Abstract:
Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex gastrointestinal condition marked by immune system dysfunction and intestinal barrier damage. The pathogenesis involves a mix of genetic, environmental, and immunological factors, with the potential for itaconic acid derivatives like 4-Octyl itaconate (4-OI) to modulate immune responses and offer therapeutic benefits. Methods The study utilized a mouse model of acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to evaluate the effects of 4-OI. C57BL/6J mice were divided into control and treatment groups, with interventions in

Abstract Background The role of the oral microbiota in the development of IBD and its association with disease severity has been established. However, the specific impact and mechanism of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g), a major pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity, in exacerbating colitis remain unclear. Our objective is to investigate how P.g exacerbates ulcerative colitis. Methods Fecal samples were collected from patients with active ulcerative colitis and compared to those from healthy controls to assess the abundance of P.g. The impact of P.g on colitis and the colonic mucosal barrier w

Abstract:
Introduction Exploring the ways in which children merge education, play and connection in their digital device use, this article critiques the established definitions of the Internet of Things and the Internet of Toys and suggests an alternative. Using evidence emerging from The Internet of Toys: Benefits and Risks of Connected Toys for Children, we deconstruct these traditional terms, and advocate for a revised terminology. Such a reconsideration helps frame children’s use of digital devices and the important roles these play in children’s everyday lives. The Internet of Things is defined by

New, low-cost transparent vacuum insulation panels (TVIPs) using structured cores for the windows of existing buildings are proposed. The TVIP is produced by inserting the structured core, the low-emissivity film, and the adsorbent into the transparent gas barrier envelopes. In this chapter, the authors introduce the outlines, the design and thermal analysis method, the performance evaluation (test) method. Firstly, five spacers, namely peek, modified peek, mesh, silica aerogel, and frame, are selected as the structured core. The effective thermal conductivity of TVIPs with five different spac

Abstract:
Multiple quantum wells (MQWs) exhibit large optical nonlinearities associated with saturation of excitonic transitions at the band edge. Here we present a study of nonlinear absorption and refraction in an InGaAs/InP MQW structure, for the design of an all-optical reflection modulator. The sample, grown by SBE, consists of sixty periods of 77 Å InGaAs wells and 70 Å InP barriers, sandwiched between two 0.5-μm InP buffers. The wells are affected by a tensile strain due to a 0.5% lattice mismatch. In the experiment, a cw Nd:YAG pump and a white light probe (tungsten lamp) are incident collinearl
