Abstract:
Abstract: This study analyzes the story and textual sources of Cat People (1942), classic film directed by Jacques Tourneur, from the idea of transformation of a legend. This legend was originally outlined by Val Lewton in 1930, and it gives fundamental importance to the theme of metamorphosis, as it was a Greco-Roman mythological tale: thus, the conversion of a woman in a panther with the male sexual contact fuses a supposed Slavic medieval curse with the furious reaction of classical deities when they were discovered in their nakedness. The analysis of the variation of a legendary story into a different one has a palpable teaching utility in order to understand the emergence of new tales, especially when their support is cinema.

Abstract:
Purpose The resource curse literature suggests that firms operating in non-oil and non-gas industries in petrostates face considerable challenges in securing competitiveness and sustaining themselves. Based on a firm-level survey within a micro-petrostate, Brunei, the purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between specific HR policies and practices and organisational performance; analyse, compare, and contrast oil and gas with non-oil and non-gas sectors; and draw out the comparative lessons for understanding the potential and performance consequences of HR interventions in resource-centred national economies. Design/methodology/approach Data for this study were generated from a primary survey administered amongst the HR directors in companies operating in all sectors in Brunei. A statistically representative sample size of 214 was selected. Findings The authors confirmed that firms in the oil and gas sector indeed performed better than other sectors. However, the authors found that the negative effects associated with operating outside of oil and gas could be mitigated through strategic choices: the strategic involvement of HR directors in the affairs of the company reduced employee turnover and added positively to financial returns across sectors. Practical implications Developing and enhancing the role of people management is still very much easier than bringing about structural institutional reforms: the study confirms that at least part of the solution to contextual difficulties lies within, and that the firm-level consequences of the resource curse can be ameliorated through a strategic choice. Originality/value The nature of the present investigation is one of few studies conducted in South East Asia in general and in the context of Brunei, in particular. It also contributes to the authors’ understanding whether HR interventions can ameliorate the challenges of operating in a non-resource sector in a resource-rich country.

Abstract:
This article examines both theoretical and empirical discussion on strategies to overcome state-corporatism and developmentalism practices in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. State-corporatism is the term used to describe a political condition when a state has a strong linkage to organized groups. Developmentalism is an over-arching concept to describe a strong tendency of a state to maximize economics growths through investment, while disregarding people’s fundamental rights. East Kalimantan Province is selected because it is highly known as one of the enournous amount of natural resources found within among other provinces in Indonesia. However, the richness of this province has become a curse of its people due to massive destructions of natural resources. This paper seeks to analyse in what way human rights’ principles and indigenous spirituality can lessen the negative effects of ‘development’ projects sustained by state-corporatism. This article contemplates what strategies that can be executed to diminish state-corporatism effects in East Kalimantan, particularly in two important districts: Regency of Kutai Kartanegara and Bontang Municipality. This article argues that the indigenous spirituality is a key to battle state-corporatism’s influences. Indigenous spirituality as forum internum is still a potential tool of advocacy. By capitalizing the role of shamans, indigenous peoples might still have opportunities to reclaim and defend their cultural rights.

Abstract:
According to the “Curse of Ham” narrative in the book of Genesis (Gen 9:20– 27), Ham gazed at his sleeping father Noah’s nakedness and did not cover him. When Noah awoke he cursed Canaan, Ham’s fourth and youngest son, and his offspring with slavery. Why did Noah curse Canaan and not Ham, the one who stared at his nakedness? And why did Noah curse Ham for the seemingly trivial act of not covering him? This article links Ham’s doing to Noah and Noah’s cursing of Canaan to a motive for land, the land of Canaan for Israel, Yahweh’s landless people. The curse of Canaan justified casting the Canaanites out of the land. It argues that Ham’s deed and Noah’s curse were invented by the Yahwist (J) author of the narrative to realise this motive of land for Israel.

Abstract:
A statistician takes an action on behalf of an agent, based on the agent’s self-reported personal data and a sample involving other people. The action that he takes is an estimated function of the agent’s report. The estimation procedure involves model selection. We ask the following question: Is truth-telling optimal for the agent given the statistician’s procedure? We analyze this question in the context of a simple example that highlights the role of model selection. We suggest that our simple exercise may have implications for the broader issue of human interaction with machine learning algorithms. (JEL C52)

Analysing competing visions of Uganda’s future with oil, this article off ers a new perspective on the resource curse as a risk discourse. Political and civil society actors in Uganda create and negotiate visions of the future that are framed by the resource curse thesis: oil could be a blessing or a curse. Connecting this discourse to prevalent notions of uncertainty in Uganda’s oil region, I argue that for the people, knowledge of the resource curse increases their uncertainty about the future.

Abstract:
The intention of this thesis is to identify and analyze the cat woman archetype as a contemporary extension of the transgressive witch archetype, which rampantly appears over the course of cinema history, working as a signifier of a patriarchal society's fear of autonomous and subversive women. The character of Catwoman is the ultimate representation for this archetype on grounds of her visibility, longevity, and ability to return again and again. More importantly, Catwoman and her sisterhood of cat women work against male creators as a means of female empowerment through trickery. Within this thesis, key films of varying genres are drawn from throughout cinema history and analyzed in order to demonstrate the intertextual network of characters that make up the cat woman archetype, and the importance of the Catwoman character in her many forms.

Abstract:
Jacques Toumeur's 1942 film Cat People reflects patriarchal America's anxieties regarding the workplace inversion of gender roles during World War II. However, since the film was released in the middle of the war, it could not quite discourage women from assuming jobs; after all, working women were vital to maintaining the economy. In this paper, I uncover the complicated and previously overlooked relationships between gendered wartime discourse and Cat People, revealing how the film puts forth an ideological imperative in an attempt to "discipline" the women of its historical moment. Using the works of René Girard, Lucia Folena, Teresa de Lauretis, and Michel Foucault, I argue that Cat People - besides working to ensure the cultural resonance of male dominance during a time when it was seemingly under attack - rehearses an important process by which patriarchal society often explains cultural collapse: the scapegoating of female sexuality.

Moyo, Chiropafadzo. "A Karanga perspective on fertility and barrenness as blessing and curse in 1 Samuel 1:1-2:10." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/8554.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation seeks to develop further the theological interpretation of the books of Samuel, by examining I Samuel I: 1-2:10 in the context of fertility and barrenness as blessing and curse. This reading was related to the Karanga understanding of fertility and barrenness. The contribution shows how the Biblical narrative can become a resource for ethical reflection in African communities such as the Karanga women. The hypotheses that guided this study, were that: a-Fertility and barrenness in the Old Testament should be understood in close conjunction with blessing and cursing as theological concepts in ancient Israel. b-Fertility and barrenness could also be examined in a relevant and contextual manner by relating it to the culture and understanding of the Karanga people. In order to achieve this, two major tasks were attempted. One: An exegesis of I Samuel I: 12: 10 in which Vernon Robbins' method of Socio- Rhetorical criticism was used. The method helped to identify that the text is a narrative, and that the author might have been the Deuteronomistic historian, who wrote in the period of the decline of the Judean monarchy and when the Jews were in exile. The narrative is used to tell about the despair of the Jews, and to inform the Jews that there was hope for restoration if they obeyed God. This ideology is woven in the story of a barren woman Hannah who suffered the despair of barrenness and was later blessed with a child because of her prayer and obedience to God. In the narrative God is described as one who cares for the marginalised, and one who changes the lives of his people, from curse to blessing. The method also helped to realise tbe culture and context of Hannah, and made it possible to relate this culture and context to other cultures that are similar. Secondly an empirical survey was conducted amongst one hundred Karanga women. The findings were that Karanga consider fertility as blessing and barrenness as curse. The curse is experienced in the suffering of the barren women. Barrenness is used to inflict pain, to marginalise women, and has become a major cause of divorce and death through the spread of HIV and Aids. A reading of the story of Hannah helped the Karanga women to identify their barren problems with Hannah, and to find a new way of understanding their own problem in terms of hope. This study was able to prove its hypothesis both through the exegesis and the discussions of the research findings. It was found that the narrative form of the text appealed effectively to the understanding of Karanga women. This was possible because narrative is one of the methods of communication that is used effectively by the Karanga in their language. Through using Hannah as a paradigm of curse and blessing in relation to barrenness and fertility, Karanga women were challenged to view their barren situations in a different way that is open to accept change from curse to blessing. The study has also contributed to see how an old text of the time of Hannah could in the present day contextually influence Karanga women's barren experiences through holding the same culture and also by having similar experiences barren of women.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie dissertasie poog om die teologiese interpretasie van die boeke van Samuel verder te ontwikkel by wyse van 'n ondersoek van I Samuel 1:1-2:10 in die konteks van vrugbaarheid en onvrugbaarheid as 'n seën en as 'n vervloeking.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the institutional choices available to Timor-Leste to manage their natural resource wealth wisely and avoid the resource curse. Timor-Leste is a poor country and its challenge is to use its large per capita resource wealth to alleviate poverty and enable sustainable development. This research examines the Petroleum Fund Law, and other mechanisms to manage petroleum revenue that the Government of Timor-Leste has established. These mechanisms appear to be resilient, but remain untested. Based on field interviews in Timor-Leste, the study offers insights into the opinions of East Timorese and foreign advisers about how Timor-Leste´s petroleum revenue should be managed, and how a poor country can raise the living standards of its people.¶A framework that identifies human and social capital as essential to the quality of institutions is developed in this research, which proposes that the pre-condition of institutions affects the management of natural resource revenue. As a result of history (not its natural resource wealth) Timor-Leste´s productive institutions are weak and destructive institutions, such as corruption, are strong. The preferences of the research participants, identified using semi-structured interviews and multi-criteria decision analysis, revealed that what petroleum revenue is spent on is the most important petroleum revenue management decision. Further, health and education were regarded the highest spending priorities. Petroleum revenue management decisions that may affect Timor-Leste´s economic, social and political independence were also important to participants.¶Timor-Leste´s sustainable development depends on continued assistance in the form of foreign advisers to address its lack of human capital. A commitment to transparency should counteract the lack of trust between government and civil society. Timor-Leste will also need to invest more in people, and recognise that the wise management of its petroleum revenue depends as much on good governance as the mechanisms designed to manage it. The people of Timor-Leste´s fierce determination to overcome the challenges they face, against all odds, may help Timor-Leste to avoid the resource curse.¶

Abstract:
This view focuses on the invisibility of the terrifying object. Yet the sense of the invisible, due to the director's interest in the supernatural, persists also in the frame, intensifing the potential of the other visible. The other visible in Tourneur's works come from the abstinence of the visual and the auditory, especially notable in moments of terror in the genre of fantastique but also more generally when the cinematographic fantasticality becomes perceptible. A detailed analysis of the extracts strives to catch the second song of the real, a unique miracle of the cinema, from which the spectral time of an athor visibility emerges. This study examines Tourneur's works from 1942 to 1948, especially the fantastique trilogy produced by Lewton. It takes into consideration the filming environment of B movies and the cinema's own effect. This journey leads to the possibility of a realism based on the fantastique

Agbo, Seth A. "Viewpoints of native people on education: problems and priorities of schooling in Cat Lake, Ontario." Thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/6232.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary literature on Native education attributes the failure of education for Native children to the negligence of educational policy analysts to obtain grassroots understanding of Indian education from Native perspectives, and that providing successful education programs for Native students should entail an understanding of the purpose and priorities of education from the viewpoints of Native people. The premises for this study were that, first, the failure of education for Indian children was, partly, due to the failure of researchers to analyze education concepts within a framework which fully interprets Native people's perspectives about schooling. Second, that Native people are capable of acting to improve their school system. This study had a dual purpose. First, it was to examine how the present system of education provided for Native children in the Indian reserve of Cat Lake, Ontario, might have been inadequate in terms of the expectations of the Indians living in the reserve. Second, the study was to serve as a basis of helping community people to mobilize themselves for action on educational issues. The study documented what Native people perceived were the shortcomings as well as priorities for their school system, and proposed strategies for the improvement of schooling. The objective of the study was to collaborate with the people of Cat Lake to identify problems, and priorities for their school system and find strategies by which to act on both the problems and priorities for the improvement of the school system. The research strategy for this study drew on participatory research, an alternative research approach to social science and educational research. The methods of investigation included document analysis, workshops, public meetings, recorded observations in the form of field notes, and semi-structured interviews involving the use of open-ended questionnaires with fifty-eight respondents. The various sources of data and procedures employed in their analysis promoted both the verification and cross validation of the results. The researcher's position as principal of the school in Cat Lake provided deep insight into understanding, interpreting and analyzing the data for the study. The results of the study indicated that although community people perceive schooling as an institution alien to the traditions and values of Indian people, they deem it important for their children to obtain quality education and attain standards comparable to children in the mainstream Canadian society. This study showed that community people lacked understanding of the meaning of local control and the processes involved in school governance. The study also indicated that among the factors that hinder an effective provision of quality education for Native children are, the poor general social and economic environment of the Indian reserve, and attitudes of community people towards schooling. Finally, the study highlighted community people's priorities for schooling in the reserve, and strategies they suggested for their implementation. This study concluded that: (1) a two-way or bi-cultural approach to education, that is, children maintaining the Indian way of life, while at the same time being competent in literacy and numeracy skills, is a way of making education relevant to the Native child; (2) in order to enhance the quality of school programs for Native students, Indian schools should minimize their reliance on mainstream Canadian school curricular products and develop a new school concept which emphasizes the traditions and culture of Native people; (3) priorities for the education of Indian children should include a re-conceptualization of local control, the articulation of a new meaning and purpose of education, the development of a suitable curriculum, and the provision of adequate support and maintenance facilities for the school system; and (4) for local control of education to be beneficial to Native students, politicians and education policy analysts should clearly redefine objectives concerning local control and the devolution of power should necessitate the empowerment of local people to maintain control under conditions of increasing and multiplying awareness of a philosophy of education that is capable of improving the social and economic lives of Native children. I have discussed the implications for policy, practice and further studies, as well as recommendations arising from the research and concluded with a summary of the study.

Abstract:
Abstract Why do so many communities surround menstruation with taboos? And, are all menstrual taboos created equal? Gottlieb opens this chapter with an anthropological approach to the nature of “taboo” itself. From there, the chapter explores the wide variety of ways that the Hebrew Bible in particular, as well as several other religious traditions, have shaped menstrual taboos (including, but going well beyond, the notion of a “curse”). Such taboos have operated in diverse ways and diverse places, hence this chapter also explores how both individual and whole communities may experience them differently, including offering less negative interpretations. As such, the chapter introduces readers to a striking diversity of menstrual experiences. Moreover, people and communities in both the Global North and the Global South increasingly challenge taboos with creative activism. The chapter concludes with a brief survey of what has become a menstrual movement.

Abstract:
The concept of self is a critical part of personality and consumer behavior. The concept of self allows individuals to be introspective, to evaluate their goals and abilities, to plan for the future, to exert their control, or to feel complete. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, without selves, people cannot be self-centered, self-serving, self-promoting, or self-critical. In the lack of self-image, an individual cannot feel self-conscious, ashamed, guilty, or embarrassed. The self contributes to human experiences in the best and the worst moments; it can describe as a gift and a curse.

Abstract:
Recently, we have often the opportunity to shop for something on the computer display connected to the Internet. However, it is often said that the product arrived at the home is something different from it presented on the computer display. We have studied into the differences between the shape evaluation in virtual space and in real space. And it is indicated that the shape evaluation in virtual space is slightly difference from it in real space, especially, in case of evaluation of product which has the complex contour [1]. In this research, we are focusing on the complexity of contour. The complexity is defined by mathematical methods, for example, Hurst exponent in fractal geometry. In this paper, we have proposed the algorithm which makes the curve lines based on the Hurst exponent. And using these curve lines made by proposed method, we have confirmed that the mathematical complexity is equal to the complexity which people feel by sensory evaluation. The result shows that Hurst exponent almost can show the complexity which people feel, however, it is difficult in case of the cyclic curves.

Abstract:
Most tissues in the body are supported by the lymphatic system for a variety of functions, including the regulation of fluid balance, the removal of particulate matter from the interstitium, as well as the transport of fat from the intestine to the blood, among others. Lymphedema, a chronic disease characterized by an inability of the lymphatics to maintain tissue homeostasis and estimated to affect over 130 million people worldwide, can result in serious clinical problems for which there are very few beneficial cures or therapies [1]. However, despite the importance of lymphatics and the prevalence of lymphatic disease, very little is known about the particular mechanisms through which the lymphatics fulfill its primary functions.

Abstract:
Breast cancer is the second most deadly disease worldwide. This severe condition led 627,000 people to die in 2018. Thus, early detection is critical for improving the patients' lifetime or even cure them. In this context, we can appeal to Medicine 4.0 that exploits the machine learning capabilities to obtain a faster and more efficient diagnosis. Therefore, this work aims to apply a simpler convolutional neural network, called VGG-7, for classifying breast cancer in histopathological images. Results have shown that VGG-7 overcomes the performance of VGG-16 and VGG-19, showing an accuracy of 98%, a precision of 99%, a recall of 98%, and an F1 score of 98%.

Despite these important functions, very little is known about the particular mechanisms through which the lymphatics fulfill these roles. Lymphedema, a chronic disease characterized by an inability of the lymphatics to maintain tissue homeostasis and estimated to affect over 130 million people worldwide, can result in serious clinical problems for which there are very few beneficial cures or therapies [1]. While fluid stagnation is the primary clinical manifestation of the disease, severe lymphedema is often correlated with tissue remodeling and the gross accumulation of lipid [1]. Given these symptoms, one must consider the breakdown in the lymphatic response to mechanical load (i.e. fluid balance) in order to understand the progression of the disease.

In ASME 2018 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2018-84374.

Abstract:
The damage states in a storage tank subjected to seismic loading can induce loss of containment (LOC) with possible consequences (fire, explosion, etc..) both for the surrounding units and people. This aspect is particularly crucial for the Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) of industrial plants subjected to earthquakes. Classical QRA methodologies are based on standard LOC conditions whose frequency of occurrence is mainly related to technological accident rather than natural events and are thus useless. Therefore, it is evident the necessity of establishing new procedures for the evaluation of the frequencies of occurrence of LOC events in storage tanks when subjected to an earthquake. Consequently, in this work a simple procedure founded on a probabilistic linear regression-based model is proposed, which uses simplified numerical models typically adopted for the seismic response of above ground storage tanks. Based on a set of predetermined LOC events (e.g. damage in the pipes, damage in the nozzles, etc..), whose probabilistic relationship with the local response (stress level, etc..) derives from experimental tests, the probabilistic relationship of selected response parameters with the seismic intensity measure (IM) is established. As result, for each LOC event, the cloud analysis method is used to derive the related fragility curve.
