Abstract:
Ulster has not yet been invaded systematically, but from the information we have received, many important centres are taking to the fields in the most enthusiastic manner'. Thus wrote Gaelic Athletic Association (G.A.A.) founder Michael Cusack in 1885. It was fashionable then to refer to a national sports party ‘invading’ another land to exhibit a sport to the host country, but Cusack was probably parodying unionist depictions of recent nationalist political campaigns in the north-east as ’invasions’ – a term that itself mocked nationalism and its southern promoters as foreign entities in the north.

Abstract:
This letter responds to the article by Cusack et al., ‘Extreme weather-related health needs of people who are homeless’ (Australian Journal of Primary Health, 2013, 19(3), 250–255), which addressed the impacts of extreme weather on the health of the homeless population in inner city Adelaide. We compare the findings of Cusack et al. to our own original research, based on interviews with service providers to the homeless in urban and rural Victoria. We further place this issue in the broader context of climate change, which is crucial given the expected increase in extreme weather events and associated health impacts.

Abstract:
When Michael Cusack founded the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884, the political debate in Ireland was dominated by Home Rule. The creation of the GAA may have found inspiration in the growing nationalist movement led by Charles Stewart Parnell, but the Irish Parliamentary Party may also have been bolstered by the sporting organisation’s ideal of reviving the national identity through the preservation of its traditional games. The GAA undoubtedly conferred legitimacy on the political movement which peaked in December 1885 with a wide electoral success and then with the introduction of the first Home Rule Bill. But Home Rule did not exactly mean the same in sport as in politics. Even though Michael Cusack was not hostile to power sharing with the unionist leaders of existing athletic associations, the failure of his first attempts to democratise Irish sport led him to defend a more radical position implying total separation from his counterparts under British supervision. The Home Rule movement certainly benefited from the GAA’s nationalist and cultural stance to develop Irish consciousness. But the likelihood of self-government was compromised by the own image of the GAA’s administration whose sectarianism and internal disputes over its political nature could hardly convince unionists of their interest to agree with the principle of Home Rule.

Abstract:
IntroductionLittle is known about trauma or treatment of trauma with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), in adults with ASD. Neither is it clear on how ASD influences the expression of posttraumatic stress.Objectives(1) To increase knowledge about treatment of trauma, and trauma related symptoms in adults with ASD. (2) To provide directionsfor research into the effects of EMDR on the expression of autistic and trauma related symptoms in adults with ASD.MethodsReview of the literature using Cochrane Collaboration Centre, Embase, Medline, PsychINFO, PubMed and Web of Science.ResultsClinicians often overlook trauma related symptoms in people with a severe mental illness like ASD, due to diagnostic overshadowing (Grubaugh, Cusack and Zinzow, 2008), caused by the overlap between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and ASD. In the case of diagnostic overshadowing, symptoms like avoidance, hyperarousal and reduced ability to mentalize (Plana, Lavoie, Battaglia and Achim, 2014) are attributed to ASD, while in actual fact they are manifestations of stress reactions related to perceived traumatic events. However, when symptoms are correctly attributed to negative experiences, clinicians tend to withhold treatment because of fear of aggravating symptoms (Frueh, Cusack, Grubaugh, Sauvageot and Wells, 2006). The literature suggests that trauma in adults with ASD is undertreated.ConclusionTo our knowledge, the effects of EMDR in adults with ASD have not yet been studied, except at case level. A study protocol will be presented to assess the efficacy of EMDR treatment for trauma related symptoms in adults with ASD.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
Political scientists commonly draw on history but often do not read actual historians carefully. This limited engagement with historians, and with contextual information more generally, contributes to a loss of historical knowledge that can undermine the validity of quantitative analysis. This article makes this argument by means of an examination of the qualitative evidence underlying the important quantitative arguments about the origins of electoral systems advanced by Carles Boix and by Thomas Cusack, Torben Iversen, and David Soskice. The article explores how their respective attention to historical knowledge affects the quality of their data, the plausibility of their hypotheses, and, ultimately, the robustness of their statistical findings. It also analyzes how such knowledge sheds new light on the causal direction between institutions and their economic effects.

Abstract:
Writing some years after the events he was describing, Michael Cusack, the first secretary of the Gaelic Athletic Association, suggested that in its early years the ‘Association swept the country like a prairie fire’. This is perhaps a little exaggerated, but its success was striking. Eighteen months after its foundation the G.A.A. was reckoned to have 50,000 individual members. Six months later there were around 400 affiliated clubs. The relative success of the G.A.A. is particularly apparent when its progress is compared with that of two of its rival organisations. The Irish Football Association was founded in 1880. Ten years later only 124 clubs had affiliated to it. By the same date the G.A.A., founded in 1884, had 875 member clubs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ameloblastoma is a rare, benign tumor of odontogenic epithelium that was recognized in 1827 by Cusack and renamed ameloblastoma in 1930 by Ivey and Churchill. Ameloblastomas can be found both in the maxilla and mandible with a greater predilection of about 80% in the mandible with the posterior ramus area being the most frequent site. While chemotherapy, radiation therapy, curettage and liquid nitrogen have been effective in some cases of ameloblastoma, surgical resection remains the most definitive treatment for this condition. Rehabilitation of residual mandibular defect post resection is a challenge due to long span compromised ridge condition and the absence of dentition. In such scenario, a fixed-removable prosthesis allows rapid return to excellent function by providing favorable biomechanical stress distribution along with restoration of esthetics, phonetics and ease of postoperative care and maintenance. This paper presents successful Prosthodontic rehabilitation of a patient with a large residual mandibular defect secondary to surgical resection for ameloblastoma using fixed-removable hybrid prosthesis.
