Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Finite Element Method (FEM) as applied to Computational Electromagnetics (CEM), can be used to solve a large class of Electromagnetics problems with high accuracy, and good computational efficiency. Computational efficiency can be improved by using element basis functions of higher order. If, however, the chosen element type is not able to accurately discretise the computational domain, the converse might be true. Abstract:
A general finite element method is presented to solve the Euler equations in a Lagrangian reference frame. This FEM framework allows for separate arbitrarily high order representation of kinematic and thermodynamic variables. An accompanying hydrodynamics code written in Matlab is presented as a test-bed to experiment with various basis function choices. A wide range of basis function pairs are postulated and a few choices are developed further, including the bi-quadratic Q2-Q1d and Q2-Q2d elements. These are compared with a corresponding pair of low order bi-linear elements, traditional Q1-Q0

<p> An adaptive arbitrary-order curvilinear progressive 2D crack growth algorithm is presented. The method uses the ZFEM hypercomplex finite element program to compute arbitrary order derivatives of strain energy with respect to self-similar or perpendicular crack extensions, and then constructs a family of Taylor series functions of strain energy versus crack growth direction. An adaptive algorithm automatically selects the best high-degree polynomial to extrapolate a curvilinear crack path, and adjusts the length of the crack growth increment added during each simulation step to maintain the

Tow-placement machines have made it possible to manufacture curved-fiber composite tow paths. A composite structure with curved-fiber tow paths can be formed in a manner similar to filament winding. The result is a laminate with spatially varying stiffness and response. This manufacturing method can also result in overlap regions between adjacent tow paths. In previous research, a closed-form solution was developed to determine the response of these variable-stiffness laminates, but the overlap regions were not included in this model. The aviation industry is growing at a steady rate but presently, the industry is highly dependent on fossil fuel. As the world is running out of fossil fuels and the wide-spread acceptance of climate change due to carbon emissions, both the governments and industry are spending a significant amount of resources on research to reduce the weight and hence the fuel consumption of commercial aircraft. A commercial fixed-wing aircraft wing consists of spars which are beams running in span-wise direction, carrying the flight loads and ribs which are panels with holes attached to the spars to preserv

Global-local finite element analyses were used to study the damage tolerance of curvilinearly stiffened panels; fabricated using the modern additive manufacturing process, the so-called unitized structures, and that of adhesive joints. With the damage tolerance study of unitized structures as the focus, responses of curvilinearly stiffened panels to the combined shear and compression loadings were studied for different stiffenersâ height. Composite materials have immense capabilities in terms of tailorability and studying in-depth the Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) technique can go a long way in achieving the above goal. Composite laminates fabricated by AFP can also induce defects such as gaps and overlaps. These defects mainly arise in laminates with curvilinear fiber paths. Gaps usually get filled with resin post-curing while the overlaps are thickness build-ups. This makes it important to analyse the effect of these defects and to incorporate these effects while designing and modeling composite laminates. The present work

The advantage of curvilinear elements lies in the fact that they can model curved boundaries with more accuracy and lesser number of degrees of freedom than rectilinear elements. The method is formulated in terms of linear edge elements for transverse components of the electric or magnetic field and quadratic nodal elements for the axial component for structures having diagonal permittivity and permeability
