach, to help this audience gain specific linguistic skills. This thesis aims at bringing elements of answer to the students of the syrian scientific colleges, particularly to those of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Our purpose is to identify the real needs of the latter, taking into account peculiarities of their domain and to conceive teacher-training frame of reference allowing them to develop oral and written comprehension and expression skills

Abstract:
The research started from the assumption that the point of including art in education is to develop children's understanding of this subject. Its purpose is to consider certain theoretical and practical contexts through which this aim might be helped or hindered. The thesis examines the proposition that in order for young children to begin to understand and develop their work in art it Is necessary for their teacher to be able to put them in touch with the basic structure (formal elements, materials and processes) of the subject. How this might be achieved in practice is analysed in a report of a project carried out by the author with her class of children aged five and six years. Its purpose was to find out whether the children could talk about formal elements, materials and process as well as the content of their pictures in a way which would develop their understanding of art. Teaching and learning were guided by the twentieth century concept of art which emphasises its formal elements and physicality. Analysis of five activities and of individual children's work shows that unexpected developments in picture-making occurred; that the children's activities helped them to talk about a picture by H. Matisse (1953); and that some children had developed an understanding of their work in art. On this basis it is found that 1) it is possible to put young children in touch with the structure of the subject in a way which develops their understanding; 2) children can be helped to appreciate the work of others through an understanding of their own work. This finding may be useful to other teachers in providing a practical link between Ati and At2 of Art in the National Curriculum.

Chan, Monnie Yuet-hung. "Hong Kong secondary schools music education with special reference to changing curricula in the years of 1998 to 2009." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5342.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores issues relating to the secondary music examination curriculum in Hong Kong between 1998 and 2009. In 1998 the number of candidates taking ABRSM and TCL examinations was 50406 but HKALE and HKCEE, the candidate numbers were 18 at AL and 231 at CE level. This thesis seeks to explore reasons for the lack of interest and uptake by secondary school students of government music exams through an examination of the curriculum and proposed changes to it during the last 10 years. This research, therefore, arises to study music education 1998 – 2009 and in particular to focus on proposed “developments” for 2002 and 2005 both of which were rejected. By 2010 the AL examination had been cancelled and the CE remains unchanged. The thesis explores the marginalization of an area of the school curriculum. After a brief introduction to the research, chapter 2 gives a broad overview of education policy and curriculum development in secondary school music education in Hong Kong. Seven Education Commission Reports concerned with music education policy in secondary schools are examined. Chapter 3 is a more detailed study of music education and the music curriculum in secondary schools in Hong Kong in which some significant studies and surveys in the field are studied. The S.S.M.C. report provides a useful and supporting back up to avoid any double work. In addition, the way in which music is covered and operated in the curriculum in different cultural environments (using the examples of England and Wales and Singapore) has been examined. Chapter 4 discusses the issues raised from the research. Based on the information found, one of the main issues for this research is that the secondary school music teacher has the key role for a successful revolution in Hong Kong secondary music education. Chapter 5 considers the hypotheses and methodologies. The research methods used are direct description with a simple statistical approach. Research methods used for this study include 5-Likert scales, summarizing content and constant comparative analysis. Furthermore, some tables, figures and documents are provided as a supplement. Chapter 6 examines the data analysis. The results of this research are compared to the results of related researches in section 3.3. Feedback from target secondary school principals, music teachers, students and representative persons in the field is collected and reported. Chapter 7 is the analysis of findings and discussion. The key finding is that most of the secondary school music teachers in Hong Kong do not encourage their students to take the HKCEE / HKALE music examinations. This study finds that, as music is neglected at schools, it is reaching a weak position in Hong Kong secondary schools, and its curriculum is threatened. Chapter 8 gives the conclusions, recommendations for further research, limitations and significance of the study in terms of the principal theme. This is the first time any study has investigated the problem concerning secondary school music education in Hong Kong during the years from 1998 to 2009. The answer to the final question raised from this research, whether the Arts Education curriculum being introduced in 2005 is a good substitute for the subject, is still uncertain at this moment.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 387-404. South Australia is unique amongst Australian States insofar as s82(1) of the Education Act 1972 vests the director-General of Education, rather than the minister of Education, with de jure control of State school curriculum. This locus of control is at odds with the well-established democratic convention that Ministers control the directive policy components of their portfolios. This thesis describes how this mode of curriculum control came about, its nature and implications, and mounts a challenge to its legitimacy. (abstract)

Abstract:
Educational leadership and management is a very wide field of study with interdependent components that should form a chain reaction in order to bring about effective management. This study attempts to investigate planning in schools which is one of the educational leadership and management components or functions. Very little research work has been done on educational planning in the Ciskei schools. This is a shortcoming since the number of secondary schools has mushroomed in the late twentieth century. The Ciskei educational managers and parents need to know and take note of the possible situations in the various schools. This is opportune time, particularly that recent events, i.e. students' demands and strikes, are drawing parents closer to the education of their children. The researcher's experience of inspecting school administration since 1990 has reinforced his conviction that the managerial teams in the Ciskei secondary schools have little knowledge of management, and of planning in particular. Although the investigation is into secondary school administration, it is also pertinent to primary school planning. Management, i.e. school year-planning, control of work, staff development, appointment of teachers, policy governing students and teachers are discussed at length . Joint planning, i.e. a participative or consultative approach, and advance planning, are investigated in relation to the school year-programme. The existence of statutory bodies in the various schools is assessed in order to test parents' involvement in the education of their children. School tours are discussed in relation to students' involvement in the school activities. The analysis of the results highlights areas that require attention, and the recommendations given address the controversial issues in planning in the various schools.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the powers exercised by government as it attempts to transform educational policy into practice. It originates from an interest in the TVEI programme, administered for the government by the Manpower Services Commission during the 1980s. The engine for this rapid modification of existing practice in both school and college appeared to relate to the device of funding on the basis of contract. This observation led to an attempt to analyze the range of powers available to central government and others. This required both a historical and a comparative analysis, together with a concern for the way in which human behaviour is shaped by specific power relationships. Chapter 1 sets out the origins of the study and establishes a model of the "bases of power". Thereafter, Chapters 2 and 3 consider the extent to which government has held or extended its grip on these different types of power during this century. Chapter 2 deals separately with 1918 to 1939, and 1944 to 1974. After reviewing the model in the light of those accounts, Chapter 3 examines the period from 1974 to the Education Reform Act of 1988. Having established the increasing significance of "remunerative" power based on categorical or contractual funding, Chapter 4 argues that such strategies contain certain key elements : namely, criteria, bid, contract, monitoring, evaluation and replication. Using this analytical tool, Chapters 5, 6 and 7 examine three illustrative cases, starting with the TVEI programme from which the enquiry originated. Chapter 6 examines the impact of a similar funding strategy within the reorganisation of INSET, while Chapter 7 draws on a detailed research study of similar initiatives within higher education. In Chapter 8 an attempt is made to draw together the argument, to relate it to the ever expanding use of contract across the range of social policy and, finally, to consider the implications of this undeniably efficient mode of policy implementation for an avowedly democratic society.

Abstract:
The thesis is an analysis of Venezuelan Higher Education, from the return of democracy in 1958, to 1980. An attempt is made to explain the role of Venezuelan Higher Education in the training of manpower to assist the process of economic development during this period. The analysis has shown that the process of democratization of Higher Education lacked adequate educational policies and thus failed to train the professionals and technicians required for national economic development. On the contrary, the expansion resulted in a low number of graduates in those areas considered as priorities in the national development plans. Furthermore, the small number of Higher Education graduates has not been well-prepared to meet current industrial demands. The failure of Higher Education to fulfil its role in the training of manpower to assist the country's social and economic development is attributed in this research to the inconsistency between the Higher Education curriculum and current demands and national economic planning. The final part of this thesis attempts to provide an alternative solution to the above mentioned problem.

Jennings, Arthur John. "Practical work in school secondary science and the curriculum influence of its assessment, with particular reference to biological science." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1995. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020245/.

Full text
Abstract:
Practical work in secondary school science has long held a prominent position. With particular reference to biology this thesis, which is essentially a reflective study, examines the way practical science has developed over the last fifty years. Major curriculum revisions are considered in the light of both changing educational insights and societal expectations during this half century which has seen remarkable changes affecting all aspects of life. The primary focus, however, concerns the influence of practical assessment on the teaching of biology. In a chronological sequence the transition of biology is traced from its position as a minority curriculum subject with a predominantly descriptive approach suitable for its morphological and taxonomic emphasis to its place within balanced science for all pupils of compulsory school age. The struggle of biology to emerge as a rigorous school science and the adaptation of biology curricula to accommodate a biosocial synthesis fitting to a society that has become increasingly environmentally aware forms an important strand through the account. Always, though, the effect of examinations and what is examinable has affected teaching priorities and teaching approaches. Therefore this thesis looks at pivotal curriculum and examination changes and seeks to evaluate the match of examinations to curriculum goals. The conclusion is made that practical examinations have frequently served curriculum aims, especially at times of syllabus revision but during periods of relative curriculum and examination stability practical assessment has sometimes exerted a constraining influence. Despite all the changes in science education during the past fifty years practical science has maintained its high profile. Whilst the stated aims of practical work have taken different emphases at different times there is evidence that teachers have persistently lacked clarity about its precise purpose. Despite modem rhetoric about 'doing science' and the national curriculum thrust towards investigations teachers still cling to very general beliefs about the value of practical science even though there is a significant change in disposition towards more investigatory science.

Abstract:
This research was conducted in order to find, according to the ideas of Chartier (1990), representations that were made of students and of literature, by selecting and presenting literary texts in Portuguese language textbooks. We selected books published by the Department of Education of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 1976 to 1996, aimed at students of the former fifth and sixth grades of middle level education. Our intention was also to analyze, from Bakhtin´s perspective, approaches adopted in the selection and presentation of literary texts in textbooks and academic, pedagogical and official documentation, which proposed, during that period, new methods for language and teaching. For the purpose of analysis development, we consulted textbook collections related to our research, which are available at LIVRES (Brazilian Schoolbooks Database) library (1818-2005), at School of Education, Sao Paulo University (FEUSP). Documents comprising the research corpus were organized in two groups, having as reference the official documents available at the time of the textbooks publishing: Guias Curriculares (Curriculum Guides, 1975) and Propostas Curriculares para o ensino de primeiro grau (Curriculum Proposals for Elementary and Middle Level Education, 1986). Our choice to group the collections as such was based on the hypothesis that, as they were guidelines developed according to what was discussed about teaching at the time, they consisted of support documentation to understand the dialogue between texts presented in textbooks and approaches adopted during those two historical moments observed. Having consulted the collection textbooks, we chose two pieces of work for each period, which were considered representative, because they had the most often referenced authors during their literary publication periods. Based on the analysis of the texts of those authors, especially modernist and contemporary authors, we were able to check literature representations, either adequate as text or \'message\' bearing content, or a piece of work dialogically constructed and in context. Regarding representation of the manual recipients, especially students, we noted that sometimes they were projected with a somewhat childish image, and sometimes considered competent to construct meanings and reflect on the texts and dialogues that were presented to them by the textbooks.

Abstract:
The teaching of literature in New South Wales secondary schools has shifted significantly in the period 1990-2001, influenced both by the newer literary theories and by the belated application to the teaching of Shakespeare of active approaches designed to encourage students to think dramatically, think theatrically when approaching playscripts. This essay explores the way in which the author's research papers and the pedagogical materials that they have generated have supported and indeed to some extent been instrumental in bringing about these changes. Beginning with an overview of literature teaching in secondary schools 1990, the essay identifies the questions which have driven the research over the past decade: 1/. Can Reader-Response Theory be made explicit to junior and middle secondary students? Would such knowledge be of value to them? 2/. Are there other aspects of modern literary theory that are worth exploring with secondary students? 3/. Can young readers be encouraged to reflect on their processes of response? Is such an endeavour worthwhile? 4/. How can the teaching of Shakespeare be improved? The last question led the author, during the period of candidature, to explore the puzzling question of why the pedagogy of teaching Shakespeare had lagged so far behind the methods employed in the teaching of other literature, and thus to an historical enquiry covering the teaching of Shakespeare over the past hundred years. At the same time, the author has been concerned to refine some of his teaching methods in order to encourage senior students to explore the plays from, for example, feminist, new historicist and post-colonial perspectives.

Abstract:
Curriculum development involves considerations about curriculum relevance. Thus it is necessary that the curriculum should identify with the needs of the graduate and with professional practice. This requirement shoNAt-hsa t curriculum relevance is not fixed, a view that is consistent with a dynamic, situational approach to curriculum development. The basic categories which define librarianship curriculum development are library activities, theory, innovation, teaching and learning, employers, students. lecturers. These are influential factors in curriculum relevance. Variables in curriculum content such as theory and practice affect curriculum relevance. Librarianship curriculum development should aim at relevance by integrating academic study and practice. Hence, the goal of study towards librarianship education must be focused on the activities performed in library and information services. The need for innovation in library and information services means that novel viewpoints and solutions must be practical. For example, this requirement indicates that curriculum development must take into consideration leamt attributes which are aerieral and transferable in a changing world. This is in view of the employers' requirement that graduates should have critical intellectual ability and the capability to learn rather than their just immediate attributes, skills and knowledge. With teaching and leaming there is abundant rationale for the development of more effective delivery systems than traditional lecturing. If outcome-based learning is valued, individualised, self-directed learning is a prerequisite. The practices of the task-based curriculum, with its focus on student learning and on the development of transferable skills more closely approximate the ideal approaches to librarianship education. The teaching of transferable skills is more likely to define the conditions under which critical reasoning can develop. It has an advantage over the students' abilities to learn to function in the profession outside the university and for continuous development. In this respect task-based education has much wider implications than that of simply providing students with skills. Professional practice does not always fit with the curriculum that is developed by the experts. The expert-developed curriculum also poses a problem for those who interpret it, learn it and receive the products. Thus, a strong joint partnership in which the library and the library school are both recognised in curriculum development is essential if the profession is to fulfil effectively its unique role in society.

Abstract:
Programmes designed for the pre-service education of secondary school geography teachers reflect the assumptions held by programme designers regarding the nature of education, teaching in general and geography teaching in particular. The general practice is that in universities, individual method lecturers design their programmes and in colleges within a department of education the programmes are centrally planned. Each programme focuses on a specific context. This, together with the autonomy enjoyed by university method lecturers in designing their courses, has resulted in the variations found in geography teacher education programmes. The evidence of this is found in the structure and duration of courses, the course content, the strategies used to educate teachers and the way in which the course is evaluated. This thesis is an attempt to establish consensus and divergence in pre-service education programmes for secondary school geography teachers regarding their organisation, specific knowledge imparted to student teachers; skills, values and attitudes developed. The pre-service education of secondary school geography teachers in South Africa is revealed in an analysis of views held by method lecturers, practising teachers in secondary schools, and student teachers and an analysis of course outlines , teaching practice assessment forms and geography method examination papers. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made for improving the initial education of secondary school geography teachers in Transkei

The purpose of this project was to determine the status and value of physical education at primary schools as well as the extent to which it is offered. It is also hoped that this study will be useful in putting forward an argument for the inclusion or re-inclusion of physical education as a compulsory subject in the curriculum of schools. There appears to be a decline in the teaching of the subject at primary schools. Time tables afford little or no time to the teaching of physical education. This has implications for the holistic development of pupils and for providers of physical education teachers. Such institutions would find it difficult to provide opportunities for in-service experiences in physical education for prospective teachers and may come to perceive such courses as not viable.

Abstract:
The current research study investigates the predictive value of two frequently-used benchmark reading assessments: Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). With an increasing emphasis on high-stakes testing to measure reading proficiency, benchmark assessments may assist in predicting end-of-year performance on high-stakes testing. Utah's high-stakes measurement of end-of-year reading achievement is the English Language Arts Criterion-Referenced Test (ELA-CRT). A Utah urban school district provided data for students who completed the DRA, DIBELS, and ELA-CRT in the 2005-2006 school year. The primary purpose of the study was to determine the accuracy to which the Fall administrations of the DRA and the DIBELS predicted performance on the ELA-CRT. Supplementary analysis also included cross-sectional data for the DIBELS. Results indicated that both Fall administrations of the DRA and the DIBELS were statistically significant in predicting performance on the ELA-CRT. Students who were high risk on the benchmark assessments were less likely to score proficiently on the ELA-CRT. Also, demographic factors did not appear to affect individual performance on the ELA-CRT. Important implications include the utility of data collected from benchmark assessments to address immediate interventions for students at risk of failing end-of-year, high-stakes testing.

The Childhood Education - EI since the adoption of the Law of Directives and Bases of Education - LDB became part of the educational system as a first stage of Basic Education. Given the determinations of LDB, the Ministry of Education - MEC prepared a document National Curriculum Reference to Childhood Education - RCNEI to serve as a guide for reflection on educational objectives, content and didactic orientations, supporting the teacher when planning teaching. In order to determine the organization of planning education EI were collected 10 teaching plans for different schools of EI in the region belonging to the Greater Sao Paulo. The analysis of the plans showed a discrepancy between them, starting with the topics that make up the structure of them. Moreover, its content, which serves to guide teachers in conducting the teaching, it is not sufficiently explicit, and inaccurate and inadequate to guide the work to be developed. These questions helped to explain the difficulties of teachers in setting goals, assessing student behavior and prepare activities. Aiming to offer, from the analysis of a behavior-analytic literature focused on education, subsidies for the development of an efficient planning of instruction in the kindergarten were selected and extracted pieces of literature that pointed to compose the essential e structure of the teaching plans. These elements were grouped and aligned to the topics of the structure of teaching plans to do a reading based on literature review The research indicates that for the elaboration of a plan for effective teaching is essential that the objectives are defined clearly and precisely explaining what you want to teach, paying attention to the following: evaluation of early repertoire of students, institutions of contents to be worked out, development of activities related to the goals and systematic evaluation. We conclude that, although it is not easy to change from one moment to another, the behavior of teachers, there are indications in the literature that examined the formulation of good objectives can improve learning outcomes. Therefore, we need to develop other studies these issues in order to provide elements that can be placed more directly in the service of teachers of EI

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the teaching and learning of the English language of intermediate and secondary levels in Saudi public schools for boys and to explore the difficulties and problems which students encounter in learning English. To achieve this, the study identified perceptions of students and teachers about the factors which could cause these learning difficulties. It considered the attitudes, expectations and motivations of students, teachers and parents in relation to the teaching and learning of English. It also determined the strengths and weaknesses of the English language curriculum and presented recommendations for one curriculum's improvement. This research used five data collection methods. They were: questionnaires, classroom observation, interview, materials collections, and samples of English final examination papers in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The study revealed that almost all subjects indicated that they recognised the importance of English in their daily life activities and to students for their future career and study. The study pointed out that almost all participants agreed that the current situation of teaching and learning English did not help students to acquire the language effectively. The majority of teachers and students agreed that there were a number of English learning difficulties. To overcome such problems, the study suggested a number of recommendations which it was believed, might improve English language teaching and learning in Saudi schools. It was hoped that the findings of this study would contribute to diagnosing and improving the English language programmes in the intermediate and secondary schools in Saudi Arabia.
