Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe proliferation of global rankings has led to vigorous debates about the dominance of world-class universities and the encroaching institutional isomorphism in higher education. Specifically, the narrow metrics of rankings celebrate STEM research and institutional reputation at the expense of the humanist roots of higher education: teaching, self-cultivation, and community engagement. This critique on global rankings faces an equally vocal demand that a country must develop world-class universities in order to remain economically competitive in the global era – an instrumental logic that attracts devotees in both advanced economies as well as developing economies. Ironically, policymakers in both contexts simultaneously lament the prevalence of rankings and calibrate strategies to promote success in league tables. Although rankings attract scrutiny in both higher education policymaking and research, the implications of these metrics on higher education in the Global South receive little attention. The discourse is largely focused on top and mid ranking institutions, which are often located in the Global North. In the Global South, global rankings and the concept of world-class universities act through subtle yet powerful mechanisms to shape the contours of higher education. For many institutions and states in the Global South, the fervour is less about creating a world-class university and more about establishing links with well ranked universities (domestically and internationally). Therefore, while the explicit goal is not to build a world-class university, policymakers are nevertheless complicit in reproducing the hegemony of global rankings. This chapter will examine the activities in which global rankings exert tremendous pressure on the Global South: curriculum development, student mobility, faculty recruitment, research partnerships, and strategic planning. In mapping out the mechanisms of reproduction, the goal is to highlight the pervasive influence of global rankings and the complicity in reproduction rather than paint a binary division between the global and local dimensions of higher education.

Abstract:
Interprofessional education (IPE) has emerged as a core educational method among human service and medical educational settings. Research suggests that learners who learn in IPE settings have better transdisciplinary communication skills and are better team members. Unfortunately, competing demands of multiple academic divisions can make facilitating IPE cumbersome. This chapter will describe the processes for developing, implementing, and evaluating an IPE experience drawn from de-identified patient records. The model includes information about incorporating learners from medicine, pharmacy, psychology, social work, and law, but could easily be expanded to include learners from other disciplines. The authors include descriptions of the process of implementing the unfolding case series in both face-to-face and live remote settings. This will include a sample case vignette, a pre-/post-survey, and learning objectives. Finally, the authors include opportunities for expansion and discussion of the challenges of implementing a curriculum targeted toward learners from diverse disciplines.

The architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) domain is moving to a new kind of practice. Professionals are leaving the traditional way of design - engineering projects delivery and moving to a more integrated one. The implications of this initiative have started to appear in the curriculum of construction and architecture schools as well. This chapter presents the design and evaluation of an elective undergraduate course which aims to convey both the theoretical and practical principles of integrated design. This course has been designed for the curriculum of architecture to replace the Computer Aided Design and Drafting course, in which traditional 2-dimensional drafting used to be taught. In this new course, students tried to deliver a design project collaboratively by exchanging data between selected applications. Although some technical problems have occurred, the case studies have proved that integrated design is possible using the latest improvements in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain. The evaluation of the course has also revealed various barriers related to implementing integrated design principles at educational programs.

Abstract:
Technology in education is somehow misconceived by many scholars who think that it replaces conventional knowledge and its transmission. From the onset of this chapter, the author admits that technology has a lot to offer and improve teaching and learning transaction in terms of curriculum design, curriculum implementation, and curriculum evaluation in all stages. It also sets a pace as an aid to learning especially during this era of technological savviness. To answer the question whether technology is a deciding factor on learning outcomes remains a work of further research and more so educational dialogue forums on the subject matter. However, this study has underscored the significance and usability of technology to learning and that without which learning outcomes become rather wanting. It is further argued that teachers who are half baked in the use of technology can bring more harm to education than good. To be precise, technology in education requires a “handle with care” machine. Teachers must be able to use the “machines” and not to be used by them.

Specifically, the authors demonstrate the use of ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) for building the instruction curriculum of the skills of intubation. The majority of the planning time should be spent on the Needs Analysis and Design. The Learning Objectives, prepared during the Design phase, should be written as Objective Observable Behaviors, which can then serve as the assessments for Evaluation. The content includes two examples of the application of ADDIE: firstly a task that requires a large cognitive component and where simulators and mannequins are readily available. Secondly, a task that requires a high level of psychomotor skills where suitably realistic mannequins are not available, and virtual reality needs to be used as an additional educational modality.

The presence of special needs students in regular classrooms makes it difficult for teachers to manage the situation, especially since in Romania the initial teacher-training curriculum doesn't include a class addressing the issue. This chapter talks about the teaching, learning, and evaluation experiences offered by an instructional unit on the subject of ADHD for over 700 primary and secondary school teachers from all areas of expertise. The purpose of this unit was to increase the teachers' knowledge and understanding of students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in an educational frame. This chapter presents content elements, learning, and assessment activities that the participants proposed and implemented during the work sessions: both face to face and online. This chapter tackles the critical changes that have occurred in English language education in different countries under the progress of globalization. Adhering to comprehensiveness, the changes in representative countries across different categories are discussed. The division of the categories is based upon Kachru's Three Circle Model, namely the Inner Circle, the Outer Circle, and the Expanding Circle. Within each circle, two representative countries are addressed. Major changes related to the field of English language education in these countries include issues such as educational policy, English curriculum designing, English teaching research, methods and techniques, English educators' and learners' perspectives, and so forth. Throughout the synthesizing and comparing process, the common theme that is used to connect the six countries is globalization; discussions are centered on how the changes are influenced by globalization. The chapter concludes by addressing the future issues each country might face and their further directions in advancing English education.

VR Simulators are a powerful alternative to traditional educational techniques in many domains; and in particular, in surgery. Although they offer new possibilities for learning, training and assessment, they still found difficult to be accepted and integrated into hospitals. In this paper, we explain what we consider the key issues to create successful VR simulators, and we present two methodologies: the guidelines for the simulator design and the evaluation of their validity. Research on VR surgical simulators should be interdisciplinary. It involves medicine, educational psychology, compute

In a teaching-learning process, it is essential that the evaluation is summative and formative, from an analytical and holistic basis so that the process is comprehensive and integrates the work that the student has developed throughout the course, for example, a portfolio of evidence. Van der Schaaf and Stokking (2008) state that a portfolio of evidence integrates elements that must be related to each other, in order to be considered valid and reliable to evaluate the teaching-learning process, the elements are: a) the teacher model, b) the task model, c) the scoring model and d) the interpre

Problem-based learning (PBL) has long been recognized as an effective way to engage students in active learning. Problems are those students will finally encounter in their professional lives. Incorporating PBL into undergraduate education can motivate students to acquire knowledge and skills by tackling problems and not just to pass exams. In engineering, a common form of PBL is through course projects. Students work in teams to explore real-world problems and make presentations to share what they have learned.
