This paper investigates the stability behavior of a mechanically coupled bi-stable mechanism made of two parallel and initially curved microbeams with focus on the influence of the coupled beams’ initial curvatures on the system. First, the nonlinear and coupled force–displacement equation is derived. Then, a parametric study of the coupled beams system is studied with the system categorized into different structural compartment types according to the initial curvature of the coupled beams. It is concluded that the snap-through of such a coupled bi-stable system is governed by the beams’ initi

A steel-fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite bar (SFCB) is a kind of rebar with inner steel bar wrapped by FRP, which can achieve a better anticorrosion performance than that of ordinary steel bar. The high ultimate strength of FRP can also provide a significant increase in load bearing capacity. Based on the adequate simulation of the load-displacement behaviors of concrete beams reinforced by SFCBs, a parametric analysis of the moment-curvature behaviors of concrete beams that are singly reinforced by SFCB was conducted. The longitudinal stresses in beams subjected to bending also set up transverse stresses within them; they compress the cross section when the beam's curvature is being increased and stretch it when its curvature is being reduced. Analysis shows that transverse stresses rise to a maximum at the neutral axis and increase with both the bending moment applied and the curvature of the beam. These stresses can qualitatively explain the fracture behaviour of tree branches. Curved ‘hazard beams’ that are being straightened split down the middle because of the low transverse tensile strength of wood. B

The experiments focus on the inelastic behavior of the bilayer beams due to thermal holding and thermal cycling. Abstract An analysis of the vibration of sandwich beams with small iinitial curvature and a delamination between the core and face sheet is presented. The combined effects of initial curvature, transverse shear deformation and extent of delamination are evaluated and discussed. It is shown that the sensitivity to delamination damage is greater for straight beams than for initially curved beams. It is also greater for high modulus cores (less shear deformation). Also the influence of shear deformation on the fundamental frequency becomes smaller as the curvature increases.
